Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program News  Dec. 5, 2014  In this issue:  Alaskan Way Viaduct to close overnight Saturday SR 99 Tunnel Project update Free gift wrapping, free parking and dogs in sweaters coming to Pioneer Square Alaskan Way Viaduct to close overnight Saturday Both directions of State Route 99 will close overnight Saturday between the West Seattle Bridge and the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel.  The closure – which will last from Saturday, Dec. 6 at 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 – will allow crews to move heavy equipment across the roadway and conduct survey work on SR 99.  SR 99 Tunnel Project update Public safety is our top priority, which is why we installed a state-of-the-art settlement monitoring system as part of the SR 99 Tunnel Project. Recently, that system detected approximately one inch of ground settlement near the pit Seattle Tunnel Partners is building to access and repair the tunneling machine. We have also seen the same amount of settlement on the Alaskan Way Viaduct; the amount of settlement lessens in the surrounding area.   Some settlement was expected during tunnel construction and while the tunneling machine repair work was underway. This settlement appears to have occurred in the last month.  We have observed no new damage to the viaduct nor have we observed any effect on buildings or utilities in the surrounding area. WSDOT crews are conducting additional surveys this weekend to verify this information, including an inspection of the viaduct and a visual inspection of the adjacent areas. While we are conducting this additional work, we are confident that there is no risk to public safety.  As we know more, we will provide updates on our website. Subscribe here to Sound Transit news and information   Record Sounder ridership The ridership numbers for October are in and once again the news is good. Overall, boardings on our trains and buses were up 7 percent for the month, compared to the same month a year earlier. Sounder led the way with boardings up an amazing 16 percent for the month. Sounder’s 345,320 boardings in October is a record. ST Express boardings were up 7 percent in October and Link about 5 percent. Vanshare incentives We are working closely with King County Metro on a Vanshare program that includes great incentives for those commuters who want to get started. We recently extended the Vanshare Incentive Program through March of next year, as well as increasing the incentives to pay for the full monthly cost of $185. Vanshare offers transit riders a reliable connection from home to station and starting is as easy as three neighbors deciding to share a van. Once you’re in the program you will receive reserved parking at your station - no more searching for a spot. The Vanshare incentives program is part of the Sound Transit Board-sponsored Parking Management Pilot, which launched earlier this year to help reduce crowding at our park-and-ride lots. Prep for winter The recent cold, snow, mudslides and trees on tracks is a good reminder that we’re definitely in the winter season. This page on our website gives you tips on making your way around during winter weather. Follow us on Twitter and sign up for Rider Alerts that tell you how the weather could be altering your route. A couple of quick tips: Wet or icy station platforms can be slick. Buses and trains are unlikely to stay on schedule so dress warmly for the wait. Apple Accused of Secretly Snuffing Non-iTunes Music Purchases
Apple for two years surreptitiously removed from iPods any music not
purchased at its iTunes store, prosecutors charged Wednesday in federal
court. The accusations surfaced during the trial of a 10-year-old class-
action lawsuit claiming Apple violated federal and state laws when it
issued iPod software updates that prevented the devices from playing
songs not purchased on iTunes.

"Ice skating is walking in cursive." Welcome to The Carry-On, a handy grab bag of HuffPost Travel’s most riveting industry snippets, travel hacks and destination discoveries from the past week. In this roundup, we hope to pack seven days of our site’s breaking news into a tote of travel-size tidbits, small enough to fit any overhead bin. After emerging from our turkey coma in the middle of a mile-long security line (TOTAL NIGHTMARE), we learned about 10 American places we should have known about but don't known about yet. Apparently, Hawaii is a place we don't know about. This seems unlikely... but then again, turkey comas can do serious stuff to your memory. We were also reminded that Chicagoans will get very angry if you fail to support their strange hatred of ketchup. You say to-MAY-ato, I say to-MAH-to... and we say JUST PUT KETCHUP ON YOUR HOTDOGS, PEOPLE! While their neighbors abstain from condiments, people in Minneapolis consume ketchup and turn out just fine: in fact, they're some of the most attractive people in America, with "long limbs" and "sparkly eyes." One point for Heinz. Breaking news: Disney World is not always fun. We always knew those "It's A Small World" dolls were up to no good. And one lesson you learn on a Caribbean island? "You don't need anything." ... hey, if we had sun, sand and bottomless beverages, we wouldn't "need anything" either. We just want to be on the nearest beach. Happy weekend, travelers!
