I don't deserve praise

Just Because I Get Up In The Night Doesn't Mean I Deserve Praise

By Clint Edwards

baby

I was chatting with my wife about the long night we'd had getting up with the baby, when I said, "At least I get up with her. A lot of men don't. You should be grateful."

I was tired. And I said it like she was really lucky to have me. Like I was going above and beyond as a father.

It was just after 7 a.m. Mel paused for a moment, leaned back in the chair, Aspen sleeping in her lap. Her eyes were a little red, and her brown hair was in a loose ponytail. She held the baby a little closer, and took in what I had said. I expected her to agree with me. We sometimes talked about the fathers we knew who didn't get up with their babies. They viewed it as the mother's job.

But she didn't.

It's A Great Time To Be Graduating From A Mainline, Progressive, Christian, Divinity School

In his commencement address for the graduating class at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Huffington Post Religion's executive editor Paul Raushenbush said he was troubled by the Pew Research Center's Religious Landscape Study -- but not because there aren't as many Christians in America as there used to be.

"It disturbs me because so many people have been hurt by a horrible lie about who Jesus is, and what his church is about." Read more.

Death Penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev: A Call for Radical Mercy

It's hard to have mercy for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. It was Jesus who said, "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." HUFFPOST HILL - Team Clinton Lifts Moratorium On Candidate Providing Canned Answers To Predictable Questions

Posted: 19 May 2015 02:33 PM PDT

HuffPost Hill
David Brooks called mistakes leading up to the Iraq war “data points in a larger education,” which is, oddly enough, what William Randolph Hearst said about the Spanish-American War. President Obama has long espoused a Kenyan anti-colonial philosophy, so why is he so upset about colony collapse disorder? And Claire McCaskill tweeted her displeasure with “Game of Thrones,” much like that time when Louie Gohmert bemoaned "Mad Men" losing its slow-boiling ennui and transcendent meditations on materialism and intimacy. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Tuesday, May 19th, 2015:

MCCONNELL PLANS VOTE ON HOUSE PATRIOT ACT BILL - Plus a voice vote on S.RES.211 "I Miss You, Jim Bunning, I Miss You So Very Much." Burgess Everett: "Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday he will allow a vote on the House’s surveillance reform bill this week, even though it may not be able to pass the Senate. McConnell told reporters on Tuesday that the Senate needs to see “where the votes are” to keep in place expiring PATRIOT Act provisions. McConnell favors a straight extensions of current law. A bill he has introduced would keep in place bulk data collection programs, which were exposed by Edward Snowden. But the popular House-passed bill would eliminate it." [Politico]

BOEHNER WANTS OBAMA TO 'START OVER' ON WAR AUTHORIZATION - Because Congress is hard. Jen Bendery: "House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) hasn't taken any action to authorize the ongoing war against Islamic State militants. But on Tuesday, he criticized President Barack Obama's proposal for authorizing the military campaign, and said Obama should just withdraw it. 'The president's request for an Authorization of Use of Military Force calls for less authority than he has today. I just think, given the fight that we're in, it's irresponsible,' Boehner told reporters. 'This is why the president, frankly, should withdraw the Authorization of Use of Military Force and start over.' It's been nine months since the U.S. began bombing the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, without new congressional authorization. The Constitution requires Congress to declare wars, but in this case, Obama has said he doesn't need lawmakers' sign-off because a sweeping 2001 AUMF covers his actions." [HuffPost]

HILLARY DOES THING! - Congrats, Sidney Blumenthal! You're a Hillary "friend!" ...for "a long time!" That's gotta be worth at least a few mil in net worth! Boomshakalaka! Igor Bobic: "Hillary Clinton on Tuesday called for the immediate release of email correspondence sent during her tenure as secretary of state, saying that the email records are 'not mine, they're the State Department's.' 'Nobody has a bigger interest in getting them released than I do,' the presidential contender told reporters during a campaign event in Iowa. She urged State Department officials to 'please move as quickly as they possibly can to get them out.' … Clinton also brushed off concerns raised in The New York Times about her correspondence with Sidney Blumenthal, a longtime friend. The two were in communication about Libya while Clinton was at the State Department. 'He's been a friend of mine for a long time,' Clinton told reporters Tuesday. 'I'm going to keep talking to my old friends, whoever they are.'" '[HuffPost]

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - A faction of Republicans in the House of Representatives wants to stop poor people from buying junk food with food stamps. Under proposed new legislation, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program's 45 million enrollees would only be able to use their benefits for lean meat, poultry and food products approved under a separate federal nutrition program that supports nutrition for pregnant women, infants and children. Energy drinks out would be out; Enfamil in. "Over the years, the nutrition portion of food stamps has become obsolete," Rep. Tom Rice (R-S.C.), who authored the legislation, said in a statement. "Today, beneficiaries can use taxpayer dollars to purchase nearly anything in the grocery store. Meanwhile, families barely living over the poverty threshold are pinching pennies and clipping coupons to make ends meet." [HuffPost]

HEDGE FUND MANAGERS SAVED FROM PENURY FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE OF YEARS - No child should have to suffer through their father coming home from his job in Stamford in an Acura wearing a suit from *gulp* Macy's. We can't let the innocent suffer. Richard Rubin: "'Any major changes to private equity’s most favored tax break won’t happen until 2017,' House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan said. Ryan said he’s excluding the taxation of carried interest from this year’s bipartisan attempt to revamp business taxes, sparing fund managers from any change. 'That is on the individual side of the code, so it’s not something that we’re looking at right now,' Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, said at an accounting conference in Washington Tuesday...Obama wants to tax the carried interest of private-equity managers, venture capitalists, some hedge fund executives and real estate managers as ordinary income instead of capital gains. That proposal would raise $17.7 billion over a decade, according to the Treasury Department. Carried interest is the profits interest that private-equity managers receive in the companies they take over and manage." [Bloomberg]

BEADS??? - Trust us, you don't even want to know how this one factors into the planned invasion of Texas. Tennille Tracy: "The White House is backing efforts to scrutinize the link between pesticides and a dramatic increase in honeybee deaths. In a report Tuesday, a White House task force said it wanted to see the number of honeybee deaths drop to 15% during the cold winter months when bees are particularly vulnerable. The task force laid out a multipronged strategy to research the problem and to improve and expand honeybee habitats. Winter loss rates are well above the task force’s stated goal, reaching 23% in the most recent winter. The annual loss rate, meanwhile, reached 42% for the 12-month-period ending in April, the U.S. Agriculture Department said earlier this month. Among the many causes scientists are researching is the role played by pesticides, and particularly a class known as neonicotinoids, which are often applied to crops. Pesticides are absorbed by plant tissues and then transferred to pollen and nectar. Bees, used to pollinate many different types of crops in the U.S., exhibit a wide range of sensitivities to the neonicotinoids, the report said." [WSJ]

No one tell them about the Agenda 21 special forces amassing off the coast of Florida: "It didn't take long for a conservative blog to connect the U.S. military's upcoming 'Jade Helm 15' training exercise to President Barack Obama's order Monday that banned certain military-grade equipment from being given to local law enforcement agencies. Michele Hickford, the editor-in-chief of former Rep. Allen West's (R-FL) website, noted the timing of the President's order and the military exercise, which some people believe is a cover for the implementation of martial law, in a blog post published Monday." [TPM's Catherine Thompson]

STENY HOYER SUPPORTS STENY HOYER BEING ELECTED DEMOCRATIC LEADER - He also supports that donation his leadership PAC just made to your reelection campaign. *wink* Bridget Bowman: "House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., agreed Tuesday morning that congressional salaries should increase. Rep. Alcee L. Hastings, D-Fla., made the case for a lawmaker pay raise during a Rules Committee meeting Monday night, arguing that the high cost of living in the District of Columbia will lead to a situation where only wealthy people can afford to serve in Congress. 'I agree with Mr. Hastings,' Hoyer said in his weekly pen-and-pad briefing with reporters Tuesday morning. He echoed Hastings’ argument, noting that the current salary “dictates the only people who can serve are the rich. I don’t think that’s what the Founding Fathers had in mind.' … Members of Congress earn an average annual salary of $174,000. In April 2014, then-Rep. James P. Moran made headlines by making a similar argument for a pay raise." [Roll Call]

ALAN GRAYSON IS ONE CLASSY GUY - No word on when he and Scott DesJarlais will form the "Women! Am I right?" Caucus, but we suspect it will be soon. Jesse Byrnes: "The saga between Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) and his estranged wife took another turn after an agreement on terms for their divorce fell apart. 'I'll sum it up for you: Gold diggers gotta dig. That's all I gotta say,' he told local ABC affiliate WFTV on Monday after leaving the courtroom, accusing Lolita Grayson of reneging on an agreement. His estranged wife of 25 years, Lolita, filed for divorce early last year. The House member and former telecom company co-founder has sought an annulment on the basis of bigamy, and they appeared to reach terms last month on an annulment, which would not require equal division of $30 million in assets." [The Hill]

DAVID BROOKS CHAMPIONED AN AVOIDABLE WAR THAT LEFT 200,000 PEOPLE DEAD, BUT IT'S COOL BECAUSE HE NOW HAS A SERENE UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN FALLIBILITY AND A BOOK ABOUT MORALITY THAT YOU SHOULD BUY AND PONDER WHILE ON THE ACELA - In terms of an Iraq war booster shamelessly fusing his record with a book promotion, this is almost as bad as "Big Russ and Me: Why My Dad Didn't Mind My Softball Interview With Dick Cheney." Brooks: "The Iraq war error reminds us of the need for epistemological modesty. We don’t know much about the world, and much of our information is wrong. A successful president has to make decisions while radiating hesitancy, staying open-minded in the face of new evidence, not falling into the traps that afflict those who possess excessive self-confidence....These are all data points in a larger education." [Times]

Mikey loves it, naturally: "PLAYBOOK FACTS OF LIFE: Presidential candidates talking about Iraq, rather than parsing the question, might want to take a page from Brooks and focus their answers on: 'Here’s what we learned ... '" [Politico]

Chait summarizes the problem underlying the whole debate: "This is how the dodge works. Step 1: Prevent a Senate report from looking into whether the administration lied. Step 2: Ignore the existence of the report that did show the administration lied. Step 3: Pretend that an intelligence failure and a deliberate effort to cook the intelligence are mutually exclusive. It was a mistake, therefore it could not have also been a crime." [NY Mag]

BECAUSE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR - Here's a baby panda.

CLAIRE MCCASKILL DONE WITH 'GAME OF THRONES' - "Claire McCaskill says she wants to keep America safe, but if she can't predict that there will be gratuitous rape scenes in 'Game of Thrones,' how can she predict when Iran will get the bomb?" Igor Bobic: "The Missouri Democrat, who often personally opines on newsy topics via her Twitter account, on Tuesday sounded off against a particularly brutal scene in the latest episode of "Game of Thrones," HBO's TV adaptation of the fantasy book series 'A Song of Ice and Fire.' 'Ok, I'm done Game of Thrones.Water Garden, stupid.Gratuitous rape scene disgusting and unacceptable. It was a rocky ride that just ended,' [she tweeted]. Fans of the series erupted in outrage on Sunday after young Sansa Stark, one of the show's few remaining beloved protagonists, was raped by her new husband, Ramsay Bolton, a psychopath who has an affinity for skinning people alive. The 'Black Wedding,' as it is being called by fans online, never occurred in the books -- Sansa's friend is subjected to Ramsay's torment instead." [HuffPost]

Editor's Pick: 5 IT Security Implementation Myths

Chris Doggett

Leaving an organization even momentarily exposed opens up the possibility of a cyberattack that could wield a crippling blow. The mistake some people make is that they believe such an opening is inevitable when switching technologies. Instead, they should realize that the exposure comes not at a mythical moment during cutover, but every single day that they have a sub-par technology in place. [More...]

Today's Story Highlights

5 IT Security Implementation Myths
There's a common perception that implementing comprehensive IT security
to protect against today's sophisticated threats and attacks is a
difficult and expensive task, and that the benefits of replacing current
solutions (even if highly ineffective) are seldom worthwhile. This
mindset has resulted in many businesses dealing with a virtual patchwork
of disparate systems.

Walmart Banks on Shaking Up E-Commerce
Walmart will be releasing its earnings report on Tuesday, and analysts
are expecting hear a lot about the role of e-commerce in the current
quarter, as well as an important factor in the company's growth
strategy. One of things it's planning to do is to take on Amazon Prime.
Walmart last week confirmed that it will roll out its own subscription
shipping service, reportedly code-named "Tahoe," this summer.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/82066.html

If You Build a Structure, Sales Enablement Will Come
There's a lot of devalued sales jargon out there, but the phrase that
makes me wince the most is "sales enablement." First, it's misleading --
there are lots of things that equip sales people to close deals, but
when people say "sales enablement" they usually mean content, portals,
playbooks and on-boarding. That only "enables" part of the sale. Second,
most companies are abysmal at managing it.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/82068.html

Fresh Takes on Shipping Perishable Online Purchases
It's one thing to ship books and electronics across the U.S. -- but it's
quite another to get fresh fruit, baked goods, meat, fish, prepared
meals, raw meal ingredients, and other perishables to consumers' front
doors in prime condition. Once perishables are delivered to a customer's
door, they often have to sit there for an unpredictable amount of time
before the customer gets home.

Today's Story Highlights

Researcher's Airplane-Hacking Claims May Not Fly
A security researcher who last month bragged he'd hacked into a
passenger jet's internal computer systems while in flight appears to
have performed the act more than a dozen times over a three-year period.
Chris Roberts, founder and CTO of One World Labs, told FBI investigators
earlier this year that he'd hacked into the flight systems of commercial
passenger aircraft from 15-20 times.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/82071.html

NASA's $2.25M Challenge: 3D-Print a Space Base
NASA and America Makes have challenged innovators in the additive
construction market to design a habitat for deep space exploration for
the first stage of the competition and to fabricate such facilities in
the second phase. The organizations will award a $50,000 prize and a
pair of $1.1 million purses for the winners of the multistage challenge.
Registration opened for phase one on Saturday.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/82070.html

Makulu Gives Unity a Good Name
Makulu Linux now is one of the first major distros to integrate the
Unity desktop. It was more than worth the wait! The Unity desktop is
Ubuntu's flagship desktop environment. Canonical pushed through its
development several years ago as a way of introducing users to its
"unifying" computing platform for all devices. It removed the
traditional panel bar and two-column application menu.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/82067.html

Will Apple TV Be Busting Out All Over?
I want to believe that Apple will launch a new Apple TV hardware device
in June at its Worldwide Developers Conference -- but holy macaroni,
it's been more than three years since Apple introduced the third-
generation Apple TV. Of course, Apple made a barely noticeable hardware
tweak more than two years ago, but I'm begging for an Apple TV that's
far more than just a utilitarian tool.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/82069.html

The Future According to Qualcomm
I was at the Qualcomm Internet of Things event in San Francisco last
week during what was a major IoT event in the city. What is kind of
amazing is the larger event was just a small part of the applications
show that used to go on at the same time. This year it is twice the size
of that older show. Companies are flocking to this IoT concept like
ducks to water.

3 Waco Bikers Mistakenly Let Out of Jail
Three of the 170 bikers arrested in Waco, Texas were mistakenly released on a lower bond, according to McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara. Juan Garcia, Drew King, and James Harris got away after paying $50,000 bond rather than the $1 million ordered for all the suspects. Police are currently searching for the bikers, one of whom escaped with body armor under his vest, and say they plan to rearrest and hold them on higher bail.

2. CARRY THAT WEIGHT
Rape Accuser Graduates With Mattress
Sulkowicz alleges that she was sexually assaulted by another Columbia student in August 2012, during her sophomore year. She filed a complaint against her alleged attacker in April 2013, and he was found "not responsible" by the university that October. She followed up with a complaint to the New York Police Department in the spring of 2014 (police did not pursue charges against the student), and a Title IX complaint against the university that spring. For her senior thesis in visual arts, Sulkowicz chose to carry around a mattress just like the one she says she was raped on for a piece called Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight). According to the rules of the pieces, she had to carry it whenever she was on university property, though she was allowed to accept help offered in carrying it. Sulkowicz also said she will keep carrying it until her alleged attacker is expelled.

34M Cars Recalled for Killer Air Bags
Japanese air-bag manufacturer Takata doubled the number of U.S. cars that are subject to its recall on Tuesday, with the devices in 33.8 million U.S. vehicles declared defective. the rupture-prone air bags have been linked to at least six deaths and dozens of injuries, and led to a months-long recall push by the National Highway Safety Administration. Takata's announcement will rank among the largest automotive recalls ever, with repairs taking place in phases. Areas with high humidity have been linked to the most severe air bag issues. The recall is believed to be the largest of any consumer product in U.S. history, surpassing the 31 million bottles of Tylenol recalled in 1982 over posion fears.

4. BREAKING RANKS
Top Dem: Obama's ISIS Strategy Is Broken
A senior congressional Democrat said Tuesday that he's concerned the Obama administration's strategy for defeating ISIS is heading in the wrong direction. "Alarm bells should be going off," Rep. Adam Schiff told reporters during a question and answer session in Washington, calling ISIS's capture of Ramadi "a very serious and significant setback" in U.S.-led efforts to defeat the group in Iraq and Syria. Administration officials have said in recent days that their efforts to defeat ISIS are succeeding and have sought to portray the group as back on its heels, a characterization that Schiff rejected. He said the U.S. lost time trying to help Sunnis get integrated into the Iraqi military, which the U.S. wants to lead the boots-on-the-ground fight against ISIS. Schiff also said the ground offensive had become too dependent on Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and that speeding up the inclusion of Sunnis into Iraqi forces would help the Iraqi military stand on its own. Schiff said that he didn't think the U.S. was "losing the war" against ISIS, "but we're not making tremendous progress, either."— Shane Harris

The New England Patriots will accept the National Football League's punishment over Deflategate penalties without an appeal, according to the team's owner, Robert Kraft. Kraft said the team would "accept reluctantly what [Commissioner Roger Goodell] has given us. Consequences include a $1 million fine and the loss of two draft picks, one next year and the other in 2017. Quarterback Tom Brady has already been suspended for four games for his role in the scandal and said previously that he plans to appeal.

Feds: $187M in Cancer Charity Pocketed
Four cancer charities ran a massive scam for decades that saw $187 million in donations funneled into the pockets of its leaders and virtually nothing given to charity, the Federal Trade Commission alleged Tuesday. Investigators said the Cancer Fund of America, Cancer Support Services, Children's Cancer Fund of America, and the Breast Cancer Society were all linked to one director, James Reynolds Sr.; donors were told that money raised would pay to transport people to chemotherapy and buy pain medication. "These were lies," the FTC said in its complaint, which was joined by all 50 states. "Donations have enriched a small group of individuals." Prosecutors says Reynolds was joined in the scam by his son, friends, and church members—all while spending less than 3 percent of donations on cancer-related causes. Experts say this may be one of the largest charity fraud cases ever.

Air Force Gives Drone Pilots a Break
The U.S. Air Force began reducing the number of unmanned air patrols it flies, in an effort to give its overworked drone pilots a break. The reduction from 65 combat air patrols to 60, as of April 1, is meant to ready the workforce for the next decade of warfare, officials say. Each combat air patrol is a complicated structure, requiring four aircraft, pilots, antennas, intelligence officials, and the like.

It's Not Just War Reporters

THE NUTGRAF

When one thinks about journalists and mental stress, it is typically reporters working in conflict zones who come to mind. Indeed, according to a 2002 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, nearly one-third of war journalists will suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder during their careers -- that's about six times the rate of PTSD in other professions. But an emerging body of research suggests that journalists who are exposed to trauma secondhand -- the people whose job it is to sort through images, watch videos and decide what should and should not be published -- are at the same, if not greater, risk of developing psychological symptoms as war reporters on the ground. Fortunately, newsrooms are wising up to the needs of their employees, and making mental well-being a priority.
