Important incendie à la Cité des sciences à Paris

Un important incendie s'est déclaré dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi à la Cité des sciences et de l'industrie dans le XIXe arrondissement de Paris. Il était toujours en cours à 06h15.

Les causes du sinistre n'ont pas encore été établies. Le feu s'est déclaré vers 03h dans une zone en travaux du bâtiment. Il y a actuellement plus de 120 pompiers mobilisés sur place.

Pour l'heure (peu après 06h), aucune victime n'a été à déplorer. Le bâtiment était a priori vide lorsque le feu s'est déclenché.

Selon France Info, six étages de l'immeuble seraient touchés par les flammes. Les pompiers évoquent une surface de 6000m2 menacée. "La maîtrise de l'incendie sera difficile compte tenu du contexte de travaux", a indiqué un responsable des pompiers de Paris à l'AFP.

Une odeur de brûlé a été ressentie par de nombreux parisiens dans la nuit et un panache de fumée a également été visible dans le ciel sombre du nord-est de la capitale.

Première conséquence : le tram T3 qui passe aux abords de la Cité ne circule pas aux premières heures de la journée.

U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berma said Wednesday that penalties against Tom Brady may be dropped due to cited weaknesses in the way the NFL handled the case. The suspension, which would have lasted four games, was upheld by Roger Goodell last month. Berman said he hopes to make a final ruling by September 4, which would be just six-days before the Patriots' season opening game.

Black Lives Matter Activist Not Biracial
Prominent Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King said for years that he is biracial, because he was born to a white mother and a black father, but Kentucky public records reviewed by The Daily Beast show that King's father is white. Jeffery Wayne King, born Nov. 11, 1955, is listed as Shaun King's father on his birth certificate. Criminal records identify Jeffrey King's ethnicity as white. After Breitbart News questioned King's race, the activist tweeted that he "did not concoct a lie" about his race. King also said, "If you have known me from when I was in elementary school at Huntertown Elementary until now, you've known me as black or bi-racial."

Jared Fogle Strikes Child Sex Plea
Longtime Subway spokesman Jared Fogle reached a plea agreement Wednesday on one count of "unlawful commercial sexual acts with minors" and one count of possession of child pornography, according to an agreement released by the U.S. Attorney of the Southern District of Indiana. Information released Wednesday alleges that Fogle continued to seek sex with minors after his co-conspirator was arrested.The former Subway sandwich pitchman used escort websites to have sex with two girls under age 18, according to prosecutors. Between 2010 and 2013, Fogle traveled from Indiana to New York to have sex with the minors, one of whom was 17 years old. Fogle had sex with them as a guest of the Plaza and Ritz-Carlton hotels. Fogle told one of the victims he would pay her a fee if she could find a 16-year-old girl to have sex with, "while stating the younger the girl, the better," prosecutors said. As part of the plea deal, Fogle will agree to pay each of the 14 victims $100,000 and will serve no less than five years in prison. The man who ran Fogle's charity for children, Russell Taylor, was named as a co-conspirator who allegedly filmed nude minors without their knowledge to produce child pornography. Prosecutors say Taylor gave Fogle the child porn and Fogle "made comments approving of this activity and discussed some of these minors by name."Fogle's wife, Katie, issued a statement Wednesday morning that she is "extremely shocked and disappointed" by the developments. "I am in the process of seeking a dissolution of the marriage," she said. "My focus is exclusively on the well-being of my children." Correction: This post originally stated that Fogle pleaded guilty. In fact, Fogle has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He is expected to formally plead guilty in court.

Trump Would Take Anchor Babies to Court
Donald Trump said he wants to "test out" in court his views that children born to undocumented immigrants on U.S. soil are not American citizens. "I don't think they have American citizenship and if you speak to some very, very good lawyers—and I know some will disagree—but many of them agree with me and you're going to find they do not have American citizenship," Trump said Tuesday. The Fourteenth Amendment clearly states: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside." Trump added that the "good ones" would be able to apply for the right to return once all undocumented residents had been deported.

UN to Let Iran Inspect Its Own Nuke Site
A secret agreement between Iran and the United Nations will allow Iranian experts to inspect a nuclear site in the country allegedly used to develop nuclear weapons. This work is most frequently done by inspectors hired by the UN itself. Opponents of the Iran deal have often criticized it for trusting Iran too much. This specific agreement with the UN was carved out separately from the main Iran negotiation. It was agreed upon by Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, but endorsed by the United States. The White House has said that there are no side deals meant to be more favorable to Iran and that this specific planned inspection is akin to any other arrangements made between a country and the IAEA.

E-Cigs 95% Safer Than Cigarettes
England's public health agency has said that vaping is possibly as much as 95 percent safer than smoking, in its first official statement on the safety of e-cigarettes. They "have the potential to make a significant contribution to the endgame for tobacco," Public Health England said, and it suggested the devices might one day be prescribed as a cigarette alternative. "I want to see these products coming to the market as licensed medicines," said England's chief medical officer. "This would provide assurance on the safety, quality, and efficacy to consumers who want to use these products as quitting aids, especially in relation to the flavourings used, which is where we know least about any inhalation risks."

ISIS Beheads 82-Year-Old Palmyra Scholar
ISIS has reportedly beheaded an 82-year-old antiquities scholar in Syria's ancient city of Palmyra, the country's antiquities chief said Tuesday. Militants hung Khaled Asaad's body on a column in the city's historic main square, said Syrian state antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim. Asaad served as the head of antiquities in Palmyra for more than 50 years and worked with U.S., French, German and Swiss archaelogists on research on Palmyra's 2,000-year-old ruins. He was detained and interrogated for more than a month by the militants, Abdulkarim said. ISIS militants seized control of Palmyra from government forces in May, raising fears of the destruction of the Roman-era structures.

Less Than Half of Dems Support Hillary
For the first time since she began running for president, Hillary Clinton does not have a majority of Democratic support. A new poll by CNN released Wednesday is the second national survey out this week showing Clinton at less than 50 percent support in her party. Clinton now stands at 47 percent, Bernie Sanders at 29 percent, and possible candidate Joe Biden at 14 percent. Clinton is suffering from a lack of trust: 63 percent of Democrats say she did nothing wrong as secretary of state, down from 71 percent. The best news for Clinton is that she would beat all Republicans in the general election, including Donald Trump, by a greater margin than President Obama beat Mitt Romney in 2012.

Man Charged for Statue of Liberty Threat
A West Virginia man will appear in a Texas court Wednesday to face charges that he placed a false 911 call threatening that a bomb was at the Statue of Liberty. Authorities allege that Jason Paul Smith, 42, identified himself as an "ISI terrorist" named "Abdul Yasin" during the April 24 call, and said "we" are preparing to "blow up" the statue. Smith, who is hearing impaired, allegedly used a special service to place the call. There is no indication that he is Muslim or an actual ISIS sympathizer. More than 3,000 people were evacuated from the Statue of Liberty in response.  Debra Smith Youngson, the suspect's mother, said she was surprised and heartbroken when reached Wednesday by The Daily Beast. "I don't know anything about that, I'm just finding out about this this morning," she said. "I'm a mother who's heartbroken. I just can't imagine what's going on." On her Facebook page, however, Youngson regularly posts anti-Muslim propaganda. The most recent post was made just two hours before she was reached by The Daily Beast. The viral meme about the "Advancement of Islamic Agenda for America" is false, apparently created on a website for Church Sign Maker."I don't have a comment on that," Youngson said when asked about her posts. A Muslim community organization is leading donations to families of victims of the Chattanooga shooting. The Faith and Culture Center of Nashville presented a $22,5000 check for the families at a meeting this week. "We want to come condemn the actions of this person and say that they are not representative of our faith," said center president Daoud Abudiab. "We are here today to counter the actions of someone who has sought to disrupt out society. We are part of the American society, and when our neighbor is hurt we should all offer help and prayer and stand together."

Metro's new trolleys are purple, green, and easy to use

Five of Metro's brand-new, state-of-the-art electric trolley buses started service today. They're the first of 110 40-foot trolleys we'll be rolling out this year. What a fitting way to mark the 75th anniversary of Seattle's trolley system!

Next year, 64 new 60-foot trolleys will join the fleet, replacing the remainder of our old, worn out trolleys.

The trolleys we just launched will operate on routes 1, 2, 3, 36 and 70 this week, and around the system after that. You'll have no trouble spotting them—they're purple, a new color for Metro.

In another sense, the trolleys are remarkably green: zero emissions and up 30 percent more energy-efficient than the old trolleys they're replacing. Their quiet operation is another big plus in the noisy urban environment where they travel.

Our customers will find lots of features designed to improve their rides: filtered heating and air conditioning, low floors for easier and faster boarding and exiting, and updated bike racks and systems for securing wheelchairs. To make it easier for passengers to circulate and exit, the new buses have a few less seats and have back doors that riders can open by pressing on them when the bus is stopped.

The new trolleys can even go short distances off-wire. While inside the bus, the driver can disconnect the trolley's poles from the power lines and use battery power to scoot around obstructions, keeping our riders moving. As we gain experience with this capability and deploy more new trolleys, we'll have much less need to substitute diesel buses for trolleys to operate around weekend events or construction zones—reducing noise, energy consumption and emissions.

Only five transit agencies in the country have trolley systems, and ours is the second largest (behind San Francisco, which partnered with us on the trolley purchase so we'd get the best possible price). As our transit system has evolved over the years, the Seattle community has held fast to our trolleys, and it's no wonder. They're a great match for the steep hills and the character of the neighborhoods where they operate. 

We're proud that our new trolleys start another era for Seattle's historic trolley system, and keep us moving toward our goal of having a bus fleet made up entirely of electric and hybrid buses by 2018.

Also coming soon: three battery-electric buses that we'll be testing for potential future use. These zero-emission coaches can travel up to 23 miles on a charge of less than 10 minutes.
