East Lake Washington Boulevard closing for utility work for two weekends: May 29 and June 5

WSDOT and city of Seattle crews will work around the clock for two consecutive weekends to replace old water and electrical utility lines in Montlake near SR 520. This work requires closure of nearby lanes and sidewalks on East Lake Washington Boulevard; closure details for each weekend are below.

East Lake Washington Boulevard closure map

May 29-June 1: East Lake Washington Boulevard

  • From 7 p.m. Friday, May 29 to 6 a.m. Monday, June 1 all lanes and sidewalks of East Lake Washington Boulevard from Montlake Boulevard to East Roanoke Street will be closed.
  • Between East Roanoke Street and the SR 520 ramps to and from Lake Washington Boulevard, only the northbound lane of Lake Washington Boulevard will also be closed; the southbound lane will remain open.
  • All SR 520 ramps will remain open.
  • Crews will maintain access for bicyclists and pedestrians in the Montlake area. Bicyclists and pedestrians can use the existing city of Seattle bike route over the 24th Avenue East bridge to travel through the Montlake area (see route map).

June 5-8: Eastbound SR 520 closure and East Lake Washington Boulevard

  • From 11 p.m. Friday, June 5 to 5 a.m. Monday, June 8 eastbound SR 520 will be closed from Montlake Boulevard to 92nd Avenue Northeast while crews install new toll equipment.

  • From 7 p.m. Friday, June 5 to 6 a.m. Monday, June 8 East Lake Washington Boulevard will also be closed from Montlake Boulevard to East Roanoke Street.
  • Between East Roanoke Street and the SR 520 ramps to and from Lake Washington Boulevard, just the northbound lane of Lake Washington Boulevard will be closed, while the southbound lane will remain open.
  • Crews will maintain access for bicyclists and pedestrians in the Montlake area. Check our website for updated detour information for the second weekend.

One overnight closure of Eastside transit stops May 30, multiple overnight single-lane closures of SR 520 mainline May 28 and June 1 near Medina

Please plan ahead for upcoming overnight single-lane closures of SR 520 and overnight closures of the westbound platforms of both the 92nd Avenue Northeast and Evergreen Point Road transit stops. These closures are necessary as crews prepare to install temporary tolling infrastructure for the SR 520 Floating Bridge and Landings Project. Both directions of SR 520 will remain open at all times during this work.

Beginning Thursday, May 28, crews will begin overnight single-lane closures of SR 520 between Evergreen Point Road and 92nd Avenue Northeast. As part of this work, crews will also close the westbound platforms at both the 92nd Avenue Northeast and Evergreen Point Road transit stops late Saturday night, May 30 through early Sunday morning, May 31.

Tailored to fit: Metro's alternative services

Tailored to fit: Metro's alternative services

You're familiar with Metro buses, but do you know about our alternative services? Metro is working with communities where regular bus service isn't available or isn't the best fit, developing innovative, customized services to meet local transportation needs.

We're exploring both tried-and-true approaches, like shuttles operated through a Metro/community partnership, and cutting-edge ideas, such as flexible, on-demand ridesharing that uses an app to connect drivers with people who want a ride right away.

The King County Council approved funding in our 2015-2016 budget to expand alternative services, building on our earlier successes. Both Executive Constantine and the Council recognize that by using innovative approaches and partnering with local communities, we can meet local mobility needs and stretch our public transportation dollars.

Here's what we're up to around the county:
We've been working with a number of communities that experienced service reductions in September 2014, finding cost-effective ways to fill service gaps. In partnership with local cities, we're starting community shuttles in several areas where residents wanted regular trips to jobs or key services.

Snoqualmie Valley shuttle

In February we launched Route 628, giving residents of North Bend and Snoqualmie peak-period connections to regional bus routes at the Issaquah Highlands Park-and-Ride. This shuttle also provides new connections for Highlands residents through a flexible service area, where riders can call ahead to schedule off-route pick-ups or drop-offs. Thanks to our partners' help in getting the word out, this shuttle provides more than 60 passenger trips per day at about half the cost of the bus service it replaced.

This new Snoqualmie Valley service builds on a popular earlier project, the Valley Shuttle serving Duvall, Carnation, Fall City, Snoqualmie and North Bend. This service is funded by Metro and the Snoqualmie Tribe.

On June 8, we'll launch community shuttles in Burien and Mercer Island. The City of Burien is partnering with us to launch the new Route 631. Providing midday service, this shuttle will connect neighborhoods to critical destinations like the Burien Transit Center and Highline Medical Center and will offer flexible service in the Gregory Heights area. We recently gave a preview of the new shuttle to some Burien residents who had advocated for it. "I'm going to sleep better tonight knowing I'll have this transportation," one community member told us.

On Mercer Island, a new peak-hour community shuttle, Route 630, will provide flexible service in east Mercer Island and trips to First Hill and downtown Seattle. The service is jointly funded by Metro and the cities of Mercer Island and Seattle through the regional partnership program created by Seattle's transit ballot measure last fall.

rideshare app on smart phone

Ridesharing as needed
We're also getting ready to test innovative approaches to ridesharing that give people flexibility in their day-to-day travel. An app or website matches drivers with riders—practically in real time.

We're testing a version called TripPool with an apartment community on Mercer Island. Using Metro vans, designated volunteer driverswho are commuters themselveswill offer rides to the Mercer Island Park-and-Ride at set times. Riders can sign up on the app and hop into any of the vans, any day. We're also exploring a Community Van concept where vans and volunteer drivers help groups make non-commute, midday, evening and weekend trips to set destinations such as grocery stores or to special events.

In Redmond, we'll be testing a different approach to real-time carpooling. We're partnering with iCarpool to promote a mobile app that matches drivers and riders on a trip-by-trip basis. Drivers and riders will share the commute costs as well as the benefits, like use of HOV lanes and reduced or no tolls. We're excited about tapping into the expanding world of people-to-people transportation-sharing services.

There's more to come
Right now we're working with southeast King County communities—Enumclaw, Renton, Maple Valley, Covington, Black Diamond, Auburn and Renton—looking for effective ways to meet unmet mobility needs. We conducted an online survey, held community meetings, and rode buses and talked with riders to identify service gaps and hear people's ideas. We used what we heard to develop service alternatives that we're discussing with the community now. Learn more >>

We look forward to talking with Vashon Island residents this summer about options for better meeting the island's unique transportation needs.

The projects underway are breaking new ground for Metro. We'll monitor them closely to see what works and what doesn't, and make adjustments along the way to help them succeed. As they get established, we'll be looking for new opportunities.

Visit our alternative services website to learn more about what we're doing to leverage emerging technologies and transportation strategies to match transit services with local community needs.

Sincerely,

Kevin Desmond, General Manager
King County Metro Transit

The rise and fall of Johnny Depp

Posted: 28 May 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Middlebrow
By Lauren Duca
In the interest of journalistic integrity, I feel I must disclose that my AIM screen name was once laurenndepp. I also may have, at some point in 2008, cut up a picture book of Johnny Depp and arranged his images in a heart-shaped collage on my wall. To experience similar emotional turmoil over the life and times of John Christopher Depp II, please listen to Hans Zimmer's "Pirates Of The Caribbean" theme while you read.

What happened to Johnny Depp? We know him now as a parody of himself, who prepares for a night out by deciding how many leather bracelets to wear. The quirky charisma he lends each role, once seen as genius character acting, has become tired and redundant, perhaps regurgitated at peak force with that Mad Hatter dance from "Alice in Wonderland." Depp has been dodging the Hollywood rule book since he achieved newfound fame post-"21 Jump Street," and yet somehow he's ended up tired and sold out after 30 years in the spotlight. He's reached critical mass.

880depp6

Depp truly hit superstardom in 2003 with "Pirates of the Caribbean." But he had made a name for himself long before. Convinced to pursue acting by one Nicolas Cage, Depp got his first part after he auditioned for "Nightmare on Elm Street" -- scoring the role after Craven's 13-year-old daughter saw Depp's headshot and thought he was dreamy. From there, Depp landed "21 Jump Street." The role of Tom Hanson allowed him to make a name for himself as a heartthrob. Soon his was Fox's biggest star. But he rallied against an image based on his magnetic good looks, making deliberately risky choices in spite of the fact that he had once covered Tiger Beat.

Depp rejected being the Hero and Romantic Interest in favor of building to films like "Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas" and "Donnie Brasco" in the late '90s. Almost a decade before those golden years on his résumé, he told "21 Jump Street" directors Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh that he wanted to be fired. He spit in the face of such shallow success as a teen idol, and signed on for John Waters' "Cry-Baby," a campy melodrama which actively mocked Fox studios' attempt to mold him into a pretty boy product. Once Cannell and Hasburgh let Depp out of his contract, he had managed to build enough of a reputation on his skill and range (based largely on his work with Waters) to earn the titular role in "Edward Scissorhands," despite the fact that Tim Burton had his pick of big names for the part (including Tom Cruise).

880depp5

That's the line on Depp's IMDb page where things really take off. It's easy to blame Burton for destroying our once-beloved handsome and accessible outsider. Thinking quickly back on their work together, it seems like Burton round down Depp's uniqueness through the sheer repetition of characters like Willy Wonka and that unfunny vampire in "Dark Shadows." Still, "Edward Scissorhands" is perhaps Burton's best film and easily one of Depp's best roles. In a way, Burton is responsible for both creating and destroying his muse.

Burton's move into franchises and remakes is where Depp's methods seemed to fade to schtick. In films like "Sweeney Todd," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Dark Shadows" -- none of which are original works -- Depp seemed to play on slight deviations of the same quirky charisma offset by a few weird hairdos. Released between 2005 and 2012, that set of films meant for an overload of sameness which managed to negatively affect public perception of Depp's earlier work. Seeing roles like his godawful Mad Hatter damaged the glory of "Ed Wood" and "Edward Scissorhands" in retrospect. Burton can't be blamed for the mess that was "Mortdecai" or Depp's tired fairy tale wolf in "Into the Woods," though those roles feel like they are part of the same chronic phoning it in. Watching even just two of the aforementioned disasters begs the question: how long had Depp just been playing slightly nuanced versions of the same off-beat dude?

880depp7

Perhaps the strangest (and most infuriating) part of Depp's career arc is that he would seemingly sell out at this point. He pursued only the most interesting parts when it was risky to do so, then gave into the cheap (franchise and remake) choices long after he'd earned the right to do whatever he wanted. He's said he doesn't "give a fuck" now, but where that used to apply to fame and money, apparently now it refers to quality.

Still, it's not too late to tell my inner 12-year-old that there is hope. Assuming he doesn't go to jail for bringing dogs to Australia, his upcoming "Black Mass" may be the beacon of light marking a return to form for several more decades of greatness. Depp has totally transformed himself for the role of Whitey Bulger. He's shed his handsomeness for blotchy skin and a receding hair line. The tired idiosyncrasies of the latter Burton canon are laid to rest in exchange for a studied intensity reminiscent of his masterful first mob film, "Donnie Brasco." There's a chance for Depp to move out of critical mass through "Black Mass," to continue, once again, picking roles for the love of the work (in favor of a fat pay check with which to buy more leather bracelets and / or islands).

If you close your eyes, you can almost imagine him talking to the mirror in the role of Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka or Sweeney Todd, winking at his reflection and flicking his wrist as he tells himself in a flourishing accent that it's finally time to get back to work.

THE NUTGRAF

Besides being a sex columnist and commentator on LGBT issues, Dan Savage is also an amateur wordsmith. In the runup to the 2004 election, he coined "santorum" -- "a frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex" -- in honor of then-Sen. Rick Santorum, who thinks homosexuality is so gross, so filthy and nasty and abominable he just can't seem to get it off his mind or out of his mouth. Now, in light of the revelation that Bible-thumping reality-TV star Josh Duggar of "19 Kids and Counting" fame molested five underage girls as a teenager, Savage is crowdsourcing a new definition for "duggar." "Clearly 'duggary' needs to be a word. Should it mean sexual hypocrisy? Fundy hypocrisy? Child molestation?" Savage said on Twitter. Among other suggested definitions and permutations: "an intensely hypocritical moral lecture" or duggar, a verb meaning "to cover up child abuse." Critics shouldn't be quick to dismiss the campaign as standard Internet trolling. "Santorum" began to interfere with Rick Santorum's presidential prospects when Savage's term started appearing before the candidate's own web site in search results.

HUFFPOST HILL - Wacky For Pataki

Posted: 28 May 2015 02:48 PM PDT

HuffPost Hill
A New Yorker hasn’t sweated under the spotlight like George Pataki did during his presidential campaign announcement today since Patrick Ewing in the 1994 finals. Rick Santorum is so out of touch with the culture that he is getting rid of his sweater vests just as normcore is peaking. And if you were to travel back to 1991, no one would believe you when you said many politicians now embrace rappers with obscene lyrics but are hostile to something called "The LEGO Movie." This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, May 28th, 2015:

HISTORY'S MOST BORING SPEAKER SUDDENLY NOT SO BORING - It'll be a political battle for the ages between him and Rod Blagojevich over laundry duty. Jon Seidel: "Federal prosecutors on Thursday charged former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert with illegally structuring cash withdrawals from bank accounts to make payments to someone he committed 'prior misconduct' against and lying to the FBI about it. Hastert, 73, of Plano, is accused of splitting up the withdrawal of $952,000 to avoid the requirement that banks report withdrawals of more than $10,000. When asked about it by the FBI in the December 2014, he allegedly lied and said he was keeping the cash. In 2010, Hastert agreed to pay an individual, who is unnamed in the indictment, $3.5 million 'to compensate for and conceal his prior misconduct' against the person, according to the indictment.'" [Sun Times]

HUFFPOST HILL FACTS OF LIFE: Your Hastert Rule joke is terrible.

PATAKI ANNOUNCES PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN, DESPONDENT OPPONENTS WONDER IF IT'S EVEN WORTH IT AT THIS POINT - But seriously, George Pataki trying to own 9/11 feels a bit like Ringo best trying to own "Sgt. Pepper's." Daniel Marans: "Former New York Gov. George Pataki (R) announced he'll run for president in 2016. 'The system is broken. The question is no longer about what our government should do, but what we should do about our government,' he said in a video posted to YouTube on Thursday. Pataki, 69, who served as governor from 1995 to 2006, faces an uphill battle for the Republican nomination in a crowded field of candidates....Pataki also faces skepticism over whether he is conservative enough to win Republican primaries. His record as governor of deep-blue New York, and his career in Republican politics prior to the party’s turn to the right, make him the most moderate Republican presidential candidate to date. Pataki has supportedenvironmental preservation efforts, abortion rights and gun control laws. When The New York Times endorsed Pataki's bid for a third term as governor in 2002, the paper praised his 'generally progressive stance on social issues.'" [HuffPost]

HILL STAFFER CHARGED WITH DEFRAUDING VULNERABLE WOMEN - And we don't just mean for advocating Social Security cuts. Hannah Hess: "Known as a fixture on Capitol Hill until his January 2010 retirement, longtime Senate staffer Robert Lee Foster is now making headlines... A Virginia grand jury on Thursday indicted the 65-year-old man, who worked as a staffer on the Senate Commerce Committee for more than three decades, on nine counts of wire fraud, allegedly connected to his Senate Federal Credit Union account. The grand jury charged that Foster defrauded at least three women of approximately $500,000, from 2008 through May 2015. He allegedly used his affiliation with the Senate to gain the trust and confidence of a 54-year-old recent widow from California, a 70-year-old stroke victim from Texas and a 75-year-old D.C. resident who was taking care of a partner suffering from dementia. The indictment alleges Foster falsely claimed he needed the money for debt repayment, legal costs, business expenses or foreign travel, according to court documents. He also pretended his credit card had been “hacked,” the government said. Foster allegedly promised to repay the loans, which ranged from $5,300 to $150, but spent the money for his own personal benefit." [Roll Call]

"Ted Cruz, charlatan." Dang, Dana!

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Local reporter Mark Segraves reports via Twitter that the D.C. government knew about dangerous amounts of lead in the decrepit family homeless shelter at the former D.C. General Hospital site on east Capitol Hill: "BREAKING: DC officials knew about dangerous lead levels at DC General homeless shelter in 2014 but allowed families to live in those rooms." Segraves previously reported that two of the many, many children living at the shelter had recently tested positive for lead. [@SegravesNBC4]

New look Rick Santorum in nothing but Canada Goose parkas, day and night: "The newly-announced presidential candidate -- known for his signature sweater vests -- may be sporting an updated look in 2016. 'I have two daughters who are the fashion consultants -- they've appointed themselves the fashion consultants to the campaign and so you're going to be seeing attire that reflects their tastes, not mine,' Santorum told ABC News’ Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos Wednesday. In 2012, sales of Santorum-branded sweater vests reportedly netted $300,000 for the campaign– and spawned a number of parody accounts on Twitter." [ABC News]

HUFFPOST HILL FACTS OF LIFE: Do fashion consultants like, not understand brands?

MOAR SIDNEY BLUMENTHAL DEVELOPMENTS, MOAR BLURRING OF CLINTON BIZNEZZZ!!!! - Wonder if Blumenthal also got some extra coin to help Clinton with her southern accent. Ken Vogel: "Sidney Blumenthal, a longtime confidant of Bill and Hillary Clinton, earned about $10,000 a month as a full-time employee of the Clinton Foundation while he was providing unsolicited intelligence on Libya to then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, according to multiple sources familiar with the arrangement. Blumenthal was added to the payroll of the Clintons’ global philanthropy in 2009 -- not long after advising Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign -- at the behest of former president Bill Clinton, for whom he had worked in the White House, say the sources. While Blumenthal’s foundation job focused on highlighting the legacy of Clinton’s presidency, some officials at the charity questioned his value and grumbled that his hiring was a favor from the Clintons, according to people familiar with the foundation. They say that, during a 2013 reform push, Blumenthal was moved to a consulting contract that came with a similar pay rate but without benefits — an arrangement that endured until March." [Politico]

Old people love Bernie: "'Would you raise the top marginal tax rate to over 90 percent, as it was in the 1950s, when the middle class and the economy were doing so well?' asked Milt Lauenstein, 89, who had the same white hair and hunched posture as Mr. Sanders. 'You mean under the communist Dwight D. Eisenhower?' Mr. Sanders quipped about the former president, who, of course, was a Republican, but one who did not oppose high taxes as fiercely as party leaders do now. It is not every day in 2015 that an Ike joke gets a laugh, but Mr. Sanders landed the line perfectly -- at least for the roughly 50 older people in the crowd of 200 who came out to meet the candidate in a backyard here. It was the latest Sanders event to draw a sizable number of registered voters who share not only Mr. Sanders’s cultural reference points but also his age group." [NYT]

Old people aren't cool, unlike ultrasounds: "Scott Walker is using Marco Rubio's birthday to offer a not-so-subtle reminder: Most of the rest of the presidential field is much older. Walker, the 47-year-old Wisconsin governor, tweeted a birthday greeting to Rubio, the Florida senator who turned 44 on Thursday, saying it comes 'from one forty-something to another.'" [CNN]

UNDECIDED REPUBLICAN PRIMARY VOTERS STILL LEADING THE WAY - But undecided has been a rubber stamp for the Obama agenda and hasn't outlined a clear plan for our fight against ISIS. Natalie Jackson: "A new Quinnipiac University national poll shows there’s still only one clear leader in the Republican presidential primary race: Undecided. The poll, released Thursday, reports that 20 percent of registered Republican and Republican-leaning voters around the country don’t know or declined to answer whom they would vote for in their state's Republican primary. This is double the proportion any candidate received: The five candidates with the highest percentages all struggled to reach double digits, with a mere 10 percent each. Those candidates are former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, retired physician Ben Carson, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. The relatively high number of uncommitted Republicans nationally is consistent with polls of likely primary voters in early primary states. In March, a Suffolk University poll of 500 likely Republican primary voters in New Hampshire reported 24 percent undecided after respondents were given a list of candidates. Without the list, however, 55 percent couldn’t name a candidate they would support." [HuffPost]

Awful Ted Cruz rap is awful. My name is Ted Cruz and i'm here to say, freedom is funky fresh, unless you're gay! "Entitled 'We Are Watchmen,' the song explicitly namechecks Cruz and employs his #MakeDCListen motto. This scribe’s favorite line is 'When power is concentrated centrally and federally / It creates dependency that’s medically like leprosy,' but feel free to choose your own." [Mediaite]

Everything is awwwfuuulllllll : "A concerted propaganda effort underway in America has created a 'cultural attitude' in which people believe 'government is good and business is bad,' Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), told a local reporter for WisPolitics.com.Johnson said the latest evidence of this propaganda campaign is The Lego Movie, in which the bad guy is a heartless businessman intent on destroying the world for profit. 'That's done for a reason,' Johnson said. 'They're starting that propaganda, and it's insidious.' The local blog included the comments in its statewide newsletter." [Grim]

Two hours after Grim's story goes up, Johnson himself, who ignored requests for comment, responds with a surly blog reaffirming his view that The Lego Movie, which grossed $450 million at the box office and is basically one long toy advertisement, is anti-business.

GRAHAM LEAVING TAKING DANGER ZONE ONRAMP TO HIGHWAY - We never got that volleyball montage. Rebecca Kaplan: "Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, announced Thursday that he will reluctantly retire from the Air Force Reserves, where he had been promoted to the rank of colonel over his decades of service. 'I will turn 60 in July which is the retirement age for Air Force Reserves. I would continue to serve but the time has come for me to retire,' [he tweeted]...Graham is one of three senators serving in the Guard or Reserves (the other two are Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst and Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan, both Republicans). His most recent position was a Senior Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Judge Advocate General. Before he became a member of Congress, Graham was on active duty from 1982 to 1988, including a four-year posting at Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany. Editor's Pick: 5 Reasons Jony Ive's Step Back Is Apple's Step Forward

Posted: 28 May 2015 02:37 PM PDT

Chris Maxcer

There seem to be two major reactions to the "promotion" of Apple's Jonathan Ive to the newly created position of chief design officer: first, that he deserves the recognition and reward; and second, that this is the beginning of the end for Jony Ive's tenure at Apple. Apple released the news in the UK... on Monday, which was the Memorial Day holiday in the United States. [More...]

No Wrongdoing at NCIS, Says Defense Watchdog
The U.S. Department of Defense's Inspector General has rejected allegations that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service engaged in questionable domestic intelligence activity. The finding concluded a DoD IG probe spurred by allegations that NCIS was making available to military intelligence agencies its Law Enforcement Information Exchange, a database of 506.3 million law enforcement records. Linux/Moose Malware Wreaks Havoc on Social Networks
Internet security researchers at Eset on Tuesday published a security research paper on Linux/Moose, a major threat to social networks that turns routers into conduits for grabbing users' log-in credentials, employing them for network fraud and to further spread malware to client devices that connect through them to the Internet. The paper, "Dissecting Linux/Moose," details a months-long investigation. [More...]

#TBT: The woman formerly known as

Posted: 28 May 2015 02:20 PM PDT

This week's featured post from our archive is by Jessica Rapisarda.

The Woman Formerly Known As

jessica rapisarda

When I was born, I was named Jessica. My dad says he lobbied for Angela or Angelina, but I've never had what it takes to be an Angie Rapisarda. And there are only so many times I can explain how someone with a warm Sicilian last name has skin that suggests long hours spent in dark, wood-panelled rooms eating schnitzel.

So "Jessica" fits. Its anonymity deflects from the conspicuousness of my surname. I don't love my name, but I don't love a glass of water or a gulp of air. It does its job. Its job is important.

2014-10-02-415723_3588479511550_788791232_o.jpg

Jess, circa May 2012

Then I became pregnant, and with each passing month, as my stomach expanded, my name seemed to contract. For everyone who called me "Jess," there were an equal number of folks calling me "mom-to-be."

"How are you feeling, mom-to-be?"

"Hey there, mama-to-be. How many more months to go?"

I felt excited, like a fresh-faced sorority pledge. Granted, it was the least exclusive sorority in the history of womankind, but for 36 years, I'd been watching its secret rites from a quiet, well-rested distance. "Mom-to-be" reminded me that others appreciated the enormity of my initiation.

Yet a humble little remembrance wormed its way out of the dark to nag at me. Years before I had even met my husband, let alone married or thought of having kids, I visited a friend who was several months pregnant with her second child. We hadn't seen each other in months, not since just before she found out that her strange change in appetite was more than just a passing bug.

We stood on her wraparound porch, in the bracing light of winter, looking out at the dips and curves of the valley surrounding her home. I marveled at her belly, but mostly we talked about our latest writing ventures, our families, and news of mutual acquaintances.

"It's good to talk to a friend," she said, "someone who remembers your name, ya know?"

I felt my brow crinkle, a look clearly indicating that I did not know.

She rested her forearm across her stomach. "People forget who you are when you become a mom. It's like they forget you're a woman, an individual even. You're suddenly just 'mom.'"

And though I understood her words, I still didn't really know. But by my own second trimester, I was at least getting the gist.

2014-10-02-416864_4614261635462_839657998_n.jpg

Jess-ish, September 2012

When my son was born in early 2013, "Jessica" was abruptly shunted aside. But it was to be expected for a while. In the first week after his birth, I needed to hear other people say "mother" and know that they meant me, to be reminded that, yes, the child was mine. "Mama loves you," I murmured, while rocking my newborn to sleep. Everyone was trying out the new name, like a freshly minted "husband" and "wife" on their honeymoon.

2014-09-30-575607_10100731624370747_102129710_n.jpg

The Woman Formerly Known as Jess, February 2013

My dad had gently told me, when I was newly pregnant, that life would never be the same. A pretty obvious statement, if I'd ever heard one. Of course life wouldn't be the same, I thought: kids require love, food, money, space. But within a few short weeks of my son's birth, nothing seemed obvious anymore.

Once I was a woman who took road trips for the hell of it. Once I was a woman who spent half of an hour each morning applying moisturizer and makeup. Once I was a woman who wrote stories, who read stories, who had time on her hands. Once I was not a mother.

Between the psychological whiplash, the sleep deprivation, and the claustrophobic cold of February, I felt slightly insane. Everyone who called, stopped by, or sent a card called me "mom" or "mama" or "mommy" -- as though my one child had multiplied 20 times over.

It took months for me to reestablish old routines (like showering) and to break free of the postpartum haze. I grieved the life I'd had before my son, but I realized that I was no less myself just because my schedule didn't permit a lengthy beauty regimen.

Months rolled by, a year even, and my new world order felt a little more broken in. But coworkers, distant relatives, even the grocery store cashier still echoed the same refrain: "How ya doin', mom?" I thought better of being honest, of saying, "Well, I used to go by Jessica, so I'm experiencing a pretty intense identity crisis right now."

There is no malice in "mom." I've used the m-word many times. "Mom" is shorthand for "I acknowledge that you have a child, congratulations, welcome, try to breathe, this is going to last for at least 18 years."

But "Jessica," my dime-a-dozen first name, is shorthand for something much more complex. It contains the little girl playing with Barbies and the angsty teenager playing The Cure. It holds my college years, my grad school years, and the years in between when I folded khakis at the mall for a living. There's a career in that name, a marriage, and 10 different addresses. "Jessica" wrote poems in her diary at 13, and "Jessica" wakes at 5 a.m., a few quiet hours before her son stirs in his crib, to write an essay on her laptop. "Jessica" contains "mother."

I love being a mom. When I watch my son on the baby monitor, curled around his stuffed elephant, I am awed that he is of me. And I am not even bothered that my very best piece of work has already been made, that nothing I type will ever top him.

There are times, though, when I am out with old friends or alone with my husband, and I hear my name, and it's as though a door swings open. And inside is a room packed with neatly labeled boxes and bins: "First ballet recital, 1981," "Trip to Madrid, 1999," "Christmas with Shelby, 2012," "Early mornings at the kitchen table, 2014." And I think to myself, "Oh, thank God, it's all still here."

'Hope' Artist Calls Obama a Failure
Shepard Fairey, who designed the famous "HOPE" poster of Barack Obama in 2008, says he's disappointed in the man he partially helped elect as president. Esquire asked Fairey if he thinks Obama has lived up to his poster. "Not even close," Fairey said. "Obama has had a really tough time, but there have been a lot of things that he's compromised on that I never would have expected. I mean, drones and domestic spying are the last things I would have thought [he'd support]."

Christie: Common Core Is 'Not Working'
Though he once supported Common Core education standards, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has declared that the standards are "simply not working" and proposed dropping them. While speaking at a New Jersey college on Thursday, Christie said he wants to assemble a team to develop a group that will work on "new standards right here in New Jersey, not 200 miles away on the banks of the Potomac River." The possilble Republican presidential candidate said Common Core "has brought only confusion and frustration to our parents and has brought distance between our teachers and the communities where they work. Instead of solving problems in our classrooms, it is creating new ones." The standards, proposed by the Obama administration, are largely hated on the right.

FIFA Prez: I Can't Monitor Everyone
FIFA President Sepp Blatter deflected blame for the corruption unearthed yesterday by U.S. and Swiss law enforcement, saying it was the actions of a "tiny minority." Blatter spoke at the opening of the annual FIFA congress. "I cannot monitor everyone all of the time," he said. "If people want to do wrong they will also try to hide it. But it must fall to me to bear the responsibility for the reputation and wellbeing of our organization and to find a way forward to fix things." Blatter is up for re-election for a fifth term as president on Friday.

Nebraska to Give Licenses to DREAMers
For the second time in two days, Nebraska legislators have overrode a veto by Gov. Pete Ricketts, this time authorizing the state to give drivers' licenses to children of undocumented immigrants who are eligible for temporary residence in the U.S. (known as DREAMers). "The bill is wrong on principle, and the bill is overly broad," the Republican governor said, explaining fears that it would apply to more people than intended. Legislators disagreed, voting 34-10 to override him. "It's unfortunate that Gov. Ricketts has decided to try to score cheap political points by attacking bright young immigrants with a legal presence in our country," said bill sponsor Jeremy Norquist.

Emails: UBS Boss Rigged Interest Rates
The alleged ringleader of a global currency-trading scandal that involves $350 trillion worth of financial derivatives got help from his boss at banking giant UBS, prosecutors in London said Thursday. Tom Hayes's UBS manager, Mike Pieri, is documented asking for slightly lower interest rates to suit Hayes's trades in emails presented in court. "We really need some cooperation on the yen Libors [the interest rate] from those who input," Pieri wrote. A follow-up email noted that he got some concessions from Hayes: "We will be a little bit lower. Every bit helps." The emails shown in court also demonstrate some internal dissent about the legality of those moves.

Chicago Bulls Fire Coach Tom Thibodeau
The Chicago Bulls have fired coach Tom Thibodeau as part of a "change in approach" for the team, general manager Gar Forman said Thursday after the Bulls lost to Cleveland in the Eastern Conference finals. "When Tom was hired in 2010, he was right for our team and system at that time, and over the last five years we have had some success with Tom as our head coach," Forman said in a statement. "But as we looked ahead of evaluated how we as a team and an organization could continue to grow and improve, we believed a change in approach was needed." Thibodeau had two years and around $9 million left on his contract. Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg is currently the front-runner to replace Thibodeau.

The video for the three-term governor dwells heavily on footage of the Freedom Tower and 9/11 memorial, as he is widely expected to tout his experience during the 2001 attacks during his campaign. Transit Alert - Bus & Link light rail service will not serve the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel on 5/30-31

Posted: 28 May 2015 12:10 PM PDT

On Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31, transit service that normally operates in the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel (DSTT) will operate instead via surface streets and stops, and Link light rail will not travel north of Stadium Station, while work is done to prepare for the expansion of Link service in 2016.

During the weekend tunnel closure:
- All downtown tunnel stations will be closed.
- The Metro-operated Link Shuttle Route 97 will operate.
- All bus stops on the SODO Busway will be open, and bus service will
operate via normal routes and stops.
- Metro bus routes 41, 71, 72, 73 & 255 heading toward Northgate, the
University District or Kirkland respectively, will travel through downtown
Seattle via Fourth Avenue and Olive Way; heading south into downtown
Seattle they will travel via Second Avenue.
- Metro routes 101, 106 and 150 heading to their south end destinations,
and Sound Transit Route 550 to Bellevue, will travel through downtown
Seattle via Stewart St and Second Avenue; heading north into town they
  will travel via Fourth Avenue.
Link light rail service will operate as usual in both directions between Sea Tac
  Airport and Stadium Station.

To connect with Link light rail at Stadium or SODO stations from downtown Seattle, ride Metro routes 101, 106 or 150 southbound on Second Avenue, or the Link Shuttle Route 97 about every ten minutes westbound on Pine St at Fifth Avenue, southbound on Third Avenue at Union or James streets, or southbound on Fifth Avenue S just south of S Jackson Street.

To get in to downtown Seattle from SODO or Stadium stations, board any bus northbound on the SODO Busway at S Lander St or S Royal Brougham Way.

DSTT buses operating surface street routing and the Link Shuttle Route 97 serve designated bus stops. Visit Metro’s DSTT or Service Advisories pages to find out the routing and stops for specific routes.

In addition to delays that are likely to result from the tunnel closure itself, weekend Mariners games, Sunday’s Sounders FC match, construction projects along downtown streets and other events are expected to cause intermittent congestion and delays. Transit customers in the downtown area, and other areas served by the affected routes, are advised to allow plenty of time for their transit trips on May 30 and 31.

Visit Metro Online for complete transit information and links to Metro’s regional partners.

For information about Link light rail visit Sound Transit’s website.

Thank you for your patience and for using Metro’s services.

Today's Story Highlights

No Wrongdoing at NCIS, Says Defense Watchdog
The U.S. Department of Defense's Inspector General has rejected
allegations that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service engaged in
questionable domestic intelligence activity. The finding concluded a DoD
IG probe spurred by allegations that NCIS was making available to
military intelligence agencies its Law Enforcement Information Exchange,
a database of 506.3 million law enforcement records.

Splatoon: Nintendo Seeks Bloodless Coup in Online Shooter Genre
With its bloodless battles of attrition between squads of human-squid
chimeras, twitch-shooter Splatoon oozes classic Nintendo charm that has
enamored many early reviewers. It takes a crack at the competitive
shooter genre, but instead of the visceral shock of bullet wounds,
blood, and the wails of the wounded, Splatoon supplies brightly colored
ink to wield in chaotic matches.

Linux/Moose Malware Wreaks Havoc on Social Networks
Internet security researchers at Eset on Tuesday published a security
research paper on Linux/Moose, a major threat to social networks that
turns routers into conduits for grabbing users' log-in credentials,
employing them for network fraud and to further spread malware to client
devices that connect through them to the Internet. The paper,
"Dissecting Linux/Moose," details a months-long investigation.
