LISTEN: Freeing Ourselves From The Chokehold of Racism

The Day I Lost Faith In America

I didn't cry. But a part of me died. When I heard the news about Eric Garner, my casual 'faith' in America died -- and I am thankful for its death.

Cracked Wide Open Around Race

Our nation is cracking wide open on the fault line of race. In order to repair what is broken, we need each other. We need to heal, to connect, and to be the change.

Fear Of Black Bodies In Motion

Throughout our history black bodies in motion have been deemed a threat. This is the common denominator in every case in this recent reign of terror on black bodies.

12 Reasons Sex Is Much More Satisfying After 50

By the time we're in our 50s and beyond, our kids are grown and out the door, our careers are established, we're reasonably financially stable, and life isn't such a struggle. Editor's Pick: Things Not to Say to an Irate Customer, or Anthem's Epic Fail

Mick Brady

I have sympathy for customer service representatives -- really, I do. I know that customers can be ignorant, demanding and ill-mannered. On the other hand, CSRs should be trained to deal with bad-tempered customers. Also, CSRs should be trained to avoid provoking pleasant and agreeable customers to the edge of meltdown -- or beyond. If your ears are burning, Elizabeth at Anthem Blue Cross, yes, I'm talking about you. [More...]

Google Releases Consumers From the Scourge of CAPTCHA
Google on Wednesday announced the no-CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA, a kinder, gentler way of distinguishing human Web surfers from bots. The new system requires that users confirm their humanity by checking a box to the left of the statement "I'm not a robot." A privacy statement is displayed on the right. Twitter Gives Harassed Users a Little Ammo
Twitter has announced a revamp of its system for reporting abuse on its service. The new changes make it easier to report account impersonation, harassment of others on the service, and threats of harm to oneself or others, said Shreyas Doshi, Twitter's director of product management. The changes allow subscribers to report abuse of others, and simplify flagging tweets and accounts for review. [More...]

America: [0] Day(s) Without A Traumatic Racial Episode

Posted: 04 Dec 2014 02:43 PM PST

HuffPost Hill
House Speaker John Boehner sounded a bullish note today on the cromnibus, which is a hybrid baked good that combines a croissant and a trillion-dollar spending bill. Mitt Romney loves the people in his inner circle because they're just the right hype. And the House voiced its disapproval of President Obama's immigration action. It was the 10th-worst thing to happen to brown people this week. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday. December 4th, 2014:

HOUSE VOTES AGAINST OBAMA IMMIGRATION ACTION - Nothing more American than a news cycle centered on a civil rights violation that drowns out another one by Congress. Elise Foley: "House Republicans on Thursday voted to block the president's executive actions on immigration, approving a dead-on-arrival bill that would keep millions of undocumented parents and people who came to the U.S. as children at risk of deportation. The bill was approved in a 219-197 vote, with three Republican members voting "present." The results largely fell along party lines, but seven Republicans voted against the measure, while three Democrats voted for it. The vote was meant, in part, to give conservatives a chance to voice their disapproval of President Barack Obama's immigration executive actions before they work next week to fund the government, including the Department of Homeland Security, that will carry out the new policies. Obama announced executive actions last month that could shield up to 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation. The largest component is a new program, which will begin sometime next year, that will allow undocumented parents of U.S. citizen children and legal permanent residents to stay and work legally if they have been here for five or more years, and if they pass a background check and meet other requirements. The executive actions also expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which was started in 2012 to give work authorization and protection to undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. under the age of 16 and meet other requirements. The White House issued a veto threat for the House bill on Thursday, saying it "would have devastating consequences" for families and immigration enforcement efforts. Republicans have said both DACA and the new executive actions are an overreach of Obama's authority that threatens the Constitution. They took to the House floor on Thursday to decry the move." [HuffPost]

Mitt Romney's inner circle is convinced he's running, according to Business Insider.

HOUSE PASSES AWFUL DEFENSE BILL - Mike McAuliff: "The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a defense bill that ducked the debate on new military action in Iraq and Syria, but did include dozens of unrelated federal land deals, including one that gives sacred Native American land to a foreign mining firm that partners with Iran. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 sets the parameters for spending some $585 billion over the next year, including nearly $64 billion in "overseas contingency operations," which will pay for continuing the military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the new actions targeting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. What was excluded from the bill was any consideration of whether President Barack Obama has the authority to continue fighting the old wars and the new ones, based on authorizations passed in 2001 to target those behind Sept. 11 and in 2002 to topple Saddam Hussein." [HuffPost]

BOEHNER IMPLIES HE WON'T KOWTOW TO BASE - Roll Call: "As conservatives push back against a bill to fund the government past Dec. 11, Speaker John A. Boehner signaled Thursday that he didn't expect to make any sizable changes to the so-called 'cromnibus' in order to placate voices to the right. 'I expect that we'll have bipartisan support to pass the omnibus,' Boehner told reporters Thursday, in response to a question on whether the Ohio Republican anticipated needing some Democratic votes to pass the bill, and whether that would give Democrats leverage on negotiating riders in the appropriations bill. Conservatives are bashing the cromnibus — which would fund all elements of government until October except the Department of Homeland Security, which would be funded until March or February — because it does not block President Barack Obama's executive action on immigration." [Roll Call]

BIG TNR SHAKEUP - Michael Calderone reports that Frank Foer is the latest casualty of CEO jargon: "In one of the biggest editorial shake-ups in The New Republic's 100-year history, editor Franklin Foer and literary editor Leon Wieseltier resigned on Thursday amid an internal dispute over the magazine's editorial direction. Management announced plans to reimagine the venerable politics and culture magazine 'as a vertically integrated digital media company' and halve the number of print issues published per year. Gabriel Snyder, who is currently overseeing digital efforts at Bloomberg Media and was previously top editor at Gawker and The Wire, has been hired to replace Foer." [HuffPost]

HUFFPOST HILL FACTS OF LIFE: There is a jobs report tomorrow morning.

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - The national conversation about race, via Hannah Baldwin: "About 50 activists marching from Ferguson to Jefferson City encountered a hostile counter-protest Wednesday in Rosebud. About 200 people met the marchers as they reached Rosebud around noon, activists said. A display of fried chicken, a melon and a 40-ounce beer bottle had been placed in the street. A Confederate flag flew. Counter-protestors shouted racial epithets." [Columbia Missourian]

JOHN BOEHNER: HEALER OF THE RACES - Finished basement summit? John'll bring the mixed nuts. Sabrina Siddiqui: "House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said on Thursday that the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, two unarmed black men who were killed by police in recent months, are 'serious tragedies' that warrant more answers. Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Boehner offered his first public comments on the decisions of two separate grand juries not to indict the police officers involved in the deaths of Brown and Garner. A grand jury declined last week to indict Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, for killing Brown, and on Wednesday, it was announced that Officer Daniel Pantaleo would not be indicted for the death of Garner in Staten Island, New York. 'Clearly both of these are serious tragedies that we've seen in our society and I think the American people want to understand more of what the facts were,' Boehner said. 'There are a lot of unanswered questions that the Americans have and, frankly, I have.'" [HuffPost]

PETER KING UNAPOLOGETIC ABOUT KINGSPLAINING - Our dream is Barack Obama and Peter King reenacting the Prince/Eddie Murphy/Magic Johnson scene from "Do The Right Thing." Igor Bobic: "Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) is sticking by his assertion that, had Eric Garner been healthier, he would not have died after a police officer placed him in a chokehold. 'There was no damage to the wind pipe, and no damage to the neck. If he had not been obese, if he had not had diabetes, if he had not asthma, this probably would not have have happened. Nobody intended this to have happened,' King said Thursday on Fox News. Garner's death was ruled a homicide caused by compression to his neck and chest, as well as the way he was positioned on the ground by police officers. His asthma, obesity and hypertensive cardiovascular disease were also contributing factors to his death. A grand jury on Wednesday decided not to indict the officer who placed him in a chokehold, prompting protests across the nation." [HuffPost]

EVEN TRENT LOTT KIND OF SURPRISED BY THE SENATE'S DYSFUNCTION - Sam Stein: "Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott encouraged his fellow Republicans on Thursday to work on a technical fix to the Affordable Care Act to ensure that those purchasing coverage on federally run exchanges would continue receiving subsidies. The Mississippi Republican said that when he was in office, it was routine to make clarifying changes to laws after they passed. It happened, he said, 'almost always.' 'There was always, on a major bill, we'd have technical corrections, right? Almost immediately [we'd correct them]' Lott said, at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. When he was asked point blank if he would encourage Republicans to work on a technical fix to Obamacare, he responded without hesitation: 'Sure, yeah, I would.'" [HuffPost]

WARREN BUFFETT BETS ON HILLARY - Bloomberg: "Warren Buffett has said he's willing to "put money" on Hillary Clinton winning the 2016 presidential race. Turns out, he really meant it. The Oracle of Omaha gave the maximum donation allowed to Ready for Hillary last quarter, his first-ever check to the sort of independent political groups that he's scorned in the past. Buffett, who is the third richest man in the world, gave $25,000, the most any individual can donate under the committee's self-imposed cap, according to a person familiar with Ready for Hillary's post-election financial disclosure report. The group has raised more than $11 million to finance its efforts to lay the groundwork for a Clinton presidential campaign. Their latest report is due to be filed with the Federal Election Commission by midnight Thursday." [Bloomberg]

Talking money update: "A handful of hedge fund executives aiming to direct more taxpayer money to charter schools pooled their own vast resources to help elect a Republican majority in the New York State Senate last month. They won on election night. Now, it looks like they'll get what they wanted policy-wise. From the final week of September through Election Day, the super PAC New Yorkers for a Balanced Albany, which is managed by the pro-charter school group StudentsFirst NY, spent $4.4 million on eight state Senate races. The effort was the largest of any super PAC during the New York state Senate elections and the most spent by any group on those races. Soon after the election, the state Senate's Republican leader, Dean Skelos, declared that increasing funds for charter schools and lifting the cap on the number of such schools in New York City and the state would be top agenda items for the next legislative session." [HuffPost's Paul Blumenthal]
