| Rolling Stone's Bombshell Article On UVa Is Falling Apart Posted: 06 Dec 2014 03:09 PM PST Saturday December 6th, 2014 Rolling Stone's UVA Gang Rape Story Begins To Unravel CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Three weeks after a bombshell Rolling Stone article detailed an alleged brutal gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity, the fraternity released a statement that rebutted some of its central claims and the magazine is distancing itself from the article. Will Dana, the managing editor of Rolling Stone, said in a statement Friday that the magazine had chosen not to contact any of the accused rapists at the request of "Jackie," the alleged rape victim at the center of the story, but that the magazine's trust in Jackie had been "misplaced." "In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackie's account," Dana said. "We were trying to be sensitive to the unfair shame and humiliation many women feel after a sexual assault and now regret the decision to not contact the alleged assaulters to get their account. We are taking this seriously and apologize to anyone who was affected by the story." Reached by The Huffington Post, friends of Jackie said she was under "extreme duress" and could not speak publicly at the moment. The fraternity said it began its own internal review after the Rolling Stone article was released. One major flaw in the details of the alleged gang rape, according to the fraternity: The attack allegedly happened at the house during a party, but the fraternity said there was no "date function or social event" during the weekend in question. It also refuted the suggestion a "ritualized sexual assault" is part of its pledging of initiation process. "Our initial doubts as to the accuracy of the article have only been strengthened as alumni and undergraduate members have delved deeper," the Virginia Alpha chapter of Phi Psi said in a statement Friday. College Students Greet Eric Garner Decision Already Primed For Protest An estimated 400 students and staff at Princeton University participated in a campus walkout and die-in Thursday, according to the demonstration's organizers. It was just one of many campus protests across the country in response to the announcement Wednesday evening that a grand jury would not indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the July 17 choking death of Eric Garner. "As black students at an elite university, our black bodies are not safeguarded from police brutality," said Wilglory Tanjong, a Princeton undergrad and activist, in a statement. "We are one interaction, one bullet away from becoming another hashtag. When a black man is murdered on camera, and nothing happens, it is time to end any spirit of complacency." Harvard's Black Students Pen Powerful Response To Grand Jury Decisions Students have demonstrated nationwide frustrations with two recent grand jury decisions against the indictment of police officers responsible for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Among them, is Harvard University's Black Student Association who, collectively, penned an official response to these recent deaths at the hands of police. The statement laments the deaths of Yvette Johnson, John Crawford III, Tamir Rice and others, calling for an end to police brutality and "institutional racism." Student co-authors Sarah Cole, Miles Malbrough and Keyanna Wigglesworth emphasize the power in numbers, and urge comradeship among protesters. Jimmy Carter Pushes Colleges To Get Tougher On Campus Rapists American colleges need to levy harsher punishments on students who commit sexual assault, former President Jimmy Carter told Yale University President Peter Salovey during a public forum on Tuesday. Carter has been speaking out on the issue since his latest book, A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power, was released in March. At the Yale event, the former president explained that students at Emory University, where he serves as a "distinguished professor," pledge to report any sexual assaults they know about to authorities. He said that many campus rapists are serial predators, "but they know they can get away with it on college campuses." "We're working hard on this issue," Salovey said, citing adjudication and punishment as two areas that he feels his Ivy League university is handling well. Carter responded, "That's good," but then noted that on the way to the event, he had been reading a 2013 Huffington Post article about Yale not expelling several students after finding them guilty of "nonconsensual sex." "You can just warn a boy and chastise him -- that doesn't help," Carter said, though he added, "Expulsion is a very difficult thing for universities to accept as a policy." The former president's comments were met with a round of applause. Columbia Football Coach Resigns Amid Abuse Claims Following reports this week that dozens of football players have accused Columbia University football coach Pete Mangurian of mistreating the team, the university announced Mangurian's resignation Friday. "I have accepted Pete Mangurian's resignation because we have all come to the conclusion that it would be in the best interests of Columbia Athletics," Columbia President Lee Bollinger announced in a statement. "Under [Athletic Director] Dianne Murphy, Columbia teams have built a new winning tradition across our men's and women's sports and we expect no less of our football program." On Thursday, the Columbia Daily Spectator described a letter reportedly signed by 25 Columbia football players and sent to a handful of university officials, including Bollinger. In the letter, which according to the CDS was later withdrawn, the authors reportedly accused Mangurian of denying concussion diagnoses and refusing to let players rest after injury. Senate Democrat Wants To Take Money From College Students To Pay Loan Contractors An outgoing Senate Democrat wants to take federal money from low-income college students to pay student loan contractors, whose tactics toward borrowers have been criticized by consumer advocates, federal regulators and the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chairman of the Senate education committee and the appropriations subcommittee in charge of federal education expenditures, has proposed taking $303 million from the Pell grant program to increase revenues for some of the nation's biggest student loan specialists, according to a July 24 version of a 2015 fiscal year spending bill now being negotiated by congressional leaders. Student advocates and congressional aides largely missed Harkin's move last summer -- partly because the full text of the spending bill wasn't publicly released until six weeks after Harkin's subcommittee approved it. They only noticed it in recent days as congressional negotiators work off his bill in the rush to finalize discussions on the federal government's 2015 spending plans. Don't Let Rolling Stone's Bad Journalism Hurt The Anti-Rape Movement Don't let the holes in this story diminish your rage, do not let the fire burning across our schools and nation be smothered by shoddy journalism and a troubled and traumatized girl who has clearly suffered. ![]() Get Huffington Post on the Go | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
