| Police Kill Gunman at Movie Theater Posted: 05 Aug 2015 01:36 PM PDT Read This, Skip That... | | A man armed with a gun and a hatchet was shot dead by police at a movie theater in Antioch, Tennessee, law enforcement told the press. The suspect, a 51-year-old man wearing a surgical mask, reportedly entered the theater around 1:15 p.m. ET and walked into a screening of Mad Max: Fury Road. The gunman opened fire on a police officer, who returned fire. A SWAT team later engaged the gunman. Two women were reportedly injured with pepper spray and one man sustained a superficial wound from the hatchet, according to police. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Bill Clinton called Donald Trump this spring and "encouraged Trump's efforts to play a larger role in the Republican Party," the Washington Post reported Wednesday, citing five people familiar with the exchange. Clinton's personal office confirmed the call occurred. Trump aides claim their boss was "candid about his political ambitions and his potential interest in seeking the White House during the talk...." Clinton "analyzed Trump's prospects and his desire to rouse the GOP base," according to Trump allies. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The prime minister of Malaysia announced Wednesday that the Boeing 777 flaperon discovered on an island last week belongs to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The announcement is just official confirmation of what was virtually certain given only one Boeing 777's whereabouts are unknown: MH370. French prosecutors, however, were more reserved and said there are "very strong" indications the part found on Réunion Island in the eastern Indian Ocean is from MH370. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The hacking of the Joint Chiefs of Staff email network on July 27 marked the "most sophisticated" cyberbreach in U.S. military history, Department of Defense officials concede. Various government officials are working to revamp parts of their network in response. In the meantime, officials have spent the last 10 days scrubbing the system and creating mock hacking scenarios before giving military personnel access to it again. The attack on the Joint Staff network involved "new and unseen approaches into the network," one of the defense officials told The Daily Beast. After scrubbing it, putting in new protections and red teaming potential attacks " we are sharing the lessons learned with the rest of government." According to a second defense official, the attack was a spear phishing attack targeting the personal information of scores of users. The attack was so sophisticated officials are investigating whether a "state entity" was involved, the official said. — Nancy A. Youssef | | | | | | | | | | | | | | An email exchange obtained by The Baltimore Sun revealed that a member of the Baltimore Ravens staff warned the Indianapolis Colts that footballs had been deflated before their AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots last season. The Ravens released a statement Wednesday denying that they had said anything about the footballs in the game. "Prior to the AFC Championship game, no one from the Ravens talked to the Colts about deflated footballs," according to the statement. "We knew nothing of deflated footballs." | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Jesse Benton, the man who ran Ron Paul's presidential campaign in 2012 and now heads Rand Paul's super PAC, was indicted Wednesday for an alleged endorsement-for-pay scheme. Benton is accused of concealing a payment of $73,000 to then-Iowa State Senator Kent Sorenson in exchange for his support for Paul. "Federal campaign-finance laws are intended to ensure the integrity and transparency of the federal election process," Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell said in a statement. "When political operatives make under-the-table payments to buy an elected official's political support, it undermines public confidence in our entire political system." Two others have also been indicted in the case. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Walter Palmer's Florida home was vandalized Wednesday with "LION KILLER!" spray-painted on the garage door. Someone also threw pigs feet all over the dentist's lawn. Palmer is being sought for extradition after killing the beloved lion in Zimbabwe. | | | | | | | | | | The FBI arrested a former police lieutenant from Pine Lawn, Missouri, for conspiring to falsely arrest a mayoral candidate. Lt. Steven Blakeney made another person erroneously report that the candidate had taken a campaign poster from a local business, prosecutors allege. The poster belonged to Nakisha Ford, the opponent of former Mayor Sylvester Caldwell, who was sentenced to prison for corruption. Blakeney was indicted for one count of conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights under color of law, and falsification of records. Blakeney faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The Securities and Exchange Commission approved a rule Wednesday that requires companies to disclose the pay gap between typical wage earners and their CEOs. The agency's approval had been long delayed since it became required by the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act and passed the SEC by a narrow 3-2 margin. "While there is no doubt that this information comes with a cost, the final rule recommended by the staff provides companies with substantial flexibility in determining the pay ratio while remaining true to the statutory requirements," SEC Chairwoman Mary Jo White said. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | New evidence of Japan's atomic bomb program during World War II has been discovered and it shows the country was preparing to build the weapon as the end of the war neared. A retired Japanese professor discovered a blueprint and drawings for machines to enrich uranium dated March 1945. Tokyo burned documents about the program as the war was ending and the U.S. confiscated the rest. Scholars say Japan had the technical know-how to build a bomb but was starved for uranium, a rare natural resource not available in the archipelago. In May 1945, a German submarine carrying 1,200 pounds of uranium oxide was destined for Japan but surrendered to the U.S. after the fall of the Third Reich. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | THE DAILY BEAST | ABOUT US | CONTACT US | © Copyright 2015 The Daily Beast Company LLC 555 W. 18th Street, New York NY 10011 | If you are on a mobile device or cannot view the images in this message, click here to view this email in your Web browser. But both sides have given those Democrats who are set to oppose them a second option; they are asking them to at least delay announcing their decision until they get back." Read more... To the extent Republican party actors have moved against him, it has been to attack him -- not to rally around one of the other 16 candidates. This has focused even more attention on Trump. So naturally, his numbers surged and then continued to surge." Read more... Cities Mark R. Tercek and Douglas B.
