| Transit Alert – Metro’s spring service changes begin Saturday, March 26 Posted: 25 Mar 2016 06:20 PM PDT On Saturday, March 26, Metro’s spring service changes begin. Metro’s service change revises bus service in several areas to provide reliable connections to Link light rail at the new Capitol Hill and University of Washington stations, and to provide current and new transit riders with many more commuting and travel opportunities to and from many more places. Additionally, in partnership with the City of Seattle, Metro’s RapidRide C Line will be extended to serve South Lake Union, and will no longer continue as the RapidRide D Line to Ballard. The RapidRide D Line from Ballard will be extended to serve Pioneer Square, and will no longer continue as the RapidRide C Line to West Seattle. Even if your bus service is not changing, you may want to take a fresh look at your commute.

North Cascades Highway Progress Report Week 1 –March 25, 2016 Hi all, The first week of clearing was a mixed bag. On the west side, the pavement is now cleared for the first 11 miles above the Diablo Gate to about milepost 145 (County Line Creek), which is about a dozen miles below Rainy Pass. The deepest snow (where there was any) didn’t get deeper than 2 feet so the plow truck was busier than the blower. Weather alternated from sunny to overcast, but not much snowall despite forecasts predicting more (for both sides of the passes). Highlights included finding and clearing a mudslide about four miles above the gate at milepost 138 (that ate up a day by itself), and the crew’s lunch time activities are once again being monitored by some large, black birds with a taste for potato chips! (Now you have a reason to check the flickR pictures). On the east side the plan for the week was to clear the 7 miles from the Early Winters information center (milepost 178) to the winter closure gate at Silver Star Creek (milepost 171). Note that Early Winters doesn’t have a gate, but usually sometime in January the snow gets too deep for a plow truck to get up to the gate and turn around and the barricades go up at Early Winters. That’s a disappointment for cross country skiers by adding 7 miles each way to a trip to Washington Pass which eliminates it as a day trip. Snowmobilers on the other hand, don’t seem to mind. There’s more parking and facilities at Early Winters than up at the gate. Despite finding snow 2 feet deep at the barricade, a substantial layer of ice frozen to the pavement and an equipment failure on the first day – by Thursday the highway was substantially cleared to Silver Star (2-1/2 snowblower boxes wide) but parking there will be a challenge as it’s barely a turnaround right now. Snow up to the gate is also 3-1/2 to 4 feet deep. The plan for next week is special in that the Eastern Region crew from Sherman Pass is coming over (with their Kodiak!) for a week or so of training and practice. (Sherman has snow, but no avalanche zones.) Next week also brings the avalanche crew up from Stevens with their snow cat and a rental D6 cat. They’ll be working ahead of the trainees and trainers carving avalanche dumps under Cutthroat Ridge down to snow blower size. (They can take about an 8 foot tall bite of the right snow).
