Transit Alert – King County area transit service will have schedule revisions during the Winter holidays

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 05:24 PM PST

On Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, and New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, Metro operates a Sunday schedule and Sunday fares apply. If your bus does not normally operate on Sunday, it will not operate on December 25 or January 1.

Reduced weekday schedules
From Monday, December 21 through Thursday, December 31, reduced weekday schedules are in effect during the end-of-year holiday weeks. On days with reduced weekday schedules, some commuter, UW and school-oriented routes do not operate, and other routes have individual trips canceled. Details are in timetables and posted on Metro’s holiday and reduced service page.

Metro offices, including the Customer Information center, Lost and Found and Pass Sales counters, will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

For information about transit service visit Metro Online.

To find out if your transit service is affected by holiday weekend construction or events, visit Metro’s Service Advisories page.

Ride Transit to Seahawks home games
Ride regular Metro transit service or premium Seahawks Shuttle service from designated King County park and ride lots to Seahawks home games at CenturyLink Field.

Visit Metro's online Regional Trip Planner to plan your trip.

Visit the Community Transit, King County Water Taxi, Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, South Lake Union Streetcar or Washington State Ferries websites for information about service provided by each agency.

Metro is hiring
Driving part-time for Metro is ideal for anyone who wants work without weekend or late-night hours. For more information visit www.kingcounty.gov/DriveForMetro.

Metro wishes you a good and safe holiday.

Thank you for riding and for using Metro’s services.

1. WHOOPS
Secret Service Agent's Gun, Badge Stolen
In an another embarrassing event for the Secret Service, an agent's gun, badge, radio, handcuffs, and flash drive were stolen Monday afternoon around 4 p.m. near the White House, CNN reported. The items were taken from the agent's personal vehicle while it was parked in downtown Washington, and a report filed with the Metropolitan Police Department described that the agent noticed a back rear window of his car had been "unzipped." The report lists among the missing items a black Sig Sauer handgun, an APX6000 radio, handcuffs, a USB flash drive, a black Patagonia bag, and a Secret Service badge.

2. GUN CONTROL
Va. Ends Concealed-Carry Reciprocity
Virginia will no longer recognize concealed-carry handgun permits from 25 states that have reciprocity agreements with the commonwealth, state Attorney General Mark R. Herring announced Tuesday. The move is considered part of a larger initiative by gun-control advocates to tighten restrictions without going through GOP-controlled legislatures, The Washington Post reported. Herring said severing the out-of-state agreements will help prevent people who may be dangerous or irresponsible from carrying a concealed handgun in Virginia.

First Miss Iraq Crowned Since 1972
Shaima Qassem Abdulrahman has been crowned Miss Iraq, making the 20-year-old economics student the nation's first official pageant winner in 40 years. The last contest was held in 1972, and this year's iteration faced fierce opposition from religious conservatives and tribal leaders, some of whom allegedly sent in death threats against the participants. "I want to prove that the Iraqi woman has her own existence in society, she has her rights like men," Abdelrahman said of her victory. "I am afraid of nothing, because I am confident that what I am doing is not wrong."

Colombia Legalizes Medical Marijuana
Colombia legalized medical marijuana Tuesday, following through on President Juan Manuel Santos's November decree that the country would make the change. It had been legal to grow as many as 20 cannabis plants for personal use, and medical marijuana was already available for some. But the new policy will make it much easier to buy and sell the drug for medical reasons. Reuters reported in November that distributing, selling, and growing the drug will remain illegal. Colombia suspended the spraying of illicit crops this year, citing cancer concerns related to the herbicide that was being used.

10 Things on an Apple Fan's 2016 Wish List
When your favorite consumer tech company is also the best consumer tech
company in the world, and said tech company is generally a magnet for
hyperbole and blind customer loyalty -- while also producing more
products at higher levels of quality than ever before -- what's left to
really wish for? Plenty, it turns out. I'm not talking about a new Apple
car or even any special new product category.

Apple's Cook Goes to the Barricades on Encryption
Apple CEO Tim Cook brought the encryption battle between the high-tech
industry and the nation's law enforcement authorities to prime time TV
Sunday in an interview on the CBS news program 60 Minutes . During the
interview, Charlie Rose asked Cook about the need for law enforcement
agencies to access data that has been encrypted on Apple phones. There's
all kinds of sensitive information on smartphones today, Cook noted.

Juniper Networks Shortens ScreenOS Threat List
Juniper Networks on Sunday informed customers that recent security
threats to its ScreenOS were not as widespread as initially believed.
The company last week issued an alert following its discovery in
ScreenOS of unauthorized code that could allow an attacker to gain
administrative control of devices using Netscreen or to decrypt a VPN.
The two issues are unrelated to each other.

Success is a good thing. Sometimes, however, surges in orders and sales cause headaches for e-commerce companies. The key is to expect the unexpected. Planning ahead can help ensure that sales spikes are handled as smoothly as possible. "It's never too early to start planning for growth," said Marg Hyland, founder of Pegeen. "You need to be prepared." [More...]

Video Game Downloads May Eclipse Physical Format Sales
Sales of video games via downloads may surpass physical copies for the first time this holiday season. However, games in physical formats continue to dominate sales overall. "New physical software represented 67 percent of spending for the 12 months ending September 2015, with digital downloads and DLC representing the remaining 33 percent," said Liam Callahan, games industry analyst at NPD Group. Linux Foundation Gives Blockchain a Boost
The Linux Foundation last week announced it was teaming up with a group
of high-tech and financial giants on a project to advance the blockchain
technology made famous by bitcoin virtual currency. IBM, Cisco and Intel
have agreed to collaborate with a number of financial institutions and
other companies to develop an enterprise-grade open source distributed
ledger framework.

Ready or Not, Enterprise Appification Is Here
Portfolios of task-oriented mobile apps for employees, contractors and
business partners have been transforming the way enterprises conduct
business, Apperian reported last week. Companies that have launched
mobility initiatives have customized and deployed one or more apps that
have streamlined business operations, according to the firm's analysis
of 2 million app deployments.

Cook Rearranges Apple's Executive Suite
Apple on Thursday announced some personnel moves that suggest CEO Tim
Cook's future vision for the company. He named Jeff Williams chief
operating officer, elevated Johny Srouji to senior vice president,
broadened the powers of Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing
Phil Schiller, and added Tor Myhren as vice president of marketing
communications.

Congress Passes Budget Bill With Controversial Cybersecurity Provision
Congress on Friday passed an omnibus budget bill that included the
Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act, or CISA. The Senate earlier this
year passed CIS, which many conservative and liberal politicians, high-
tech firms, and privacy and civil liberty advocates oppose. The latest
version includes amendments that will allow corporations to share
customers' information with the government.
