Is Facebook About To Take Over The News?

THE NUTGRAF

Facebook took a step closer today to swallowing the news industry today. Along with nine partners -- including The New York Times, BuzzFeed, The Atlantic and The Guardian, among others -- the social-media giant launched "Instant Articles," which allows publishers to host their content directly on Facebook. The move has set off something of a panic among media players, which already depend on Facebook for a good portion of their traffic. It's a subtle yet significant shift in power: by publishing content directly on Facebook's platform, news organizations are ceding a level of control. You could argue Facebook and its algorithm have been controlling the flow of information -- what users see and don't -- for some time now, but for journalists given to skepticism, it's a whole other matter to hand over your content to a third party. On the flip side, it does help the user experience: "Instant Articles" load 10 times faster than clicking through to the web. What's more, publishers can still embed ads -- or let Facebook ads take over and reap a portion of the profit.

HUFFPOST HILL - Jeb Suffers Premature Declaration; Happens To Lots Of Guys

Posted: 13 May 2015 02:32 PM PDT

HuffPost Hill
The Senate reached a deal on granting the president a fast track for trade authority; Americans should send the State Department their jobs' dimensions so they can be put in an appropriately sized crate, loaded into a giant cargo liner, and sent overseas. “I’ve ridden that train before” is the second-worst form of Amtrak sympathy, right after “Baltimore looks so poor from the Acela.” And Jeb Bush prematurely said "I'm running for president in 2016." Asked if he would have done that differently, he simply replied, "I love my brother." This is HUFFPOST HILL for Wednesday, May 13th, 2015:

SENATE REACHES TPA AGREEMENT - The Senate proves that the Senate works… at making sure the Senate has as little to do with major trade legislation as possible. Mike McAuliff and Jessica Schulberg: "Senate leaders reached a deal Wednesday to push ahead with votes on President Barack Obama's trade deals. The agreement came after Democrats blew up an earlier agreement Tuesday over fears that key measures they have sponsored would fail, or never get votes. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Wednesday afternoon that leaders had found a way around the impasse by agreeing to let Democrats have votes on key trade enforcement measures before holding votes on the fast-track authority that Obama needs to finish new massive trade deals with Pacific Rim countries and Europe…Under the agreement, the Senate will vote Thursday on an African trade deal, and then a customs and enforcement measure that includes many of the trade protections Democrats feared would be lost, including a provision that targets currency manipulation by China and trading partners." [HuffPost]

People have been trying to outsource John Boehner's job from Ohio for years, so he's used to this: "House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he is 'still optimistic' Congress has the votes to give the president authority to fast-track international trade deals. Boehner said that no matter what, the House will figure out how to deal with the trade legislation once it hits the floor... 'It’s a bump in the road. At the end of the day I think there is a majority in the House and Senate for giving the president trade promotion authority,' Boehner told reporters on Wednesday. 'I’m hopeful the Senate will act soon, and when the Senate does, I expect we will act shortly thereafter.'" [HuffPost's Laura Barron-Lopez]

@ReutersZengerle: Before Senate trade deal announced, Sen Hatch said he was "about ready to kill somebody," and that when he kills someone they stay dead.

LIBERALS NOT JUMPING INTO OBAMA-WARREN 'SEXIST' FIGHT - Evan McMorris-Santoro: "The progressives urging Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for president want no part of the claim that President Obama was being sexist when he critiqued Warren in a recent interview. Sen. Sherrod Brown said the president’s use of her first name, Elizabeth, was sexist. The president of the National Organization for Women said his criticism was done 'in a sexist way.'" [BuzzFeed]

BONKERS FOR BOLTON: FORMER UN AMBASSADOR TO MAKE 2016 'ANNOUNCEMENT' TOMORROW - If he chooses not to run, he's going to play kingmaker in deciding whether Peter King or Lindsey Graham finishes 11th in the Iowa Caucus. Ben Schreckinger: "John Bolton, former ambassador to the United Nations, will announce Thursday around noon whether he will run for president. Bolton plans to reveal his intentions in a video to be posted to Facebook and will then hold a conference call with media, according to a spokesman for John Bolton PAC. Bolton has been active on the Republican pre-presidential campaign circuit – speaking at the Iowa Freedom Summit in January, the Conservative Political Action Conference in February, and last month’s First in the Nation Summit in New Hampshire – but has attracted little attention in a crowded primary field." [Politico]

It's not official unless spoken in front of a carefully assembled group of diverse people: "Republican Jeb Bush appears to have unintentionally announced his candidacy for president in 2016 in a conversation with reporters on Wednesday that was caught on video. Speaking in Nevada, the former Florida governor seemed to acknowledge he was a candidate but right afterward indicated he had not made up his mind. 'I'm running for president in 2016, and the focus is going to be about how we, if I run, how do you create high sustained economic growth,' Jeb Bush said in the video posted on the NBC News website." [Reuters]

Jeb can't stop boofing easy questions about Iraq.

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Nathan Strout: "A new study conducted by two Cornell University economists suggests that higher cigarette taxes increase the likelihood that smokers will enroll in SNAP benefits, or food stamps." [TheMaineWire.com]

YOU PEOPLE HAVE SUCH TERRIBLE TASTE WHEN IT COMES TO CORRUPTION - Jeez, if you're going to trade-in your reputation at the pawn shop of souls that is K Street, at least do so with a trip to Paris. Scott Higham, Steven Rich and Alice Crites: "The state-owned oil company of Azerbaijan secretly funded an all-expenses-paid trip to a conference at Baku on the Caspian Sea in 2013 for 10 members of Congress and 32 staff members, according to a confidential ethics report obtained by The Washington Post. Three former top aides to President Obama appeared as speakers at the conference. Lawmakers and their staff members received hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of travel expenses, silk scarves, crystal tea sets and Azerbaijani rugs valued at $2,500 to $10,000, according to the ethics report. Airfare for the lawmakers and some of their spouses cost $112,899, travel invoices show. The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic, known as SOCAR, allegedly funneled $750,000 through nonprofit corporations based in the United States to conceal the source of the funding for the conference in the former Soviet nation, according to the 70-page report by the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent investigative arm of the House." [WaPo]

The New York Times put on its safari hat for another adventure in Washington, D.C.

TRAIN WAS GOING TOO FAST - "An Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia on Tuesday night had been going at least 100 mph before the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board announced on Wednesday -- more than twice the legal speed limit." [HuffPost]

CONGRESS VOTES TO CUT AMTRAK FUNDING, POLITICAL CAPITAL - Mike Simpson's retort should be placed alongside "Kiss my ass. This is a holy site for the Polish people" in the Pantheon of self-serving tut-tutting. Jeremy Diamond and Eric Bradner: "A House panel approved a measure Wednesday that cuts funding for Amtrak, less than a day after a train derailment left at least seven people dead and many more injured. The Republican-led House Appropriations Committee voted 30-21 to reduce grants to Amtrak by $252 million -- a drop of about 15% from last year's level. The cut would apply only to Amtrak's capital spending and wouldn't touch funding levels for safety and operations. The measure still needs to clear the full House and Senate before it would go into effect in October. Democrats on the panel fought unsuccessfully to boost Amtrak funding by $1 billion, to $2.4 billion. But Republicans argued that such a spending increase would need to be offset by cuts elsewhere in the budget, and they admonished Democrats for pointing to the derailment in an effort to increase funding for the passenger rail service. 'Don't use this tragedy in that way. It was beneath you,' Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, said to Democrats." [CNN]

TRAINS ACTUALLY GETTING SAFER - If a tree falls in the forest, and that forest is on the I-95 corridor, will anyone NOT hear it, much less read media criticism about coverage of the tree? Dana Liebelson: "The [Federal Railroad Administration], responsible for administering federal grants to Amtrak, said there were 1,755 train accidents in 2014, 42 percent fewer than the approximately 3,000 in 2006. Derailments plunged to 1,241 from 2,197 during the period. For Amtrak and commuter railroads, derailments dropped to 54 from 76 over that eight-year period. The number of accidents dropped to 130 from 204. Train-related deaths have not followed the overall decline. In 2014, trains killed 813 people, including 226 on Amtrak and commuter railroads. Those numbers include, for example, people who were hit by trains while trespassing and motorists crashing into trains. 'Trespassing and highway-rail grade crossing incidents account for 96 percent of all rail-related fatalities,' the the FRA said last year." [HuffPost]

GATOR BOOTS DON'T PAY FOR THEMSELVES - Such hypocrisy. This is like the time we found out Max Baucus gave to charity. Adam C. Smith: "U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson.. incorporated a couple hedge funds in the Cayman Islands so investors could avoid taxes. Grayson Fund Ltd. and Grayson Master Fund were incorporated in 2011 in the Cayman Islands, a well known tax Haven that Romney used as well, records show.. That was the same year he wrote in the Huffington Post that the IRS should audit every Fortune 500 company because so many appear to be "evading taxes through transfer pricing and offshore tax havens." In a phone interview Wednesday, Grayson said the funds were incorporated in Grand Cayman at the advice of an attorney he declined to name. It was a vehicle for foreign investors to invest in his funds while limiting their tax liabilities, he said, but no money had been invested in them yet." [Tampa Bay Times]

Public service: "Text messages obtained by The Star reveal a sexually charged relationship between House Speaker John Diehl and a college freshman in a Missouri Capitol internship program that shut down abruptly last month. The conversations unveil a flirty rapport and suggest an intimacy between arguably the state’s most influential lawmaker and a young woman taking some pleasure in a secret association." [Kansas City Star's Jason Hancock]

COOLEST JUDGE EVER RULES AGAINST ABSTINENCE-ONLY EDUCATION - Judge also buy America's teens a six-pack if you they don't leave the house. Mollie Reilly: "A judge in Fresno County, California, has ruled against an abstinence-only sex education program, saying a school district violated state law by failing to provide adequate instruction on sexual health and HIV prevention. Fresno County Superior Court Judge Donald Black said a lawsuit against Clovis Unified School District was justified because the district failed to offer 'comprehensive, medically accurate, objective and bias-free' education, in violation of the California Comprehensive Sexual Health & HIV/AIDS Prevention Act, adopted in 2003. The law requires public schools to 'provide a pupil with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect his or her sexual and reproductive health from unintended pregnancy and STDs.'" [HuffPost]

BECAUSE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR - Here's a dog who hates baths.

CONGRESSMAN GRIPS AND GRINS WITH PIG - Amber Ferguson: "Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) went a little hog wild for a selfie with a special congressional guest on Wednesday. Flake crawled on the floor and chased an adorably dressed pig named Faye in an attempt to get a selfie, and it was all caught on video. The congressman, along with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), came together for Citizens Against Government Waste’s annual release of its “Congressional Pig Book.” The report highlights what the group considers to be the year’s most egregious federal expenditures, which this year included $21 million for a National Exercise Program, $1 million for an embryo adoption awareness campaign and $5 million for abstinence education. Flake has yet to share the selfie, blaming the pig." [HuffPost]

1. WHAT WENT WRONG?
Derailed Amtrak Train Was Going 100 MPH
The engineer from the Philadelphia Amtrak train that derailed Tuesday night and left seven dead and more than 140 hospitalized declined to give a statement to authorities, said police commissioner Charles H. Ramsey, adding that he left with an attorney. This revelation comes amidst news that the train may have been speeding at more than 100 mph before the fatal crash at a curve in the tracks. The speed limit around the curve was 50 mph, with 70 mph in the lead-up to it. Information about the train's speed is reportedly coming from black boxes recovered Wednesday morning, which may also contain other information about the moments before the derailment. The train's conductor is reportedly hospitalized with a skull fracture. The conductor and engineer have not been named. At a press conference Wednesday morning, transportation authorities said they were reviewing all possible reasons for the incident, and were looking at the track, signals, the train's mechanical condition, and human performance, among other possibilities. An AP analysis of a surveillance video from just before the crash site seems to show the train traveling at 107 mph, and passing the camera in just over five seconds. The wire service reports that "the surveillance video inexplicably plays back slightly slower than in real time."

Senate Strikes Deal on Trade Bill
The Senate has reached a deal to push through President Obama's fast-track trade initiative, which is a key part of a larger Pacific Rim trade agreement being ironed out by the administration. The agreement gives Democrats the chance to vote on two of their trade priorities as separate bills. The Trade Promotion Authority measure was blocked on Tuesday by Senate Democrats who were concerned over protections for U.S. workers.

Judge: Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Is Illegal
A California judge has ruled that state law prohibits schools from teaching abstinence-only sex education. Fresno County Superior Court Judge Donald Black's ruling applies only to a 40,000-student school district in Clovis, but sets a precedent as the first decision to interpret the state's 11-year-old sex-ed law. The law requires "age-appropriate" sex-education programs that teach abstinence as the only certain way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, he ruled, but also requires students to receive "medically accurate information" on contraceptives as well. "Access to medically and socially appropriate sexual education is an important public right," Black said.

4. WHAT CRASH?
House Cuts Amtrak Funding
A House committee charged with funding Amtrak shot down a Democratic amendment to increase funding for rail transportation Wednesday morning, in the wake of a devastating commuter train crash the night before. The committee instead pledged to readdress the issue once the cause of the crash identified by investigators. The Republican proposal cuts $260 million from last year's level, allocating a total of $1.1 billion for Amtrak.House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Ky., said it would be "a while before we get answers on the why and how this happened" from the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation. Rep. Mario Diaz Balart (R-Fla.) said Congress will consider "what they could do to prevent this from ever happening again" after the NTSB issues a report. The Democratic amendment would have increased the amount to $1.4 billion – the same funding level as they received last year. Democrats on the committee slammed the decision to push forward without taking the crash into account."We know we will wait for the NTSB report, but it's very important, but it's very clear that cutting the funding drastically does not help improve services at Amtrak," Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) added.Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) was not having it and accused Democrats of using the tragedy for political purposes."When you have no idea, no idea what caused this accident," he said. "Don't use this tragedy in that way. It was beneath you."

Vatican Recognizes 'State of Palestine'
The Holy See recognized Palestine as a state in a treaty issued Wednesday, a change from previous diplomatic relations with the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The treaty has yet to be signed, but the move comes just ahead of a visit by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to the Vatican. This isn't the Vatican's first time talking about a Palestinian state: In 2012, it backed a UN General Assembly decision to that effect, and Pope Francis has referred to it as such in public appearances.

Cops Shoot Man Having a Seizure
A 46-year-old man is in a medically induced coma after he was apparently shot by Philadelphia police for driving into them during a seizure episode on Tuesday. Rudolph "Blue" Keitt Jr. was driving with a friend when he had a seizure and crashed his car into a wall. The friend alerted police, who tried to revive him, but Keitt struggled with them after waking up. He then drove off and hit some officers before suffering another little crash, after which he came "barreling" toward the first crash site. Police then shot him in the chest. Witnesses say he drove home and parallel parked before collapsing outside the car. Keitt, a father of eight, had a history of heart problems, and suffered an additional heart attack after surgery. His condition is described as critical, but stable.

Nevada Mayor Investigated for Child Porn
The mayor of North Las Vegas, Nevada, is reportedly under federal investigation for having what officially said is child pornography on his iPad. A recently retired police chief reports Mayor John Lee told him in October that "he had an issue with kiddie porn popping up on his computer." According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a police detective says the mayor told him links to porn appeared on his device and he wanted them gone, and, upon investigating and being unable to verify the ages of people in photos, the detective had it wiped clean. The mayor denies approaching the detective about this issue. A police investigation found insufficient grounds for prosecution, a department spokesman said, but the FBI is reportedly taking over. The FBI did not comment on the case.

10. SHADY?
Azerbaijan Paid for Congressional Trip
Ten members of Congress and 32 staffers visited a conference in Baku on a trip paid for by Azerbaijan's state-owned oil company, according to a confidential ethics report obtained by the Washington Post. The report claims that the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic funnelled $750,000 through U.S.-based non-profits to conceal the source of funding for the conference. SOCAR had previously sought exemptions to sanctions on Iran for a $28 billion natural gas pipeline in the Caspian Sea, on which it was working with the National Iranian Oil Company. (The exemptions were later approved.) According to the report, travel costs for the Democratic and Republican lawmakers and their spouses topped $112,000; they and staffers also recieved expensive gifts from the company. The House Ethics Committee said it doesn't comment on investigative matters, and lawmakers say they were unaware of the funding source. Three former Obama staffers also spoke at the April 2012 conference, called U.S.-Azerbaijan Relations: Vision for Future.

Today's Story Highlights

Lily Camera Gilds the Selfie
Lily is taking the selfie up a notch. The startup on Tuesday began
taking preorders for a drone camera that will shoot video and stills as
it flies above you. While drone cameras have been on the market for some
time, the Lily offering combines the popularity of first-person video
cameras, like the wildly successful GoPro line of products, with the
emerging consumer flying drone market.

Big Data Analytics Fights Insider Threats
Cyberdefenders for years have adopted Fort Apache strategies to protect
their networks. Strong perimeters could prevent attackers from reaching
precious data, they reasoned. As technology marched on, however, the
idea of an impermeable wall became as quaint as the Maginot Line on the
eve of World War II. Firewalls alone no longer were strong enough to
keep data safe.

Bloodstained Makes Its Mark on Kickstarter
Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi's Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
has drawn more than three times its $500,000 base goal in roughly two
days on Kickstarter. While the concept and its art already have
attracted lavish support from fans, there's still a winding road ahead
before the game goes gold. Bloodstained is a 2.5D platformer with RPG
and crafting elements.

This month, The Huffington Post is celebrating our 10-year anniversary. While we are proud of our past and what the HuffPost family has accomplished together, our eyes are fixed on the next 10 years — both for journalism and for our global community of readers.

To that end, we've partnered with CrowdRise to shine a light on 10 causes for which we believe meaningful strides can be made in the 10 years to come including solving the global environment crisis and making pet adoption the new standard and mutts the coolest breed.

Together, HuffPost and Crowdrise reached out to organizations — some prominent groups and some less familiar — that are providing meaningful and innovative solutions:

Conservation International
MWCT
Water For People
The Nature Conservancy
Gulf Restoration Network
charity: water
ASPCA
Rescued Pets Movement
Foundation Against Companion Animal Euthanasia
Best Friends Animal Society
International Animal Rescue
National Mill Dog Rescue
The Pixie Project

Our hope is this will be an opportunity to not only raise money for this important issue - and others, but also to increase awareness about the important work being done on the ground to serve communities that truly need strong advocates.

We hope you'll join us in celebrating our birthday by supporting the causes and organizations that are part of The Next 10 campaign.

Learn more about how we can save the planet and make mutts the coolest breed — and check out all ten of the causes we believe will shape the next decade.

Identity management within an organization is a very important component of intrusion protection. "Outsiders that want to hack into organizations are becoming smarter," said Gurucul CEO Saryu Nayyar, "so we're seeing a pretty steep rise in compromised accounts." Gurucul uses big data analytics to create a context around everything connected to the network -- users, accounts and devices. [More...]

"SwiftKey, for a long time, has had context awareness, but it's applied it looking forward," explained SwitfKey's Chief Marketing Officer Joe Braidwood. [More...]

Verizon Pursues OTT Dream With $4.4B AOL Buy
Verizon will make a tender offer of $4.4 billion for AOL, the companies
announced Tuesday. AOL will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Verizon
upon completion of the merger agreement this summer. The deal drives
Verizon's LTE wireless video and over-the-top video strategies, and
provides support and connectivity for the company's Internet of Things
platforms.

Google Makes It Easier for Online Hunters to Gather Food
Google last week added an option that lets users place a food order
directly from search results. Six providers are participating in the
service: Seamless, Grubhub, Eat24, Delivery.com, BeyondMenu and
MyPizza.com. More are expected to join later this year. This could
provide Google with an entry into the growing food-delivery market.
Consumers increasingly are searching online for food options.
