John Russell Houser, the man who shot and killed two people in a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, in July was inspired by Charleston shooter Dylann Roof, according to police documents released Wednesday. "Thank you for the wake up call Dylann," he wrote. Houser killed two people at a screening of the film Trainwreck and wounded nine others before shooting himself. Police also discovered wigs and disguises in his motel room after the shooting took place.
NBC announced Wednesday that the network will broadcast a two-hour Friends reunion special in February. The show is meant to honor sitcom director James Burrows and will reunite casts from some of his other series, including Will and Grace, Frasier, and Cheers. The entire cast of Friends will return for the special.
Despite an early jump in murders and shootings in the new year, the Chicago Police Department's investigative stops are down 80 percent and fewer guns are being confiscated, DNA Info reports. Since Jan. 1, there have been 72 more shootings—a 218 percent increase—and 10 more murders than there were in the same time period during 2015. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in 2015 that officers had become "fetal" over fear that they would end up in newspapers or charged with a crime.
Armed militants occupying federal buildings in Oregon say they will announce their plan for vacating the structure at a Friday night community meeting. The protesters, who have refused to leave the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge for nearly two weeks, say they take issue with federal ownership of land in the area. The group is led by Ammon and Ryan Bundy, sons of notorious Nevada anti-government protester Cliven Bundy.
Western Australia's Department of Parks and Wildlife has developed an implosion technique to euthanize beached whales. A wildlife officer said it's the only state in Australia that's using explosions, and "there is no quicker result than that method." The bombs are detonated near the animals' brains, he said. In 27 years, 146 humpback whales have been reported stranded on Australia's west coast. Only 50 of those were found on the beach alive, and an additional 26 died soon after. A little more than a dozen had to be put down by wildlife officials. "The skull on a whale is quite thick and it's virtually impossible to shoot it with a high-powered rifle," explained explosives expert Ian Styles. "So we have to use explosives."
In his final State of the Union address Tuesday night, President Barack Obama implored Americans to take part in the democratic process. "Whatever you may believe, whether you prefer one party or no party, our collective future depends on your willingness to uphold your obligations as a citizen," he said. Obama also acknowledged that the country was more divided than it was when he took office. "It's one of the few regrets of my presidency — that the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better," he said. Obama also appealed to Congress to pass the Trans-Pacific Partnership, emphasized his proposal to lift the Cuban embargo, and again vowed to close the prison at Guantanamo—a failed promise he has made in previous State of the Union addresses. The president also described the country as "strong," "clear-eyed," and "big-hearted."
The suicide bomber responsible for an explosion in Istanbul that killed 10 people was identified as Nabil Fadil, who officials say arrived in Turkey last week after registering as a Syrian refugee. Turkish authorities said Wednesday that Fadil's fingerprints matched ones found in the bombing debris. Information provided by Fadil when he arrived in Turkey didn't trigger any security alerts, officials said. Fadil was a 28-year-old Syrian with ties to ISIS, security personnel said. At least 15 more people were wounded in the attack Tuesday, and many of them were Westerners.
A new poll shows Ted Cruz's lead over Donald Trump in Iowa has shrunk, but he remains the frontrunner among Republican presidential candidates. With just over two weeks until the first-in-the-nation caucuses, the Texas senator leads Trump by 3 percentage points, down from 10 last month. The survey was conducted by The Des Moines Register and Bloomberg Politics. Leading the rear are Marco Rubio in third place and Ben Carson in fourth. Among those polled, 83 percent said Trump's "birther" line of attack on Cruz is a "nonissue."
