We all need help maintaining our personal spiritual practice. We hope that these Midday Meditations, prayers and mindful awareness exercises can be part of bringing spirituality alive in your life.

Today's meditation features an iconic song by reggae group Bob Marley & The Wailers. "Exodus" asks the question: "Are you satisfied with the life you're living?" The answer might encourage us to take action and get moving toward some transformation.

Men and people will fight ya down (Tell me why?)

Today's Story Highlights

Shiny Apple Has a Few Soft Spots
Apple on Monday reported another quarter of stellar earnings, detailing
its drive to 27 percent revenue growth on the backs of its iPhone, Mac
and App Store sales. The company generated $58 billion in revenue in the
second quarter -- about a $12 billion increase year over year -- and
posted a net profit of $13.6 billion, roughly $3 billion more than the
year-ago quarter.

Amazon Goes Full Bore for B2B Commerce
Amazon on Tuesday announced Amazon Business, transforming its 3-year-old
Amazon Supply B2B marketplace with new features and benefits, and a
massively increased product selection. Amazon Business offers customers
everything from IT and lab equipment to traffic signs, industrial deep
fryers and 55-gallon steel drums. Customers will need a business license
to register.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/81989.html

When Elon Met Larry
Tesla Motors founder and CEO Elon Musk reportedly almost sold his
electric car company to Google. Tesla was on the verge of bankruptcy,
and Musk had all but signed the documents that would have handed over
the company, according to an excerpt from the upcoming Elon Musk: Tesla,
SpaceX, and the Quest for the Fantastic Future . The book will be
available May 19.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/81986.html

Patent Holders: Google Wants Your IP!
Google on Monday announced it will open an experimental portal to
purchase patents from their holders between May 8 and May 22. The move
is widely seen as an attempt to shut off patent trolls. Patent holders
have to set the price at which they're willing to sell their IP, and
they will be told by June 26 whether Google wants to buy. Payments will
be made through ACH by late August.

VMware Draws on Open Source to Manage Cloud Micro Services
VMware last week released details about two new open source projects --
Project Lightwave and Project Photon -- that aim to bridge the divide
between the company's virtualization software and other vendors'
containers. Both projects integrate into VMware's unified platform for
the hybrid cloud, allowing the company to create a consistent
environment for cloud-native and traditional applications.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/81983.html

Marketing's Next Act
Marketing continues to heat up as the next big thing in CRM. It's so big
that I can see it splintering in multiple ways to accommodate all the
permutations that are suddenly possible, thanks to big data, analytics,
and a determination to get beyond using marketing technology as a
glorified accounting system designed to limit "losses" due to marketing.
You can't win by limiting your losses.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/81984.html

No More Smartphones, Nokia Vows
Nokia has kinda, sorta asserted that it's not returning to the
smartphone business, in the wake of persistent reports that it's been
eyeing a comeback. Nokia "currently has no plans to manufacture or sell
consumer handsets," reads a company statement. "The reports are false,
and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks
executive."
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/81980.html

Modders Steamed over Valve's Revenue-Sharing Plans
Valve last week announced that it was allowing players to sell video
game mods on its digital distribution platform, Steam, starting with
mods of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , but its plans for policing the
marketplace and sharing revenue with creators have become points of
contention. Skyrim developer Bethesda Softworks is the only company
participating in the initiative so far.

The Great Apple Watch Marketing Mystery
The day Apple initially picked to launch the Apple Watch was in some
respects a dud. The device was not available for sale in Apple Stores on
Friday as previously scheduled, although it was available at some high-
end fashion boutiques. Confusion reigned over shipments, with Apple
earlier having said deliveries would be pushed back to June, but later
saying some preorders would be shipped early.

Today's Story Highlights

IoT: Why Security Pros Need to Prepare Now
Have you ever heard of the Cullinan diamond? If you haven't, it was the
largest diamond ever discovered: a 3106 carat diamond found in 1905 in
South Africa. What's interesting about the Cullinan diamond isn't so
much the discovery of the stone itself but what happened afterward:
specifically, the cutting of the diamond. The Cullinan diamond was split
into a number of smaller pieces.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81990.html

Other Shoe Drops in White House Security Breach
Last year's breach of unclassified White House computer systems
reportedly was far more intrusive than initially thought and included
the theft of some presidential correspondence. No classified systems
were compromised, including the servers that control message traffic
from the president's BlackBerry. However, much of the information the
unclassified servers handle is considered sensitive.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81988.html

Pretty 3D Printing, Eye-Catching Engagement Ring Box, Sturdy Smartphone
3D printing is fascinating. It still seems wild to me that you can
download schematics for anything and have a plastic version of a
physical object in your home a short while later. However, not many
printers can switch up the color or the types of filaments you use in
your creation. The Pallette could change that, with a peripheral to
brighten up that mono-colored trinket you're ready to print.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81981.html

Treyarch: Black Ops III More Ambitious Than World at War
Activision on Monday announced the launch date for Call of Duty: Black
Ops III -- Friday, Nov. 6. The company is departing from its tradition
of Tuesday releases. Instead of conflicting with school and work
schedules, the Friday release will give players the weekend to dive into
the sci-fi shooter and get a feel for the new gameplay mechanics.

Can Microsoft Take Back Momentum From Google and Apple?
Microsoft is holding its Build event this week, marking the beginning of
its major push to launch Windows 10. Build is in San Francisco this
year, which effectively puts it right in the back yard of both Apple and
Google -- a nice "in your face" move. I was the featured launch analyst
for Windows 95 two decades ago and there, Microsoft ripped Apple a new
rear orifice.

The Latest Opinions From Bloomberg View

Apr 29, 2015 bloombergview.com

Cities

Leonid Bershidsky: "Inevitably, after the Baltimore riots, there will be talk of fixing Sandtown-Winchester. ... The government could start by training cops not to automatically treat people in such predominantly black neighborhoods as criminals." Read more...

Ramesh Ponnuru: "President Barack Obama's remarks on the riots in Baltimore started off well and then went swiftly downhill." Read more...

Investing

Barry Ritholtz: "Every now and again, a way of looking at markets suddenly gains traction. Data gets assembled, analyzed, reviewed. Eventually, it becomes the basis of traders' decision-making process. ... The problem that arises all too often is that this approach is statistically bogus." Read more...

Ukraine Crisis

Bershidsky: "Russia's toxicity for investors is suddenly so 2014. Western money is returning to Moscow's equity and bond markets, and private Russian companies are again able to borrow, albeit at a premium to Western peers. The main cause for this reversal of fortunes is the cease-fire in Ukraine." Read more...

Immigration

Noah Smith: "Many people who take a hard line on immigration will be quick to tell you that it's only illegal immigration they oppose. ... Immigration boosters, including me, have always suspected that this professed concern for the law masks a deeper opposition to all immigration. Now Wisconsin governor and potential presidential candidate Scott Walker has given ammo to the skeptics." Read more...

2016 Elections

Jonathan Bernstein: "If you think democracy is something America needs only occasionally, you can complain about the endless presidential election. But if you want a strong democracy, then frequent and continuing U.S. campaigns are an excellent innovation." Read more...

Environment

Carl Pope: "In California and around the world, water supply and carbon-based energy production are locked in a destructive feedback cycle. Fossil fuel extraction and combustion consume water -- lots of it. Obtaining and delivering water, in turn, requires energy -- lots of it. Too little of one yields shortages of the other." Read more...

Climate Change

Christopher Flavelle: "Last week's announcement that Canada won't match U.S. emission-reduction targets offers a fresh look at Canadians' enduring bipolarity on climate change: They're far more likely than Americans to say the problem is real, yet keep voting for a government that does nothing about it. Therein lies a cautionary tale for the rest of the world." Read more...

Asia

James Gibney: "Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's hawkish policies, historical revisionism, and heavy-handed efforts to manipulate domestic and foreign media have infuriated critics in Japan and its neighborhood. They might want to reserve some of that anger for U.S. super-diplomat George F. Kennan." Read more...

Tech

Katie Benner: "Apple may never endure a crisis of Goldman-like proportions, one in which a global financial calamity threatens to decimate the company's business lines. Yet Apple is also clearly, admirably and perilously occupying a summit with which Goldman is familiar. And it's not easy to stay on top." Read more...
