Nighttime closure of westbound SR 520 rescheduled for tonight, Tuesday Jan. 10; full closure planned for the weekend of Jan. 27-30
Banner Image

UPDATE: Nighttime westbound SR 520 closure tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 10

Yesterday's cold temperatures and rain caused planned Monday night concrete pours to be postponed. Crews now plan to close all westbound SR 520 lanes and ramps between 92nd Avenue Northeast and Montlake Boulevard and the bicycle/pedestrian path along the floating bridge from:

  • 11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Please note that from 9 to 11 p.m. Tuesday and 5 to 6 a.m. Wednesday, crews will funnel westbound traffic down to one lane on the floating bridge for preparation and cleanup of concrete pours.

Late-night and early-morning travelers should plan to take I-90 or drive around Lake Washington if heading to Seattle from the Eastside.

Weather this time of year makes it a bit tricky to confirm our work schedules in advance but we will continue to send updates as soon as we can to let you know of any changes in scheduled closure dates.

All closure information is also kept up to date on our SR 520 Orange Page, and you can receive the most up-to-date closure notifications by following our SR 520 Twitter feed.

Full closure of SR 520 planned for the weekend of Jan. 27-30

Crews are continuing to work on removal of the old westbound SR 520 off-ramp that extends over the highway near Montlake. So far they have removed five of eight girders – the steel beams that support the bridge's roadway – with three more girders scheduled to be removed by the end of the month. To safely complete this work, crews plan to close all lanes and ramps of SR 520, as well as the new floating bridge's bicycle/pedestrian path, between 92nd Avenue Northeast and Montlake Boulevard from:

  • 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30.

We will send further reminders and information about this closure in coming weeks.

Project updates: Out with the old, in with the New Year

Pontoons being towed by tugboats on Lake Washington

Floating bridge

If you have not yet had the chance, check out the history in motion on Lake Washington. Only three of 31 old floating bridge pontoons are still floating near their old residence, and later this week, each of these 53-year-old pontoons will be escorted from Lake Washington via the Lake Washington Ship Canal before passing through the Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks. Once through the locks, the pontoons are turned over to a third-party wholesaler for reuse.

Over the next few days, the following old floating bridge pontoons will take their final voyage:

  • Pontoon Z is planned to depart at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11.
  • Pontoon B is planned to depart at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12.
  • Pontoon N (with the lift-span) is planned to depart Saturday, Jan. 14.

If you are interested in seeing the final float-outs, you can track the accompanying tugboats Terilyn and Mudcat using a boat-tracker app or website such as MarineTraffic, and watch the float-outs from these suggested viewing locations

Departure timings and tugboats are subject to change; please follow the SR 520 Twitter account for the most up-to-date float-out information.

West Approach Bridge North girders

West Approach Bridge North

No need for a gym! Only one week into the new year, the West Approach Bridge North (WABN) is already making big changes in its physique. On Thursday Jan. 5, crews installed the 353rd girder – marking the completion of all girder installation for the final WABN structure.

With this final girder in place and more than 50 percent of the roadway deck placed, crews will begin taking down the temporary, wooden work bridge they worked from while building the WABN foundation. Crews will continue construction from the new WABN structure as they work to complete the new bridge by this summer.

The inauguration of Donald Trump is just 10 days away, and the transition rumbles on–with his attorney general nominee's Senate confirmation hearing today, and not without a critique from Secretary of State John Kerry over a lack of progress toward the changeover at the State Department.

Where Trump's presidency begins, another ends; President Obama will make his farewell speech from Chicago at 9 p.m. ET today. –Emily Banks

Trump's Cabinet
As he seeks to become President-elect Donald Trump's attorney general, U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions, an especially conservative Republican from Alabama, emphatically rejected decades-old charges of racism. He also said he would recuse himself from any investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or the Clinton Foundation. "We can never have a political dispute turn into a criminal dispute," Sessions said Tuesday at his confirmation hearing, which was interrupted several times by protesters.

Switzerland just had the worst month for skiing in 100 years. An ultra-dry December marred the start of the ski season in the mountainous heart of Europe, which draws millions expecting Instagram-ready white peaks and pretty villages. A colder January is improving conditions, but the unpredictable early winter weather cut ticket sales at resorts and confounded holiday planning.

Some tech companies are trying affirmative action hiring–just don't call it that. In the two years since tech giants revealed that most of their employees were white and Asian men, their diversity has only increased a few percentage points–or, in some cases, dropped. Many companies' first response was to make the hiring process more "blind," but now they're going further, setting hiring goals and rewarding recruiters for "diversity hires," for instance.

Duck boots and politics don't mix. L.L. Sessions Grilled on Trump’s Muslim Ban

Posted: 10 Jan 2017 12:57 PM PST

During his confirmation hearing to become President-elect Donald Trump's first attorney general, Sen. Jeff Sessions on Tuesday said he does not support a blanket ban on Muslims entering the United States. After saying he would be willing to tell Trump "no" and not be the president's "mere rubber stamp," Sessions answered questions on whether he would support a ban on Muslim immigration, as the president-elect has proposed. "I have no belief and do not support the idea that Muslims as a religious groups should be denied admission to the United States," he said, noting, however, that Trump has clarified his position to be that the U.S. should restrict immigration from Muslim countries that allegedly support terrorism. At another point, Sessions said he would be ready to recuse himself from any further investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server, considering his active role in a Trump campaign that repeatedly used "lock her up" as a mantra against their rival.

2. MAKE AMERICA SICK AGAIN
RFK Jr. Will Head Trump Vaccine Panel
President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday met with Robert Kennedy Jr. According to incoming White House press secretary Sean Spicer, the pair met to discuss "issues pertaining to vaccines and immunizations," and following their discussion, Kennedy told reporters that the president-elect asked him to "chair a commission on vaccination safety and scientific integrity," and that he agreed to the role. Kennedy, the eldest son of the late Sen. Robert Kennedy, has long argued that certain vaccines may cause autism—a claim not supported by scientific evidence and widely viewed as a conspiracy theory. Trump, too, has argued the same. Before running for president, in March 2014, he wrote on Twitter: "Healthy young child goes to doctor, gets pumped with massive shot of many vaccines, doesn't feel good and changes - AUTISM. Many such cases!"

Comey: Russia Also Hacked Republicans
During a Senate intelligence hearing on the Russian hacks, FBI Director James Comey stated that there was successful penetration of GOP groups and campaigns and of some old RNC domains. "There was evidence of hacking directed at state-level organizations, state-level campaigns, and the RNC, but old domains of the RNC, meaning old emails they weren't using," he said. "None of that was released." The FBI chief further added that there was no clear sign "that the Trump campaign or the current RNC was successfully hacked." He also stated that the hackers "got far deeper and wider into the DNC than the RNC," and that "similar techniques were used in both cases."

Trump to GOP: Replace ACA 'Quickly'
President-elect Donald J. Trump on Tuesday urged Republicans to immediately repeal the Affordable Care Act—President Obama's signature legislation—and replace it as "quickly" as possible. "We have to get to business," he said, according to The New York Times. "Obamacare has been a catastrophic event." The president-elect's urging comes in contradiction to many Republican lawmakers, who either prefer to repeal the law and take time to negotiate a replacement, or, prefer to wait for that replacement before voting on a repeal. He further told the Times that the vote should happen "probably some time next week," and that "the replace will be very quickly or simultaneously, very shortly thereafter." He added of the current law: "It's a catastrophic event. I feel that repeal and replace have to be together, for very simply, I think that the Democrats should want to fix Obamacare. They cannot live with it, and they have to go together."

5. BACK AT IT AGAIN
Fox Settled O'Reilly Harassment Claims
Fox News secretly settled a sexual harassment lawsuit against Bill O'Reilly. The allegations arose in the wake of multiple claims about similar behavior on the part of former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes, who has since been ousted. O'Reilly allegedly pursued a sexual relationship with Juliet Huddy, a former employee, in 2011. At the time, he reportedly exerted influence over her career, and he retaliated against her when she rebuffed his advances. LawNewz.com and The New York Times both obtained a draft of a letter from her lawyers related to the case. According to the document, on specific occasions, he apparently called her while masturbating. Huddy was allegedly paid a high sum in exchange for her silence. O'Reilly and the company both denied her claims. This isn't the first time O'Reilly has been involved in a sexual-harassment suit with fellow employees. In 2004, one of his producers, Andrea Mackris, sued him, alleging he made unwanted sexual advances and lewd comments over the phone and during dinner meetings. The firebrand host eventually settled for millions of dollars, according to reports.

6. WORD THIEF
Crowley's Book Pulled for Plagiarism
HarperCollins on Tuesday said that it will pull Monica Crowley's book from shelves until it can make proper revisions after CNN found more than 50 instances of plagiarism. The long-time Fox News conservative commentator was picked by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council. Her 2012 book, titled, What the (Bleep) Just Happened, directly copied text from other columnists, articles, think tank reports, and news stories, CNN reported this past weekend. In a statement, the publisher said, "The book, which has reached the end of its natural sales cycle, will no longer be offered for purchase until such time as the author has the opportunity to source and revise the material." Crowley has yet to comment on the entire ordeal, but on Saturday a Trump spokesperson defended her, telling CNN that "Any attempt to discredit Monica is nothing more than a politically motivated attack that seeks to distract from the real issues facing this country."

18 Sue Gymnastics Doctor Over Sex Abuse
Another eighteen girls and women have filed a suit on Tuesday against former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, claiming that no one even attempted to stop him when he molested patients. Three other organizations are named in the suits against the 53-year-old disgraced physician. Nassar is facing child-porn charges and criminal sexual abuse charges. Only one of the alleged victims used their own names in the suit. Rachael Denhollander consented to her name appearing on legal forms in her complaint, which was filed in Michigan federal court. She gave interviews to NBC News last fall. She was a 15-year-old club athlete when Nassar treated her in 2000. Denhollander, who was the first woman to come forward, claims she was abused during five visits.

Protesters Disrupt Sessions Hearing
During the confirmation hearing for Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, President-elect Donald Trump's choice for U.S. attorney general, protesters shouted and interrupted the proceedings. "No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist USA," many demonstrators in the room yelled Tuesday morning before they were escorted out. Others held signs that said "End Racism—Stop Sessions." The proceedings continued despite the interruptions. Several civil-rights organizations have expressed outrage that Trump chose Sessions for the role, including the NAACP and the ACLU. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund in particular pointed out that Sessions has a "decades-long record—from his early days as a prosecutor to his present role as a senator—of opposing civil rights and equality." Sessions, when asked how feels when people call him racist, said: "Well, it does not feel good."

Coldplay to Do Israel-Palestine Concert
Coldplay has announced it will perform two concerts in an effort to boost peace efforts between Israel and Palestine, Israeli media reports. The British rock band will play near the Dead Sea at outdoor venues, identified so far only as "agricultural areas." The concerts will take place on Nov. 3 and 4. They are intended to promote human rights and coexistence, according to media reports. Other musicians have played in Israel, including Leonard Cohen and Roger Waters, of Pink Floyd. Coldplay, though, would be the largest musical group to attempt such a peace show in the area. The band will sell 50,000 tickets for the two dates.

Litvinenko Suspects on Sanctions List
Two men among five new names on a U.S. sanctions list against Russia are the suspects believed to have carried out the London polonium poisoning of Kremlin foe Alexander Litvinenko in 2006. Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun are just two of the 44 Russians that President Obama has ordered censured before he leaves the White House in 10 days. Litvinenko died of radiation poisoning. A U.K. inquiry determined that Litvinenko, a former Russian spy, was most likely killed at the personal order of President Vladimir Putin. The people named in the U.S. sanctions are banned from traveling to the States and have had any assets within the country frozen.

iPhone at 10: The Best Is Yet to Come?
It seems like yesterday -- not 10 years ago -- that Steve Jobs took the
stage at MacWorld to debut Apple's latest new gadget: the iPhone. The
iPhone was three devices in one, he declared. It was a widescreen iPod
with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a breakthrough
Internet communications device. The iPhone went on to become a critical
contributor to the company's success.

CES 2017's Magic
CES was a fascinating show this year. One of the things that made it so
fascinating was that everyone and their brother had cars demonstrating
one form of technology or another. It kind of makes me wonder what we'll
see at the next car show -- PCs, drones, tablets and smartphones? That
wasn't the only surprise at the show, though. Nvidia, long thought of as
living in Intel's shadow, broke out.

Min Browser Muffles the Web's Noise
Min is a Web browser with a minimal design that provides speedy
operation with simple features. When it comes to software design,
"minimal" does not mean low functionality or undeveloped potential. If
you like minimal distraction tools for your text editor and note-taking
applications, that same comfort appeal is evident in the Min browser. I
mostly use Google Chrome, Chromium and Firefox on my desktops and laptop
computers.

Las Vegas Captures Ransomware Crown
Las Vegas is arguably the gambling capital of the world, but it's also
the king city for ransomware, based on recent research. Among the
world's nations, the United States ranked highest in ransomware
incidents, according to a Malwarebytes report on the prevalence and
distribution of extortion apps. The area of the country that logged the
most incidents was the Las Vegas-Henderson, Nevada, region.
