Trump Wants 20% Import Tax to Pay for Wall

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 01:15 PM PST

Despite long insisting that Mexico will pay for his promised U.S. border wall, President Donald Trump plans to fund the estimated $15-billion project by taxing U.S consumers. During a press gaggle on Thursday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the president has decided that the wall can be funded by a 20-percent tax on all Mexican imports to the United States. According to the pool report, "He did not give any details about that tax, how it would work, and he described it as a beginning of a process that would be part of overall tax reform." Such a tax would most affect the price of agricultural goods, as Mexico is the United States's second-largest supplier of such imports, mostly including fresh vegetables and fruits, wine and beer, snack foods, and other processed goods.

Border Patrol Chief Resigns
Border Patrol Chief Mark Morgan has resigned, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday. "On behalf of the men and women of U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Border Patrol, I want to thank Mark Morgan for his unwavering dedication to our border security mission, and recognize his life-long career in service to the nation," said Kevin K. McAleenan, the acting commissioner of CBP. Morgan's resignation comes as President Donald Trump is ordering the construction of a wall on the southern border between the U.S. and Mexico. Earlier Thursday, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto canceled a meeting with Trump that was scheduled for next Tuesday because of their dispute over the border wall.

Bannon to Media: Keep Your Mouth Shut
"The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for awhile," Steve Bannon, President Trump's chief White House Strategist, said during a telephone call with the New York Times on Thursday. "I want you to quote this," Mr. Bannon added. "The media here is the opposition party. They don't understand this country." Bannon, one of Trump's most trusted advisors, previously served as the executive chair at Breitbart News, a far-right outlet that has frequently featured alt-right, xenophobic, racist, conspiracy theory-heavy commentary. During their first week in the White House, President Trump, Bannon, and press secretary Sean Spicer have frequently expressed their views of the "dishonest media."

Kushner, Bannon Registered in 2 States
Top White House adviser and presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner is registered to vote in both New York and New Jersey, according to a report. Stephen Bannon, Trump's chief strategist, as well as President Trump's daughter Tiffany Trump also held registrations in two states. Accordinng to the Washington Post, Bannon tried unsuccessfully to remove himself from the voter rolls in Florida. Additionally, CNN reported that Trump's treasury secretary-designee Steve Mnuchin is also registered to vote in two states. As the Post mentions, it is neither illegal nor uncommon to hold dual voter registration, and does not mean that an individual is voting in both jurisdictions. The revelations come as Trump continues to push the unsubstantiated claim that "millions" of people voted illegally in the 2016 election—listing dual registration as among the voter-fraud schemes—thereby causing him to lose the popular vote to Hillary Clinton. Trump is believed to be signing an executive order later Thursday on an investigation into the alleged fraud.

Mexican President Cancels Trump Meeting
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Thursday morning that he will not attend a meeting at the White House scheduled for next Tuesday. Peña Nieto wrote on Twitter that he informed the White House of his decision this morning, which comes after he said his country will not pay for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico. On Twitter earlier Thursday morning, Trump threatened to cancel the meeting given Peña Nieto's refusal to fund the wall. Peña Nieto said his country "does not believe" in walls and "demands respect" from the new administration. Aboard Air Force One on Thursday, White House Press Secretary responded to the cancellation. "We will look for a date to schedule something in the future," he said. "We will keep the lines of communication open." Speaking at a GOP retreat in Philadelphia later in the afternoon, Trump said that he and Pena Nieto had "agreed" to cancel the meeting.

Elton Doing 'Devil Wears Prada' Musical
Sir Elton John and Paul Rudnick are writing a new Broadway musical inspired by The Devil Wears Prada, a best-selling early aughts book and eminently quotable movie starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. According to a press release, the musical will be given the same name and will be produced by Kevin McCollum, Fox Stage Productions, and Rocket Entertainment. "Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theater is super exciting. I'm a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world," John said in a statement. "I can't wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture."

7. TAXPAYERS' DIME
GOP: Wall Bill Will Cost Up to $15B
Republican leaders announced on Thursday that legislation to build a wall along the Mexican border will cost between $12 billion and $15 billion. It's not yet clear how the massively expensive project from the conservative party will be possible without adding to federal deficits. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could not answer that question when asked on Thursday. The wall has been one of President Trump's main goals since he entered the political arena. The wall, according to Trump, will be paid for by taxpayers until Mexico reimburses the U.S. for the project. Mexican leaders vocally oppose the wall and have repeatedly said they will not finance it.

Golfer Disputes Trump Voter-Fraud Story
German professional golfer Bernhard Langer on Thursday released a statement disputing the genesis of an anecdote about voter fraud President Donald Trump claimed to have received from the athlete. The New York Times reported on Wednesday that in a private meeting with congressional leaders, Trump claimed to have heard from Langer that, while waiting to vote, he saw people in line "who did not look as if they should allowed to vote," but did so nonetheless. Trump reportedly spouted off the names of several Latin American countries to theorize from where the alleged illegal voters originated. "Unfortunately, the report in the New York Times and other news outlets was a mischaracterization by the media," Langer said in a statement to the Golf Channel. "The voting situation reported was not conveyed from me to President Trump, but rather was told to me by a friend. I then relayed the story in conversation with another friend, who shared it with a person with ties to the White House," he continued, recalling what was essentially a game of telephone. "From there, this was misconstrued," he added, noting that, despite Trump claiming it was Langer who witnessed the election day activities, "I am not a citizen of the United States, and cannot vote."

9. STANDING UP
GOP Leaders Rebuke Trump on Torture
The Republican Party's two top Congressional leaders delivered a rebuke to President Donald Trump on the issue of torture, sending a clear message that it's not something they want to revisit.   "Torture is illegal," House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday at the Republican lawmaker retreat in Philadelphia. "And we agree with it not being legal."  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell added that the issue had already been debated by Congress, and that his colleagues were satisfied with the status quo. A law was passed in 2015 that outlaws the use or threat of force in American interrogation of detainees.   "The director of the CIA has made it clear that he's going to follow the law. I believe virtually all of members are comfortable with the state of the law," McConnell said.  The White House brought the issue back to the forefront after a draft presidential order leaked. The document proposed to reopen overseas CIA black sites to interrogate suspected terrorists, and to review more aggressive interrogation techniques, referred to during the Bush administration as "enhanced interrogation techniques."  Against all evidence, Trump claimed Wednesday that experts had told him that torture was an effective way of questioning detainees. He did not name those experts.  —Tim Mak

Ben's Chili Bowl Removes Cosby Mural
Ben's Chili Bowl has reportedly removed a controversial mural that featured accused sexual predator and comedian Bill Cosby from the side of its building. The landmark Washington, D.C. restaurant painted over the artwork with a white wall. In its place, signs read "New Year, New Mural." The mural had also featured Barack Obama, Donnie Simpson, and Chuck Brown. W. Ellington Felton, an artist who helped clear the painting, said the restaurant removed it because Obama's term ended and because "it's the end of an era." The restaurant "wanted it to be clear that this was our decision" and painted over the mural in the middle of the night.

It's 30 seconds closer to the end of the world, says the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. For the first time since 2015, the fateful minute-hand moved a little nearer to midnight on this symbolic measure of the apocalypse. The group's reasons for adjusting the Doomsday Clock have been the same for awhile: threat of nuclear destruction and climate change. But the main reason we're now 150 seconds away from cataclysm instead of a more comfortable 180 seconds, the scientists say, is the new occupant of the White House.—David E. Rovella

You Can't Fire Me. I Quit
An increasingly hostile war of words between Trump and Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto ended in the latter scratching the meeting entirely. (Pena Nieto expressed reservations about meeting with the new U.S. president given his plans for a border wall; Trump responded testily via Twitter.) The conflict adds to tensions in the U.S.-Mexico relationship and becomes the first major foreign policy dustup for Trump since he took office on Jan. 20.
Here are today's top stories...

Global warming and 15,000 warheads make for dangerous days. It's impossible to truly measure the risk, or timing, of a full-scale nuclear war or climate change-driven calamity, but the scientific community takes a moment every year to remind us exactly how much trouble we're in, via the Doomsday Clock. This year, Donald Trump is being blamed for pushing us closer to the apocalypse.

The special relationship has a new couple. U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is paying a visit to Trump this week, providing him his first chance at in-person diplomacy, albeit with one of America's closest allies. As the U.S. begins to extract itself from foreign entanglements like the TPP and Nafta, and Britain heads for the Brexit door, the two leaders are fashioning a U.S.-U.K. trade deal.

More bad news for George Soros. The liberal 86-year-old investor just can't catch a break. First he loses $1 billion by betting against the market after Trump's victory. Now, Dutch regulators mistakenly disclosed some of his short positions. While the regulator publishes shorts of 0.5 percent or higher, the smaller amounts were posted by mistake.

China is getting old. Fast. The world's most populous country is turning gray. About 25 percent of China's population will be 60 or older by 2030, its government said. That's up from 13 percent seven years ago. This has big implications for China's economic growth, which could be undermined as the labor force declines and expenditures for insurance and health care rise.

In Elon we trust? The master of Tesla and SpaceX has a reputation for being way ahead of the curve in almost everything he does. So it shouldn't have come as a surprise when he started appearing at Trump's Fifth Avenue building, and now the White House. Some of his green-leaning fans were aghast, but there seems to be a strategy at work here: Musk is pushing for a carbon tax, an idea supported by Trump's pick for secretary of state, former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson.

Zero-to-Six Million
Cars lend themselves particularly well to Instagram, and the luxury brands have figured this out. They've accumulated vast numbers of followers using tremendous, combustion-driven eye candy. Porsche's account, for example, racked up more than 6 million followers by posting images of its cars driving on ice, on racetracks, and near beaches. Lamborghini has 6 million as well, while Mercedes-Benz has more than 8 million, Audi almost 7 million, and BMW more than 10 million.

Google Gets Rid of 1.7 Billion Bad Ads
Google removed 1.7 billion bad advertisements from its various sites in
2016, more than double the prior year's totals. Google took several
steps to crack down on the deceptive advertising, including updating its
policies to protect users from "misleading and predatory offers." It
also beefed up its technology to help identify misleading ads and remove
them.

New FCC Chair Ajit Pai Vows to Kill Net Neutrality Rules
President Donald Trump on Monday named Ajit Pai chairman of the FCC.
Pai, who has been a Republican commissioner for the agency since 2012,
replaced Tom Wheeler, whom President Obama appointed to the top post in
late 2013. With the new administration, Republicans gain the expected
majority of the commission. Pai has been known to be a foe of former
President Barack Obama's Net neutrality rules.

Barra Leaves Post as Xiaomi's International Point Man
Almost four years after being poached from a critical post at Google to
join Chinese upstart Xiaomi, Hugo Barra on Monday announced he will
return to Silicon Valley in February. Barra, who led the Xiaomi's
overseas expansion as vice president, international, explained the move
largely as a desire to reconnect with his family and restore a sense of
normalcy to his life.

The Old Man and the Tsunami: A Security Story
There's a folk-story that all Japanese schoolchildren learn about an old
man who lives in a village by the sea. One day, an earthquake hits. He's
the only person in the village to realize that a tsunami will soon
follow. He hurries to the nearby mountainside where the rice for the
village is grown and sets the entire harvest aflame. All of the
villagers race to the mountainside to deal with the conflagration --
their rice is their most precious resource.

Oracle's Important Little Acquisition
Oracle last week announced the acquisition of Apiary, a small company
that tucks into its product line and will not make much of a splash in
the financial pages or possibly even in tech circles. Nonetheless, it's
important strategic news. The value of the deal wasn't publicized -- but
given the parameters, the dollars will get lost in the rounding of
Oracle's overall revenue and profit numbers.

Samsung's Note7 Post Mortem Turns Up 2 Problems
Samsung is set to release the results of its Galaxy Note7 investigation
on Monday, explaining the underlying causes of the problems that led to
the phone's demise. The three independent quality control and supply
chain analysis firms Samsung engaged to conduct the investigation
concluded that the Note7 was affected by two separate issues. One was a
battery issue; the other was the rush to market.

Customizing a Computer? Here's What You Need
There are plenty of reasons to build a custom computer. While custom
computers may initially be more expensive than prepackaged desktops or
laptops, they can provide you with nearly endless possibilities, whether
you're looking for a top-notch gaming machine, a system for mixing
music, or the ideal choice for developing Web applications. Custom is
the way to go for performance and flexibility.

China Aims to Wash VPNs Out of Its Hair
China this week announced new measures to further restrict its citizens'
access to the Internet. The 14-month campaign appears designed to crack
down on the use of Web platforms and services unapproved by the
government, and on virtual private networks, which can used to access
those platforms and services covertly. There is an urgent need for
regulation, according to the government.

Asus Tinker Board Joins Raspberry Pi on the Bargain Table
Just when you thought Raspberry Pi couldn't be knocked from its market-
leading perch, along comes Asus with a rival device that may give the Pi
a run for its relatively little money. Asus just launched its own low-
cost computer, the Tinker Board, which is being sold in the UK and
Europe for about $57. Its features could interest open source
enthusiasts in doing a little comparison shopping.

Samsung Explains Note7 Failure, Promises to Do Better
Samsung has announced new quality assurance protocols to ensure that it
won't have a repeat of the catastrophic issues that plagued its Galaxy
Note7 handsets. The company last fall issued a universal recall after
several of the devices caught fire or exploded. In one incident, an
aircraft had to be evacuated after a Samsung Galaxy Note7 caught fire
and produced thick smoke.

The US Press Corps vs. Trump: A Teachable Moment
Life is about negotiation. We negotiate our relationships -- including
marriage, which is a contract that many don't take seriously. We
negotiate our jobs, and we negotiate our interactions with our families.
Those who are good at this tend to have relatively happy lives. While
they don't get everything they might want, they get more than most. When
things degrade into wars, both sides lose.
