Construction alert: U District Station

March 12, 2015

U District: Late night work on Tuesday, March 17 to pour concrete for the light rail station foundation

Crews building the U District Station are planning to work into the late evening hours on Tuesday, March 17, to pour concrete for a section of the light rail station foundation (weather permitting).

Crews will be pouring the concrete inside the light rail station construction wall approximately 30 feet below ground. Due to the amount of concrete that needs to be poured, crews will need to work extended hours to perform this work. The City of Seattle has approved a temporary noise variance for this activity. Crews expect to complete the work around midnight. No high impact noise activities for this operation (such as jackhammering) are scheduled to take place after 5 p.m.

What to expect:

  • Concrete trucks entering the site from Northeast 43rd Street at the alley just west of University Way NE. Flaggers will escort the trucks onsite upon arrival.
  • Noise from the concrete trucks, pump truck, forklift, and crane.
  • Lights to illuminate the work area.

'SNL' could help Hillary win (if she runs, that is)

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Middlebrow
By Lauren Duca
Middlebrow is a recap of the week in entertainment, celebrity and television news that provides a comprehensive look at the state of pop culture. From the rock bottom to highfalutin, Middlebrow is your accessible guidebook to the world of entertainment. Sign up to receive it in your inbox here.

"Can SNL’s Kate McKinnon hurt Hillary?" reads the headline on Asawin Suebsaeng's recent piece for The Daily Beast. He describes McKinnon's impression of Clinton, the focus of the show's latest cold open, as "brutal," writing that it "paints the former Secretary of State as deranged, power-mad and wholly insincere."

Watch the sketch, if you haven't, so we can parse this one out together:

Firstly, "power-mad"? The woman wants to be president. Obviously, she welcomes power. Secondly, wait, what is "power-mad"? In asserting that this could be a problem for Clinton, Suebsaeng rests on a valid point: "Saturday Night Live" impacts the mainstream impression of political figures. The careful mixing of comedy and facts result in a brand of truthiness that has a very real effect on reputation. He points to Sarah Palin as an example, lest we forget, she never said that thing about being able to see Russia from her house.

But McKinnon's impression might lend itself to a positive influence. The Hillary we see here is unabashedly self-aware. "It's my time," she announces, weighing the potential competition of Elizabeth Warren. The comedy of McKinnon's version of Clinton comes from her dizzying excitement over the idea of a presidential campaign. She weighs the thought of (possibly) attaining the nation's highest office -- "Who knows?!" -- in a way that is delightful to watch, and might actually make people like Clinton more.

If anything, this over-the-top parody of a potential candidate eases the sexist double standards surrounding female ambition (apparently also known as being "power-mad"). And even if this were as damaging as Suebsaeng sees it, Clinton is a veteran political figure. Good or bad, at this point, "SNL" cannot wholly shape our perception. Clinton's reputation has been in the process of being formed since she entered the national stage in the 1990s. By contrast, Palin's meteoric rise went hand-in-hand with parody; Alaska's former governor will forever be associated with Tina Fey in a sensible blazer.

3915mid2

Though, "SNL" is no stranger to impressions of Clinton. She even appeared opposite Amy Poehler's version of herself back in 2008 -- an appearance which likely contributed to an uptick in her favorability. And Clinton is no fool. If McKinnon keeps at it (and let's hope she does), the former secretary of state will likely send her a private thank-you email as a joke in the coming weeks.

The purpose of comedy is to subvert. That's the mode of the genre, and "SNL" has consistently taken aim at politics and pop culture, but it's not Clinton's personality that's the show lampoons. Instead, McKinnon's impression is an absurdist rendering of the problematic discomfort of seeing a woman in power. It refashions the "bitchiness" associated with her political ambition as exuberant aspiration, without shying away from Clinton's unflinching nature. Perhaps Fey said it best on Weekend Update in 2008: "Maybe what bothers me the most is that people say that Hillary is a bitch. Let me say something about that: Yeah, she is. And so am I. ... Know what? Bitches get stuff done."

HUFFPOST HILL - Secret Service Agents Really Glad Dark Sunglasses Hide Bloodshot Eyes

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 02:09 PM PDT

HuffPost Hill
Americans are wary of the way Benjamin Netanyahu and the GOP have handled U.S.-Israeli relations over the last several weeks, a development that could really hurt turnout for Bibi in Cuyahoga County. Republican staffers are doing their part to keep print media alive through Neo-Confederate publications. And two drunk Secret Service agents drove into a White House security barricade, disrupted a bomb investigation and, presumably, then stepped on a rake, slapping themselves with the handle. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, March 12th, 2015:

POLL: MORE AMERICANS DISAPPROVE OF GOP'S IRAN LETTER - For a country that can't stop communicating through inappropriate 5-second photos, we sure do retain some sense of decency about correspondences. Ariel Edwards-Levy: "Americans are more likely than not to say it was inappropriate for GOP senators to send an open letter to Iranian leaders, a new HuffPost/YouGov poll finds. Forty-seven Republican senators signed the letter spearheaded by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), which warned Iranian officials that they will consider any nuclear deal a nonbinding "executive agreement" that could be revoked by future presidents or modified by Congress. Democrats and the White House criticized the letter, saying it undermined the United States' foreign policy. Secretary of State John Kerry told members of Congress he was in 'utter disbelief' over the letter, which he called inaccurate and irresponsible.Nearly 60 percent of Americans have heard at least something about the open letter, and 42 percent say it was inappropriate, while 28 percent find it appropriate and the remainder aren't sure -- a divide similar to views on the invitation for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak to Congress, which 47 percent of Americans said was inappropriate." [HuffPost]

Today in unfavorable Aaron Schock news.

NETANYAHU CAMPAIGNING OFF OF JOINT ADDRESS - That's funny, so are our politicians! Jessica Schulberg and Grim: "Already, however, Netanyahu is using his speech as a prop in a campaign commercial back in Israel, where the prime minister is shown basking in the applause of members of Congress who did not boycott his speech. With five days left until the Israeli elections, Netanyahu launched the 80-second campaign ad, featuring his controversial address along with footage of rockets being launched. Netanyahu's speech sparked controversy in Israel as well, where his political opponents filed a petition to the Israel Broadcasting Authority claiming that the speech to Congress violated election propaganda rules. Israeli Supreme Court Justice Salim Joubran ruled that the speech would be broadcast domestically on a five-second delay to allow editors to take out propagandistic content. Current polls project Netanyahu's Likud Party to secure three fewer Parliament seats than the Zionist Union, led by Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni." [HuffPost]

HuffPost Haircuts: Ryan Grim, Dave Jamieson, Neil Irwin.

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Aaron Davis reports on a D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute study finding that the rent is too damn high. "The report concludes that the nation's capital has almost no apartments left on the open market that rent for less than $800 a month. The number of such units nearly matches the city's stock of public and heavily subsidized housing, the institute found, meaning that, in effect, only those receiving public assistance are renting for less than $800 a month." EPIC SECRET SERVICE BLOOPER - Carol Leonnig and Peter Hermann: "Two Secret Service agents suspected of driving under the influence and striking a White House security barricade disrupted an active bomb investigation and may have driven over the suspicious package itself, according to current and former government officials familiar with the incident." [WashPost]

FLORIDA LOVES BANNING 'CLIMATE CHANGE' - Florida man caught stuffing bags of Cheetos into Members Only jacket while not wearing pants at local 7-11 engaging in climate misinformation campaign. Amanda Terkel: "Florida's ban on using the words 'climate change' and 'global warming' in official communications goes beyond just the state's Department of Environmental Protection to other government agencies under Gov. Rick Scott (R), according to a new report by the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting....Until last year, Bill Taylor was a manager at the Florida Department of Transportation's office in Fort Lauderdale. He said that at a meeting in 2012 or 2013 -- Scott took office in 2011 -- 'it was mentioned very casually that in our future dealings with the public, we were not to use the terms 'climate change' or 'global warming.' But it was OK to talk about sea-level rise, because for some projects that had to be taken into consideration.' A former employee at the South Florida Water Management District had a similar story. 'It was widely known that you couldn't put those words into a report,' the former employee told FCIR. 'They just wouldn't make it through the editing process.'" [HuffPost]

SO WHICH REPUBLICAN ADVISERS AREN'T NEO-CONFEDERATE SYMPATHIZERS? - And here we thought the discussions at Smith Point mostly revolved around Duke alumni gossip and where best to service one's Lexus. BuzzFeed: "Richard Quinn has been quoted in the press as South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham's longtime political adviser and his consultant and pollster. But there's another title that Quinn once held: neo-Confederate magazine editor. From early 1980s until the early 2000s, Quinn's name stood on the masthead as the editor-in-chief of the Southern Partisan, formerly one of the country's leading neo-Confederate magazines (it still exists in a barebones online version). Quinn has tried to distance himself from the magazine in the past (he says he doesn't like the term neo-Confederate), and after being contacted by BuzzFeed News, repudiated his past views and those of the magazine. It was in his capacity as editor that Quinn wrote that Martin Luther King Jr.'s role in the Civil Rights movement was 'to lead his people into a perpetual dependence on the welfare state, a terrible bondage of body and soul'” He called Nelson Mandela a 'terrorist' and a 'bad egg.' He wrote positively of David Duke's election: 'What better way to reject politics as usual than to elect a maverick like David Duke?' In one column, he called Martin Luther King Day's purpose 'vitriolic and profane.'" [BuzzFeed]

HUGH HEWITT WILL BE AN AWESOME DEBATE MODERATOR - Hewitt's like if Ezra Klein and Sheppard Smith had a baby and that baby was raised at the CATO Institute. Michael Calderone: "When radio host Hugh Hewitt questions Republican candidates at CNN's first primary debate this fall, he says, viewers will be 'much more likely to hear about the Ohio-class submarine than contraceptives.' What, you ask at this point, is the Ohio-class submarine? 'The Ohio-class nuclear submarine is the biggest line item debate that will be held in the next 15 years,' Hewitt said in a Wednesday interview with The Huffington Post. 'Presidential candidates ought to know about it. They ought to be up to speed on it. That tells me seriousness.' Hewitt, 59, has carved out a niche in the conservative talk radio world as Mr. Serious, an unapologetic wonk in an industry full of bombast. And he's ridden that reputation to fairly prominent heights lately, becoming perhaps the most important conservative media figure of the still-early 2016 election cycle. Virtually all the prospective candidates have sat down for an interview with Hewitt. And Hewitt, in turn, has set intellectual bars that they must clear. Guests can expect to get into the nitty-gritty of foreign and domestic policy issues -- and they know to come prepared, lest they be embarrassed on air. Often, they leave with homework." [HuffPost]

The internet will not have bottle service: "The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday released the full text of its net neutrality rules, detailing how the agency plans to ensure the Internet remains free and open...The order released today will reclassify consumer broadband as a utility under Title II of the Communications Act, giving the FCC the authority to issue strong, 'bright line' rules against practices such as blocking lawful content and paid prioritization. The rules will also extend to mobile access." [HuffPost's Dana Liebelson]

RUDY GIULIANI AND DONALD TRUMP SHOULD START A PR FIRM - "Let No Such Thing Public Relations tell your story in an inflammatory a way as humanly possible." Daily News: "Just when you thought Rudy Giuliani couldn't get crazier, the former NYC mayor blamed Obama for the brutal beatdown at a Brooklyn McDonalds — and said the president should be more like Bill Cosby. Obama is ignoring 'enormous amounts of crime” committed by African-Americans, Giuliani said Thursday. And he said President Obama is to blame for the brawl inside a McDonald's in Brooklyn as well as the shooting of two cops in Ferguson because of the anti-police 'tone' coming from the White House. The former mayor, speaking on AM970 radio this morning, was asked what he thought about a number of disturbing issues in the news. Host John Gambling asked for Giuliani's take on the vicious McDonald's fight, the recent police shootings in Ferguson and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton getting booed Thursday at a City Council hearing by protesters." [Daily News]

BECAUSE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR - Here's an otter buying snacks.

C'MON, FOX - Not that we'd expect anything else. Politico: "The Fox News morning program 'Fox & Friends' sought to link Attorney General Eric Holder to the recent shooting of two police officers in Ferguson, Missouri, on Thursday -- a move that seemed to reinforce critics' worst suspicions about the network's biases. 'New #Ferguson violence comes just one week after AG Holder vowed to dismantle the city's PD. Is this what he meant?' read the Fox & Friends tweet, a reference to Holder's claim that he would consider dismantling the police department "if that's what's necessary" to ensure the elimination of 'racial bias.'" #TBT: Raising a kind daughter

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 02:02 PM PDT

This week's featured post from our archive is by blogger Kari Kubiszyn Kampakis.

The Secret To Raising A Kind Daughter

annie and ella

When my daughter Ella was in fourth grade, she got in the car one day after school and announced her plan to run for student council.

At her school each class has a representative, and I was thrilled she planned to put her name in the hat. Even if she didn't win, it would be a good experience.

She told me almost every girl in her class was running, as well as one or two boys. As kindly as possible, I mentioned the boys might have an advantage since the girl votes could be split, as that can happen in elections. I told Ella I was proud of her for putting herself out there, and that she'd make a great representative if elected.

The next day after school, Ella mentioned a dilemma she and her friend Annie had "figured out." On Friday all candidates had to give a speech. Since our family was going to the beach Friday, Ella wouldn't be there to give hers.

"But Annie had a great idea," Ella said, referencing one of her best friends, who was in Ella's class that year. "She suggested that I do a video speech, and she'll play it for everyone."

I was very touched by this suggestion from Annie. Why? Because Annie was running against Ella for student council. Yet instead of treating Ella like a competitor, she treated her like a friend.

Ella's teacher agreed to the video speech, so we made it and sent it on. I didn't think much more about the election until Friday afternoon around 3 p.m., when I was soaking up an ocean view of the Gulf Coast and received an email from Ella's teacher. She had great news: Ella had won the election! Her classmates had voted her onto student council.

Our family hugged and congratulated Ella. I could tell by the shy smile on her face what her peers' vote of confidence meant to her. About ten minutes later, my cell phone rang. It was Annie's mom (one of my close friends) calling us from her cell.

"We are so thrilled about Ella!" she said, her voice joyful and triumphant. "It was the first thing Annie told me when she got in the car! She's sooooo excited! We couldn't be happier if it happened to her!"

The phone call didn't surprise me, because that was typical for this family. What caught me off-guard was the timing of the call. These were 10-year-olds, after all, and 10-year-old emotions can be fragile. Their automatic instinct isn't always happiness for a friend who got something they wanted, too. Had the tables been turned, I'm not sure the call would have happened so fast. We may have had to work through a little disappointment -- if even for a minute -- before focusing on our friend.

But to Annie and her mom, a victory for Annie's best friend was a victory for Annie. A win for one was a win for both. If you ask me, that's the perfect illustration of true friendship. It's how it should work at every level.

All four of my girls have found friends similar to Annie. While no friendship is perfect, I've been surprised by some of the kindness I've seen at young ages. They know how to look out for a friend. They get it. And can I tell you what their kind friends all have in common? Kind mothers. Time and time again, I've become friends with the moms I meet through my children's beloved friends because they're good souls. I don't think it's a coincidence their children are, too.

We all want to raise kind daughters. We want them to be good friends and have good friends. While I give Annie full credit for supporting Ella -- she suggested the video, after all, and was quick to celebrate her win -- I know she didn't pull that mindset out of thin air. She picked it up from her family because that's how they think.

A win for a friend is a win for both.

Kindness among young girls doesn't start on the playground or in the locker room -- it starts at home. Most notably, it starts with kind mothers raising kind daughters. Our girls see how we treat our friends. They also notice how we treat their friends.

If we treat their friends as competitors, our daughters will, too. If we love their friends like we love our own children, they're more likely to see them as sisters and part of the family.

Keep in mind it wasn't just Annie cheering when Ella won student council. It was Annie's mom, too. She was just as enthusiastic. Can I tell you what that meant to me? Can you imagine the trust that added to our relationship?

Quite honestly, I think it's rare for both a mother and daughter to instinctively rejoice as these two did. Then again, maybe it just proves the point.

We moms rub off on our girls. Over time our way of thinking becomes their way of thinking. If we want to raise kind daughters, we need to start by being kind mothers.

Meet the GOP's New Kingmaker

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 01:42 PM PDT

The Clinton controversy has lived to see another day.

If you are reading this, at some point you opted to receive regular updates from HuffPost Media. We've been quiet for a while, but today we are launching Media Debrief, a run-down of the day's top industry news and opinion. Each weekday we'll tell you what insiders in the media industry are talking about, thinking about and reading. Suggestions or tips? Email us.

THE NUTGRAF

Republican presidential hopefuls have long courted conservative media's top dogs -- Rush, Drudge and Hannity. Now there's another name on the list: Hugh Hewitt. The 59-year-old conservative radio host has been around for a while, but only recently has he begun to get mainstream attention by appearing on "Meet the Press" and landing a role in CNN's first primary debate. GOP contenders have since flocked to his radio show; in just the past two months, a dozen potential candidates have made appearances (yes, that includes Donald Trump, but also legit, first-tier contenders like Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio). An unabashed wonk, Hewitt is sure to pepper candidates with detailed policy questions. But he also likes to ask first-time guests if they've read The Looming Tower and whether they think Alger Hiss was a Soviet spy. Hewitt sees his role as challenging GOP candidates to take positions on key issues, without taking the gotcha route. "If I wanted to wound Republicans, I could do so," Hewitt told HuffPost. "Not many of them are going to show up on the show anymore."

— Michael Calderone (@mlcalderone)

PULLQUOTE

I worry about whether or not we're going to be well served by a beltway press corps that doesn't know how to talk about either Bill or Hillary Clinton without treading into real nonsense.”

— Rachel Maddow on the Clinton e-mail controversy

TOP STORIES

Hugh Hewitt Wants A 'Serious' GOP Primary

Hewitt, 59, has carved out a niche in the conservative talk radio world as Mr. Serious, an unapologetic wonk in an industry full of bombast. And he's ridden that reputation to fairly prominent heights lately, becoming perhaps the most important conservative media figure of the still-early 2016 election cycle. Read more.

Rachel Maddow Calls Media Coverage Of Hillary Clinton 'Nonsense'

Maddow characterized the media's coverage of Clinton's problem, which now includes a lawsuit filed by the Associated Press against the State Department, as "scrum" and "stupidity." Read more.

O'Reilly has said on his radio show that he witnessed "firefight" in El Salvador during the war, adding that he saw "guerrillas all over the place" and "people just shooting everywhere." Lawmaker Gave Away Adopted Daughters
Arkansas State Rep. Justin Harris said he "rehomed" two girls who suffered from reactive attachment disorder just six months after he adopted them out of fear that he would face abandonment charges. A Christian preschool teacher then got custody and was later arrested for allegedly raping one of them, a 6-year-old. A former babysitter for the Harris family told the Arkansas Times that one of the girls was kept isolated from the family for hours and monitored by video camera because the Harrises said they believed the girls were telepathic and possessed by demons. The Harrises deny the claim, saying that demons are not a part of their religious beliefs.

ISIS Accepts Boko Haram's Offer
ISIS has accepted Boko Haram's pledge of allegiance in a video messages. With the Boko Haram alliance, ISIS comes a step closer to the global expansion of its self-proclaimed caliphate beyond the Middle East. The two groups have been in talks for months, as The Daily Beast first reported. About a dozen other terrorist groups have already sworn allegiance to ISIS.

Cops Were 'Ambushed' at Ferguson Protest
Two police officers were shot by unknown assailants during protests in Ferguson, Missouri on Wednesday night in what St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar called an "ambush." A 41-year-old officer from St. Louis County was shot in the shoulder and a 32-year-old officer from Webster Groves was shot in the face. Both are expected to survive. In a press conference Thursday, Belmar said three or four shots were fired from across the street where protesters and police were gathered, though the shots did not come from among the protesters. Detectives are exploring possible leads. Protesters gathered across the street from Ferguson police headquarters just hours after Chief Tom Jackson resigned. In a statement, Attorney General Eric Holder condemned the shootings, writing in part, "This heinous assault on two brave law-enforcement officers was inexcusable and repugnant. I condemn any violence against any public safety officials in the strongest terms, and the Department of Justice will never accept any threats or violence directed at those who serve and protect our communities."

Hillary Didn't Use State Dept BlackBerry
Hillary Clinton did not use a State Department-issued BlackBerry device during her tenure, according to spokeswoman Jen Psaki. "Secretary Clinton… was not issued a State Department BlackBerry," she said Thursday, adding that it was a private sevice. Clinton said she did not use a State Department email account because she could not have both a personal and official State Department email on a single device. Psaki confirmed this was the case, though the policy changed in 2014. Clinton's BlackBerry, at the very least, would not have been given extensive security measures like those on President Obama's special BlackBerry, which was built with the help of the National Security Agency. In fact, the NSA wouldn't even confirm that the phone could send texts or emails.

Iran Supreme Leader Slams GOP Letter
Iran's supreme leader called Republican senators' letter to Tehran the "ultimate degree of the collapse of political ethics and the U.S. system's internal disintegration." According to Iran's news agency, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei noted that the GOP's insistence that any deal struck by President Obama could be null and void when he leaves office is a sign of America's "tricks and deceits." Khamenei has the final say over decisions in Iran, especially about its nuclear program. "Of course I am worried, because the other side is known for opacity, deceit, and backstabbing," he said.

200+ Albino-Killing Witch Doctors Caught
Tanzania arrested more than 200 witch doctors and traditional healers for killing albino people. The UN estimates that close to 80 albino people have been killed in Tanzania since 2000. Just a few weeks ago, a 1-year-old albino was killed in the northwestern region of the country. The witch doctors are fueled by the belief that the body parts of albino people have special powers to bring wealth and good fortune. According to the Red Cross, witch doctors will pay as much as $75,000 for a "complete set of albino body parts—including all four limbs, genitals, ears, tongue, and nose." In January, Tanzania banned witch doctors from practicing in response to the albino killings.

Madonna: Reporting Rape Wasn't Worth It
In a recent interview with Howard Stern, Madonna opened up about her tumultuous first year in New York City, when she said she was raped by a man who lent her money for a payphone. "I was going to a dance class and the door was locked and I needed money for the payphone," she said. "[A man] gave it to me… he was a very friendly guy. I trusted everybody." The man allegedly persuaded Madonna to use a phone from across the street where he lived. "I was raped," she said. When Stern asked whether she ever pressed charges, she said she didn't. "You've already been violated," she said. "It's just not worth it. It's too much humiliation."

NASA Suspects Ocean Under Saturn's Moon
NASA reports that its Cassini spacecraft provided "the first clear evidence" that one of Saturn's moons, Enceladus, may be the site of "hydrothermal activity" similar to that beneath Earth's oceans. "These findings add to the possibility that Enceladus, which contains a subsurface ocean and displays remarkable geologic activity, could contain environments suitable for living organisms," astronaut John Grunsfeld said. "The locations in our solar system where extreme environments occur in which life might exist may bring us closer to answering the question: Are we alone in the universe?"

Today's Story Highlights

Samsung Offers Free Milk to All
Samsung has opened its Milk Music streaming music service to anyone via
a Web browser, one year after introducing it on its mobile devices. "In
a word, why?" questioned Mike Goodman, director of digital media at
Strategy Analytics. "There's Pandora, there's Spotify, there's Google
Music Play ... . They're offering a lot of the same things everybody
else is offering."

The Apple Watch Will Take Its Own Sweet Time
The wearable technology marketplace is already in place and growing.
Now, enter the Apple Watch. Although it will speed up growth, this new
space will be very different from the iPhone and iPad markets. Large
companies like Google, Samsung and Sony, and smaller companies like
FitBit and others have already thrown their hats into the ring and seen
limited success.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/81812.html

Google Casts Nearline to Lure Cloud Customers
Google on Wednesday launched Nearline Storage, the latest addition to
the Google Cloud Platform. Nearline seeks to reel in enterprises to the
wider Google Cloud Platform with the promise of low-cost, low-latency
storage for limitless amounts of data. Nearline has all of the benefits
of offline, or "cold," storage, but the data it houses is available in a
matter of seconds instead of hours.

Google Roars Onto Auto Insurance Turf
Google last week launched an auto insurance rate comparison site in
California. Mercury Insurance, MetLife and 21st Century Insurance are
among the 14 firms already signed up as partners, and Google promises
more will follow. Bolt Solutions last week announced that it too has
joined up. "We have a Google Compare agreement with Google," said Bolt
spokesperson Chrissy Snyder.

Proposed 2016 Federal Budget Plumps IT Spending by $2B
The U.S. government will increase IT spending for the third year in a
row, if the Obama administration's proposed 2016 fiscal year budget
passes. The 2016 budget request includes civilian agency IT spending at
$49.1 billion and defense IT expenditures at $37.3 billion. The 2016
total of $86.4 billion is about $2 billion more than for 2015, and it is
more than double the amount spent in 2001.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/81805.html

Record Systems as Deal Savers
Transaction systems have all the fun but systems of record do all of the
work; at least it seems that way. Maybe you've never thought of it this
way but unless both kinds of systems are working well -- and working
together -- your results will suffer. Record systems can tell you what
happened, but by themselves they don't bring in business.

Square Reshapes Itself for Small Businesses
Square on Monday introduced two new services for small businesses:
instant deposits; and protection for disputed purchases. Square, which
six years ago began offering square-shaped mobile credit card readers
for smartphones and tablets, has shifted its focus away from point-of-
sale operations and toward data collection. The company processes
millions of credit card swipes daily.

Today's Story Highlights

New MacBook: Computing Rethought
The Apple Watch may have dominated Apple's Spring Forward event earlier
this week, but an unexpected new MacBook could herald the future of
mobile computing. It will be available April 10. Thinness, lightness and
tomorrow's technology are its salient features. Its 12-inch Retina
display is 0.88 mm thick, and the MacBook itself is 24 percent thinner
than the 11-inch MacBook Air.

Security Experts Rap Clinton's Email Practices
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in hot water over her use
of a private email server to handle emails for official business. The
practice was very risky cybersecurity behavior for everyone involved,
critics have alleged. In taking her mail outside the State Department's
systems, Clinton appears to have turned up her nose at the agency's
rules.

Evolve OS Is a Clean and Light Work in Progress
Evolve OS Beta 1 needs considerable fine-tuning to get to release
candidate status, but it has two innovations that distinguish it from
the crowd of Linux distro newcomers. This new arrival is built around a
home-made desktop called "Budgie" and a custom package manager forked
from Pardus Linux. I am always interested in new desktop approaches.
That's what drew my attention to Evolve OS.

What Mobile World Congress Delivered Besides Same-Old Smartphones
The latest handsets and tablets received their share of headlines at
this year's MWC, but their mindshare shrank considerably. Sony unveiled
its Xperia Z4 tablet, possibly its last hurrah in the mobile space.
Meanwhile, Samsung's Galaxy S6 smartphone stole the spotlight. However,
with more than 2,000 tech organizations promoting their wares and
services, MWC 2015 offered a fresh set of promises.
