You'll always be my first

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 07:45 PM PDT

You've said good night to the Moon and the Gorilla, successfully counted One or Two Red or Blue Fish, and finally tucked Junie B. Jones back on the shelf. Congrats! Now, it's time for your Bedtime Story -- one can't-miss article to soothe your frazzled parent brain at the end of the day. Happy reading, and we'll see you tomorrow.

You'll Always Be My First

By Amy Wruble

genevieve elaine photography

Dear Daughter,

"You're my favorite person in the whole world" is not something you're going to hear me say anymore. Not only is it unfair to Daddy, but it really won't go over well with your baby sister, once she's born and learns to talk. For now, though, it's hard not to keep thinking it.

You, you, you. You're the one who burst my heart wide open. You taught me what wild, uncontrollable, unlimited, unconditional love feels like. You changed everything. You turned me into a mom.

And even though you will no longer be my only child, or even my only girl, you will always be my first.

Too pretty to be a nun?

Too Pretty To Be A Nun?

When I tell people I'm going to be a nun, they are shocked. Their eyebrows shoot up, their jaws drop, their beers spill onto the bar.

"You're too normal to be a nun," they say.

"You're too smart."

"You're too pretty!"

This last one took me by the greatest surprise -- as if acne or a big nose is a prerequisite to being a nun.

Angela Svec, a college student currently discerning religious life, shared her story with HuffPost Religion:

What Happened to America's First Muslims?

Muslims' presence in America is affirmed in documents dated more than a century before religious liberty became the law of the land, as in a Virginia statute of 1682 which referred to "negroes, moores, molatoes, and others, born of and in heathenish, idollatrous, pagan, and Mahometan parentage and country" who "heretofore and hereafter may be purchased, procured, or otherwise obteigned, as slaves." Historian Peter Manseau has the story. Read more.

Thank You: A Prayer in Crisis

Rev. Jeff Hood writes:

The natural birth of Lucas was amazing. Madeleine was a little slower to make her appearance. Emily was experiencing contraction after contraction and nothing was happening. After close to four hours, I noticed something dripping on the floor. I don't know why, but I assumed that it was water for a moment. When I realized that it was blood, I told Lauren (the doula) and ran out into the hall to yell for the nurse. Emily was in trouble and so was Madeleine. As medical professionals rushed into the room, my anxiety grew exponentially with each passing second.

Fasting for an End to Starvation Wages

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that we have to remind this nation that it's a crime to live in a rich nation and receive starvation wages. By risking their jobs and going on strike for $15, better working conditions and union rights, tens of thousands of brave fast-food workers have offered just such a reminder. They've put a face on poverty and forced the public to grapple with an unsustainable economic reality in which corporations and CEOs rake in billions of dollars, but the employees on who's backs these fortunes are made are left with scraps.
Rudy Lopez, executive director of Interfaith Worker Justice, and Sr. Simone Campbell, executive director of NETWORK, have the full story:

Should the Swastika Be Rehabilitated or Forever Damned? A Surprising Debate

Bernard Starr writes: When I was growing up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York I had a friend named Billy Tracy. I admired his name since I was a fan of the popular comic book police detective, Dick Tracy. I treasured my Dick Tracy crystal radio kit. Then I learned that Billy's family name was not originally Tracy. It was changed from Trotsky. Although the family had no connection to the Marxist revolutionary Leon Trotsky, it seemed wise to change their name to an all-American one. Recently, I was reminded of my friend Billy Tracy when I read about a young Indian woman, a poet and interfaith activist, who is planning to study in the United States. She thought she might be handicapped by her first name: Swastika. Read more.

I Think My Six-Year-Old Might Be Jesus

Christian Piatt has always known his daughter was a mystic. He writes:
At age three, she announced to us, unsolicited, that she had seen God. I'm not so much for blinding flashes of light and visions, but who can argue with a three year old who's seen God? "Tell me about God," I said. "She has a big, beautiful face." Read more.

This All-Women Hasidic Rock Band Wants Your Help

Your favorite all-women, Hasidic Jewish rock band from Brooklyn needs your help. Throughout the last few years, Bulletproof Stockings have captured headlines, playing packed, women-only shows at some of New York's marquee rock venues, including Arlene's Grocery, Bar Matchless, and the Bitter End. And while the two founding members of the band, Dalia Shusterman and Perl Wolf, have enjoyed the spotlight, they say it's time for the next challenge: recording their first full-length album. Pope Francis Criticized For Church's Stance On Women

Pope Francis paid tribute to International Women's Day during his address Sunday -- the same day the Vatican opened its doors for an "open and frank" discussion about the role of women in the church. International Women's Day, celebrated around the world on March 8th, is an occasion, the pontiff said, "to repeat the importance of women, and the necessity of their presence in life." Read more.

Immigration and the Health of a Nation

Eugene Peterson once wrote, "We measure the health of our nation and the success of our lives in terms of per capita income and gross national product," (Working the Angles). The book was written 25 years ago and Peterson's critique still stands. Add the Consumer Price Index, Dow Industrial Average, S&P 500, Consumer Confidence, Employment statistics, and you are hitting most of the levers for the average person. Christians (especially my tribe, the evangelicals), love to whip out metrics involving certain moral issues like abortion, gay marriage, the right to bear arms and low taxes. They say those provide the means of how we should assess the health of a nation. According to the scriptures, however, one of the primary metrics God uses to assess the health of a nation is hospitality. Read more.

Speaking To God In Doodles

Out of the depths of her despair, Mara Measor started talking to God. The singer-songwriter first started keeping a prayer journal during a year-long service trip to Ethiopia. She felt lonely at first, since she didn't speak the language, so she turned to God for companionship. Then, her prayers turned into doodles. Measor, now 26, said she found it comforting to draw herself in such a childlike way. She'd look at the tiny figure scrawled onto the pages of her journal and think, "She's going to be okay." Hillary Clinton's Possibly Fatal Email Mistake
Hillary Clinton's email scandal showcases that she shouldn't be
president. This has nothing to do with her party or politics -- it has
to do with how she seems to approach a decision -- through tunnel vision
leadership. This method isn't biased on the left or right, but it is
more hardwired into men than women. Unfortunately, Clinton seems to have
this in spades.

In this issue:

  • Postponed: Long-term lane closures on SR 99/Aurora Avenue North
  • Seattle Tunnel Partners disassembling Bertha

Postponed: Long-term lane closures on SR 99/Aurora Avenue North

We are postponing plans for long-term lane closures on SR 99/Aurora Avenue North originally scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 11. These closures were needed to install several large sign foundations for the SR 99 North Access project. While this work must occur, it will be rescheduled to a later date in an effort to minimize impacts to the traveling public. The public will be alerted in advance of any future lane closures.

Full closure of northbound SR 99 tonight

Contractor crews still plan to close northbound SR 99 overnight Monday to straighten the curve in the highway near Mercer Street. SR 99 will be closed from 10 p.m. Monday, March 9 to 6 a.m. Tuesday, March 10 between the Battery Street Tunnel and Valley Street.  All lanes will open at 6 a.m. in time for the morning commute.

Seattle Tunnel Partners disassembling Bertha

Bertha, the SR 99 tunneling machine, reached her stopping point in the tunnel access pit last week, clearing the way for Seattle Tunnel Partners to begin a disassembly process that will likely take weeks.

Bertha moved forward a total of 57 feet between Feb. 17, when mining resumed, and March 3, when she reached her destination. Along the way she built nine permanent concrete tunnel rings, which aren’t visible in the pit because they’re obscured by the ground and the machine’s exterior.

This time-lapse video (links to YouTube) documents Bertha's move into the pit.

With Bertha now in position, crews have begun the challenging task of taking apart the world’s largest tunneling machine. They will move through a number of methodical steps as they prepare to lift four pieces weighing up to 2,000 tons to the surface for repairs. Among other things, they must disconnect hundreds of hoses and cables, remove motors and weld lift points to the machine’s exterior.

When disassembly is complete, a massive red crane (links to YouTube) will move into position above the pit. Several pieces of the machine will be removed before the cutterhead is lifted out of the pit, as illustrated in STP’s repair video (links to YouTube).

SR 520 News of the Week

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 04:11 PM PDT

All 77 pontoons for the new SR 520 floating bridge now complete

final pontoon completion

The SR 520 Program reached a major milestone as crews in Aberdeen have completed the final three pontoons for the new floating bridge. These final pontoons round out the 77 total needed for the new bridge, so with their completion a major phase of construction comes to an end.

A ceremony commemorating the milestone took place in Aberdeen this morning, attended by local and state officials, honoring the community and the hundreds of skilled workers who spent four years building the construction basin and 33 pontoons in Aberdeen. The bridge's other 44 pontoons were built in Tacoma. You can see photos from the event on our Flickr page.

Early Tuesday morning, the final three pontoons will float out of the casting basin. The float-out process involves raising three 50-ton gate sections to let tidal waters into the casting basin, then carefully navigating the football-field-sized pontoons into the Chehalis River.

The Aberdeen site built the largest pontoons required for the new bridge – 21 longitudinal pontoons that are being connected end to end to form the backbone of the new bridge. These final three pontoons are longitudinal pontoons: 360 feet long, three stories high, and 11,000 tons each. They are strong and durable, designed to withstand gale-force winds and support tens of thousands of vehicles a day for at least 75 years.

Once the float-out process is complete, the pontoons will be held in the river until they are inspected. When weather conditions permit, they will be towed by tugboat to Lake Washington for assembly as part of the new bridge.

Shutterbugs, get ready for our Twitter photo contest!

Throughout construction, many members of the public have taken photos of the 74 massive pontoons that have made their way to Lake Washington through the ship canal. In true Northwest fashion, these shutterbugs showed up in rain, snow, fog, or even sun to take photos of the pontoons passing through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard, traveling through Lake Union, or floating past the Arboretum. In the coming weeks, the final three pontoons will make the journey through Seattle, and we're honoring this last glimpse of en route pontoons with a special Twitter photograph contest!

We will post more information in a future program email update and on our Twitter account. The winning prize is top secret! But what we can tell you is that winners may be required to wear a hard hat.

Stay tuned and get those cameras ready!

How racist Is this frat? And what does Waka Flocka have to say?

Frat Boys Caught Singing 'There Will Never Be A Ni**** In SAE'

The national headquarters for Sigma Alpha Epsilon is closing its chapter at the University of Oklahoma after video surfaced Sunday of members on a bus singing racist lyrics about their fraternity. SAE's national office called the video "inappropriate" and said it was "disgusted" by its members behavior.

"In addition, all of the members have been suspended, and those members who are responsible for the incident may have their membership privileges revoked permanently," the national SAE office said in its statement.

Prior to SAE's announcement, University of Oklahoma President David Boren said if they determine it is in fact their chapter of SAE, the fraternity would be removed from campus.

The nine-second video, uploaded by an anonymous user on YouTube, shows a group of college students in formal attire clapping while they sing racist lyrics to the tune of "If You're Happy And You Know It" during a date function. The lyrics as heard in the video are:

"There will never be a ni**** in SAE. There will never be a ni**** in SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me There will never be a ni**** in SAE."

Additional video later surfaced on Instagram.

As anti-racism protests continue to take place on the University of Oklahoma campus following a viral video clip displaying Sigma Alpha Epsilon chanting racist lyrics about their chapter, it appears the college is also beginning to experience backlash from entertainers.

According to an Instagram post, Waka Flocka Flame has cancelled his upcoming April concert at the University due to SAE's offensive behavior.

"I know for a fact the whole school and SAE don't agree with those kids actions so know that I'm not mad at the whole #SAE just those disgusting kids," the rapper wrote on Monday to his 1.1 million followers. "We can't change history but we damn sure can create our own future #DeathToRacism."

Muslim Students Fearful For Future In Wake Of NYPD Surveillance

There are Rutgers students and graduates whose futures are in jeopardy because they were placed under surveillance by the NYPD — operating outside of its jurisdiction — for no other reason than they practice Islam. This troubling reality is at the heart of the lawsuit Hassan v. City of New York, which was argued before judges of the Third Circuit Appellate Court in Philadelphia in January. One of the Rutgers plaintiffs taking part in the complaint worries that she will not be able to pursue a career in international social work, since background checks will link her to a spying program that incorrectly claimed it would expose the "likely whereabouts of terrorists." Rutgers students had no connections to terrorist activities whatsoever. Their "wrongdoing" amounts to being members of the campus Muslim Student Associations in Newark and New Brunswick, which were infiltrated by undercover NYPD agents. Read more.

HUFFPOST HILL - Can Hillary Clinton Disseminate Thousands Of Pages Of Emails And Have It All?

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 02:33 PM PDT

HuffPost Hill
Lindsey Graham has never sent an email, but lest you think the South Carolina senator a total luddite, he *has* figured out the medicine reminder on his Jitterbug. The GOP opposed negotiations with Iran by negotiating with Iran. And a new poll finds Fox News is the most-trusted network news outlet, a development undoubtedly buoyed by Bill O’Reilly’s enterprising D-Day reporting. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Monday, March 9th, 2015:

BLESSED ARE THE PEACERUINERS, FOR THEY SHALL BE CALLED TOM COTTON - Grim: "Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), the organizer of a controversial letter warning Iran that the U.S. government will not necessarily abide by any agreement Iran strikes with the Obama administration, previously told a conservative audience that the goal of congressional action should be to scuttle talks with Iran. The U.S. should, instead, engage in a policy of 'regime change,' he argued... Cotton, for his part, has made no secret that he wants the talks to fail. 'The end of these negotiations isn't an unintended consequence of congressional action. It is very much an intended consequence. A feature, not a bug, so speak,' Cotton said in January, speaking at a conservative conference hosted by the advocacy group Heritage Action for America. Cotton's bald admission would be less interesting had he not been the one to spearhead a Senate effort revealed Monday by Bloomberg View -- an open letter to Iran's leaders signed by 47 Republican senators. The letter explains the workings of the American government to the Iranian regime." [HuffPost]

About that explanation of our constitutional government: they flubbed the role of the Senate in ratifying treaties, as Harvard law professor and former Bush administration honcho Jack Goldsmith pointed out.

Reminder that Tom Cotton loves war.

CLINTON TO TALK ABOUT EMAILS - While we're engaged in this collective email shaming, can we focus our wrath on whomever invented the "Hey" email solicitation? Also everyone at MoveOn.org. Politico: "Hillary Rodham Clinton will soon address the controversy over her use of a private email account at the State Department, and is likely to hold a press conference in New York in the next several days to answer reporters’ questions, according to three people close to the potential Democratic frontrunner. The decision to address the issue, made in the last several days, comes amid a cascade of criticism following New York Times and Associated Press stories in the past week, reporting that Clinton had possibly violated State Department policy by channeling her emails through a private server housed in her suburban New York mansion. The pressure on Clinton has ratcheted up as critics, including some congressional Democrats, have called on her to publicly address the reports. That pressure only increased on Monday as a spokesman for President Obama told reporters that Clinton and the president had, in fact, exchanged emails using Clinton’s private email account during her tenure at Foggy Bottom from 2009 to 2013." [Politico]

Haircuts: Eliot Nelson, Jen Bendery, Paige Lavender, Donte Stallworth.

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Thanks in large part to Republicans cutting unemployment insurance at the state level, the percentage of unemployed people who receive benefits is at a historic low, according to the Economic Policy Institute. And at the time of the previous low point, in 1984, federal benefits were available. Not this time. "Because there were no federal benefit extensions in 2014, workers who exhausted state benefits had less protection from the harm caused by unemployment than any similar cohort of jobless workers since the late 1950s -- when Congress first began benefit extensions,” EPI's Rick McHugh said. CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST MENENDEZ COULD COME SOON - NBC New York: "Criminal charges against U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, could come later this month as a federal grand jury continues to hear evidence in the case, sources familiar with the investigation tell NBC 4 New York. Menendez has been under federal criminal investigation in connection with his ties to Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen. The senator has admitted he accepted free private plane trips from Melgen, including a 2008 trip to the luxury resort of Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. The senator has said he later repaid almost $70,000 for his trips on the doctor’s jet." [NBC New York]

The Michigan attorney general subpoenaed HuffPost reporter Dana Liebelson, but then backed off.

OBAMACARE SPENDING ESTIMATES DOWN - Thanks, Obama. Jeff Young: "Net spending on subsidies for private health insurance and greater enrollment in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program will total $1.2 trillion from next year through 2025. That's 11 percent less than the Congressional Budget Office projected just two months ago. The new estimate doesn't account for spending cuts and tax increases in the law, which the budget agency previously projected would result in a net decrease in the federal budget deficit because of Obamacare. A continuing, historic slowdown in the growth of national spending on health careduring recent years is one major reason for the Congressional Budget Office and Joint Committee on Taxation's re-evaluation of the Affordable Care Act's cost. Economists agree that the recession and slow recovery played a major role in keeping down health care spending as Americans' wallets were tight, and experts predict that spending will rise more quickly as the economy continues to improve. No consensus has emerged regarding the influence of Obamacare's cost-containment initiatives on this trend, but the congressional scorekeepers have incorporated lower health care spending and lower premiums into their calculations." [HuffPost]

SCOTUS REJECTS CONTRACEPTION MANDATE CHALLENGE - Antonin Scalia, gettin' out of your diaphragm. Reuters: "The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday threw out an appeals court decision that went against the University of Notre Dame over its religious objections to the Obamacare health law's contraception requirement. The justices asked the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider its decision in favor of the Obama administration in light of the June 2014 Supreme Court ruling that allowed closely held corporations to seek exemptions from the provision. The court's action means the February 2014 appeals court ruling that denied the South Bend, Indiana-based Roman Catholic university an injunction against the requirement has been wiped out." [Reuters]

Hey, Politico, you also might want to add that "former treasury official" Tony Fratto is also "wall street consultant" Tony Fratto: "FORMER TREASURY OFFICIALS ALSO GIVE CURRENCY RULES THUMBS DOWN: Tony Fratto, a former Treasury official, argued Thursday that it's not even easy to measure the effects of currency manipulation on the trade balance, especially given that there are so many forces that affect a currency's value, such as expectations of monetary policy changes and economic growth. 'The correlation is really weak if you can find it at all,' he argued." [Politico's Morning Trade]

Lindsey Graham revealed yesterday that he has never sent an email.

In our inbox: "The International Mustache Hall of Fame today opened its doors and includes the likes of Tom Selleck, Dr. Martin Luther King, Salvador Dali, President Theodore Roosevelt, John Oates, Rollie Fingers and others. Oates called it, '....perhaps the most deeply satisfying moment of my career.'"

OBAMA LIBRARY DECISION DELAYED FOR CHICAGO MAYORAL ELECTION - Plus this gives them more time to suss out the "Private Property Seized By President Obama's Shock Troops" wing. AP: "President Barack Obama will hold off on announcing the location for his future presidential library until after Chicago's runoff election for mayor, two people familiar with the decision said, in a bid to avoid politicizing his legacy project. Last year the Barack Obama Foundation, which is screening proposals for the library, said the president and first lady Michelle Obama would announce the winner by the end of March. But with the Chicago race still up in the air, the announcement is no longer expected until after the April 7 runoff, said the individuals, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the library...But the individuals with knowledge of the delay said that Obama and his foundation wanted to avoid injecting the library decision into the political fray — or to be seen as giving Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel an unfair advantage." [AP]

FOX NEWS MOST TRUSTED & MISTRUSTED NEWS NETWORK - Only seven percent of respondents think MSNBC is the most trustworthy news network, which undoubtedly would be higher if "Dr. Nancy" were still on the air. USA Today: "On the national front, 20% said they trusted Fox 'a great deal' while 35% said "somewhat." CNN (18% for "a great deal" and 43% for 'somewhat'), NBC News (14%, 46%), CBS News (14%, 50%), ABC News (14%, 50%) and MSNBC (11%, 41%) followed. 'Fox News may be the most trusted in the network and cable news race, but they all take a back seat to your local news,' said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll...Underscoring cable news' more overtly political slant, 26% of respondents also said they didn't trust Fox News "at all" as a news source, the highest among the national TV news outlets mentioned in the survey. MSNBC came in second at 24%." [USA Today]

BECAUSE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR - Here's a buffalo saying wut up.

SO LONG! - Mediaite: "Exactly five years ago this week, as the Congressional debate over the Affordable Care Act was coming to its eventual conclusion, Rush Limbaugh made a bold statement about his future as a resident of the United State of America. Speaking to a caller who expressed concerns about the impact of Obamacare on the U.S. healthcare system, Limbaugh said, 'If this passes and it’s five years from now and all that stuff gets implemented, I am leaving the country. I’ll go to Costa Rica.'" [Mediaite]

"There's No Adult Supervision": Inside the Chaos at NBC

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 01:40 PM PDT

If you are reading this, at some point you opted to receive regular updates from HuffPost Media. We've been quiet for a while, but today we are launching Media Debrief, a run-down of the day's top industry news and opinion. Each weekday we'll tell you what insiders in the media industry are talking about, thinking about, reading. Suggestions or tips? E-mail us.

THE NUTGRAF

New York magazine's exposé of the troubles at NBC is the talk of the media world; this morning, it captured the covers of both the New York Daily News and the New York Post, whose cover features a hilarious Photoshop job of Tom Brokaw in a ghost costume haunting embattled NBC anchor Brian Williams. Among the piece's revelations: Williams has an inferiority complex about his blue-collar background and lack of a college education, and has angled at various points to take over the "David Letterman Show," "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" and "The Tonight Show." NBC News President Deborah Turness ruffled feathers when she came on board by announcing the company "hadn't kept up with the times in all sorts of ways, for maybe 15 years" and "had gone to sleep." Here's a Management 101 lesson: don't come in trashing everything that came before you. Oh, and Matt Lauer thinks "Good Morning America" is mostly "tabloid garbage." All this seems to have culminated in last Friday's big announcement from 30 Rockefeller Plaza: Former president Andy Lack is replacing Pat Fili-Krushel as the chairman of NBC News.

TOP STORIES

Inside the Chaos at NBC

The problems at the network don't start or end with Brian Williams. "Today," once the undisputed king of the morning talk show lineup, has been stuck in second place since the departure of Ann Curry two years ago, the ratings for "Meet the Press" are in the dump and the Williams fiasco has cast a pall over the network's most prized asset, the "Nightly News." Read more.

What Now For Brian Williams?

While the embattled "NBC Nightly News" anchor serves a six-month suspension for fabricating his reporting experience during the Iraq War in 2003, a new Quinnipiac University National poll released Monday asked if Williams should eventually be allowed to return to his position. Read more.

Frat Caught Singing to Lynch 'N------s'
University of Oklahoma President David Boren slammed his school's Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter for singing "there'll never be a nigger at SAE" and something about "hanging from a tree." In a press conference Monday, Boren stressed the school's "zero-tolerance policy" toward racism. "As far as I'm concerned, [the fraternity] will not be back. Not as long as I'm president," Boren said, adding the university will probe not only the fraternity but "individual perpetrators," and investigate "whether we can take action against individual students." Apparently the video surfaced after a tipster sent it to a black campus activist group, which then posted it on Twitter. Boren immediately shut down the SAE chapter and said frat members have until midnight to pack their bags. "You are disgraceful. You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves 'Sooners.'" Boren said racists across the country deserve the same harsh treatment. The frat house was vandalized after the video went public.

A 14-year-old boy in Florida was arrested by Port St. Lucie police for allegedly attempting to hire a friend to kill his family and make it look like a robbery gone bad. GOP Tells Iran: Deal Dies After Obama
Forty-seven Republican senators signed an open letter to Iran's leaders warning them that any deal they cut with the U.S. will only last as long as President Obama is in office. The unusual partisan move when it comes to foreign policy was dismissed by Democrats as a "stunt" that "weakens America's hand." Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif called it "propaganda" with "no legal value." The White House said it "interferes" with negotiations.
