Transit Alert - Ride transit to the Seahawks game and other events this weekend

Posted: 01 Dec 2016 03:32 PM PST

Transit service in Metro's service area will be affect by reroutes or delays caused by multiple holiday and other events this weekend, including possible citizens rallies and Sunday's Seahawks game.  Regular transit riders and fans should be prepared for crowds, traffic and likely delays in and near affected event areas, and allow plenty of time for trips to and from or in the vicinity of games, events or other destinations.

Transit service for the Seahawks game on Sunday, December 4
Riding regularly scheduled transit service on any game day, or park and ride shuttle service when it is available on weekends, is the easiest way to get to and from Seahawks games.

While Metro operates Seahawks weekend game day non-stop shuttle bus service from the Eastgate P&RNorthgate Transit Center and South Kirkland P&R, fans are also encouraged to ride regularly scheduled transit service from these or other locations.

Seahawks P&R Shuttles leave each of the three parking areas 2 hours prior to kick off time as they fill, with the last bus leaving about 30 minutes before kickoff.

A cash-only, exact fare of $4 one way or $8 round trip per person is required on Seahawks P&R shuttles. No ORCA cards, passes or transfers are accepted.  A valid regular fare is required on all other regularly scheduled Metro service.

Pre-game shuttles arrive near CenturyLink Field on 5th Av S at S Weller St.

After the game, buses returning to Eastgate and South Kirkland leave from southbound on 5th Av S at S Weller St, and the Northgate Shuttle leaves northbound on 5th Av S from just north of S Weller St.

The last bus leaves 45 minutes after the end of the game.

Other planned weekend events
The Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition in and around Westlake Center on Friday evening will require some buses to be rerouted and may cause traffic delays in downtown Seattle; during the weekend other buses will have minor reroutes due to holiday events in West Seattle, Bothell and Auburn; there are reroutes or potential delays around several area construction sites.

Start and end times of reroutes due to events or construction are subject to change.

Unscheduled events
In areas where there are crowds, traffic or unscheduled events, transit riders are advised to be aware of conditions in their immediate vicinity – such as street closures, detours, police directions, etc. - and be prepared for delays or to make revisions to travel plans – such as using a different bus stop or a different route - based on specific circumstances.

Additional information Visit Metro Online for complete transit information.

Visit Metro's Service Advisories page for information about revised bus service, routing and stops for planned events.

Visit Metro's online regional trip planner to plan your travel, and for bus stop, schedule and other information, including predicted times at stops.

Visit the King County Water Taxi site for information about regular and holiday Water Taxi operation.

Visit the Community TransitPierce TransitSound Transit or Washington State Ferries websites for complete information about services provided by Metro's regional transit partners.

Carrier Gets $7M Tax Credit in Trump Deal

Posted: 01 Dec 2016 01:07 PM PST

Carrier Corp.'s parent company, United Technologies Corp., will receive $7 million in tax breaks from the state of Indiana over a period of 10 years, according to a report. The deal, which was negotiated and championed by President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence, is contingent upon Carrier keeping 1,000 jobs in the U.S. Trump and Pence are expected to speak on the agreement later Thursday. Trump has been criticized from across the political spectrum for intervening, with many accusing the president-elect of employing cronyist tactics to give special treatment to certain private companies and industries. Additionally, as Bloomberg noted, even though Trump claims this as a jobs victory, Carrier will still move 1,300 jobs to Mexico.

Report: Christie Wants to Be RNC Chair
Chris Christie has expressed to President-elect Donald Trump his interest in the job of Republican National Committee chairman, Politico reported on Thursday. The New Jersey governor reportedly told senior members of the Trump transition team that he would like the gig, three sources told the D.C.-based news outlet. Christie became a prominent Trump surrogate following his own exit from the GOP primary, but their relationship took a public tumble last month when the governor was replaced by Vice President-elect Mike Pence as the lead transition official. The conviction of several of his New Jersey allies in the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal seemingly further tainted his chances of attaining a high-level role in the Trump administration.

3. THERE'S MORE?
Weiner Fined for Misusing Campaign Money
Disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner used campaign money from his 2013 New York City mayoral bid for personal expenses, according to the city's Campaign Finance Board. The board found ten violations of campaign finance laws, including $1,539 used for phone and dry cleaning bills. Other violations include not specifying in-depth reasons for different expenses. Weiner will pay nearly $65,000 in fines. Weiner is under FBI investigation for allegedly sexting an underage girl, and has been repeatedly found to have sexted women who are not his wife, Huma Abedin, who separated from him earlier this year. Weiner recently checked into rehab for a sex addiction.

Warren Backs Scott Brown for VA Sec
Elizabeth Warren on Thursday offered an endorsement of her one-time senate opponent Scott Brown for the position of secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. According to multiple reports, Brown—whom Warren unseated in Massachusetts' 2012 Senate race—is being considered for the position, alongside former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. In an interview with Boston radio station WGBH, the outspoken liberal senator said, "If Scott Brown is the nominee for Veterans Affairs, I have no doubt that he would put his heart and soul into trying to help veterans." She added: "And I would put my heart and soul into trying to help him do that. You bet I'd support that." Brown later thanked Warren for her praise, tweeting, "My thanks to @SenWarren for her kind words. If nom. for SecVA, I will welcome her support, passion and help to serve our Vets. #truce."

Hollande Not Seeking Re-Election
French President Francois Hollande said Thursday he will not seek re-election. Hollande, whose approval rating often lags in the single digits, was expected to face an uphill battle to win another term in office. 6. MORE TO REMEMBER
Four New Names Added to Periodic Table
Four new names have been added to the periodic table of elements, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) announced Thursday. Nihonium, Moscovium, Tennessine, and Oganesson are now elements 113, 115, 117, and 118, respectively, on the official periodic table. The new elements were first synthesized between 2002, but only in December 2015 did IUPAC officially recognize the discoveries as chemical elements. The suggested names were then submitted by the scientists this June.Nihonium, abbreviated Nh, was submitted by Japanese researchers and comes from 'Nihon,' the Japanese word for Japan. Moscovium (Mc) and Tennessine (Ts) were named by a team of scientists from Russia and the U.S., while Oganesson (Og) was named for nuclear physicist and prolific element discoverer, Yuri Oganessian, by the Russian team that discovered the element.

Harper Lee's lawyer has announced plans to turn the deceased author's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, into a tourist destination involving her writings. The project may roll out as early as March, with attorney Tonya Carter and paper mill magnate George Landegger at the helm. The various attractions will be part of the "Harper Lee Trail," with the aim of annually attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists to the town. The plans include the refurbishment of a 1909 building that will become a museum dedicated to the To Kill a Mockingbird author. Three homes featured in the film version of the book will be replicated as part of the project. The trail will take years to complete, according to the Mockingbird Company, the nonprofit founded by Lee in 2015.

California Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday appointed Rep. Xavier Becerra to be the state's next attorney general. Becerra will replace Kamala Harris, who was just elected to the U.S. Senate. "Governor Brown has presented me with an opportunity I cannot refuse—to serve as Attorney General of my home state," Becerra said in a statement. Brown has represented Los Angeles in the House of Representatives since 1993. He previously served in the California State Assembly and was deputy attorney general in the state from 1987 to 1990.

9. A YEAR LATER
Xmas Decor Enraged San Bernardino Killer
Police officials in San Bernardino, California, said they believe Syed Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik opened fire on Farook's fellow county employees because they were unhappy that he had to attend a mandatory training session in a room with holiday decorations, including a Christmas tree. "She had essentially made the statement in an online account that she didn't think that a Muslim should have to participate in a non-Muslim holiday or event," San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan told ABC News. "That really is one over the very, very few pieces of potential evidence that we have that we can truly point to and say, 'That probably is a motive in this case.'" ABC News also obtained a photo of Farook posing with his colleagues in front of a Christmas tree in the moments before the shooting began.

Hillary's Popular-Vote Lead Passes 2.5M
Hillary Clinton's popular-vote lead over Donald Trump has now surpassed 2.5 million votes, giving her a nearly 2 percentage-point lead over the president-elect. Clinton's lead over Trump has grown in the days following the election as remaining votes were tallied in Democratic strongholds across the country. Trump won the Electoral College with 306 votes to Clinton's 232, largely buoyed by his wins in traditionally Democratic states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

Between Earth and an asteroid armageddon

Good afternoon and happy December.

Web of Conflicts
Donald Trump's sprawling business ties at home and abroad raise questions about how his personal interests could influence the policies he'll pursue as president. Where he has business interests abroad, his stock portfolio, his debts and ongoing government action against him and his companies have already complicated the transition and could be a recurring problem for his presidency.
Here are today's top stories...

Every day could be "asteroid day" for NASA's planetary defense officer, the man who stands between Earth and an asteroid armageddon. Lindley Johnson, the founding head of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, oversees a network of ground-based telescope surveys for new asteroids to prepare for the unlikely event of a direct hit.

There may be incest in big-time college football officiating. Do officials paid by the top NCAA conferences slant their calls, even if only unconsciously, to help their employers' top teams? New research suggests the answer is yes.

November was a massive month for markets around the world. It marked one of the most decisive shifts for global financial markets in recent years, with a bevy of asset classes—from bank stocks, emerging-market bonds to hard commodities—staging sharp price swings in the space of a mere three weeks.

Robo-adviser Betterment has picked up steam with its pitch to handle 401(k) plans for companies. Betterment for Business, which began signing up corporate clients in January, has more than 300 companies on board, with plan assets ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to more than $25 million.

How do couples handle money? Bloomberg Businessweek had conversations about love, trust, and splitting the check with seven couples of different backgrounds and income levels from around the U.S.

And look like a peanut
The Johammer J1 is a cruiser like no other. Designed and built in a small Austrian factory near the Czech border, its distinctive shape has been likened to that of a giant peanut, a prewar Junkers airplane, or even a medieval jousting steed. The outrageous design seems more at home in the living room than the garage.

The California Department of Insurance this week announced fines totaling $7 million against startup Zenefits, a provider of cloud-based human resources services.

Beware of Wildly Inconsistent Online Shopping Rules
Before you sit down at your kitchen table and lose money shopping for
Christmas and holiday gifts, you'd be well advised to learn the rules of
the online shopping road. They can be very different from one vendor to
another, so shop carefully. Some companies do a great job with customer

Samsung Floats Possibility of Split
Samsung has announced road map for a corporate restructuring that might
include splitting itself into two. The company has retained external
advisors to review the optimal corporate structure for its activities.
The review is expected to take six months. Depending on the findings,
Samsung may create a holding company structure and might list its shares
on additional international exchanges.

China's Business-Unfriendly Cybersecurity Stance
China's parliament earlier this month passed a law aimed at addressing
the country's concerns about hacking and terrorism, which has spiked
concerns among foreign businesses and human rights advocates. One
interpretation of the new law is that it only codifies China's existing
cybersecurity practices. However, 46 global business groups across a
variety of industries didn't see it that way.
