| Hillary Clinton's Anonymous Campaign Posted: 02 Jun 2015 03:59 PM PDT Friday, May 8, 2015 | View in Browser THE NUTGRAF There is a hilarious video of reporters chasing Hillary Clinton's "scooby van" in Iowa, which seems like an apt metaphor for campaign coverage writ large -- dozens of redundant reporters rushing to cover the same minutiae. But journalists aren't entirely to blame for the Chipotle-caliber stories coming out of the Clinton camp these days. The former secretary of state has restricted press access to such a degree that those assigned her campaign are starving. On Monday, a handful of journalists met in Washington to discuss the Clinton campaign's unprecedented lockdown on information. It's not just that Clinton has not made herself available for questions; campaign staffers are being cagey about basic logistical details, making it hard for news organizations to plan their coverage, and declining to go on the record even for the most mundane of talking points. As the reporters' two-hour meeting concluded, the Clinton campaign sent an email about an upcoming event but said the details could only be attributed to an unnamed "campaign official." The New York Times' Adam Nagourney outed the sender on Twitter, saying event details do not call for the anonymity typically reserved for those who fear retaliation for speaking the truth. — Gabriel Arana (@gabrielarana) PULLQUOTE “Sh*t, I only have hundred dollar bills. | HUFFPOST HILL - Big Brother Bodyshamed By Congress, Will Slim Down Posted: 02 Jun 2015 02:35 PM PDT By Eliot Nelson and Arthur Delaney FIFA President Sepp Blatter stepped down just four days into his term -- the refs gave Blatter four extra days because of injury time in his last one. The Senate sent the USA Freedom Act to President Obama’s desk for his signature, which will downgrade the scope of the government’s domestic intelligence apparatus from “omnipresent” to “sweeping.” And the staff of Run, Warren, Run have conceded that Elizabeth Warren is not, in fact, running for president. How many staffers transition to You Keep Doing You, Liz remains to be seen. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015: SENATE PASSES HILARIOUSLY-NAMED USA FREEDOM ACT, REFORMING NSA SURVEILLANCE - Definitely the winner of this year's "Clean Skies Act Award For Ballsiness In Legislative Naming." HuffPost: "After allowing portions of the Patriot Act to expire early Monday morning, lawmakers voted on Tuesday to reinstate the National Security Agency's sweeping data collection programs, though with modest reforms to the agency's programs and the secret court charged with keeping it in check. In a 67-32 vote -- called earlier than expected -- the upper chamber agreed to pass the USA Freedom Act, effectively ending the two-day lapse in the NSA's programs. The act re-establishes modified versions of the expired Patriot Act provisions. Attempts to amend the USA Freedom Act fell short in the Senate, where the debate over the legislation has led to weeks of political turmoil. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr (R-N.C.) put forth a handful of amendments that would have weakened the reforms to the Patriot Act provisions. However, those measures failed to pass, largely due to concern that the House, which passed an unamended bill earlier this month by a vote of 338-88, would refuse to approve an amended act." [HuffPost] For the first time in history, a soccer pro took a fall without grabbing his shin and faking an injury. CAN OUR GOVERNMENT INVADE OUR PRIVACY, PROTECT US, FERRY ITS KIDS TO SOCCER PRACTICE AND HAVE IT ALL? - Free idea: let the NSA spy on all of us, but have the clicks that its phone wiretaps make spell out "WE'RE LISTENING TO YOU" in Morse code. Problem solved. Ali Watkins: "Does the multibillion-dollar U.S. intelligence apparatus truly have no backup plan? ... Tucked away in Section 224 of the act is what’s come to be known as its 'grandfather' clause. That clause allows active investigations that were started prior to Sunday's expiration to continue under the now-defunct programs, and lawmakers have confirmed that's a viable option. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Monday that routine use of Section 215 is still occurring under the grandfather clause...Section 218 of the Patriot Act, which doesn’t expire, sets a fairly low bar for getting these court orders, requiring only that wiretaps or collection can yield foreign intelligence. Section 214 of the act is also still standing. It involves pen register and trap-and-trace devices, which can record the numbers and recipients of phone calls and communications. How that collection will function given the blurry line between Internet and telephone communications remains to be seen. Additionally, the FBI has its own tools it can use to collect personal information: National Security Letters, which are used to force companies -- including banks and telecommunications companies -- to turn over information." [HuffPost] President Obama will deliver a eulogy at Beau Biden's funeral on Saturday. DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Half of older Americans have no retirement savings, according to a new report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Fifty-two percent of households of people 55 and older haven't saved a dime for retirement, though nearly half of those do have an employer pension. Among the remaining 48 percent of older households with savings, the median amount was $109,000 -- good for an annuity of about $405 per month. [HuffPost] UPSIDE DOWNER - Most Americans think poor people shouldn't feel ashamed for using the safety net, according to a new YouGov poll. Just 14 percent of survey respondents said they thought people should feel ashamed for using welfare, while 62 percent said people shouldn't feel ashamed. Republicans were more likely to favor shame than Democrats, 20 percent to 9 percent. During a House Agriculture Committee hearing about food stamps last month, Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) discussed the possible benefits of welfare shame. Yoho explained that he grew up in a wealthy family but wound up broke and on food stamps after he got married at 19. "I remember having the coupons, the food stamps, and there was a stigma, but I was so thankful they were there, but [the stigma] implored me to work harder to get off them as quick as I could," Yoho said. "So I don't think that's a bad thing, per se." [HuffPost] Does somebody keep forwarding you this newsletter? Get your own copy. It's free! Sign up here. Follow us on Twitter - @HuffPostHill CONGRESSMAN KNEW ABOUT HASTRET ALLEGATIONS - Watt did he know and when did he know it? Sam Stein: "At least one member of Congress was likely aware that former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) allegedly sexually molested a former male student prior to his time in Congress. Relatively early on during Haster's speakership, Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.) was approached with news about the alleged abuse by Hastert, according to a source with knowledge of the conversation that took place with Watt...According to the source, the person who approached Watt was an intermediary for the family of the abuse victim and knew the North Carolina congressman informally. It is unclear what Watt, who now directs the Federal Housing Finance Agency, did with the information. The Huffington Post reached out to more than a dozen former and current lawmakers and elected officials. Former members of Congress who served with Watt said he had never mentioned it to them. Several of Watt’s colleagues at the time who are still serving in Congress didn't recall hearing anything. Democratic leadership sources say they never heard anything from Watt and had no inkling of Hastert’s past." [HuffPost] ![]() Is this for gay marriage or Obamacare? GOP'S 'ESTABLISHMENT' PREFERENCE MIGHT BE OVER - Tough luck for Senator Mumsy von Hedgefundwitz [R - Sea Island (Winter) - East Hampton (Summer)]. Stu Rothenberg: "The Republican Party continues to change. Rank-and-file GOP voters are angrier and more frustrated after eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency, and they are looking for new voices that reflect their frustration and desire to roll back the Obama years. While 'blue' states such as New York and Connecticut still matter in the GOP nomination process, the decline of the party’s strength in the Northeast has cost those states delegates at Republican conventions. For example, New York sent 154 delegates to the 1976 Republican National Convention in Kansas City, while the state had only 95 delegates at the 2012 convention in Tampa. That development has strengthened the voices of Republicans in the South and conservatives nationally." [Roll Call] HERBALIFE COUNTER-LOBBIES AGAINST BILL ACKMAN - Great article from Alexandra Stevenson and Ben Protess, whom we can't say with complete certainty won't end up working for one of these guys as a researcher: "This behind-the-scenes lobbying, detailed for the first time in interviews and in confidential documents reviewed by The New York Times, shows that after two years of Mr. Ackman’s walking the halls of Congress and entreating prosecutors, Herbalife is taking a section from his playbook. The counteroffensive -- carried out by Democratic operatives, three public relations firms and two law firms stacked with former prosecutors -- signals a critical moment in the battle. At this latest juncture, each side has now spent tens of millions of dollars shaping the public narrative -- and the federal investigations...Herbalife has taken its campaign to Washington, where it rallied members of Congress to scrutinize Mr. Ackman. The company also recently donated $40,000 to a nonprofit group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, that has called on lawmakers to investigate Mr. Ackman. But after receiving a call from a reporter, the group pledged to refund the $40,000 to avoid the 'appearance of a conflict.'" [NYT] Everything is pointless, everything is cool when you're part of a team: "CREW, which has long campaigned against short-sellers using political connections for financial gain, contacted Herbalife last year about Mr. Ackman’s effort. Melanie Sloan, the founding executive director of CREW, then spent months researching Mr. Ackman… By then, Ms. Sloan had left CREW for her own consulting firm, whose clients include Herbalife. And shortly before CREW sent the letter to lawmakers, Ms. Sloan urged Herbalife to donate $40,000 to CREW. Herbalife agreed. Ms. Sloan made the donation, her colleagues said, and billed Herbalife." [Ibid.] BECAUSE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR - Here's a hamster monster. Darth Vader truck nuts would've been better but we applaud the effort: "During a recent trip to a high school rodeo in Casper, Wyo., [Dick Cheney] responded to a question about his unpopularity by flashing his signature uneven grin. 'Remind me to show you the back of my truck,' he said. Outside the rodeo arena, he took a moment to show off the latest feature on his Ford F-350 Super Duty truck, a Darth Vader trailer-hitch cover, a nod to his alter-ego from the Bush days. 'Darth Vader,' he said, smiling. 'I’m rather proud of that.'" Today's Story Highlights
Nintendo Scotches Android Console Rumor
Nintendo not only has embraced the idea of releasing its iconic intellectual properties for mobile devices, but also is planning to base
its next videogame console on a version of the Android operating system,
according to a Japanese-language business publication. The publication
claimed an inside source revealed that Nintendo's next console, code
named "NX," will run on Android.

Intel Buys Altera to Fulfill Moore's Law Promise
Intel has announced that it will acquire Altera, which makes field- programmable gate array technology, in an all-cash transaction valued at
approximately $16.7 billion. Intel will pay $54 a share. The deal paves
the way for Intel to develop new classes of products in the data center
and Internet of Things market segments. Altera's share price jumped
nearly 6 percent to close at $51.68 on Monday.

Docker and Containers: An Ecosystem in Motion
The community around Docker and containers is drawing interest from large enterprise and service provider end users, as well as involvement
from dozens of vendors, including those pursuing various container
alternatives. 451 Research has published some new research and analysis
on this nascent open source software community in its latest long-format
report.

Message for Marketers: Always Be Engaging
In sales, we know customer retention is critical for success in the subscription economy. For many tech companies in the SaaS space, it
takes three years to break even. In insurance, which has toiled in the
subscription economy for more than a century, the average break-even
time is an incredible seven years. Because of that, sales compensation
is starting to change.

The Painful Persistence of Ad Injections
Some of those annoying ads that pop up when you visit a site on the Web or do a search may be served up by, for want of a better word,
"hijackers." They use binaries, extensions, or network ISPs to modify a
page's content to insert or replace ads with or without the user's
consent. It's called "ad injection," and the problem is extensive. The
problem begins with software infecting users' browsers.

Today's Story Highlights
Senate Ready to Rumble Over Freedom Act Amendments
The U.S. Senate on Tuesday voted to close debate on the USA Freedom Act, a measure that would prohibit the NSA from the indiscriminate collection
Americans' phone call data. The bill already has passed in the House.
However, the brawling over the bill is not quite over. The Senate has
yet to address several proposed amendments to the legislation before
voting on it later on Tuesday.

Microsoft Starts Taking Windows 10 Reservations
Windows 10 will be available for free to users running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 on their PCs or tablets. However, it's likely that once
they've been exposed to the full range of possibilities, many of those
users will opt to buy a new device that can take full advantage of the
operating system. Using the biometric authentication in Windows Hello,
for example, likely will require a new PC.

Google's Cardboard May Help Build Strong VR Foundation
It's a whimsical approach to virtual reality, but Google's Cardboard VR platform breaks down the barriers of entry and allows consumers to bring
their own devices to the movement. "I think [Cardboard] will help with
the general popularity of VR," said Marxent CEO Beck Besecker, "but I
think the folks that are really going to gravitate to VR are going to
want a high-quality experience."

HP vs. Apple: The Contrast Is in the Turnaround
I was at Dell's analyst conference last week and HP Discover is this week. As I was considering the contrast between the two companies, I
started to think the contrast between Apple and HP is greater. There is
a lot of cross-pollination between the firms -- and given how often
Apple has embarrassed HP in the market, you'd think HP would have
learned from its mistakes. Apparently, it hasn't.

The Senate voted on Tuesday to reign in the National Security Agency's bulk collection of Americans' telephone data and in the process rebuked Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The USA Freedom Act would mainly take away storage of so-called metadata from the hands of the NSA and leave it with telephone companies, though they could still be compelled to turn that data over to the government. McConnell proposed an amendment that would've torn out a provision requiring greater transparency from the secret court that authorizes domestic surveillance but he lost. Last month, several former senior intelligence officials told The Daily Beast that the bill to limit the NSA's power is still a "big win" for the agency. The act now moves to President Obama's desk for signature.
Sepp Blatter, who announced Tuesday that he will resign as the head of FIFA, is now the focus of a U.S. criminal investigation into corruption at FIFA. (Blatter has not been publicly identified as a target for the investigation, so the FBI has yet to comment.) The New York Times reported Tuesday that U.S. officials are hoping to extract information from some of the 14 FIFA officials who have already been arrested and charged, then work their way up the organization from there—just like they did against the mafia.
About 100,000 Walmart managers will get a pay raise next month, the company announced Tuesday, with wages rising as much as 26 percent. Managers for departments such as produce, electronics, and auto care will see their hourly wage rise to at least $13 an hour and go as high as $24.70 an hour. Managers of other departments, such as clothing or consumer staples, will start at $10.90 an hour and go up to $20.71 an hour.
A Michigan city is giving residents a one-time tax hike to help pay for a settlement over a videotaped instance of police brutality. The July 1 charge will bring in more than $6 million to cover the traffic-stop beating. Although the city of Inkster has liability insurance for these kinds of situations, it only kicks in at payments of more than $2 million—and the settlement over Officer William Melendez's assault didn't meet the bar. Last week, a judge reviewing the incident ordered Melendez to stand trial for misconduct, assault, and strangulation.
Caitlyn Jenner chose her new name after watching the Miss America pageant for several years and keeping a list of names she liked, according to Vanity Fair. She told the magazine that two names, Heather and Cathy, stuck with her but she ultimately went with "Caitlyn" after her assistant Rhonda suggested it.
Majid Khan, one of the Guantanamo Bay detainees identified as having suffered through rectal feeding, accused the CIA of a wider range of abuses, according to newly released documents obtained by Reuters. Among the other alleged abuses are videotaped nude interrogations, genital touching, and having ice water poured on his genitals. Reuters reports Khan told his lawyers he wished the interrogators had killed him, and that he suffered through hallucinations in which he says he saw cows and giant lizards. The 35-year-old Pakistani citizen confessed to working with al Qaeda and volunteering to be a sleeper agent in America.
Mike Huckabee said he wishes he could've been transgender in high school so he could've showered with girls, BuzzFeed reports him saying to a religious crowd this year. "Now I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in P.E.," Huckabee told National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville. "I'm pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, 'Coach, I think I'd rather shower with the girls today.'"
Roger Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion and the No. 2-ranked player in the world, was ousted at the French Open on Tuesday by Stan Wawrinka, Federer's Swiss Davis Cup teammate. Eighth-seeded Wawrinka now moves to the semifinal of the Grand Slam event. "I played by best match in a Grand Slam tournament and my best match on clay," Wawrinka said.
