Is this Jesus' childhood home?

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 03:59 PM PST

Thursday March 5, 2015

Could This Be Jesus' Childhood Home?

According to the Bible, Jesus grew up in Nazareth, before leaving his hometown to wander and perform miracles. Later, he traveled back to preach, then survived an attempt by the townspeople to throw him off a cliff. Nazareth is now a predominantly Arab city of about 60,000 people, the majority of them Muslim. A British archaeologist says a first-century dwelling found beneath a convent in Nazareth could have been Jesus' childhood home. Read more.

Nuns In Vietnam Serve Victims Of Biblical Disease

Most of the 420 lepers living in the provinces of Ben Tre and Tra Vinh in southern Vietnam lose their toes or fingers as a result of the disease, and they live in extreme poverty. Many are elderly and live in remote ramshackle houses without power and running water; they often have to walk through their neighbors' yards to get to the road. Plus, the government does not give them the usual social security allowance other people receive. They live alone with a debilitating complex about their disease and physical disabilities. Some are single and some others have been abandoned by their children. But there is some light. Read more.

The Purim Story Is A Warning, Not a Justification

"In his much-derided speech to a joint session of Congress, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invoked the story of Purim, the Jewish holiday celebrated this week, as a story of Jewish self-defense and survival. For Netanyahu, the story of Purim, which comes from the Book of Esther, was a story about Jewish survival in the face of intended annihilation. But he forgot to finish the story." Read more.

Syracuse Student May Lose Four Fingers After Allegedly Being Hazed In The Snow

A Syracuse University pledge may lose four fingers to frostbite after being forced to do push-ups in the snow, NBC News reports.

Two of his allegedly cold-hearted fraternity brothers face criminal charges of hazing in the first degree, according to Syracuse police.

The Associated Press reports Nu Alpha Phi fraternity brothers took three pledges to a park on Saturday night. The brothers allegedly forced the pledges to do push-ups and crawl through the snow as a punishment for doing chores incorrectly.

This Program Found A Way To Boost Community College Graduation Rates

While access to higher education has increased dramatically over the past few decades, community college graduation rates continue to be problematic. That's why educational institutions like the City University of New York are taking big steps to implement a solution. Launched in 2007, CUNY's Accelerated Study in Associate Programs offers additional support to community college students with the goal of helping them maintain full-time enrollment status and graduate on time. Lashawn Richburg-Hayes, director of MDRC, a nonprofit education and social policy research organization, joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to discuss why ASAP has experienced widespread success thus far. Yale Students: New Financial Aid Requirements Create Class Divide

A requirement that Yale undergraduates on financial aid pay up to $6,400 annually toward their education is coming under protest from students who argue it creates a divide along class lines and keeps them from participating more in campus life.

A petition drive has gathered signatures from more than a thousand students calling for the elimination of the student contribution.

The Ivy League university with a $23.9 billion endowment has some of the nation's most generous aid policies, including a promise that students can graduate without any loans, but some students say they have been advised to borrow money when they had trouble meeting the financial obligation.

The Federal Government Has No Idea How Much Americans Owe On Student Loans

Americans collectively owe lenders some $1.32 trillion on their student loans. Or at least $1.14 trillion. Or maybe $1.16 trillion. Two years ago, it might have been only $708 billion.

The different figures -- from, respectively, the Federal Reserve in Washington, the U.S. Department of Education, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and a separate Federal Reserve in Washington estimate -- underscore a basic fact: The federal government doesn't know much about student debt.

"The financial crisis made it obvious that an ability to understand and anticipate what is happening in the household sector is essential to gauging the strength and resiliency of the U.S. economy," William Dudley, president of the New York Fed, said Wednesday. But after ticking off a list of about a half-dozen questions about student debt, Dudley said it was "very hard to answer these questions with existing data."

On Wednesday, Dudley presided over a meeting of federal policymakers, regulators and researchers at the New York Fed to discuss the difficulties they and the country face in trying to grasp a potential problem authorities can barely measure. The stated purpose was to "discuss current data gaps and to explore ways to enhance the quality and accessibility of existing data sources." The meeting, whose very convening effectively served as an acknowledgement of the federal government's failure to properly oversee the student loan market, was closed to the news media.

However, conversations with those who attended, as well as prepared remarks, tweets by attendees, officials' past comments and other data sources provide a clue as to some of the challenges that were discussed.

Federal officials can't say how much borrowers owe on their student loans or how many of them are delinquent -- statistics they can easily call up for, say, home mortgages -- despite the fact that the Education Department owns or guarantees as much as 90 percent of all student debt. In response to increasing concern about student debt, the Education Department recently began publishing more detailed data on the federal student loan program. Yet critical figures on loan delinquencies and repayment plan usage in some areas of the program remain secret or unknown, and the department has reportedly been unwilling to share crucial information with other agencies.

The Education Department hasn't been consistent in its views about student debt or its impact on the economy. In 2013, Education Secretary Arne Duncan told Congress that "there's no upside" to the nation's trillion-dollar pileup of student loans. The next year, however, Duncan said that although student debt was "too high," the topic wasn't among "the top 10 things that keep me up at night." He added that he'd rather focus on increasing college graduation rates.

Federal officials outside the Education Department worry the lack of reliable numbers prevents them from diagnosing problems, identifying solutions or even understanding how student debt may be harming the U.S. economy. These officials have stepped into the void created by the Education Department's apparent absence by attempting to collect their own data, but the efforts have had mixed results.

Colleges Where Graduates Get The Most Bang For Their Buck

While graduates of engineering and Ivy League schools tend to make the largest amount money, graduates of public schools are more likely to have a higher annual percentage of return on investment, a new report from PayScale shows.

The Georgia Institute of Technology and Brigham Young University tie for the top spot in the salary information company's rankings, which measured annual ROI over 20 years for students who lived on-campus without financial aid. BYU, the only private college within the list's top 50, has a relatively low total cost -- $67,300, compared to Georgia Tech's $86,700, according to PayScale. This total cost measures four years of tuition, fees, room, board, books and supplies without financial aid. Both schools have an annual ROI of 12.5 percent.

"The reason [public universities have high ROIs] is the lower cost," Lydia Frank, director of editorial and marketing for PayScale, told The Huffington Post. "Private schools tend to have a higher price tag."

Why Even Small, Progressive Grinnell College Has Trouble Dealing With Sexual Assault On Campus

Grinnell's hearing panel for rape cases is like that of many colleges: It includes a student, a professor and a staff member who received special training about sexual violence and Title IX. Yet like many colleges, it's moving toward a single-investigator model. The school is hiring former Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus to handle future assault cases.

Most of the student victims Voos speaks with don't want to engage in an adjudication process, according to numbers that she tracks. Anna's frustrating experience may provide clues as to why.

When a hearing panel took up her case in May 2012, they asked her what kind of bra she was wearing the night of the incident, Anna said, and allowed the accused student to directly question her, a practice "strongly discouraged" by the Department of Education. Anna said the accused asked her, "Why are you doing this to me? Why couldn't we have just talked about this?"

When Anna got to speak, she described explicitly saying "no" and crying during the assault.

"He said he was essentially teaching me about sex and he had a better idea about what I wanted than I did," Anna said.

Anna's offender was found responsible for "disorderly and disruptive behavior," "psychological damage" and "sexual misconduct," according to documents obtained by HuffPost. The school didn't find him guilty of rape -- a criminal term -- but did find him accountable for "nonconsensual penetrative intercourse." Conduct probation would serve as his punishment.

He also had to write a letter of apology, which the college delivered to Anna in July 2012. In the letter, which is five sentences long, he admits his "actions on the night of February 9th did not meet the definition of effective consent," and says he hopes he will "never commit such a heinous offense ever again."

When a student is found responsible in sexual misconduct cases, the college's first consideration as a sanction is always dismissal, said Conner, the dean. Grinnell then works backward from there depending on "mitigating or aggravating factors," she added.

"We do our best for our sense of ethics and appropriateness," Conner said.

Anna stayed on campus, but in September 2014 gave up on trying to get the college to hold her offender accountable for the alleged violations of the no-contact order, or for harassment she reported by his friends. Adding salt to her wounds, he was hired by the college this academic year for a student security job that gave him oversight of campus events, essentially to make sure students are being safe at parties. The college recently said any student still on probation would not be eligible for this position in the future, and he resigned his position as Anna raised concern on campus about his role.

The accused student in Anna's case told HuffPost he realizes he did violate the school's consent policy at the time, but chalks it up to "mixed signals" and doesn't consider it rape. At the time, Grinnell used an "effective consent" policy that stipulated consent must be "informed, freely and actively given," and could not come from the use of "intimidation, or coercion." The school switched to "affirmative consent" in fall 2012, which states that consent must be given for "each act of sexual activity," and can be withdrawn at any time.

The accused student said he's "pissed" with how Grinnell handled the case as well: The no-contact order meant he could stay in school but couldn't take certain classes, and to avoid violating his probation he had to take routes far out of his way at a time when he was on crutches due to an athletic injury.

"If the school really thought that I was guilty of this, I shouldn't be here; if my case was as serious as Anna made it out to be, I shouldn't be here right now," he said, adding, "I'm grateful it hasn't changed my views on how I saw rape -- I'm not questioning every single woman that said that it happens to them."

Why is "raunch" comedy so shocking?

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 03:00 PM PST

Middlebrow
By Lauren Duca
Middlebrow is a recap of the week in entertainment, celebrity and television news that provides a comprehensive look at the state of pop culture. From the rock bottom to highfalutin, Middlebrow is your accessible guidebook to the world of entertainment. Sign up to receive it in your inbox here.

Well, it happened. Much like chopped salad and men’s tank tops before it, The New York Times has discovered “raunch" comedy courtesy of an op-ed from Maureen Dowd.

In a piece called “Dirty Words From Pretty Mouths” (did that make you cringe, too?), Dowd touches on shows like “The Mindy Project” and “Girls,” along with a smattering of Sundance films, to deduce that there is a “small but significant trend of women writing, directing and producing more sexually explicit movies and TV shows.”

3315mid

If you’re wondering whether Dowd has ever watched “Sex and the City,” based on the intro, she has at least read the show's Wikipedia page and acknowledges this is not wholly new. She refers to the work of Carrie Bradshaw and Judd Apatow on pop culture as "a vulgar truth universally acknowledged," and views "women bringing raunch culture to the screen on their own" as the trend.

Except, this is also not a trend. It's evidence of a new generation emerging in the industry. As Elisabeth Donnelly put it in a piece for Flavorwire: "What older viewers may see as a boundary-pushing depiction of sex looks a whole lot like simple honesty to younger viewers." (It’s always so strange when New York Times trend pieces tell us about our world. Sort of like an old alien deigning to slip off its intergalactic pearls and mingle with us earthlings. “Wow, cut up lettuce!,” the alien might say, walking past a Fresh & Co. on a hot summer afternoon. “Men in sleeveless shirts. Women being explicitly sexual beings! All for the first time.”)

Kidding aside, there are bigger issues at play here than whether or not this can be seen as a "trend" (even though it's definitely not). The biggest failure of Dowd's piece is its inability to dissect the lack of freedom women have in expressing themselves, calling the sexual version of expression “raunch.” In the hands of a man, what is "raunch" comedy exactly? Is it just "being a dude-bro."

3315mid2

Dowd describes "raunch" comedy as women being "blunt about what turns them on and off" -- hardly something new for men. What's happening here is that women are continuing to move into a realm of sexual expression that has traditionally been occupied by men. That's where the need to label and cite trends comes from. Any time women execute tropes, archetypes, forms of comedy (whatever the "inherently male," as Dowd puts it, thing may be), this kind of reductive packaging becomes just one more way of limiting any "inherently female" ownership of that space.

We live in a world where women's behavior is constantly criticized in terms of double standards (see: Mike Huckabee getting his sensible briefs in a bunch over ladies cursing at work). To discuss this without even bothering to dissect the inherent sexism or oppressive gender norms at play is irresponsible (in general but especially in the hands of a New York Times critic). Yeah, "dirty words" are great, but speaking out about the deeper impact of these distinctions are what our "pretty mouths" should be for.

HUFFPOST HILL - Snow Booze Day

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 02:20 PM PST

HuffPost Hill
“I want the public to see my emails,” Hillary Clinton announced today, cribbing MoveOn’s original slogan. Despite security concerns, police allowed children to sled on the Capitol grounds today, which we consider a slippery slope. And Trey Radel launched his own crisis PR firm, telling prospective clients that his ability to manage crises has lead him all the way to the top of his very own crisis PR firm. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, March 5th, 2015:

MCCONNELL DELAYS VOTE ON IRAN BILL - Jen Bendery: "Feeling the heat from a Democratic rebellion, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is reversing course on a plan to move forward next week with a controversial Iran bill. McConnell spokesman Don Stewart confirmed Thursday that the GOP leader is pulling the bill from next week's schedule. Instead, the Senate will turn to human trafficking legislation. The bill, introduced by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), would give Congress 60 days to review -- and potentially reject -- any deal that scales back U.S. nuclear sanctions on Iran. The measure has bipartisan support, but Democrats have insisted their support hinges on allowing delicate U.S.-Iran talks to play out first. International negotiations on curbing Iran's nuclear capabilities have entered their final phase as the March 31 deadline for a final deal nears. McConnell infuriated Democrats on Tuesday by saying he planned to bypass regular order and expedite the bill to the floor next week, versus sticking to a previous agreement to hold off on any votes untilMarch 24 and until after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee debates it. Democratic co-sponsors of the billretaliated by vowing to block it, which left Republicans without the assurance of a veto-proof margin on it. The White House has already threatened a veto." [HuffPost]

@EleanorNorton: No enforcement of #sledding ban on Capitol Hill today. Thank you Capitol Police!

LEAN OUT - Roll Call: "Rep. Candice S. Miller, R-Mich., the sole female House committee chairman, will not seek a ninth term, she announced Thursday. 'This is the community that I love, that I call home, and at the conclusion of my current term in office, I will be coming home. I will not seek re-election,' Miller announced in a video posted to Facebook. First elected to Congress in 2002, Miller is one of 22 women in the House GOP conference. Her district includes the eastern part of Michigan that borders Canada on land and water. In 2012, Miller became the chairwoman of the House Administration Committee, making her the unofficial “Mayor of Capitol Hill.” The committee has jurisdiction over election changes, daily House operations and oversight over legislative branch agencies and Capitol security." [Roll Call]

AMERICA'S FERGUSON PROBLEM - Matt Sledge and Ryan Reilly: "It was billed as an investigation of the Ferguson Police Department. But a hard-hittingreport released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Justice also reads as an indictment of cities and towns across the St. Louis region. The report implicates at least four other municipalities in alleged misconduct or questionable behavior. And as the Justice Department itself acknowledged, many of the conditions described in the report could have been written about any number of the 90 municipalities in St. Louis County. 'What's listed in the report about Ferguson is a widespread practice,' said Thomas Harvey, executive director for the Arch City Defenders, a nonprofit legal advocacy organization that has brought attention to the municipal courts in St. Louis County over the past several months. 'I don't think anyone who takes these issues seriously … can limit their work to Ferguson.'" [HuffPost]

RICK SCOTT OFFICIALLY LOSES DRUG TEST BATTLE - Curt Anderson: "Florida Gov. Rick Scott will not seek U.S. Supreme Court review of a law that would have required applicants for welfare benefits to submit to mandatory drug testing. The law, a top priority of the Republican governor's first term, was ruled unconstitutional by two federal courts. Scott's administration did not ask the Supreme Court to consider the case by a Tuesday deadline." [Associated Press]

Scott pissed away hundreds of thousands of dollars defending that sucker in court.

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - #TBT: Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and other Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee have revived an old fight by introducing a bill to stop the Obama administration from waiving work requirements for welfare recipients. This issue first surfaced during the 2012 presidential campaign, when GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and Ryan, his running mate, accused the Obama White House of trying to eliminate work requirements for beneficiaries of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the program most closely associated with the concept of "welfare." That summer, the administration had invited statesto apply for waivers from certain federal rules dictating welfare work requirements. Romney, Ryan and other critics said the move gutted the landmark welfare reform legislation of 1996, even though the White House's invitation didn't result in any actual policy change: No state ever asked for a waiver. DEMS WANT VOTE ON LORETTA LYNCH - Not in recent memory has one party seemingly so enjoyed the minority. It's like Senate Democrats know they can't graduate with anything higher than a 2.5 and have resolved to party their faces off until graduation. Jen Bendery: "Democrats wrote to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday, urging him to schedule a vote on U.S. attorney general nominee Loretta Lynch, who has waited months for confirmation. 'No one questions that Ms. Lynch is qualified and ready to serve, yet we are troubled that her nomination continues to languish on the Senate floor,' reads the letter, signed by 43 Senate Democrats and two Independents. 'As of this writing, Ms. Lynch’s nomination has been pending for 117 days, making her the longest pending Attorney General nominee in three decades.' 'We are ready to work with you to ensure a swift vote on this nomination, and we hope you will schedule a floor vote without further delay,' it concludes. Republicans have slow-walked Lynch's nomination ever since President Barack Obama announced it in November. They insisted last year that Obama wait until this year to begin moving her nomination, and then waited until February to hold her hearing. The committee delayed action on her vote, and since she was voted out of committee last week, McConnell still hasn't scheduled her confirmation vote." [HuffPost]

HILLARY SAYS HER LIFE IS AN OPEN INBOX - Ben Smith thinkpiece on how clintonemail.com addreses are the new power symbol to arrive shortly. Igor Bobic: "Hillary Clinton responded to intense scrutiny over her email practices on Wednesday, saying she has asked the State Department to make available her private email during her tenure as secretary of state. 'I want the public to see my email. I asked State to release them. They said they will review them for release as soon as possible,' Clinton wrote in a tweet posted late Wednesday evening. A New York Times report published Monday evening set off a firestorm of criticism, and suggested Clinton violated State Department regulations by using a personal email account for government business, potentially shielding her correspondence from public inquiries like Freedom of Information Act requests. Her email account, clintonemail.com, was hosted by a server located at her home, and reportedly 'became a symbol of status within the family’s inner circle.'" [HuffPost]

Trey Radel, the congressman busted on cocaine charges in 2013, is starting his own crisis management PR firm.

RUBIO FINDS HIS OWN SHELDON - "Jeb Bush’s success in rounding up GOP donors as he pursues a likely presidential run has created a big question for his fellow Floridian, Sen. Marco Rubio: Will there be any money left for him? That’s where Norman Braman comes in. The Miami billionaire auto dealer and longtime Rubio benefactor is expected to put as much as $10 million into a pro-Rubio super PAC if the Florida senator decides to run, according to people familiar with his plans… 'I don’t pay any attention to that other distinguished Floridian,' [Braman said]. 'I respect Jeb Bush, but I think we need someone who represents the next generation.' Support from Braman, who also is a former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles football team, is exactly what the 43-year-old first-term senator needs. Rubio is expected to announce his presidential campaign next month, but he faces big hurdles as he prepares to do so. In a year when many donors are excited about governors such as Bush and Scott Walker of Wisconsin, his profile as a rookie senator with dazzling oratorical skills — similar to the Democratic incumbent — is a harder sell." [WaPo]

JEB BUSH FORMING FOREIGN POLICY TEAM - Cardboard cutout of James Baker not yet on board. Paul Blumenthal: "The Chertoff Group boasts a rich and mostly secret client list of intelligence and security companies, as previously detailed by The Huffington Post, that benefit financially from the global war on terror through government contracts and policies. The founder of that firm now has the ear of potential White House candidate Jeb Bush. The former two-term Florida governor has assembled a foreign policy advisory team laden with officials who served in his father’s and brother’s presidential administrations and have since spun through the revolving door into the world of influence peddling. They are consultants, lobbyists, lawyers and corporate board members for business interests eager to be heard by the man who might become the 45th president of the United States. Besides Chertoff himself, they include former CIA Director Michael Hayden, who works for the Chertoff Group, and former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, retired Adm. Robert Natter and Tom Ridge, the first Homeland Security secretary -- the latter three all run their own consulting firms. All of these men also sit on the boards of companies ready to reap huge rewards from defense, intelligence and security contracts." [HuffPost]

This week's featured post from our archive is an informative guide from Beau Coffron of Lunchbox Dad.

9 Things Never To Say To The Parents Of A Newborn

beau coffron

Now that I have a 1-month-old child again, it has become abundantly clear that there are times when people just don't know what to say to me. This is the third time I've been through this stage, and the comments are always the same. Sometimes people who don't know you well are just grasping for topics to talk about, and sometimes people with no kids are just clueless. It's not their fault; they just haven't been through it.

So consider this a guide to inform you about what not to say to those people who are in the middle of trying to figure out life with a newborn. Some of these are questions, some are statements, but none should ever leave your mouth when speaking to a new parent.

1. "Are you getting much sleep?"
What do you think? Parents of newborns generally walk around like extras in the show, The Walking Dead. If you see parents of newborns who don't look like this, they are most likely numb to the sleeplessness. Another possibility is the grandparents have just swooped in like heavenly angels and woken up throughout the night with the little devil, uh, I mean baby. This is the number one question asked of me. Just don't go there, the answer is always the same.

2. "Let me know if I can do anything for you."
I have a newborn. Like I have the time or energy to remember who told me to "ask them if I need anything." My mental capacity is near empty; if you want to know why, see #1 above. Some good questions would be, "What can I bring your family for dinner on Thursday?" or even, "Can I pick your kids up from school tomorrow and take them to the park to play?" Either of these is like a miracle from above. Don't make me call you and ask -- just tell me what you can do and when. And bring dessert with you. Dessert is never bad.

3. "How is your wife doing?"
She's fantastic. She just pushed a watermelon through a hole the size of an orange. She's never been better. In fact, she might just run a marathon next weekend on a whim. Instead ask, "I hope your wife is recovering well, what's one thing I can do for you so that you can have a little bit more time to take care of her?"

4. "Is the baby sleeping through the night yet?"
Why yes. At 2 weeks old he is a medical freak of nature and sleeping all the way through the night. With all the extra time on my hands from him sleeping so much, I have been researching new fashion trends. The one I am trying right now is called "Death Warmed Over." Do you like it? It's the newest look, especially among parents of newborns.

5. "I just got a puppy, so now I know what having a baby is like."
Really, do you now? Last time I checked, it was still illegal to lock up a baby in the dog kennel when it's in the way or you just can't handle any more of the messes. Did you have to get up to nurse the puppy at 2 a.m., 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.? I also don't think you woke this morning to a screaming little one covered with poop up to their armpits. I swear diapers aren't designed to hold it in, they actually are just there to channel poop up the baby's back. I could go on and on with this one, but you get the picture.

6. Usually said by a stranger in a store when the baby is screaming and you are just trying to make it through your shopping list and keep your sanity: "You know your baby is probably tired/hungry/has a dirty diaper/etc."
Listen, I didn't ask for your advice and I probably know exactly what my baby needs. Unfortunately, I am barely holding it together, haven't showered in four days and honestly couldn't care less what your opinion of the situation is. If you want to actually help, give me your place in line so I can get out of the store faster.

7. "When are you going to bring the baby over?"
You need to understand that getting a newborn out of the house can sometimes feel as daunting as defusing a bomb in under 30 seconds. Besides that, stupid people always want to touch newborns' hands, which spreads germs and sickness all over the place. And sick babies don't sleep... ever. So thanks for the offer, but our newborn will come out to play when we are good and ready.

8. "When are you having the next one?"
While adding another pooping machine to the fold is awfully tempting, we will hold off making that decision for now. People should never make important decisions while exhausted, stressed or in the middle of a major life change. Well, guess what? Having a newborn means we are dealing with all three of those. Also, if every parent of a newborn made that decision right away, no kid would ever have another brother or sister.

9. "Is having a baby worth all you give up for it?"
This baby is a miracle, and having him is one of the greatest moments of my life. We are a month in and I would do anything for him. Every dirty diaper, sleepless night and mind-numbing children's song is nothing compared to the joy of being a parent. I will never have a regret about giving up some of my freedom (and sleep) to raise my child. I just pray that I can be the parent all my children deserve and have a ton of fun at the same time!

Today's Story Highlights

China's Cybersecurity Plans Draw US Fire
China should change its tune on new rules for purchases from American
high-tech companies if it wants to do business with the United States,
President Obama recently warned. China reportedly is planning to ask
U.S. high-tech firms to hand over their encryption keys and install
security backdoors in their systems to allow surveillance as a
counterterrorism measure.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81783.html

The Great War's Untapped Video Game Opportunities
It's fair to say that game developers have missed an opportunity with
World War I. It was the first conflict to see aircraft used in combat,
the first to see tanks and other armored vehicles make an appearance on
the battlefield, and the first war in more than a century to completely
draw in the major powers of the world. WWI should be a setting ripe for
action and strategy games.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81778.html

ChaletOS Is a Design Tweak in the Linux House
ChaletOS began as a personal project of developer Dejan Petrovic. This
operating system has a familiar Windows-like style, with appealing
simplicity and impressive speed. Much of that performance credit goes to
the use of the Xfce desktop. The system controls are tweaked to bring
unique style-changing capabilities to a classic Linux desktop
environment.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81771.html

Nvidia's Shield Takes On Crysis With Confidence
Nvidia on Tuesday unveiled Shield, an Android TV console that in
addition to playing content locally, can stream video games, movies,
music, apps and more. Yes, it can play Crysis. That claim, a measure of
a gaming PC's power a few years ago, is how Nvidia is marketing the
Shield console. Nvidia's Shield Tablet led the way with its Tegra K1
processor and its ability to play Android ports of AAA games natively.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81776.html

Gadgets: A Lovely Sky Snapper, a Grotesque Power Pack and Wafer-Thin Speakers
There's a new Nikon camera that actually won't work for parents eager to
flash their cash at a kid's birthday party with an expensive DSLR when a
camera phone would work just fine. The D810A has an infrared filter that
probably will result in distorted colors when used for everyday
purposes. So you might not want to use it for that cute shot of a
butterfly nestling on a poppy.

ISIS 'Bulldozed' Ancient City
ISIS "bulldozed" the ancient Assryian city of Nimrud, Iraq, according to Baghdad. Iraq's tourism and antiquities ministry said on its Facebook page that ISIS "assaulted the historic city of Nimrud and bulldozed it with heavy vehicles." Last week, ISIS released video of forces destroying ancient artifacts at the Mosul Museum because the pieces of antiquity were deemed forms of "heresy."

Mike Brown Family Suing Ferguson, Wilson
Michael Brown's parents plan to bring a civil lawsuit for the wrongful death of their son against Darren Wilson and the city of Ferguson, Missouri. The announcment came a day after the Justice Department released its report on the abuses of the city's police department and said Wilson wouldn't be charged for violating Brown's civil rights. Brown family lawyers note that the burden of proof is lower in a civil case than the criminal cases that were considered by both the federal government and a St. Louis County grand jury.

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced Thursday that it will do away with elephant acts by 2018 because of public concern about the animals. Mars Had More Water Than Arctic Ocean
The Red Planet once had more water than the Arctic Ocean, according to NASA scientists. Around 4.3 billion years ago, Mars may have had enough water to have its entire surface covered in a layer about 450 feet deep. However, Mars lost 87 percent of its water to space over time, according to a new paper from NASA. "With Mars losing that much water, the planet was very likely wet for a longer period of time than was previously thought, suggesting it might have been habitable for longer," said scientist Michael Mumma, one of the author's on the NASA paper.

Heroes Defy Cops, Sled on Capitol Hill
The ban on sledding on Capitol Hill dates back to 1876 but it hasn't stopped bands of patriots from using their God-given right to pursue happiness. Twitter accounts show D.C. residents resorting to civil disobedience and taking advantage of yet more snow. D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton asked the Capitol Police to "have a heart" in a letter. "This could be the last snowstorm the D.C. area gets this winter, and may be one of the best for sledding in years. Children and their parents should be able to enjoy sledding on one of the best hills in the city." Sen. Harry Reid co-signed Norton's letter in a tweet but it was not enough to persuade Capitol Police, who cited liability issues. No word if the cops are trying to stop sledders yet.

Liberia Discharges Last Ebola Patient
Liberia's last-known Ebola patient was discharged from a hospital Thursday. The release of Betrice Yardolo, who tested negative for the virus this week, brings the number of Ebola cases down to zero. Yardolo lost two sons and a daughter to Ebola, some of the thousands of victims in West Africa. Although Liberia celebrated Yardolo's release, officials were still issuing warnings, and the country is still weeks away from being declared Ebola-free. "We are still cautioning people. We told them they must still protect their villages, their towns," said Tolbert Nyenswah, the Liberian deputy health minister who oversaw the Ebola response. "But, it's exciting, man."

Harper Lee to Reporter: Go Away!
Harper Lee isn't exactly a sweet old lady. The beloved author of To Kill a Mockingbird and the upcoming Go Set a Watchman likes her privacy and made that very well-known to an intrepid reporter in Alabama. "Go away!" Lee simply and directly wrote to Connor Sheets, a reporter for AL.com, after he reached out to her via mail after trying to contact her, her lawyer, and her publisher multiple times. "I received an envelope without a return address, made out to 'Conner Sheets.' I opened it without fanfare, only to find my letter, wrinkled and refolded, with four words and one punctuation mark scrawled in cursive Sharpie at the bottom: 'Go Away! Harper Lee,'" wrote Sheets.

World Press Photo Prize Revoked
The World Press Photo contest organizers have revoked the prize awarded to Italian photographer Giovanni Troilo, who judges said misrepresented the location of an image in his 10-photo series The Dark Heart of Europe. The photo in question showed Troilo's cousin having sex with a woman in the back seat of a car. Critics argue that the photo was staged because Troilo used a remote-control flash. "The World Press Photo Contest must be based on trust in the photographers who enter their work and in their professional ethics," said Lars Boering, World Press Photo managing director. "We now have a clear case of misleading information and this changes the way the story is perceived. A rule has now been broken, and a line has been crossed."
