The Taylor Swift of Situps
The Bikini Body Cult of Kayla Itsines
The three basketball courts in New York's Pier 36 recreational complex are packed with 4,000 women huffing and grunting their way to fitter bodies, their coordinated athleisure outfits soaked with sweat, their formerly coifed ponytails glued to the backs of their glistening necks. They're following the instructions of Kayla Itsines, the 25-year-old personal trainer from Adelaide, Australia, whose Bikini Body Guide (aka BBG) fitness program has become not just a workout but a way of life for many of them.

Do You Own Your Own Fingerprints?

These days our fingerprints unlock our smartphones, and companies are experimenting with more novel biometric markers—voice, heartbeat, grip—as ID for banking and other transactions. But there are almost no laws in place to control how companies use such information. Nor is it clear what rights people have to protect scans of their retinas or the contours of their face from cataloging by the private sector.

In the gamut of things Microsoft has had to apologize for lately, including a racist chatbot and sexy dancers, this might be one of the strangest: The company sent an e-mail inviting interns to a party that begins: "Hey Bae Intern!'' and gets worse from there, offering "lots of dranks'' and the ability to "get lit on a Monday night.'' Target's Future Will Be Decided by Kids

Anybody who's been around young families knows that parents solicit their kids' opinions about all kinds of once-adult decisions: where to go for dinner, what kind of car to buy, even what to wear. In keeping with the times, Target's designers have been listening to kids, too, about 1,000 of them from the ages of 4 to 12—in their homes, online, at daylong fairs, and in focus groups—to create what could become one of the company's biggest brands and maybe one of the country's biggest kids' brands.

Obama ‘Deeply Troubled’ by Cop Shootings

Posted: 07 Jul 2016 01:25 PM PDT

President Obama released a statement Thursday saying he was "deeply troubled" by the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, both of whom were shot and killed by police officers this week. "We've seen such tragedies far too many times, and our hearts go out to the families and communities who've suffered such a painful loss," Obama's statement reads. "Although I am constrained in commenting on the particular facts of these cases, I am encouraged that the U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil-rights investigation in Baton Rouge, and I have full confidence in their professionalism and their ability to conduct a thoughtful, thorough, and fair inquiry."

2. DEBUNKED
Comey: Petraeus Wasn't Punished for Less
FBI Director James Comey rejected the idea that Gen. David Petraeus was prosecuted for "far less" of a crime than what Hillary Clinton did with her private email server. "His conduct, to me, illustrates the categories of behavior that mark the prosecutions that are actually brought—clearly intentional conduct, knew what he was doing was a violation of the law," Comey said Thursday during a U.S. House hearing. "Huge amounts of information that, even if you couldn't prove he knew it, it raises the inference that he did it. An effort to obstruct justice." He ultimately concluded that those factors made it "worthy" of a misdemeanor prosecution. Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump often brings up Petraeus as an example of why Clinton should be prosecuted for crimes that are "much worse," in his view.

Report: Police Using Flawed Drug Test
A drug test that costs just $2 and often produces false positives has routinely been used by police officers and prosecutors to lock up suspected drug users, according to a report. ProPublica found that many police officers simply misinterpret the "ambiguous" instructions for the drug test, often leading to false positives. Specifically, ProPublica confirmed that several major cities accept guilty plea deals on the sole basis of the flawed drug tests: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newark, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Seattle and Tampa.

Kushner Family Blasts His Trump Defense
Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law and a close adviser to his presidential campaign, is under fire from his own family for his defense of the presumptive Republican nominee following a controversial Twitter post that was viewed as anti-Semitic. Some relatives are unhappy in particular that Kushner invoked his grandparents' Holocaust survival story. "I have a different takeaway from my grandparents' experience in the war," Kushner's cousin Marc wrote on Facebook. "It is our responsibility as the next generation to speak up against hate. Anti-Semitism or otherwise." Another cousin said in a different post that invoking their grandparents' tale was "a shame," and "self-serving and disgusting."

Firefighter Probed for Baton Rouge Posts
A Washington, D.C. firefighter is under investigation for inflammatory Facebook posts he wrote targeting protesters and "racist cops" after the fatal police shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. "Protesting is a lost cause and it makes us al look like a bunch a [derogatory term]. These evil [expletives] don't have any compassion," Norman Brooks wrote in a post obtained by Fox 5. "They are gonna let them PIGS go free and probably start a gofundme and make em millionaires." In another post, Brooks said people should "take the law in their own hands and target racist cops." The posts were later deleted, according to Fox 5. Brooks, who has been with the D.C. Fire and EMS Department since 2007, has been placed on "administrative duty" while an investigation is conducted.

"Regarding Ailes' claims that Gretchen's allegations are false, we challenge him to deny, under oath, that he made the statements attributed to him in the complaint," Carlson's lawyers wrote in a statement posted to her Facebook page. In response to Carlson's lawsuit alleging "pervasive" sexual harassment on the part of Ailes and her former colleague Steve Doocy, Ailes fired back with a blistering statement calling the accusations "offensive" and "wholly without merit." The lawyers also challenged Ailes' claim that Carlson's rating were poor, prompting her termination.

FBI: Guccifer Didn't Hack Hil Server
A Romanian computer hacker now in U.S. custody lied when he claimed to have accessed the private email server of Hillary Clinton, the director of the FBI told Congress on Thursday. The bureau interviewed the hacker, known as Guccifer, as part of its investigation into Clinton's email use. He "admitted that was a lie," Director James Comey said of Guccifer's claims, which he made in an interview with Fox News in May.Guccifer did, however, access the email of Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal, Comey confirmed. Earlier this week, without mentioning Blumenthal by name, Comey told reporters that "it is possible that hostile actors" accessed Clinton's email account, in part because they had "gained access to the private commercial email accounts of people with whom Secretary Clinton was in regular contact from her personal account." Blumenthal and Clinton were in regular contact about matters of sensitive foreign policy and national security, according to emails that have been released by Guccifer, whose real name is Marcel Lazăr Lehel, and through lawsuits seeking information about Clinton's email system.—Shane Harris

Philando Castile died after a police officer shot him in a vehicle with Reynolds and her 4-year-old daughter. "They told me he was at Regions Hospital," Reynolds said. "When I got to Regions Hospital, he was not there. He was at HCMC." When reporters asked her why she livestreamed the aftermath, she said, "I wanted everyone in the world to know." She added, "I didn't do it for pity, I didn't do it for fame .. They killed him, and he's never coming back."

Sidewalk Labs: Taking It to the Streets in Columbus
Alphabet's Sidewalk Labs, a sister company of Google, recently began
negotiating a plan to help restructure the public transportation system
in Columbus, Ohio, after the city won the Obama administration's
national competition to ease traffic gridlock issues. Sidewalk Labs will
leverage its cloud-based transportation data to help Columbus implement
a smarter public bus and parking system.

HummingBad Mucks Up Android's Works
More than 85 million Android devices worldwide have been taken over by
the Yingmob, a group of China-based cybercriminals who created the
HummingBad malware, according to Check Point. HummingBad establishes a
persistent rootkit on Android devices, generates fraudulent ad revenue,
and installs additional fraudulent apps. HummingBad reportedly has been
generating revenue of $300,000 a month.

Apple and Donate Life America have partnered to offer an organ donation

up to make organ, eye or tissue donations, automatically entering their

Blogosphere Chews on Android Nougat
Google last week revealed the official name of its next mobile operating
system: "Android Nougat." The OS previously went only by "Android N,"
and Google invited the blogosphere to fill in the blanks. The choice
sparked some derision, particularly among those who had preferred
"Nutella." "What is nougat anyway?" asked John Jackson, a research VP at
IDC. "It's like the 'nog' in eggnog; it doesn't exactly stand alone."

Symantec Scrambles to Fix Flaws After Google Sounds Alarm
Symantec last week confirmed that it had developed fixes for a series of
eight vulnerabilities found in its portfolio of security products for
enterprise and consumer customers, after an outside researcher
identified the problem. A researcher from Google's Project Zero alerted
the company, but there was no evidence of the vulnerability being
exploited in the wild.

What If We've Got Big Data and Analytics All Wrong?
Every once in a while I run into a little company that comes at an
existing market as if the folks already in it are idiots -- and
sometimes they are right. Here's the thing: What often happens is a
company breaks out in a segment, and everyone groups around that
company's ideas and emulates them. Few initially stand up and say, "Wait
a minute -- what if they're wrong?"

I don't think any product range beats speakers for running the design
gamut from gorgeous to ghastly. There are so many to choose from, in all
shapes, sizes and colors, that there's something for everyone -- plus a
few things no one should buy. But what if your sound system were a piece
of art, literally? Case of Bass has created a boombox print that houses
a speaker system in a shadow box.

power boost to 4,500 watts.
