UC Irvine Student Government Bans American Flag, Others From Campus Area

The student council of a southern California university passed a bill that would ban the hanging of any national flag in the common area of student government offices, school officials said on Friday.

The measure, passed by six undergraduates on the University of California at Irvine's student legislative council, said that national flags bear a range of cultural significances that could be interpreted negatively by some.

The resolution added that national flags - citing the United States flag in particular - have been "flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism" and "serve as symbols of patriotism or weapons for nationalism."

UCLA's Student Council Tries To Hide Video Of Its Members Questioning A Jewish Student

Avinoam Baral, USAC president, had nominated Rachel Beyda, 20, for a position on the university's Student Judicial Board. She appeared at a Feb. 10 council meeting to answer questions and make her case as a solid candidate.

But members of the council kept focusing on Beyda's Jewish identity, video from the meeting shows.

"Given that you are a Jewish student and very active in the Jewish community... how do you see yourself being able to maintain an unbiased view?" asked Fabienne Roth, a USAC general representative.

Baral interjected, saying, "I don't think that's a question we'd feel comfortable asking other students."

But another person in the room asked Beyda if she had "any political affiliations that could cause a conflict of interest."

"If I ever felt that I had a vested interest or any bias, I would remove myself from the decision," Beyda responded. She stayed upbeat and collected throughout the questioning.

After Beyda left the room, USAC members continued to voice concerns, many of which appeared to be related to Beyda's being Jewish.

How College Students Are Taking The Lessons From Selma Back To Campus

As the nation marks the 50th anniversary of the historic civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, a group of Valparaiso University students say Selma isn't just history -- it's also a blueprint.

Roughly 50 students from the school, located in northwest Indiana an hour outside Chicago, are participating in a trip to Selma this weekend to visit historic sites, meet with activists who took part in the marches and learn how to apply the lessons from half a century ago to the ongoing struggle for equality today.

"A lot of these people [who were directly involved] are still alive, fighting for the same cause they were 50 years ago," 21-year-old VU junior Jacki Fernandez told The Huffington Post on Friday. "The story isn't dead -- their story is alive."

"Meeting people who marched reminded me these people are still alive and they're still struggling for these things," said 19-year-old sophomore Micia Dismuke. "The struggle isn't over. Even people my age who can't register to vote need to fight for that, to make sure we can continue to do that -- otherwise their struggle will be in vain."

Stephanie Zabala, a 21-year-old junior from Dominican University who joined the group in Alabama, said making the pilgrimage to Selma is important for every person who wants to "interact with their own identity."

"Not all of us are African-American; we come from different backgrounds, but we're trying to find our identity in this movement," Zabala told HuffPost. "There are things we are fighting for -- integration, LGBT rights -- things that are all so intersected. Those things began here 50 years ago, and we need to understand the systemic issues that still exist."

VIDEO: Eight Hurt When Roof Collapses During College Party In California

Eight people were injured when a garage roof packed with party-goers collapsed in Central California early Saturday, fire officials said.

Between 50 and 100 people were standing on the roof when it gave way just after sunrise during a party attended by students from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, the local fire department said.

Eight people were hurt and four were taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, the San Luis Obispo Fire Department said.
