On all four days of the weekend there are events that will affect traffic and Transit in several areas, including the annual Turkey Trot on Thursday; Macy's Holiday Parade and Westlake Tree Lighting on Friday; the Seattle 5K Run and Kids' Marathon in the Seattle Center and downtown Seattle areas on Saturday, and the Seattle Marathon on Sunday.

Engage with King County

How would you prioritize King County's environmental goals?
King County wants to hear from you and what you think our environmental priorities should be. Take a quick survey to help us shape our vision for a greener King County.

Take part in improving your community
Last call to get your applications in for a 2015 Community Service Area (CSA) Grant that could be worth up to $5,000. The deadline for applications from unincorporated area residents for projects in their community is Dec. 8, and awards will be announced in March.

News

King County Council approves first-ever biennial budget
The King County Council approved the 2015-16 county budget on Nov. 17. The adopted budget includes the following new items of interest to residents of unincorporated King County:

  • Creation of a Domestic Violence unit in the King County Sheriff’s office including two detectives and a community service officer;
  • Additional funding to support County roads;
  • Collaborative funding to maintain community health centers in Federal Way, Auburn, White Center for the next two years and Northshore for another year;
  • Maintenance of current levels of transit services, including increased funding for transit’s alternative services delivery program;
  • Maintaining resources to work on land-use abatement cases; and
  • Additional funding for noxious weed control.

These initiatives are in addition to items already supported in the 2015-16 budget including:

  • No increase in fees for solid waste or surface water management;
  • Maintaining current numbers of Sheriff’s deputies and sergeants, and continued support for Sheriff’s storefront offices in West Hill, North Highline and Maple Valley;
  • Investments in upgraded play structures at Five Mile Lake, Maplewood, Lakewood and Skyway parks;
  • The Department of Permitting and Environmental Review will provide strategic plan update support for Skyway, Vashon Island and other local subareas;
  • Community-building grant opportunities will continue to be offered by the Unincorporated Community Service Area Program.

Renewed effort to get everyone in King County insured, as second season is underway
The next open enrollment period to renew or sign up for low-cost private insurance began Nov. 15 and ends Feb. 15. For more information, visit the website. You may be eligible for free health insurance, depending on your income. If you qualify for Washington Apple Health (also called Medicaid), enrollment is open all year and you can sign up any time.

Local Food Economy Initiative
The Kitchen Cabinet, Executive Constantine’s advisory panel for his Local Food Economy Initiative, has released draft targets, strategies, and action items. The panel’s final report is expected early in 2015; read the draft documents on the website.

Environmental health fees at farmers markets
King County’s food safety inspection program has been effective in reducing food safety violations. A recent review found that the cost of providing inspections, supported by fees from farmers market vendors, is actually higher than current fees, so an increase is being considered. Produce sellers are typically exempt from permits, but market coordinators and food stalls that sell ready-to-eat foods require them. The King County Council has directed Public Health to find ways to reduce the impact of fee increases, and the agency is working with the community and stakeholders to find solutions for keeping fees lower.

Metro to deliver more customized alternatives to bus service to meet local transit needs
The County’s new 2015-16 budget provides Metro Transit with greater flexibility to meet the specific transit needs of local communities. The budget includes additional funding to expand cost-effective alternatives, such as shuttles, rideshares, community vans and bicycles. For more information, visit the website.

Be prepared for winter weather
This winter will again bring challenges for transportation in unincorporated King County. If there is a region-wide snow and ice storm, the County will only be able to plow half as many roads as it has in the past, so there is a greater change you could become snowbound or disconnected from the road network. Learn more about snow routes, preparedness and alerts on the website.

The Wastemobile
While the roving service that goes from city to city to collect hazardous waste has stopped for the winter, year-round disposal services are available at these locations for households and some small businesses in King County.

Free Fair Housing Workshop
On Dec. 3, transitional and shelter housing management and social services staff are welcome to attend a Fair Housing 101 session from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in room 123 of the Chinook Building, 401 Fifth Avenue in downtown Seattle. For details and directions, visit the workshop website. Extensive free fair housing materials included. Please pre-register by emailing or calling 206-263-2446.

Community organizations receive grant awards
Two community organizations serving residents of urban unincorporated areas recently received grant funding through the Seattle Foundation and King County’s Communities of Opportunity to support local initiatives. Skyway Solutions and the White Center Community Development Association were two of 11 awards granted.  For more information, visit the website.

Environmental career opportunities at King County
The King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP) is a leading public agency that protects and preserves King County’s quality of life. If you want to make a difference in this region’s environmental quality, consider joining the DNRP team! There are many career opportunities to explore, visit the King County Jobs website for current openings.

Light rail PROJECT UPDATE: Northgate Link Extension

Photo of artists presenting designs for permanent art at Roosvelt Station

On Thursday, Nov. 20 the public met Roosevelt Station artists Luca Buvoli and R & R Studios (Roberto Behar & Rosario Marquardt) at Roosevelt High School. The artists presented their designs for the permanent art at Roosevelt Station.

Second tunnel boring machine heading from Maple Leaf to Roosevelt

The second of two tunnel boring machines building the twin tunnels of the Northgate Link Extension is now heading south from the Maple Leaf Portal to the Roosevelt Station site. The TBM named “Pamela” launched on Thursday, Nov. 20 and crews expect it to arrive in Roosevelt by mid-2015.  The first TBM, “Brenda”, has progressed 3500 feet since its launch in mid-July.

Roadway restoration work under way at Roosevelt Station construction site

Road crews are busy repairing NE 65th Street and 12th Avenue NE. Crews must repair sidewalks, curbs, gutters and pavement after completing several utility relocation projects for the Roosevelt Station construction site. Much of the work will be completed this winter but the final layers of asphalt will be placed in spring 2015.

Sidewalk restoration work at NE 43rd Street and Brooklyn Avenue NE begins

Two sections of sidewalk on the south side of the U District Station construction site will also undergo a make-over after utility relocations. Starting as soon as Dec. 1, crews will begin restoration work along the eastern side of Brooklyn Avenue NE just south of NE 43rd Street and along the south side of NE 43rd Street between Brooklyn Avenue NE and the alley to the west of the “Ave.” Crews plan to wrap this work up in about three weeks depending on weather.

Having lights, appliances and music move to our whims in an automated fashion, having our doctors become far less error-prone and far more capable, our clothing more customized and better fitting, our energy bills lower, and having little flying robots that both serve and protect will be our future by 2025. The world will be more virtual and far more automated than it is today. [More...]

Apple's 'Get' Puts Paid to Free-App Sham
Apple has removed the word "free" from download buttons in its iOS and OS X app stores, replacing it with "get." European regulators recommended the action to Apple and Google earlier this year. Today's Story Highlights

EFF Spearheads Safer Web Initiative
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has announced a nonprofit
organization that will aim to secure the entire Web. Let's Encrypt,
starting in summer 2015, will offer free server certificates to help
websites transition from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS protocol. EFF is
partnering with Akamai, Mozilla, Cisco, iDenTrust and University of
Michigan researchers.

A View of the Future: Demo 2014
I attended Demo in Silicon Valley last week and, as always, it showcased
things likely to mature in the market 12 to 14 months into the future.
The presenters are small companies, hand-selected because they offer
something unique and forward-looking. This year there was a showcase of
products that could redefine home automation, drones, emergency rooms,
and even how you buy clothing.

Gadget Ogling: Dueling Tablets, a Smart Scale, and Slooow Games
Welcome to our weekly look at the latest, greatest, and poorest gadgets
to be revealed to the world. Hark as yours truly extols the virtues and
horrors of two wildly different tablets, a smart kitchen scale, and
video games requiring patience, among other objects. It's not like the
planet needs another well-known consumer gadget maker whipping up
Android tablets, and yet here we are.

Another Bleak Black Friday for Apple Fans
Apple is a company that bucks trends, that does things its own way, that
manages its business through highly tuned cycles. One thing Apple barely
does at all, though, is offer any sort of special deal or sale price.
Not even on Black Friday. Or Cyber Monday. Or just because. Heck, when
Apple celebrated 25 billion App Store downloads, it gave one person a
$10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

Cabinet Official Finally Free To Enrich Self With Book

Posted: 24 Nov 2014 02:28 PM PST

HuffPost Hill
Presidents will gladly give outgoing cabinet honchos a reference letter, but "senior administration officials" would likely do more harm than good. Conservative pundits are demonstrating that inappropriate comparisons to Jim Crow America are the surest way to go viral since cats first started wearing suits. And Ted Cruz thinks Joe Lieberman should replace Chuck Hagel, though Lieberman would probably scuttle his own nomination just to irk the president. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Monday, November 24th, 2014:

FERGUSON GRAND JURY DECISION IMMINENT - CNN: "After months of waiting, this question should be answered soon: Will Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson be indicted for killing teenager Michael Brown? State and federal sources told CNN the grand jury decision will be announced some time Monday. The prosecutor's office said that a decision has been reached, but news of what that is will come later in the day." [CNN]

HuffPost's Ferguson liveblog is here.

HAGEL OUT - Times: "Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel handed in his resignation under pressure on Monday, the first cabinet-level casualty of the collapse of President Obama's Democratic majority in the Senate and the struggles of his national security team to respond to an onslaught of global crises. In announcing Mr. Hagel's resignation from the State Dining Room on Monday, the president, flanked by Mr. Hagel and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., called Mr. Hagel critical to ushering the military 'through a significant period of transition' and lauded 'a young Army sergeant from Vietnam who rose to serve as America's 24th secretary of defense.' Administration officials said that Mr. Obama made the decision to remove Mr. Hagel, the sole Republican on his national security team, last Friday after a series of meetings between the two men over the past two weeks." [NYT]

BUT IS IT GOOD FOR THE CRUZ? @jmhattem: Ted Cruz says Joe Lieberman would be a "strong option" for next SecDef

Michele Flournoy is a likelier replacement.

Wai Hagel went bai: "Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is stepping down, after he and President Barack Obama concluded that his low-key style—despite his military experience in Vietnam—isn't well-suited for the expanding war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS). The sudden change at the top of the President's national-security team comes after the Administration seemed slow to react to ISIS's rise over the past year, and responded with what many inside the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill saw as a timid bombing campaign launched in August. Some Hagel allies were quick to defend him, saying he was doing the job the way the White House wanted him to do it. But others said his languid style—on display during his lackluster confirmation hearing in January 2013—left him vulnerable to criticism from those who want a more aggressive military strategy." [Time]

Helpful Matt Yglesias item on how much better conservatives would love our emperor president if he were an actual caudillo like Augusto Pinchet.

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Associated Press: "A Cleveland officer was less than 10 feet away when he fatally shot a 12-year-old boy carrying a pellet gun near a playground, and video of the shooting is clear about what happened, police said Monday." It's clear the shooting didn't need to happen, in other words. [AP]

Reminder that FDR once tried to ruin Thanksgiving and everyone hated him for it.

DAVE DOWNER - This says a lot about the power balance between labor and capital right now. "Camp Bow Wow is a doggy day care franchise. The company has more than 100 North American locations where pets board overnight, and it also offers in-home pet-sitting services. Camp Bow Wow workers look after dogs. But before they can do that, they apparently have to sign strict noncompete contracts similar to the ones used by Jimmy John's." [HuffPost's Dave Jamieson]

CONGRESS SUCKIER THAN USUAL - They really brought their pale, jowly, baggy-eyed game faces. Politico: "GOP leaders had a grand vision for the new Congress: Focus on a bold conservative agenda — not last year's business and the deadline-driven crises that have long dominated Washington. So much for that. Congress left for Thanksgiving without checking anything big off its to-do list during the lame duck, leaving just 10 days to fund the government when they come back in December and likely pushing big items like authorizing force against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants and the confirmation of an attorney general into 2015. As Republicans take the reins of both chambers of Congress for the first time in nearly a decade, their new agenda will be consumed with leftover business, a reality check for many in the party who had hoped to come out swinging in the new year on tax reform, trade deals, energy legislation and changes to Obamacare." [Politico]

RAND PAUL WANTS ISIS WAR DECLARATION - Jeremy Peters: "Senator Rand Paul is calling for a declaration of war against the Islamic State, a move that promises to shake up the debate over the military campaign in Iraq and Syria as President Obama prepares to ask Congress to grant him formal authority to use force." [NYT]

RON JOHNSON TAKES NOTE OF THE WACKY TABACKY - "Wait, have you been talking to my face for, like 17 hours?" added Johnson. Roll Call: "Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., likely the next chairman of the Senate committee with oversight over Washington, D.C., said Thursday that he would like to hold a hearing on marijuana legalization. When asked about his view of marijuana legalization in D.C., Johnson told a group of reporters, 'What we can do is we can hold hearings to find out how it's all working, to highlight the issues, highlight the problem, try and define the problems. So I think that's what we should really do.' ... 'I can't support it myself because I think it sets a really bad example for young children,' Johnson said. 'But states are doing that. Let the voters decide … Again, I like local control of those issues and then what we can do here in Congress is hold hearings, find out, how's it working? What kind of problems are there?' When it was pointed out the voters in D.C. did decide to legalize marijuana, Johnson said, 'Apparently,' and walked away." [Roll Call]

DEMS NARROWING LIST OF CONVENTION SITES - Bizarro Universe Vice President John Edwards is super bummed it won't be in Birmingham. "The Democratic National Committee says it has narrowed its list of potential locations for the 2016 Democratic convention to three finalists: New York, Philadelphia and Columbus, Ohio. The list eliminates two previous contenders -- Phoenix, Arizona and Birmingham, Alabama. 'We're thrilled to move to the next step of the selection process to determine where Democrats will come together to nominate the 45th President of the United States,' said DNC head Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a statement... The DNC also announced that it has narrowed the potential dates of its convention in 2016 to the weeks of July 18, July 25 and August 22." [NBC News]

MIKE HUCKABEE IS AWFUL - From MikeHuckabee.com: "Some are threatening violence if they don't get an indictment. I'm old enough to have seen this mob justice mindset before -- from lynch mobs who didn't like the legal process, so they took the law into their own hands."

BECAUSE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR - Here's a K9 snow maze

HAITIAN-AMERICANS NOT FEELING THE LOVE - We promise this will be the only Mia Love-related name pun you'll read here (save our suggestion for her Hispanic outreach initiative: "Mia's casa es su casa"). Diane Jeanty: "Mia Love was not what America's Haitian community expected for its first member of Congress. Love, a Mormon Republican from Utah, will be the GOP's first black female member in Congress when she comes to Washington in the new year. Despite the historic moment, many Haitian-Americans find themselves wrestling with whether to support Love because of their unease with her political views and her religion...The representative-to-be was also snubbed by a New York group called the Haitian Roundtable, which is committed to civil engagement and philanthropy in Haiti. The organization congratulated several Haitian-American politicians on their electoral victories via Twitter, but they were all Democrats. " [HuffPost]
