Transit Alert – Metro and Sound Transit bus service will be affected by multiple Seafair and community weekend events

During the weekend of Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24, some Metro and Sound Transit bus service will be affected by street closures or traffic congestion associated with Seafair and community events and activities throughout Metro's service area.

Events with planned transit service reroutes include the Float Dodger 5K Run and West Seattle Grand Parade, the Renton River Days Parade and the Des Moines Waterland Parade, all on Saturday; the Chinatown Seafair Parade and Swedish Seafair Triathlon in the Leschi and Seward Park neighborhoods on Sunday, and weekly farmers' markets in Auburn, Magnolia and West Seattle.

There are many events for which there are no planned reroutes, but which may cause buses to be delayed due to traffic or crowds in their respective areas, including the Capitol Hill Block Party on East Pike Street, and events in Des Moines, Kirkland, Pioneer Square, Renton, SODO and West Seattle.

Visit Metro's Service Advisories page for specific reroute information. If your route is not listed, there is no planned reroute for it, however any service can experience delays due to all the different events and affected areas. Unplanned reroutes can occur without notice due to unexpected traffic volumes or other unpredictable circumstances. All Seattle-area transit riders should allow plenty of travel time and be prepared for possible delays, especially when traveling through or near event areas.

Riding transit is a good way to get to area events and celebrations. Even when buses are rerouted, they usually still get close to event venues in their service areas. Sign up for Transit Alerts and get the Puget Sound Trip Planner app.

During Seafair and other events, transit service may be delayed or rerouted due to street closures or traffic. All Seattle area transit riders should allow for possible delays. Check the Alerts page on Metro Online, sign up for Transit Alerts, use the regularly published schedule for your route and the Puget Sound Trip Planner smart phone apps, then allow plenty of travel time and be prepared for delays.

Update: Please note the rock blasting closure planned for Thursday, July 28 is rescheduled for Wednesday, July 27 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Weekend delays across Vantage Bridge, rock blasting closure next week on I-90 Snoqualmie Pass

Although crews won't be working this weekend on Interstate 90 from Snoqualmie Pass to Vantage, drivers will experience delays eastbound over the Vantage Bridge. The Washington State Department of Transportation is advising drivers to be prepared and allow for added travel time.

Next week, WSDOT and contractor crews will close I-90 at 8 p.m. for about an hour on Wednesday, July 27 for rock blasting. During rock blasting closures eastbound drivers will be stopped at milepost 56 near Gold Creek and westbound drivers will be stopped at milepost 62 near the Stampede Pass interchange. Construction related impacts due to lane closures and detours through multiple work zones will cause delays next week from the summit of Snoqualmie Pass to Vantage.

SR 520 Program News of the Week

Regional Shared Use Path Opened Today

Bicycle and pedestrian path now open on new SR 520 floating bridge

The regional shared-use path along State Route 520 opened today (July 22) on the new floating bridge, giving pedestrians and bicyclists a new route for promenading or pedaling to the middle of Lake Washington. But take note: we're still rebuilding the highway corridor from east to west, and the new trail won't connect to Seattle until the West Approach Bridge North is completed in summer 2017. Until then, casual bicyclists, morning joggers and restless kids can enjoy only an out-and-back excursion from Medina to the bridge's west end.

SR 520's 14-foot-wide path is 4 feet wider than I-90's cross-lake bike path, and is separated from traffic by sturdy barriers and a 10-foot shoulder on the adjacent roadway. The new path also features belvederes, or rest stops, which provide benches, interpretive signage and panoramic views of Lake Washington.

The new SR 520 shared-used path opened in early 2015 between 108th Avenue Northeast in Bellevue and Evergreen Point Road in Medina. Eventually, the path, with connections to local shared-use trails, will extend from downtown Redmond to I-5 in Seattle.

The new path's low-wattage lighting on the floating bridge will be turned on nightly, beginning Friday. This webpage provides more information about pedestrian and bicycling improvements on SR 520.

Heads up: Nighttime closures of westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard from July 25-28

The westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard will be closed for three consecutive nights next week as crews install handrails along the pedestrian path connecting the bus stop to Montlake Boulevard. The closures are needed to position equipment necessary for handrail installation and ensure traveler safety. During this closure, buses that typically use the westbound SR 520 off-ramp will be re-routed. The bus stop on westbound SR 520 will remain open. Early morning and late night transit riders should check the Metro alerts website for details about possible route changes.

While crews are installing handrail on the pedestrian path, it will still be open to transit riders. Please use caution as you are using this path and watch for spotters who will help you navigate around construction activities.

Full closures of westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard:

Monday, July 25 – Thursday morning, July 28
Nightly closures from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

At least eight people were killed and scores were injured in an attack believed to have been carried out by three different gunmen at the Olympia shopping center. Report: MH370 Pilot Planned Suicide Path

Before his plane disappeared in March 2014, pilot of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 used a home flight simulator to plan a suicide route, New York magazine reports. Less than a month before the MH370 crash, Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah used Microsoft Flight Simulator X to plot a route over the Indian Ocean that would cause the plane to run out of fuel and crash into the water. Investigators believe the flight crashed under similar circumstances. A Democratic National Committee staffer suggested using Sen. Bernie Sanders' faith as a talking point against him, leaked DNC emails reveal. David Duke: I'm Running for Senate

David Duke, the former leader of the Ku Klux Klan, has announced he will run for U.S. Senate in Louisiana. "I believe in equal rights for all and respect for all Americans," the ex-Grand Wizard said in a Friday morning video announcement. "What makes me different is that I also demand respect for the rights and the heritage of European Americans." Duke says thousands of special-interest groups stand up for the rights of African Americans and Mexican Americans—but none stand up for white people. "The fact is that European Americans need at least one man in the United States Senate, one man in the United States Congress, who will defend their rights and heritage." The Daily Beast first reported 10 days ago that Duke planned to run for U.S. Congress.

Trump Revives Rafael Cruz JFK Connection

Donald Trump on Friday revived the conspiracy theory he previously peddled during the GOP primary—that Ted Cruz's father Rafael was connected to President John F. Kennedy's assassin. Speaking at a post-convention rally in Cleveland, Trump said Cruz "never denied" that his father was pictured by The National Enquirer at breakfast with Lee Harvey Oswald three months before he is said to have shot and killed JFK. "I had nothing to do with it," Trump said of the conspiracy theory gaining national traction. "This was a magazine that, frankly, in many respects, should be very respected."

Weekend delays across Vantage Bridge, rock blasting closure next week on I-90 Snoqualmie Pass

Next week, WSDOT and contractor crews will close I-90 at 8 p.m. for about an hour on Thursday, July 28 for rock blasting. During rock blasting closures eastbound drivers will be stopped at milepost 56 near Gold Creek and westbound drivers will be stopped at milepost 62 near the Stampede Pass interchange. Construction related impacts due to lane closures and detours through multiple work zones will cause delays next week from the summit of Snoqualmie Pass to Vantage.
