5 truths of new motherhood

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 07:15 PM PST

You've said good night to the Moon and the Gorilla, successfully counted One or Two Red or Blue Fish, and finally tucked Junie B. Jones back on the shelf. Congrats! Now, it's time for your Bedtime Story -- one can't-miss article to soothe your frazzled parent brain at the end of the day. Happy reading, and we'll see you tomorrow.

5 Universal Truths Of New Motherhood

By Liz Curtis Faria

liz curtis faria

Motherhood is a unique journey for each of us. And by "unique," I mean pretty much exactly the same for everyone. This explains the otherwise unfathomable popularity of baby forums, where 8,000 women can log on and ask a variation of the question, "Why is my baby trying to ruin my life by never sleeping for more than 25 consecutive minutes?" and that question will yield 16,000 responses, because each member will want to weigh in at least twice for the sake of camaraderie. This is because it is a universal truth of new motherhood that sleep deprivation will make you want to knock yourself unconscious (banging your head against the wall works well for this) so you can get some blessed down time.

I was recently talking to a friend of mine who is also a new mom, and she, with no small degree of incredulity, said, "You know, all those things people tell you about being a new mom are actually true!" Those things that you heard and quickly dismissed as being not-applicable to yourself and your unborn child. Once the baby arrives, you're all, "That wasn't exaggerated?! What in the!?!? Did everyone know this?!? And if so, why are there so many new children in the world?"

While of course your individual experiences will vary somewhat (i.e., your baby's sh*t might get on your pants or it might get on your shirt), the common denominator of sh*t cannot be avoided. The thing is, there are some universal truths to new parenthood, and it's in everyone's best interest to get comfortable with this notion right out of the gate. And by gate, I think it's clear I mean vagina.

Weekend Roundup: Preparing To Be Disrupted

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 04:47 PM PST

Getty/WorldPost Illustration

This week, The WorldPost conference on "The Future of Work" took place at Lancaster House in London. Discussion around the theme "prepare to be disrupted" ranged from how the emergent sharing economy, along with 3D desktop manufacturing, would take work back into the home to worries that automation could eliminate as much as 47 percent of current jobs in the United States.

Participants included Google's Eric Schmidt, LinkedIn's Reid Hoffman, economists Laura Tyson, Nouriel Roubini and Mohamed El-Erian, Steve Jobs' biographer Walter Isaacson, Japanese robot creator Tomotaka Takahashi and Arianna Huffington among others. Jordan's Queen Rania spoke about how social media is fostering small business startups in the Arab world and offering a different narrative than that of the fanatics. She also called for dropping the "I" from ISIS since "there's nothing Islamic about them."

In The WorldPost, Ian Goldin of the Oxford Martin School writes that technological advance can lead to greater inequality or inclusive prosperity depending on how we govern ourselves. In an interview, futurist Jeremy Rifkin outlines the zero-marginal cost economy he sees coming. XPrize founder Peter Diamandis discusses his new book "Bold: How to Go Big, Create Wealth and Impact the World" and how exponential technologies such as 3D manufacturing and synthetic biology are transforming all of our lives for the better. This week's series from Singularity University looks at Germany's advanced robotic metal sculpting machines. WorldPost Associate Editor Peter Mellgard reports that, "artificial intelligence is breaking out of the box," according to a panel of experts who recently gathered in New York at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Amy Rosen writes that the skill most needed in the future is an entrepreneurial mindset to navigate the ever-changing innovation economy. Virgin Unite's Jean Oelwang writes that businesses of the future are looking beyond the bottom line and are becoming people and purpose oriented. Reflecting from Tokyo on a recent visit by Thomas Piketty, Yuriko Koike explains "why Japan does not have America's super-rich problem."

Speaking at the London conference, MIT's Andrew McAfee argues that digital technology is "the best economic news in human history" but says that it poses many challenges to job creation in the future. David Gergen, the long-time presidential adviser now at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, proposes that the best way to adapt to tech disruption is "from the bottom up" instead of waiting for government policy. Other topics reported on from the conference included: how jobs are at risk because of advancing technologies, why women are winners when it comes to successful petitions, how the myths around meditation and business have been busted and why, according to Martha Lane Fox, co-founder of Lastminute.com, none of her peers in the House of Lords understands the Internet.

As the National People's Congress got underway in China this week, legal scholar He Jiahong writes from Beijing that establishing the rule of law in China must challenge "guanxi," or personal connections, in business and politics. WorldPost China Correspondent Matt Sheehan gives us an inside look at dissident artist Ai Weiwei's exhibit on Alcatraz island in San Francisco Bay. He also writes about an anti-pollution documentary that went viral in China.

Writing from Moscow, Georgy Bovt says Russia is headed down a "dark path" after the murder of Boris Nemtsov. French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy says Nemtsov's example will live long after his murder at the doorstep of the Kremlin. Writing from Athens, Kyriakos Mitskotakis looks at how European realities have deeply constrained the radical plans of the new Greek government.

In this week's "Forgotten Fact," The WorldPost looks at Russia's investigation of opposition leaders and why it does not bode well for the Nemtsov case.

Mia Bloom discusses "how ISIS is using marriage as a trap" to lure young women from the West and elsewhere to join with its fighters in Syria and Iraq. WorldPost Middle East Correspondent Sophia Jones reports from Istanbul this week on the merciless humor of Middle East comics directed at ISIS. She also writes about NFL stars who have traveled to Turkey to teach women football. Writing from Berlin following Bibi's visit to Washington, German parliamentarian Philipp Missfelder argues that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is right about Iran and that "no deal is better than a bad deal."

Finally, in light of the death of Turkey's famed novelist Yasar Kemal, an ethnic Kurd, Behlül Özkan writes that, "in this time of great darkness in the Middle East, the Kurdish movement has reason to be hopeful about the future."

CEO Report March 6

Cell use in tunnels

Great news for Link light rail riders. Someday, possibly as early as the middle of next year, you’ll be able to use your cellphones in our light rail tunnels and stations. This is a priority for a lot of our riders and we were very pleased that the Sound Transit Operations Committee on Thursday approved a contract to supply cell service in all underground transit tunnels and stations.

The contract calls for Mobilitie Investments III to pay for the design, installation, operation and maintenance in current and future transit tunnels and underground stations. Mobilitie will pay Sound Transit a minimum monthly fee of $7,500 for the license term of 10 years, including any option years. Mobilitie will also make one-time payments of $250,000 for University Link and East Link and a one-time payment of $300,000 for Northgate Link tunnels.

After installation of the host network, any wireless carrier will be able to provide cell service in Link’s underground transit facilities.

Preparing for U Link

U Link light rail service to Capitol Hill and the University of Washington begins in early 2016 and we’ve been busy working with our partners, King County Metro Transit and the City of Seattle, on plans to improve bus service and keep traffic moving.

A series of meetings this month gives the public a chance to learn more and provide comments about potential route changes to better connect bus riders with the U Link line. At the upcoming public meetings, riders can speak with Metro and Sound Transit staff about how they might use transit once U Link is open. Extending Link to Capitol Hill and the UW gives Metro and Sound Transit the opportunity to revise and improve the transit network in northeast Seattle, Capitol Hill, and SR 520—one facet of the transit integration initiative from Dow Constantine, King County Executive and Chair of the Sound Transit Board of Directors.

For more information and the meeting times see here.

January ridership

Sound Transit train and bus ridership increased by 5 percent, or more than 130,000 boardings in January, compared with the same month a year earlier.

Leading the way was Sounder commuter rail, where boardings were up 22 percent for the month. Driving that increase was the addition of new riders on both the north and south lines and the fact that there were no mudslides this January. In January 2014, 28 Sounder north line trips were lost to mudslides.

Also in January, ST Express boardings increased by 2.3 percent and Link was up 5 percent.

Sounder to Sounders

It’s getting close to spring and that means special Sounder train service to the Sounders FC matches. The service kicks off this Sunday for the Sounders match against the New England Revolution.

Stadium-bound trains from the south will depart Lakewood at 3:45 p.m. and trains from the north will depart Everett at 4:15 p.m. Return trains depart King Street Station 35 minutes after the match.

A complete schedule of Sounder service to select Sounders FC matches this season is available at Sound Transit Sounders FC schedules.

Special Sounder service is in addition to regular Link light rail service to and from CenturyLink Field. Many ST Express buses also drop off passengers near the stadium, see soundtransit.org/Schedules.

Mike Harbour, Sound Transit Deputy CEO

The Sound Transit Operations Committee on Thursday

  • Approved a contract with MBI Seattle to purchase and install workstations for the second floor of Union Station for a total authorized contract amount not to exceed $387,185.

  • Approved: (1) a ten year license with four five-year options to extend with Mobilitie Investments III, LLC to install, operate and maintain a cellular host network in all current and future tunnels and stations used by Link Light Rail, (2) any agreements or permits with King County that are necessary to complete work associated with the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel and (3) incur other costs to implement the wireless network within Board-adopted operating and capital budgets, provided compensation received must not be less than the total costs incurred by Sound Transit to implement the project during the term of the Mobilitie contract.

A Christian Guide to #DressGate

By now you have seen the dress, and gone through the stages of denial, bewilderment, and acceptance of how your perception of color differs from the next person. You may have even read The Science of Why No One Agrees on the Color of This Dress. But you may not yet have had a faith writer exegete the profound spiritual significance of the dress. Do not fear, I am here to deliver. Here is a simple Christian Guide to #Dressgate. Read more.

Boston Interfaith Leaders: Focus On Victims Of Marathon Bombing

The trial for accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev began Wednesday amid what some see as an increasingly tense climate for Muslims in the country. In Boston, though, faith leaders say the focus should be on building bridges between faiths and supporting the victims as the trial reopens what will be deep wounds for many. Read more.

Dear Erskine College, God Does Not Hate Gay People

This past week, Erskine College came out as an openly bigoted institution by publicly stating they do not want Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender students and those who are enrolled will be disciplined. The South Carolina supposed place of higher learning issued a statement that students are "expected to follow the teachings of scripture concerning matters of human sexuality and institutional decisions will be made in light of this position." I'm curious, will Erskine College stop serving pork chops or bacon since "it is unclean?" - Leviticus 11:7. Read more.

Support For Gay Marriage Is Piling On From All Directions -- Including From Conservative Christians

According to results released Thursday, the 2014 survey found 56 percent of Americans overall now support civil marriage for same-sex couples, up from 48 percent in 2012. The numbers bumped up in every age group and political persuasion. Because nearly three in four adults under age 35 are the most strongly in favor of gay marriage, Smith said there's likely to be even more movement in this direction in society overall: "They're the engine moving change." 6 Things I've Learned About Life by Working With Hospice

When people find out that I volunteer to visit hospice patients the reaction is often less than positive. There is a general distaste and fear surrounding death. It's hard for many to understand why anyone would seek out experiencing that on a regular basis. "Why don't you work with children or something a bit more uplifting?" I've heard before. Read more.

One Nation, Under God, Indivisible

This week, the New York City public school system established Eid al-Fitr, a holiday marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, a holiday honoring the Abrahamic legacy -- together marking the two most important Muslim celebrations of the year -- as official school holidays beginning in September. To the 10 percent strong of New York City's public school children that are Muslim, and to the others who will celebrate with the American Muslim community by henceforth taking a day off with their families, congratulations on a victory for the fabric of NYC, and ultimately for the United States of America. HUFFPOST HILL - Snow Shoes Day

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 03:36 PM PST

HuffPost Hill
The GOP leadership is skipping the commemoration of the march in Selma, but they’re doing everything they can to pass the job-creating Keystone XL Pipeline bill, so it’s cool. Garden State voters are longing for the days when their senators kept their illicit activity to the private sector. And Don Young wants to sic wolves on the homeless, which either means Don Young is insane or this is some kind of false flag to increase support for gun ownership among the destitute. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Friday, March 6th, 2015:

DOJ TO FILE CORRUPTION CHARGES AGAINST MENENDEZ - Once again the Obama IRS' runaway persecution of conserv -- oh. CNN: "The Justice Department is preparing to bring criminal corruption charges against New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat, alleging he used his Senate office to push the business interests of a Democratic donor and friend in exchange for gifts. People briefed on the case say Attorney General Eric Holder has signed off on prosecutors' request to proceed with charges, CNN has learned exclusively. An announcement could come within weeks. Prosecutors are under pressure in part because of the statute of limitation on some of the allegations. The case could pose a high-profile test of the Justice Department's ability to prosecute sitting lawmakers, having already spawned a legal battle over whether key evidence the government has gathered is protected by the Constitution's Speech and Debate clause. The FBI and prosecutors from the Justice Department's public integrity section, have pursued a variety of allegations against Menendez, who has called the probe part of 'smear campaign' against him." [CNN]

Menendez plans to hold a press conference tonight in Newark.

HOUSE GOP LEADERS SKIPPING SELMA - Anna Palmer & Lauren French: "Scores of U.S. lawmakers are converging on tiny Selma, Alabama, for a large commemoration of a civil rights anniversary. But their ranks don’t include a single member of House Republican leadership -- a point that isn’t lost on congressional black leaders. None of the top leaders -- House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy or Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was once thought likely to attend to atone for reports that he once spoke before a white supremacist group — will be in Selma for the three-day event that commemorates the 1965 march and the violence that protesters faced at the hands of white police officers." [Politico]

Republicans are trying to look busy with their Obamacare replacements in case ol' John Roberts comes through.

DEMS ROOTING FOR BOEHNER - Only exacerbating John Boehner's problems. Here's to you, John! The Hill: "Tea Party Republicans contemplating a bid to oust Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) shouldn't count on Democrats to help them unseat the Speaker. And without their support, there is no chance to topple Boehner in this Congress...Democrats from across an ideological spectrum say they'd rather see Boehner remain atop the House than replace him with a more conservative Speaker who would almost certainly be less willing to reach across the aisle in search of compromise. Replacing him with a Tea Party Speaker, they say, would only bring the legislative process -- already limping along -- to a screeching halt. 'I'd probably vote for Boehner [because] who the hell is going to replace him? [Ted] Yoho?' Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) said Wednesday, referencing the Florida Tea Party Republican who’s fought Boehner on a host of bipartisan compromise bills...'Then we would get Scalise or somebody? Geez, come on,' said Grijalva, who referenced House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.). 'We can be suicidal but not stupid.'" [The Hill ]

@jbendery: Biden on Ben Carson's "ridiculous assertion" that prison makes straight people gay: "I mean Jesus. God."

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - What could go wrong? Guy Boulton: Tucked into Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget is a massive overhaul of the system that provides long-term care to more than 50,000 elderly or disabled people in Wisconsin -- a dramatic change that blindsided those currently managing the care. The proposal, which would affect more than $2 billion a year in spending, would replace a system built over several decades with a new model in which the state would contract with large insurance companies to manage both long-term care and medical care. 'No one had any inkling this was happening,' said Michael Blumenfeld, a spokesman for the Wisconsin Family Care Association." [Journal-Sentinel]

UPSIDE DOWNER - When Robert Annis got laid off in 2011, executives at his companysaid the economic recovery "is not happening as quickly or favorably as we had hoped." Annis was part of a mass layoff of 700 journalists by Gannett, which had employed him as a reporter at the Indianapolis Star for nine years. Eventually, Annis began to focus less on getting another full-time job and more on finding freelance work. He's now writing for magazines about outdoor travel and is basically back on his feet -- and so is the economic recovery. The Labor Department announced Friday that the national jobless rate had ticked down to 5.5 percent as the economy added 295,000 jobs in February, the latest in a long series of positive jobs reports. "It took a while to kind of transition the mindset," Annis, now 41, told The Huffington Post. "To go from having a full-time job and benefits and 40 hours a week at a job -- and I really loved that job. I devoted quite a bit of my life to that job, so it took a while for me to come over to the mindset [of a freelancer]." [HuffPost]

WISCONSIN SENATE PASSES RIGHT-TO-WORK BILL, HEADS TO WALKER'S DESK - Dave Jamieson: "Following a heated, all-night debate between lawmakers in Madison, the Wisconsin state assembly passed right-to-work legislation on Friday morning, sending the controversial bill to the desk of Gov. Scott Walker (R). Once Walker signs the anti-union bill, as he has promised to do, Wisconsin will become the 25th right-to-work state in the country, further weakening an already-diminished labor movement in the state. The Wisconsin AFL-CIO called the legislation 'reckless.'...The votes in both chambers fell along party lines, except for one senate Republican who sided with Democrats. Democrats insisted the legislation would reduce wages and fail to create jobs, while dramatically changing long-standing policy on labor unions in the state." [HuffPost]

VAN HOLLEN'S DEPARTURE SHAKES UP HOUSE LEADERSHIP - Roll Call: "Sources say Van Hollen wasn’t the presumptive heir to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s mantle, even though the California Democrat has been grooming him over the years, giving him increasing responsibilities and ensuring he always had a seat at the table….Sources stressed that in gaming out what comes next, the first person to account for is Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer, another Maryland Democrat who has been waiting for years to be party’s No. 1 in the House...Two members especially benefiting from Van Hollen’s departure are the chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the House Democratic Caucus: Xavier Becerra of California and Joseph Crowley of New York. Becerra, who might end up running for the Senate seat to be left empty by retiring DemocratBarbara Boxer, could stay in the House and launch a campaign to be the first Latino to lead the caucus. He’ll be thinking about his future carefully at this point: His final term as caucus chairman is at the end of this Congress, at which point he’ll be a man without a seat at the leadership table." [Roll Call]

Harry Reid has already endorsed Van Hollen.

JIM INHOFE HAS HIS VERY OWN CLIMATOLOGIST - Maybe Bill McKibben should take up carpentry and grow a beard. Grim: "Senator Jim Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma, became the object of global ridicule recently when he sauntered onto the floor of the world's greatest deliberative body with what he declared was persuasive evidence climate change was a hoax. In his hands was a snowball...Inhofe doesn't misunderstand the science; rather, he doesn't need science as his guide, because God has already assured him there is nothing to fear. In his recent book on climate change, which he titles The Greatest Hoax, he assures readers that the scientists -- which he refers to as 'alarmists' throughout the book -- can be ignored because a greater Authority has already spoken. 'I take my religion seriously,' Inhofe writes. '[T]his is what a lot of alarmists forget: God is still up there, and He promised to maintain the seasons and that cold and heat would never cease as long as the earth remains.'" [HuffPost]

SERIOUSLY, WHO NEEDS ARMOR-PIERCING BULLETS? - Have Montana's wolves smartened up and begun wearing tactical kevlar vests when harassing rancher's herds? Roll Call: "An Obama administration proposal to prohibit certain bullets has been raising the ire of lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week, with senators on Thursday joining calls for the executive branch to back down. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., sent a letter Thursday to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Director B. Todd Jones opposing restrictions on M855 'green tip' ammunition for the AR-15 rifle. The ATF’s draft framework proposes to roll back a 1986 exception granted to the bullets from a ban on 'armor-piercing ammunition.' 'The Obama administration’s blatant disregard for the Second Amendment and efforts to restrict Montanans’ right to keep and bear arms through unilateral action must be stopped. I will continue fighting to protect Montanans’ Second Amendment rights and halt any efforts to infringe upon our Constitutional freedoms,' Daines said in a statement. Sen. David Vitter teamed up with House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a fellow Louisiana Republican in sending a similar missive. Vitter and Scalise contend the proposed change is not tied to any actual incidents of shootings of police." [Roll Call]

SO JUST ANOTHER DAY FOR ALASKA POLITICS - "While Republican Rep. Don Young was talking about how releasing wolves in one district would get rid of homelessness, Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski was shocked that many of her colleagues took a snow day because of a winter storm in Washington, D.C. She spoke from the Dirksen Senate Office Building and was in total disbelief at just how empty it was -- then publicly shamed them on Facebook...'It is Thursday afternoon in Washington, D.C.,' she said in the video. '2:48 in the afternoon.' After a glance down the empty hallway, she said, 'these are all offices of members, staff, committees, and there’s nobody here.'" [Sun Times]

SR 520 Program update

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 03:05 PM PST

SR 520 westbound will be closed March 13-16

Any plans to "Go west young man" (or woman) across Lake Washington may be inconvenienced the weekend of March 13-16 by a closure of SR 520's westbound lanes. All westbound lanes of the highway will close from 11 p.m. Friday, March 13 to 5 a.m. Monday, March 16. The closure will stretch from 92nd Avenue Northeast on the Eastside to Montlake Boulevard in Seattle.

The planned closure will allow crews working on the West Approach Bridge North (WABN) to remove barriers and restripe the westbound off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard. This is preparatory work for the construction of a new ramp. Other crews will take advantage of the closure to do additional work on the new floating bridge and on the Eastside.

The weekend's work will also involve closing one westbound lane of SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard and I-5. This closure will happen on Saturday, March 14 from 6 a.m. until midnight. Work progress may require this single-lane closure to be extended on Sunday as well.

Drivers (of both vehicles and pioneer-laden covered wagons) can follow the 520 Twitter account (@wsdot_520) for updates, but please do not check your phone while operating moving vehicles (or horse-drawn wagons).

How will bus service change when Link light rail comes to Capitol Hill and the UW?

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 02:24 PM PST

How will bus service change when Link light rail comes to Capitol Hill and the UW?

Have a Say between now and March 31

Link light rail is coming to Capitol Hill and Husky Stadium in early 2016. Metro and Sound Transit have developed two alternative concepts for how buses could work with light rail. These concepts include new and improved connections and changes to make transit more efficient, reliable, and easy to use.

Do you use or want to use transit in Capitol Hill, the University District, northeast Seattle, Eastlake, Madison Valley, the Central Area, Montlake, South Lake Union, or along SR-520?

Tell us what you think about the two alternatives:

  • Fill out our survey
  • Come to a meeting

Tell us how you might use these alternative concepts and how you would make them better. Your input will help shape our proposal. You will get an opportunity to comment on that proposal in May before King County Council and the Sound Transit Board make decisions about what bus changes will be made after Link light rail service comes to Capitol Hill and the UW.

»Find details, the survey, and a calendar of events at www.kingcounty.gov/metro/LinkConnections
»Use #Bus2Link on social media

Corruption Charge Near for Sen. Menendez
The Justice Department reportedly plans to charge Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey with corruption for doing political favors for a donor and friend. "People briefed on the case say Attorney General Eric Holder has signed off on prosectors' request to proceed with charges," CNN reports. The FBI has been investigating Menendez's relationship with Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen, on whose plane the senator flew to the Dominican Republic in 2010. In 2013, Menendez paid back Melgen $58,000 after not disclosing the flight. Menendez has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. Menendez, a Democrat, was reelected in 2012 and is considered a leading hawk on Iran and Russia in the Senate.

Ferguson's Shakedown Judge Owes Taxes
Oh this is rich: Ferguson, Missouri judge Ronald J. Brockmeyer—who uses harsh fines and penalties against residents who don't pay their traffic tickets—owes $170,000 in back taxes to the government, The Guardian found. Brockmeyer's creation of several new court fees are "widely considered abusive and may be unlawful," according to the Department of Justice, which also named him as one of the officials who dismissed tickets for themselves and friends. The feds say Brockmeyer's fines are part of a racially biased system that punishes blacks to fund the city. (Brockmeyer apparently didn't read the DoJ report.) Brockmeyer's court is the subject of a federal class-action lawsuit alleging imprisonment of  "a human being solely because the person could not afford to make a monetary payment."

NASA Probe Reaches Dwarf Planet
In a historic first, a spacecraft has reached a dwarf planet. NASA's Dawn satellite entered orbit around Ceres, a mini-planet located between Mars and Jupiter, early Friday after a seven-and-a-half year journey. Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt, making up about one-third of the belt's total mass. Little is known about the planet discovered 200 years ago, including if it has polar caps. The last remaining unexplored planet in the solar system is Pluto, which a NASA spacecraft will reach this July.

Colorado Republican: IUDs Are Abortions
A family-planning initiative that provided free intrauterine devices to more than 30,000 women in Colorado is having trouble getting more funding because conservative lawmakers say the contraceptive devices are akin to abortion. Republican Kevin Lundberg, chairman of the Colorado senate health committee, saying that because an IUD in some cases can prevent fertilized eggs from embedding in the uterus, this counts as abortion and thus disqualifies the measure from state funding. "The state constitution says no direct or indirect funding from the state shall go toward abortion," he said.
