Academy Pledges to Be Less White
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday night voted for a series of changes that aim to increase the diversity of its board and membership. The move comes after the recent uproar over the lack of diversity in Oscar nominations – all actors and actresses nominated to the acting categories are white for the second year in a row. "The Board's goal is to commit to doubling the number of women and diverse members of the Academy by 2020," read a statement posted on the Academy's website.

Trevor Noah to Keynote Dem Retreat
The Daily Show host Trevor Noah will reportedly give a keynote address at the House Democratic Caucus issues retreat next week. The comedian will speak at the three-day event also headlined by President Obama, Vice President Biden, and labor leader Richard Trumka. According to Politico, "Democratic lawmakers use the retreat to settle on messages and polices for the upcoming year," which will likely pose a problem for The Daily Show, a show that has long prided itself on political independence.

Bill Cosby Defamation Suit Dismissed
A federal judge on Thursday dismissed the defamation suit against comedian Bill Cosby, filed by Renita Hill, one of the more than 50 women who have alleged that Cosby assaulted them. Hill sued Cosby for allegedly defaming her in the media, but Judge Arthur J. Schwab ruled that Cosby's statements—in which Cosby called for his accusers to be fact-checked—"do not support a claim for defamation as defined by Pennsylvania law."

'Black Sails' Should Be Your Next Show
The epic pirate series Black Sails returns Jan. 23 with more explosive action, awe-inspiring special effects, and a portrayal of history unlike anything you've ever seen. The show centers on the tales of Captain Flint and his men, taking place twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island. In this riveting new season, Flint, the most brilliant and feared pirate captain of his day, faces all out war with the British fleet for control of Nassau. Worse still, the notorious Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, has set his sights on the same waters. Can Flint and his crew, including the charismatic and quick-talking John Silver, prevail against two of the greatest threats they've ever faced? Will Nassau's pirates fall to the ultimate threat, one who knows them, understands them, and has the power to destroy everything they've fought for? All will be tested this season like never before, including the very bonds holding Flint and his crew together. Don't miss the season premiere Saturday, Jan. 23 at 9 p.m. only on STARZ.

KS Court Kills Wichita Pot Ordinance
Kansas Supreme Court unanimously ruled Friday to void a Wichita voter-approved ordinance reducing the penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana. The court said that the city ignored filing and disclosure rules that are mandated by state law in order to ensure that voters properly understand what they are voting on. Chief Justice Lawton Nuss wrote that voters were never "officially advised of the entirety" of the ordinance, which set fines at a maximum of $50 for first-time offenders possessing fewer than 1.1 ounces.

Wu-Tang Member: Shkreli Must Drop Album
Ghostface Killah thinks "shithead" pharmaceutical CEO Martin Shkreli should release the one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album to the people. Ghostface is a prominent member of Wu-Tang, the legendary rap group that sold the unique record, titled Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, to Shkreli for several million dollars earlier in 2015. Several months later, Shkreli launched to national infamy after he raised the price of AIDS drug Daraprim by 5000% percent, and then was arrested on securities fraud charges in December. "I don't even know him," Ghostface told TMZ. "But I know what he did with the AIDS [drug] like that, that's not right, that's not right." The rapper conceded that it's "out of [his] hands" whether Shkreli will release the coveted album.

Michael Caine: Be Patient, Black Actors
Michael Caine is the latest star actor to weigh in on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, telling a BBC reporter that black actors should "be patient." The 82-year-old Oscar-winner said: "You can't vote for an actor because he's black. You can't just say, 'I'm going to vote for him. He's not very good, but he's black. I'll vote for him.' You have to give a good performance." Caine added that he wasn't very aware of the nominees this year, inquiring aloud on the radio if Idris Elba, star of Beasts of No Nation, was nominated. "I saw Idris, and I thought he was wonderful. I thought he would get [nominated]. Did he not get nominated?" For the second year in a row, all 20 nominees up for acting awards are all white. "The great thing about it is you don't have to go," he noted for those who didn't get a nod.

Kansas Halts 2nd-Trimester Abortion Ban
The Kansas Court of Appeals on Friday ruled to halt the state's ban on a common second-trimester abortion method. The ban would have been the first of its kind nationwide. First enacted in 2015, the law would have kept doctors from using forceps on a live fetus in order to remove it in parts from a uterus. The Center for Reproductive Rights has called the method the safest and most common procedure to end second-trimester pregnancies. A lawsuit at the root of the ruling was filed by two abortion providers, who argued that the ban would be an unconstitutional burden on women seeking abortions. The appeals court decision was announced on the 43rd anniversary of landmark Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade.

Are We Headed for Recession?

Are We Headed for Recession?
With markets plunging globally, people who ordinarily ignore economic forecasters are eager for whatever intelligence they can glean. We're squatting on our 401(k) landing pages, refreshing as if we're trying to win free concert tickets. Sorry we don't have better news on this gloomy Friday, but nobody knows what's going to happen next.

Today's Top Stories

Number 01

Blizzard Set to Hit U.S. East Snarls Flights, Shuts Offices

A massive winter storm will bring snow by the foot to the U.S. mid-Atlantic. At least 50 million people are in its path and thousands of flights have already been cancelled. This weekend, the West Coast will undoubtedly be the best coast.

Number 02

New L.A. Stadium May Need Stealthy Design to Evade Airport Radar

Stadium architects normally want their buildings to stand out, but developers of a proposed stadium to house the NFL's return to Los Angeles may have to treat the glimmering venue like a stealth bomber. The problem? It's so close to Los Angeles International Airport's radar it could create a hazard for landing aircraft.

Number 03

A Scary New Superbug Gene Has Reached at Least 19 Countries

Researchers in China just two months ago identified a gene that can make bacteria resistant to a last-resort antibiotic called colistin. "Last resort" is no exaggeration; colistin is toxic and has some seriously harmful side effects, but it can help defeat infections that shrug off every other antibiotic. If bacteria resist colistin, you're out of luck—and that's why scientists are so alarmed the same resistant gene has now been detected in at least 19 countries.

Number 04

Google Paid Apple $1 Billion to Keep Search Bar on iPhone

Rumors about how much Google pays Apple to be on the iPhone have circulated for years, but the companies have never publicly disclosed it. A transcript of recent court proceedings from Oracle's copyright lawsuit against Google revealed the search engine giant has an agreement with Apple that gives the iPhone maker a percentage of the revenue Google generates through the Apple device. And they generate a lot of revenue.

Number 05

Trump or Cruz? No Sweat, Wall Street's Big Republican Donors Say

As the candidates that Wall Street backed with millions of dollars have stumbled and banks have become punching bags, financiers are wrapping their heads around what life with the New York billionaire or Texas senator in the Oval Office might look like for them. Some don't mind what they see, because despite what they say on the campaign trail, both men have enjoyed longstanding ties to business and finance.

Young Americans Are Turning Into $15-a-Bottle Wine Snobs
Each successive generation of wine drinkers in the U.S. has bought more expensive wine than the last since the 1960s. While the youngest generation of American drinkers are certainly price conscious, a proliferation of online wine content has made consumers more confident about their purchases. Hence, $15 Beaujolais is the new "Two Buck Chuck." Luckily, any wine pairs nicely with America's best baguette.
