| So Many Yik Yak Threats This Month Posted: 25 Nov 2014 03:45 PM PST Tuesday November 25th, 2014 University Of Chicago Says Racially Motivated Facebook Threat Was A Hoax As the University of Chicago reels from a controversy over racist Halloween costumes and cultural sensitivity on campus, new information has come to light, further complicating an already tense relationship between students and the administration. On Monday, the university said that a supposed Facebook hacking incident related to the controversy was actually a hoax. "The owner of the Facebook account claimed responsibility for the posting," read a statement published Monday on the school's official website. The university had partnered with federal authorities to investigate a threatening Facebook post, which appeared last week on a student's account and was initially thought to be the work of a hacker. The posting appeared to threaten Vincente Perez -- a student activist instrumental in bringing recent attention to what some call the school's "culture of intolerance" -- and included explicit language and references to rape. "I am personally targeted for fighting for racial justice on campus," Perez wrote on Twitter of the threatening Facebook post soon after it appeared. University Of California Students Protest Tuition Hikes With Massive Campus Walkout University of California students participated in a statewide campus walkout Monday as part of their ongoing protests against a significant tuition hike. The movement is anchored at UC Berkeley, where hundreds of students have occupied the campus's Wheeler Hall since a committee of the UC Board of Regents voted Wednesday to raise tuition 5 percent per year for five years, bumping next year's in-state student base costs from $12,192 to $12,804 and ultimately to $15,564 in 2019 -- not including additional fees, books, and room and board. College Students Charged For Making Threats On Yik Yak As the University of Chicago reels from a controversy over racist Halloween costumes and cultural sensitivity on campus, new information has come to light, further complicating an already tense relationship between students and the administration. In Emergency Meeting, UVA Announces More Steps To Address Campus Rape The University of Virginia's governing body, the Board of Visitors, announced during a special meeting held Tuesday that the school will begin to take several steps to address sexual assault on campus. Board Rector George Keith Martin announced that Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring hired the law firm O'Melveny & Myers to review UVA's sexual assault policies, the same group hired by Occidental College for similar guidance. Martin is asking they advise the university on various issues, including how to handle "a serious and credible allegation of sexual misconduct" where the survivor is not willing to go forward with a complaint. The special meeting came after a Rolling Stone article alleged multiple women were gang-raped at the UVA Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, though no one was ever punished for the assaults, and none of the cases were sent to police. UVA was already undergoing a sweeping investigation of its sexual assault policies by the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights. Martin said the school will now examine sexual violence prevention training for fraternity members, and possibly overhaul the Greek system. The board will have a town hall meeting, he promised, once concrete proposals are on the table. Former George W. Bush Official Named Franklin Pierce University President Former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card has been named Franklin Pierce University's fifth president. Card, a former Franklin Pierce trustee, starts Jan. 12, the university announced Tuesday. He succeeds James Birge, who became president in 2009 and announced his intent to resign last summer. Card was most recently acting dean of the George H.W. Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. He grew up in Holbrook, Massachusetts, and served on Franklin Pierce's board of trustees from 1996 to 2000. College President: You Can Stop Rape By Not Drinking Or Having Casual Sex

Why I'm Thankful That I Stutter Stuttering was always considered a flaw. It was something that I had to live with for the rest of my life. Something that could be fixed -- maybe -- but would take years of effort. Everyone stutters at some point or another but for me it happened more often than I'd like and at times there was nothing I could do to fix it. Today's Story Highlights
Malware Linked to Brits, NSA
A sophisticated malware program called "Regin" has been used in systematic spying campaigns against a range of international targets
since at least 2008, Symantec reported. Regin is a backdoor-type Trojan
with a structure that displays a degree of technical competence rarely
seen in malware. "It's a beautiful piece of architecture," said Scott
Borg, CEO of the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit.

Wristband Heads Off Password Headaches
Has software glut got you down? Do you reuse passwords because creating unique ones for all your online accounts would cause a memory overload?
If so, you may be interested in a bit of jewelry called the "Everykey,"
by a startup with the same name. Everykey is a wristband that removes
the need to remember the countless log-in credentials we use every day.

Lollipop's Encryption Takes a Hefty Toll
The new full-disk encryption feature that's enabled by default in Android 5.0 Lollipop comes at a hefty price in terms of performance,
according to a recent benchmark report. In fact, when full-disk
encryption is enabled, random read performance drops by 62.9 percent,
while random write performance falls by 50.5 percent, AnandTech reported
late last week.

Thoughts of Thanksgiving for All That Is FOSS
Well Thanksgiving week is upon us here in the land of stars and stripes, and in anticipation of all the social events soon to besiege us, more
than a few Linux bloggers have been practicing keeping their favorite
barstools warm down at the blogosphere's Punchy Penguin Saloon. How
chilly would those stools get if we were all flitting here and there
from this party to that? It would be truly unkind.
