Companies

Barry Ritholtz: "What we know about the minimum wage is that modest increases have a negligible effect on employment, and usually work as a net economic positive to the region that passes them. ... So why all the hand-wringing by the business community? In short, raising the minimum wage is a wealth transfer." Read more...

National

The Editors: "The police protect the public. The military protects the republic. In an age of terrorism, their jobs necessarily overlap, especially in large cities. But some lines between police officers and soldiers ought to remain distinct, and President Barack Obama took an essential step this week toward reining in the counterproductive militarization of police departments that has occurred since the attacks of Sept. 11." Read more...

Declassified

Eli Lake: "After resisting efforts from some in his own party and the House of Representatives to revoke the NSA's authority to collect telephone records in bulk, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday he will allow a vote this week on the USA Freedom Act. That bill would end the NSA's bulk collection of telephone metadata, but allow the NSA and FBI to query this data stored by the phone companies." Read more...

Josh Rogin: "The Obama administration is considering a range of options to respond to Russia's ongoing violation of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty. Part of the response could involve deploying new U.S. weapons to Eastern Europe." Read more...

Middle East

Noah Feldman: "If Islamic State is to be defeated, there must be effective ground troops. Right now, the only effective ground troops outside of Iraqi Kurdistan seem to be Shiite militias with close ties to Iran. So the coalition has to choose between two evils. Is it better to fight Islamic State effectively while facilitating Iranian domination of Iraq? Or to let the insurgent group take and hold territory while hoping for improved performance from the Iraqi security forces?" Read more...

Tech

Leonid Bershidsky: "When the French billionaire Xavier Niel tried to bid for T-Mobile US, he was quickly sent packing. It will be harder to get rid of Patrick Drahi, another French billionaire who is entering the U.S. market with a $9.1 billion deal to take control of a relatively small cable company, Suddenlink Communications. One way or another, the U.S. will get a taste of the progressive business models that are being tested in France." Read more...

Investing

Mark Gilbert: "On Monday evening, European Central Bank board member Benoit Coeure told a closed-door reception for hedge-fund traders, economists and fellow central bankers that the bank would probably accelerate bond-buying this month and next, ahead of an anticipated summer lull. Everyone else learned about the plan on Tuesday morning, an appalling breach of the rules concerning selective disclosure. What we don't yet know is which other central bankers at the event might have spilled illicit beans." Read more...

THE REAL DEAL
Everybody wondered whether Clinton would sense the shifting political winds blowing from the left. The early evidence is pretty clear.
Hearts and Minds
The governor seems like a perfect darling of social conservatives, but at a closed-door meeting Tuesday, he was forced to defend past comments on marriage, abortion, and LGBT rights.
'Gotcha Journalism'
Should America have invaded Iraq? Most would say the question tripping up 2016 hopefuls Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio is worth asking—but not the neoconservatives who pushed for the war.
Roe V. Wade
Texas legislators want to make the state's parental consent laws on abortion—mandated by George W. Bush—even more restrictive.
CAN'T HIDE FOREVER
Clinton was forced to confront, again, the issues surrounding her private emails and secret correspondences with an ex-staffer.

Fukushima nuclear plant ordered to upgrade its computers from Windows XP
Well, this is scary. The Japan Times reports that the Tokyo Electric Power Co., a.k.a. Tepco, has come under fire from an independent auditor for trying to save money by delaying its computers’ upgrade from Windows XP. Among other things, Tepco has been using Windows XP to run computers at the Fukushima nuclear power plant that suffered a terrifying triple meltdown back in 2011.

Netflix is testing a redesign that users are going to love – see it first right here
Netflix is nothing short of a game-changer when it comes to home entertainment. It certainly wasn’t the first service to begin streaming movies and TV shows to our homes, but there’s no question that Netflix led the charge, and continues to lead the charge, in terms of popularizing home streaming and changing the way we consume movies and TV series. Of course, that hardly means the service is perfect. In fact, there are some things that are flat-out annoying about Netflix. Subscribers will be excited to learn that there are some changes brewing on the company’s website though, and we now have our first look at the upcoming redesign.

The latest Google Maps catastrophe is directing racists to the White House
Google can’t win for losing. Just days after the search giant was forced to temporarily shut down its Map Maker tool in light of a rash of vandalism, The Washington Post discovered a far more disturbing trend. Specific search phrases on Google Maps containing the word “n****r” (yes, the heinous racial epithet) will redirect users to the White House, where president Barack Obama currently resides.

LG's incredible new HDTV prototype is as thin as paper
Just when you thought that TVs couldn’t possibly get any thinner, LG has gone and upped the ante with an incredible 55-inch OLED wallpaper display that measures in at less than a millimeter and weighs just barely over four pounds. While the display itself is more of a proof of concept device than something you can pick up at your local Best Buy today, the display may very well be a glimpse into how many of us will watch TV in the (distant) future.

Microsoft's brand new iPhone app might change how you use email and chat
Microsoft is still struggling in the smartphone business, where it's a distant third player, well behind Google and Apple when it comes to market share. But the company is certainly doing a lot better when it comes to smartphone applications, as Microsoft has some very popular mobile apps available on both iPhone and Android. And the company is reportedly going to launch a new iPhone app soon called Flow that might change the way you email and text.

If you haven’t yet watched the brilliance that is HBO’s Silicon Valley, do yourself a favor and start tuning in. While the show is funny in its own right, it’s especially funny for anyone with even a passing interest in tech culture. It looks like Google+ wasn't a total waste after all
You’d be hard-pressed to find a Google+ user with any affinity for the service, but that’s not to say there aren’t elements of the social network experiment worth saving. Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge shipments top 10 million, but should Samsung still worry?
With profits from Samsung’s division on the decline, the recent release of the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge could not have come at a better time. According to The Korea Herald, shipments of Samsung’s new flagship devices have already passed the 10 million mark, not too bad given that they’ve barely been on the market for a little over a month. Both the S6 and the S6 Edge hit store shelves on April 10. Incidentally, the Herald’s source reportedly comes from a high-ranking Samsung official.
