Making Room for Grief Within the Church

"I have felt most accepted through my entire grieving process by people who are not Christians. Non-Christians haven't put expectations on me. They let me be me. They don't tell me to "stay strong" or to "keep the faith." They let me sit. They let me cry. They let me have bad days. They let me be cynical. And they still take me as I am. Not 'babying" me. Not pitying me. Just seeing me as a person, and letting me be whatever I need to be." Read more.

How Science Made Me A Stronger Muslim

"Growing up, I was taught to always speak the truth, to be kind to others, to serve humanity in all ways possible, and to never expect any form of thanks in return. Selfless service, as I was taught, was at the core of Islam. I remember reading the Koran from a very early age and reflecting over its commentary on a regular basis." Read more.

THE NUTGRAF

News outlets hate giving up editorial control, especially when it's a comes to a sought-after broadcast they only get a crack at every four years. So Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus claim he wasn't going to allow George Stephanopoulos to moderate ABC News' Republican debate -- even before it came to light that the newscaster had made donations to the Clinton Foundation. But ABC News pushed back Friday, saying the network decides who moderates. Either way, the dispute is likely one of many such spats to expect this election season, as political parties advocate for the most desired conditions for their candidates before getting under the klieg lights.

PULLQUOTE

I am prepared to tell this young person the truth about life. I'm not sure that they will come like that. I think many of them say, 'Well, you're a hypocrite. You say one thing, you say the other.' My point is, okay listen to me carefully. I'm telling you where the road is out. I'm telling you where you're driving you're going to go into water and it looks like it might only be three inches deep, but you and your car are going to go down. You want to go here or you want to be concerned about who's giving the message?”

SR 520 News of the Week

Posted: 15 May 2015 03:08 PM PDT

Expect highway lane and Montlake street closures in upcoming weeks

Overnight closures of eastbound SR 520 set for May 18 and 20

Late-night drivers on SR 520 should expect overnight closures of the highway's eastbound lanes in Seattle on Monday, May 18 and Wednesday, May 20. The eastbound lanes will close from Montlake Boulevard to the on-ramp from Lake Washington Boulevard. The eastbound off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard and the eastbound on-ramp from Lake Washington Boulevard will remain open. The closures will last from 11 p.m. Monday until 5 a.m. Tuesday, and 11 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday.

The closures mean eastbound traffic from I-5 on those two nights will have to exit at Montlake Boulevard. The Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 also will be closed overnight. Motorists wanting to reach the Eastside from Seattle are encouraged to use I-90. Crews working on SR 520's West Approach Bridge North Project will use the closures to complete the installation of a new combined sewer line beneath the highway.

You can get the latest information on scheduled SR 520 closures and construction activity on our SR 520 Orange Page.

Sunday's Beat the Bridge race means street, bridge closures in Montlake

The annual Beat the Bridge charity walk and 8K run is Sunday, May 17, and that means drivers should expect congestion and traffic delays on a number of Montlake-area streets and the two bridges across the Montlake Cut in Seattle. SR 520 and its floating bridge will remain open on Sunday, but the highway's westbound off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard will be closed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Montlake Bridge also will be closed during that time, along with the left-turn lane onto Montlake Boulevard from SR 520's eastbound off-ramp to Montlake.

The race begins Sunday morning in front of Husky Stadium, moves south across the Montlake Bridge, then heads north across the University Bridge before winding its way back to Husky Stadium.

East Lake Washington Boulevard closing for utility work the weekends of May 29 and June 5

WSDOT and city of Seattle crews will work around the clock for two consecutive weekends to replace old water and electrical utility lines. Completing this work requires crews to close all lanes and sidewalks of East Lake Washington Boulevard from Montlake Boulevard to East Roanoke Street. Between East Roanoke Street and the SR 520 ramps leading to Lake Washington Boulevard, just the northbound lane of Lake Washington Boulevard will be closed, while the southbound lane will remain open.  All SR 520 on- and off-ramps will remain open as well.

The lanes will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday, May 29 to 6 a.m. Monday, June 1, and from 7 p.m. Friday, June 5 to 6 a.m. Monday, June 8.

Crews will maintain access for bicyclists and pedestrians in the Montlake area. Bicyclists and pedestrians will be detoured from 24th Avenue East to the north side of a barrier on Lake Washington Boulevard. For more information, refer to this PDF flier on our website.

Construction cameras in Medina temporarily unavailable

Did you know you can watch the progress of SR 520 construction from the comfort of your own living room? We have construction cameras at each of our construction sites that capture our crews' work every few minutes. You can find the photos on our website. Construction activities periodically require us to move these cameras, and this recently happened with our most popular camera – the one that monitors construction activities on the new floating bridge from Medina.

The week of May 4, crews began to dismantle the 250-foot tower crane in Medina that we employed to help build the bridge's east high-rise. With the recent installation of the final piece of the high-rise transition span, the crane is no longer needed. The camera, previously mounted on the crane, will be moved to a new location later this month. We will post an update on our website when the camera is reactivated. In the meantime, our website still offers photos of floating bridge construction from days gone by.

Frida Kahlo's style tips

This week we're talking about floral art in Detroit, grrrl power video games, the costume design of "Mad Men," Jim Shepard's new novel, and Yoko Ono's distinct breed of celebrity.

This Flower-Filled Abandoned House Is Bringing A Bit Of Life Back To Detroit

putting together chair

"Branches of bright yellow forsythia hung over the doorways, catching visitors' hair as they walked through the home, now owned by florist Lisa Waud. Grape hyacinths sprouted up through the floorboards that a month ago had been hidden by several feet of debris, left behind by from the house's former owners. White flowers sat in the crumbling toilet. Moss oozed out of the corners. Foliage pushed through one wall's wooden slats, exposed by the worn-down plaster. This was Waud's trial run for the 'Flower House.'" (Read more here)

It's Time To Stop Hating Yoko Ono

2015-05-14-1431624940-7054954-ezgif.comgifmaker1.gif

"Yoko Ono hate has, for decades, formed a dark fog around the involuntary celebrity, obscuring her immense contributions to visual, sound and conceptual art. Her name is often associated with loaded, sexist and racist terminology such as 'dragon lady,' 'home-wrecker' and 'fucking psycho.' As Lennon himself said, she's 'the world's most famous unknown artist: everybody knows her name, but nobody knows what she does.'" (Read more here)

Why You Should Take Style Tips From Frida Kahlo's Closet

"[Photographer Ishiuchi Miyako] ended up shooting 300 artifacts with her 35mm camera, resulting in a comprehensive collection of the very physical traces of Kahlo's existence. For her part, Ishiuchi knew very little of the wild Mexican artist beforehand. She came to know her through her belongings, through corsets and boots, prosthetics and polish. To Ishiuchi, these accessories told a story." (Read more here)

How To Write A Holocaust Novel: A Conversation With Jim Shepard

book of aron

"[Jim] Shepard's gift for drawing out the most elemental, human narratives against a backdrop of tremendous scale reaches its apex in The Book of Aron, a haunting novel told from the perspective of a young boy struggling to survive in the Warsaw ghetto in the final, grim years of Nazi power. He spoke with me, despite the inauspicious weather, about the book, making art about the Holocaust, and the authors who inspired him to write." (Read more here)

This Grrrl Power Video Game Is Everything That's Right About The '90s

grrlpower

"Long before Zoe Quinn's moving attempt to enlighten others about the experience of mood disorders through her interactive fiction game Depression Quest, Theresa Duncan was making waves with her feminist CD-ROMs. And although Quinn's work, which brought her under harsh scrutiny by misogynistic gamers who gathered under a single hashtag (#gamergate) last fall, was considered by many to be a welcome disruption of a male-driven industry, Duncan was making games by, about and for girls (and grrrls) decades earlier." A 'Mad Men' Costume Designer Tells A Story Through Fashion

mad men

"Beyond being one of the most well-written, finely sculpted dramas on television, Matthew Weiner's 'Mad Men' will also be remembered for beautifully capturing and recreating the essence of the 1960s. Much of the iconic visual storytelling in the AMC series is thanks to the vision and creativity of costume designer Janie Bryant, who has been with the show since the beginning of its run. Not only has Bryant further helped define each character through their distinct styles, especially during an era of such magnificent fashion, but her wardrobes have also informed some of the show's most memorable storylines." How One Music Critic Is Changing The Future For Women Writers

unnamed

"Hopper's feminism has always been an important part of her relationship with music, and through her work, she's become one of the leading advocates for other female writers on the Internet. She regularly solicits pitches and shines spotlights on younger writers' work. 'This title is not meant to erase history but rather mark a path,' she wrote in her book's introduction. 'This book is dedicated to those that came before, those that should of been first, and all the ones that will come after.' It's a sentiment that easily sums up her take on music and mentorship, too." (Read more here)

Why Smart Women Watch (And Love) 'The Bachelor'

the bachelorette

"Most of my peers have a love-hate relationship with 'The Bachelor' franchise -- specifically, we hate that we love it. The underlying messages of the shows are beyond terrible. We're essentially told that all women in their twenties should be desperately searching for a man to marry (most of the 30-something bachelorettes are portrayed as a particular breed of desperate), and that women are, in general, complete and utter nutjobs. Although, of course, this only applies to white women, as people of color rarely get cast. Yet even knowing all of these things, season after season, droves of intelligent, successful women come back to ABC and host Chris Harrison for more." (Read more here)

13 things in life that are not a competition.

Posted: 15 May 2015 02:40 PM PDT

Some things in life, like triathlons and standardized tests, are competitions.

Others just are not.

In any group conversation, see how long it takes for commiseration to turn into one-upmanship. "Oh, your roommate leaves out dirty dishes? I totally understand your pain. Mine invites drug dealers over and breeds kittens in the bathtub." "Your husband is out of town for work this week? Poor you. Mine was overseas for six months without Internet access, it was brutal."

I like to believe that most of this competitiveness does truly come from a place of empathy, but it's time to take a step back.

Here are 13 things in life that just aren't a competition (so stop it already):

1. Who is the busiest. Busy is cool now, which is great if you're someone who needs a million self-imposed obligations to feel happy and productive. But being a person who takes time for herself in the form of nights spent watching Netflix is cool, too.

2. Who wears the smallest clothing size. Oh, you wear a children's medium? Good for you.

3. Who is the most stressed. Being part of a conversation where everyone brags about how stressed they are and tries to come out on top as the Queen Of Stress is quite demoralizing. Why is no one trying to compete for the title of "most zen?"

HUFFPOST HILL - People Who Punch Me In The Face Are People, My Friend

Posted: 15 May 2015 02:02 PM PDT

HuffPost Hill
By Eliot Nelson & Arthur Delaney
Mitt Romney says his son will procure him a red silk robe for his upcoming boxing match with Evander Holyfield; we don't get why Romney needs his son to fetch things from the robe closet. The House approved billions of dollars for a war it hasn't authorized, which we're calling the "Why Don't You Go Out And Bomb Yourself Something Nice" Authorization Act. And in the wake of the Washington Capitals' loss to the New York Rangers, we're surprised no Financial Services Committee members have held a "New York Always Wins!" fundraiser and invited a bunch of Goldman Sachs lobbyists. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Friday, May 15th, 2015:

DEATH SENTENCE FOR TSARNAEV - Katharine Seelye: "Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a failed college student, sat stone-faced in a federal court here on Friday as a jury sentenced him , to death for setting off bombs at the 2013 Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured hundreds more in the worst terrorist attack on American soil since Sept. 11, 2001. The jury of seven women and five men, which last month convicted Mr. Tsarnaev, 21, of all 30 charges against him, 17 of which carry the death penalty, took more than 14 hours to reach its decision…. The Tsarnaev verdict goes against the grain in Massachusetts, which has no death penalty for state crimes and where polls showed that residents overwhelmingly favored life in prison for Mr. Tsarnaev…. But the jurors in his case had to be 'death qualified' -- that is, they all had to be willing to impose the death penalty to serve on the jury. So in that sense, the jury was not representative of the state." [NYT]

Where we're at on the list of countries with capital punishment.

LORETTA LYNCH: "We know all too well that no verdict can heal the souls of those who lost loved ones, nor the minds and bodies of those who suffered life-changing injuries from this cowardly attack. But the ultimate penalty is a fitting punishment for this horrific crime and we hope that the completion of this prosecution will bring some measure of closure to the victims and their families."

NOBODY HAPPY WITH JEB THIS WEEK - McKay Coppins: "Jeb Bush has drawn derision from all quarters of the political world this week for his bumbling response to questions about the 2003 invasion of Iraq -- but some of the sharpest criticism is now coming from his own brother’s orbit. In interviews with more than half a dozen Republican foreign policy hands and veterans of the George W. Bush administration, the reaction to Jeb’s dithering on Iraq ranged from disappointment to disbelief. 'No, it was not handled well by Gov. Bush… I don’t know why he said what he did,' said Ari Fleischer, who served as White House press secretary for Bush 43 at the beginning of the war." [BuzzFeed]

HOUSE PASSES FRANKENSTEIN NDAA - Hey, at least it didn't defund ACORN. Jen Bendery: "The House passed legislation Friday that clears the path for spending tens of billions of dollars on overseas wars, including the one against Islamic State militants that Congress still hasn't authorized. Lawmakers voted 269-151 to pass the fiscal 2016 National Defense Authorization Act, which would, among other things, permit Congress to spend $89.2 billion on war funding. Republicans allowed 135 amendments to the bill, which covered topics ranging from immigration to remotely piloted aircraft to fire hoses being exempt from certain purchasing requirements. But they shut out any debate on the need for an Authorization for Use of Military Force to put limits on the months-long war against the Islamic State. At the same time, the defense bill authorizes spending billions more fighting the group also known as ISIS. A handful of lawmakers tried to attach AUMF amendments to the legislation, but were denied." [HuffPost]

WARREN, SANDERS PRESSURE OBAMA ON MIN WAGE - Dave Jamieson: "The Fight for $15 labor movement has found some high-profile allies in the U.S. Senate, and now they're asking President Barack Obama to get onboard. In a letter to the White House led by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Friday, 18 senators, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), asked Obama to issue a 'model employer' executive order, which would give contracting preference to firms that pay a living wage, offer health care and sick leave, and guarantee union rights for workers. 'Mr. President, the stroke of your pen can have transformative impact for millions of workers,' the letter states. 'As low-wage fast food, retail and federal contract workers continue to strike in growing numbers to 'Fight for $15 and a Union,' we urge you to harness the power of the presidency to help these workers achieve the American Dream.'" RICHARD PERLE THINKS HYPOTHETICAL IRAQ QUESTIONS ARE DUMB - Because obviously the outcome of the war has been terrible. Sam Stein: "The former Defense Department adviser, who was one of the key figures crafting the policy for invasion in 2003, isn't interested in what what politicians today would do if they could go back in time and vote on the authorization. Far more important, he says, is what they would have done in that specific moment, with that specific intelligence, in that political climate. 'I would not attach a lot of weight to anybody’s answer to this question, particularly to a candidate's answer,' Perle told The Huffington Post in an interview. 'You give the answer that you think is going to offend the fewest number of people whose votes you want and please the largest number of people whose votes you want, and you’ve got to do it in a sentence or two. I think the conventional wisdom is that Iraq was a mistake. So the easiest answer is going to be: I wouldn’t have done it.'" [HuffPost]

BOEHNER DELIVERS TURD ENGULFED IN FLAMES TO MITCH MCCONNELL'S DOORSTEP - The majority leader has pointed to his charred, feces-smeared loafers as evidence that the Senate is working again. Julian Hattem: "Mitch McConnell is in a bind. The Senate majority leader opposes changes to the National Security Agency, but his proposal to reauthorize surveillance powers under the Patriot Act 'cleanly' is unlikely to pass the upper chamber. After the House increased the pressure Wednesday with an overwhelming vote in favor of an NSA reform bill, McConnell (R-Ky.) began to look for an escape hatch, filing legislation Thursday evening that would push the June 1 deadline back by two months. But it's unclear whether a short-term extension could pass the Senate, let alone the House, where reform supporters are vowing to oppose any stopgap legislation. With the deadline looming, McConnell has little time left to find a way out and save the spy powers he has called critical for national security. 'He’s really in a box,' Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said Wednesday before the House vote. 'With all due respect, he’s in a box that the courts have made for him, so to speak, by correctly interpreting the law.' McConnell insists he has no intention of following the lead of the House, which voted 338-88 to end the NSA’s bulk collection of records on Americans’ telephone calls." [The Hill]

MOLOTOV! - Rosie Gray: "There was no [politically adventurous] moment on [Scott Walker's] trip to Israel. He played it safe — very safe. The trip was everything you’d expect and little more: Walker visited with Netanyahu and opposition leader Isaac Herzog; he visited with other members of the Knesset; he visited Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial, and the Western Wall; he flew around the country in a helicopter. It’s arguably the safest plan a politician’s aides could dream up — mostly politically correct, uncontroversial, boring enough to keep press from even wanting to cover it, and all designed to keep him out of trouble. Other trips to Israel by lower-tier candidates this cycle have been more adventurous: Ben Carson visited settlements in the West Bank during his Israel trip in December, according to Dayan, and Mike Huckabee visits often. Visiting settlements in the West Bank— or Judea and Samaria, the biblical terms used by Dayan and other settlers for the area — is a Rubicon not yet crossed by the major presidential candidates this cycle, though." [BuzzFeed]

E PRIEBUS UNUM - The campaign to get James O'Keefe to host every GOP debate starts here (after opening statements the candidates will be asked to respond to Charles C. Johnson tweets). Michael Calderone: "Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Thursday night that ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos "was never going to moderate a Republican debate anyway," suggesting the party has the power to prevent a network from assigning the journalist of its choice...In Thursday's interview on Fox News' 'Hannity,' Priebus said his concerns about Stephanopoulos moderating stemmed not from the donations, but rather the anchor's previous role as Bill Clinton's communications director during the 1992 election and his first term in the White House. 'How can I, as chairman of the national party, have the former employee of the Clintons, who's running on the other side, be the person on the stage deposing our candidate?' Preibus said." [HuffPost]

PERRY WILL ANNOUNCE WHITE HOUSE PLANS ON JUNE 4 - "His health is much better this time" is about as toxic a phrase electorally as "ethanol blows." Jonathan Topaz and Katie Glueck: "Rick Perry will announce whether or not he is running for president on June 4, according to a spokesman...his team believes he would be far better-prepared this time around. They also note that he’s in much better health than during his last run, when severe back pain interfered with his performance. MITT ROMNEY PREPARES FOR SPORT - On his forthcoming charity boxing match with Evander Holyfield, as told to Mark Leibovich: 'I will get in Evander’s face with compliments and good humor. I want to keep him very happy and very friendly...And between rounds, there will be young women holding up round numbers walking in the ring… We will come in tuxedos. Then I will change. My son has procured a red silk robe complete with hood. And I’ll have red silk shorts...I did not ask Harry [Reid] for advice, but if I’m successful in the bout with Evander, then my next bout is going to be with Harry." [NYT]

HuffPost asked Reid's office if such a showdown could come to pass. "To quote Frozen, let it go," said Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson.

1. SENTENCING
Tsarnaev Gets Death for Marathon Bombing
After 14-and-a-half hours of deliberations, a jury has decided that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was found guilty of all 30 counts related to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, will receive the death penalty. Tsarnaev was convicted on April 8 of plotting and executing the bombings with his brother, Tamerlan. The conviction marks the first time in the post-September 11 era in which a terrorist has been sentenced to death by a federal jury. "Your service in this case has been the very antithesis of mob law," judge George A. O'Toole Jr. told the jurors before letting them go. "On behalf of a community seriously aggrieved, you have demonstrated...men and women...can make careful, rational, and solemn judgments." In this phase of his trial, the jury had to decide whether to award him life in prison or the death penalty on multiple counts. Some family members of the bombing's victims and several of the survivors had advocated for life in prison, because such a verdict would have spared them the lengthy appeals process that comes with a death penalty verdict. A willingness to impose the death penalty if the prosecution met a certain burden of proof was a requirement for jurors, however, and the jury sentenced him to death on six counts.

Cosby Speaks on Rape Allegations
Bill Cosby addressed the multiple sexual-assault allegations against him in an interview on Good Morning America on Friday. "I have been in this business over 52 years and I have never seen anything like this," he said. "Reality is the situation. And I can't speak." Cosby was invited on the show to discuss school funding by the Black Belt Foundation. The comedian has remained silent as more and more women have alleged that he assaulted them, but his legal team has repeatedly denied the allegations.

18,000 Exposed in Penn State Cyberattack
Penn State is under attack. The information of some 18,000 individuals and 500 organizations was potentially exposed in a series of cyberattacks since September 2012, though Provost Nick Jones said the university wasn't aware of the problem until the FBI notified it in November 2014. To keep the hackers at bay, the school has chosen to take its computer system off the Internet. Authorities say they believe the attacks originate in China, but are unsure if it is the Chinese government or individuals within the country.

5. BAD COPS
Racist Cop Emails Jeopardize 500+ Cases
The Miami Beach Police Department is investigating whether its officers unjustly influenced 540 cases after several were caught sending each other racist emails and sexist and pornographic images. Sixteen police officers were involved in the emails, which involved jokes like a "Black Monopoly," in which all squares read "go to jail," and images of abused women with captions reading "Domestic violence. Because sometimes, you have to tell her more than once." Two of the accused were high-ranking: one of them has since retired and the other was fired. "These activities are a breach of trust. They are disgusting," said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. "Our goal is to make sure our office reviews with a fine-toothed comb all of these cases." Investigators will also examine whether emailing an autopsy photo violated state law, and will make sure none of the pornographic images sent included minors.

Mom Went on the Run From Circumcision
A Florida woman has been arrested after spending more than two months in hiding with her 4-year-old son—in an attempt to stop his father from getting the child circumcised. Heather Hironimus says she never married the boy's father, Dennis Nebus, but agreed to the procedure in a parenting agreement filed in court. She later changed her mind, but judges sided with the father, so Hironimus took the law into her own hands. She also filed a federal civil-rights complaint on her son's behalf.

AT&T Spreads Rollover Data Cheer to GoPhone
AT&T Mobility introduced Rollover Data early this year. The offering is
very similar to its successful Rollover Minutes for voice calls, which
