Today's Story Highlights

Oculus Riles Users Over Piracy Block That Fails Anyway
It took a hacker just a day to come up with a workaround for the
platform update Oculus released last week, which blocked users from
running the company's games on rival virtual reality systems. Version
1.4 of the Oculus App blocked a hack from LibreVR called "Revive" that
allowed users to play Oculus games on rival systems, including the HTC
Vive and Valve.

Yahoo Bids Could Seriously Underwhelm
Bids for Yahoo's core assets were expected to come in at between $2
billion and $3 billion, far below prior estimates that it could fetch $4
billion to $8 billion at auction, according to a news report published
last week. Verizon, which remains the leading candidate for Yahoo's
assets, and other contenders met with CEO Marissa Mayer at the company's
Sunnyvale, California, headquarters

New SF Store Showcases Apple's Trademark Creativity
Apple last week opened a San Francisco flagship store in the city's tony
Union Square shopping district. The store has a 42-foot-tall sliding
glass door and a 50-foot tall green wall and is powered by 100 percent
renewable energy. "We have a deep commitment to the cities we work in
and are aware of the importance that architecture plays in the
community," Apple's Jonathan Ive said.

Vendors Gain Congressional Support on IT Pricing
Selling information technology to the U.S. government is never easy, and
it's even harder when a vendor cannot highlight the qualitative
differences it believes separates its competencies from other providers
competing for the same work. Yet a major contracting tool federal
agencies use in seeking IT products and services tends to smother those
differences in skills and competencies.

Deeper Connections
Salesforce held its Connections 2016 user event in Atlanta earlier this
month. About 7,000 people attended, but in the Georgia World Congress
Center and airplane hangar, attendance seemed smallish. Attendance might
have been held down by Gov. Nathan Deal's slow response to vetoing a
religious freedom law largely seen as discriminating against the LGBT
community.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/83538.html

Hacker Hawks 2-Year-Old Cache of 117M LinkedIn User IDs
A hacker reportedly has offered to sell the account information of 117
million LinkedIn users, which was stolen in a 2012 hack. The data
includes users' email addresses and passwords. The hacker, who goes by
the handle "Peace," reportedly offered the data on The Real Deal -- a
site on the dark web -- for 5 bitcoins -- about $2,200. LeakedSource
last week announced it had more than 167 million stolen records.

1. FIGHTING BACK
11 States Sue Feds over Bathroom Laws
Eleven states plan to sue the Obama administration over its recent directive mandating transgender access in public schools to bathrooms that correspond with their identified gender. The new rule was announced by the White House in response to a law enacted in North Carolina which said transgender individuals must use the public bathroom matching the gender listed on their birth certificate. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit include Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin, in addition to Maine Gov. Paul LePage and the Arizona Department of Education. The lawsuit alleges that the Obama administration "conspired to turn workplaces and educational settings across the country into laboratories for a massive social experiment, flouting the democratic process, and running roughshod over common sense policies protecting children and basic privacy rights."

2. WAR ON WOMEN
Nikki Haley Signs 20-Week Abortion Ban
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Wednesday signed into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which makes her state the 17th in the nation to impose a 20-week abortion ban. As The Daily Beast's Samantha Allen reported last week, the bill contains an exception for the life of the pregnant woman but not for rape or incest, and "is premised on the notion that fetuses can feel pain as early as 20 weeks. That same logic has been used to institute 20-week bans in several other states and, most recently, to require physicians in Utah to administer anesthesia during abortions performed after 20 weeks."

Trump Plans to Hit Hillary on Whitewater
Hope Hicks, spokeswoman for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, accidentally sent an email to a Politico reporter detailing the campaign's intention to dig up dirt on Hillary Clinton over the 1990s Whitewater controversy. The email was purportedly intended for the Republican National Committee and Michael Caputo, a Trump adviser, but Hicks accidentally copied Marc Caputo, a Politico reporter. The message, sent Wednesday morning, asked the RNC to "work up information on HRC/Whitewater as soon as possible. This is for immediate use and for the afternoon talking points process."

Couric Film Caught Deceptively Editing
The makers of Katie Couric's recent documentary on gun violence deceptively edited interviews with pro-gun activists, according to a Washington Free Beacon report Wednesday. At one point in the EPIX film, Under the Gun, Couric asks members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League: "If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?" After that question, the interviewees are shown awkwardly staring and looking down for nine seconds before the documentary moves on. Unedited audio of the segment obtained by the Free Beacon, however, shows the activists immediately chiming in to answer Couric's question.

5. OUT OF ORDER
Chaos Unfolds at Minnesota ISIS Trial
Tensions boiled over Wednesday during the trial of three Minneapolis-area men accused of attempting to join ISIS in Syria. According to several Minnesota Public Radio reporters in the room, Zahra Warsame, the sister of cooperating witness Abdirizak Warsame, allegedly had an outburst in court as her brother was set to take the stand—Zahra reportedly dated one of the defendants and was unhappy with being asked to support her brother. All three defendants were reportedly escorted out of the room as female marshals were summoned to restrain Zahra. After Burhan Mohumed, a friend of the defendants, arrived to break up the altercation, he was banned from the courthouse for the duration of the trial by Judge Michael J. Davis for refusing to identify himself and for having an "attitude." The federal case against Guled Omar, Abdirahman Daud, and Mohamed Farah for allegedly conspiring to support ISIS and murder people abroad has sharply divided the involved families, MPR reports.

6. CTRL + ALT + DEL
State Dept. IG Faults Hillary for Emails
A State Department inspector general's report to be released Wednesday found that Hillary Clinton's exclusive use of a private email account to conduct official business was "not an appropriate method" of preserving federal records. Clinton handed over her emails to the State Department almost two years after leaving her post as secretary of State, but the IG report said she should have either printed and saved her emails while she was in office, or turned over all of her work emails immediately after leaving the department. The report also states Clinton did not seek proper legal approval before she opted to use a private email server. Clinton's campaign team has said repeatedly that she was operating within the bounds of the law.In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon acknowledged widespread and long-standing issues with the department's electronic record-keeping, but did not mention many of the specific claims in the inspector general report."While political opponents of Hillary Clinton are sure to misrepresent this report for their own partisan purposes, in reality, the Inspector General documents just how consistent her email practices were with those of other Secretaries and senior officials at the State Department who also used a personal email," Fallon said.

7. RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY
Less Than 1% Chicago Arrestees Lawyered
Less than half of 1 percent of people arrested in Chicago in the past three years saw an attorney while in police custody, CNN reported Wednesday. The statistics were issued to the site by the city's police department and may indicate an infringement of citizens' legal rights. The news comes in the wake of a report issued last month that found "CPD generally provides phone access [to arrestees] only at the end of processing, after interrogation and charging" and "when individuals in custody attempt to invoke their legal rights to counsel, they report facing hostility from police."

Hacker 'Guccifer' Pleads Guilty in Court
The Romanian computer hacker that allegedly targeted former President George W. Bush's family and former Secretary of State Colin Powell pleaded guilty Wednesday to two charges in federal court. "Guccifer," whose legal name is Marcel Lehel Lazar, 44, hacked into the accounts and personal information of the nearly 100 victims. Lazar said this month that he hacked Hillary Clinton's private email server. It has not been corroborated by officials.

Judge Denies Gawker Motion for Retrial
Florida Judge Pamela Campbell on Wednesday denied Gawker Media's motion for a retrial in the Hulk Hogan sex-video case. She also ruled that she will not reduce the $140 million in damages the jury awarded the ex-pro wrestler in March. In a statement, lawyers for Hogan (né Terry Bollea) applauded the ruling in a statement: "Gawker has failed and continues to fail in recognizing their obligation to Bollea for their reprehensible behavior and method of doing what they call journalism. Their refusal to accept responsibility for their conduct and denial of the obvious continues to drive their litigation strategy."

10. ROUGH WEEK
Report: Dem Lawmakers Look to Drop DWS
Democrats in Congress are having serious discussions about replacing DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz before the party's convention in July, according to a report from The Hill. They are worried that Wasserman Schultz has become too much of a divisive figure within the party leadership, as she has alienated Bernie Sanders supporters who believe she is not being neutral in the Democratic primary contest. "There have been a lot of meetings over the past 48 hours about what color plate do we deliver Debbie Wasserman Schultz's head on," said an anonymous pro-Clinton Democratic senator. The Hill also quoted various other Democratic lawmakers on-the-record, who defended Wasserman Schultz.

Snapchat's Influencer Economy Runs on Hot Tubs, Selfies, and Whey Protein
On a Wednesday morning in April, Caitlin O'Connor spent a few hours wearing a black bikini and sitting in a hot tub, speaking into a cell phone camera to an audience of several hundred thousand followers on ArsenicTV's Snapchat channel. She wasn't paid. Instead, she was allowed to embed her social media handles on the video. "Girls want to do Arsenic because they're getting followers," she says. "That's the equity. In the long run, it means dollars." Welcome to the future.

Today's Top Stories

Number 01

You Worked Monday. Why Not Get Paid Monday?

Cash crunches often lead many people to pile up credit card debt, bounce checks, or turn to payday lenders, which charge high interest rates and fees for making loans against a paycheck. PayActiv is another option. For a transaction fee of $5, the service lets employees withdraw a portion of the money they earn, as they earn it, without waiting for a paycheck.

Number 02

Clinton E-Mail Use Violated Rules, Inspector General Finds

he Inspector General's report adds to Clinton's political woes as she's trying to wrap up the Democratic presidential nomination and campaign against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, who has used the e-mail controversy as part of his line of attack. In other political news, House Speaker Paul Ryan has begun telling confidants that he wants to end his standoff with Trump.

Number 03

Who Gets Venture Capital Funding?

Investors flooded startups with a record $63.3 billion in 2015. But a volatile stock market and fears of a tech bubble have led VC firms to make more cautious bets this year. So who is getting that sweet, sweet VC cash? Surprise: Dudes, mostly.

Number 04

Panama Canal Fever Sweeps Globe Again as New Era in Trade Nears

Nine years of construction and $5 billion later, the canal is about to open a third set of locks and deeper navigation channels. The crucial improvements will double the isthmus's capacity for carrying cargo between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Number 05

Adam Minter: Why Are So Many People Dying on Everest?

What keeps climbers stuck up there isn't bad weather, a natural disaster or even equipment failures. The problem is depressingly familiar: Too many people are trying to climb the world's tallest mountain and are contributing to deadly traffic congestion in the process.

OnePlus Offers Free Headsets to Lure Crowd to VR Smartphone Launch
The 30,000 virtual reality headsets OnePlus announced it would give away
as part the unveiling of its OnePlus 3 smartphone were snapped up
Monday, the day they became available. OnePlus has set up a VR space
called "The Loop" in which it will unveil the OnePlus 3. The Loop can be
accessed only by users of the OnePlus Loop VR headsets, made by AntVR.

Google's Abacus May Count Out Passwords
By the end of the year, Android devs will be able to use a trust API
from Google's Project Abacus in their apps, Google ATAP Director Dan
Kaufman suggested at last week's I/O conference. The API, which will run
in the background continually, is aimed at doing away with passwords. It
will use a smartphone's sensors to create a cumulative trust score that
will authenticate users.

Versatile iBot Wheelchair to Make a Comeback
Toyota and DEKA Research and Development last week announced an
agreement that will revive development of the iBot, a wheelchair that
can climb stairs. The companies revealed their pact to develop mobility
solutions for the disabled community at the annual convention of the
Paralyzed Veterans of America. One of the first initiatives under the
agreement will be to resurrect the iBot.

The Rise of Drone Racing, Part 1
Tearing through open spaces and timing each turn to burst out of them, a
seeming continuum of drones weaves through a set of obstacles lap after
lap, until the stutter of a pilot's joystick breaks the cadence of this
competitive concert and destroys the illusion. It's the drama --
anticipating and reacting to those human moments -- that has propelled
drone racing to the spotlight.

Rebellin Linux Offers Best of Both Gnome Worlds
Rebellin Linux is a smart-looking, fast distro that is both lightweight
and secure. It is well worth checking out. The Rebellin line avoids the
pitfalls that befall many Debian GNU/Linux derivatives. It does not
maintain a warehouse full of desktop versions. It is neither a
minimalistic Linux line nor a distro stuffed with bloat from packages
typical users will never need.

Microsoft Tightens Screws on Terrorists Posting Online
Microsoft last week announced plans to crack down on terrorist content,
perhaps in response to the Obama administration's intense effort to get
Silicon Valley's help in preventing organizations like ISIS from using
social media as a recruiting and fundraising tool. Microsoft has amended
its terms of use to prohibit the posting of terrorist content on its
various platforms.

Google's New Custom Chip May Not Live Up to the Hype
Google last week announced the Tensor Processing Unit, a custom
application-specific integrated circuit, at Google I/O. TPU was built
for machine learning applications and has been running in Google's data
centers for more than a year. Google's AlphaGo software, which thrashed
an 18-time international Go champion in a match earlier this year, ran
on servers using TPUs.

Using the Scientific Method to Pick the Best US President
I've been thinking a lot this week about what it takes to select a
strong CEO and being annoyed by robocalls from the different campaigns.
On one such call, when asked what I'd do if given the choice between
Clinton and Trump, my response was "move to Canada." That apparently
wasn't what they were looking for. Boards often have to select from a
very small pool of CEO candidates, and they don't get the "move to
Canada" option.
