Here’s a song for your Saturday: Junior Boys’ “Sneak A Picture”
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“In the coming year, I hope that all people in Hong Kong will take inspiration from the sheep’s character and pull together in an accommodating manner to work for Hong Kong’s future.” -- Hong Kong chief executive C.Y. Leung on the Chinese New Year, in what seemed like an apparent jab at the Umbrella Revolution protesters who shut down the city earlier this year.

Elon Musk thinks he’s Daddy Warbucks. Last week, the Tesla CEO announced the electric carmaker planned to “spend staggering amounts of money” as it builds out its line of vehicles and a huge factory for producing the lithium-ion batteries that power them. Musk, a billionaire himself, is known for his grand ambition, but some investors are worried. The company’s stock price has been falling, especially after it bungled its aggressive entry into China.
Move over, Snapchat. The New York Times, a newspaper that has been bleeding money and laying off top-tier journalists for years, may be worth $19 billion, by one analyst’s estimate. That’d be huge, considering the company is now valued at about $2 billion in the stock market. Wall Street thinks more highly of tech startups than newspapers right now. Earlier this week, a story broke that Snapchat, the ephemeral photo-messaging app, was eying a $19 billion valuation with a new round of funding.
Viva la France? Vivre en France. Despite its recent economic turmoil, the country does a much better job of supporting families and women who want to have children and remain in the workforce. That’s more than we could say of the United States, where the workforce share of employed women aged 25-54 has fallen in recent years.
This is truly horrifying. National Mentor Holdings, the country’s biggest for-profit foster-care company, has failed to protect the children it has placed in many homes from death, sexual abuse and other mistreatment, according to a bombshell investigation by BuzzFeed. The company’s screening and training processes are hurting, even killing, the children who are most in need.
Vegans can eat ramen, too. The Japanese noodle soup, beloved for its adaptability and variation by region and country, is traditionally made with pork or chicken broth, and often contains a hearty helping of pork belly. But it doesn’t have to. A new recipe published by Serious Eats calls for vegan udon broth and a nice array of vegetables.
Some art can be addictive. But this Dutch artist takes it to another level. Motherboard interviewed “Erick,” an artist-cum-coke-enthusiast, who makes designs with huge helpings of the powdery, illicit drug. He even designed the Vice publication’s logo out of pure, neatly cut coke. A lot of it. “It’s 25-30 grams,” he said. “I know it’s a lot, but the logo is really big.”
It’s God’s fault! A new study found that some people who believe they were born with feelings of anger, disappointment or mistrust, causing them to hurt others or themselves or otherwise behave badly, blame a divine deity for their rough lot in life. This belief that a god has done them wrong can take a toll on physical health, often leading to depression and poor recovery from illness.
Is there a therapist in the HR department? A new study found that people with even moderate anxiety are more likely to feel bullied in the workplace. It’s a vicious cycle. Such anxiety may leave workers more susceptible to workplace bullying, which in turn breeds more anxiety.
Joe Biden is a little too handsy. The vice president, often satirized as a sort-of ladies man, appears to have a history of getting close -- perhaps uncomfortably close -- to women. After a photo of Biden with his hands on Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter’s wife went viral, Gawker’s Sam Biddle rounded up a series of pictures of what he dubbed Groping Joe.

The blankets cover his body and the IV bag hangs behind him. He is about to be wheeled into surgery -- a minor foot surgery to remove a broken sesamoid bone which has caused pain for nearly two years. I hold my breath as I exit the pre-op area even though I know he'll be fine. He will be home in a few hours complaining about his new crutches and forced bed rest. I will spend the next few weeks caring for and loving him while occasionally rolling my eyes at his requests for extra blankets and back scratches. I will feel frustrated at his stubborn insistence to push himself. He will feel vulnerable and irritated by his temporary limitations. We will laugh at the absurdity of the situation one second and argue for no reason the next. We will both wish for time to pass quickly. Yet, I wouldn't trade one minute. I wouldn't want anyone else caring for him.
What does it really means to form a partnership and marriage with someone? To meet someone and eventually make the decision to share a life together. To be brave enough to embark on a journey that is ridiculously fraught with imperfections. To give over a piece of your heart and in turn accept another person's heart -- by choice.
Marriage IS NOT a fairy tale. Marriage IS NOT always simple. Marriage IS NOT about perfection. Marriage IS NOT just about love -- although most marriages test, push, and teach about the true meaning of love.
Here is what marriage is actually about.
Marriage is acceptance.
Marriage is vulnerability.
Marriage is forgiveness.
Marriage is truth.
Marriage is partnership.
Marriage is choice and commitment.
Marriage is laughter.
Marriage is sharing dreams and experiences.
Marriage is frustration and sometimes anger.
Marriage is love and joy.
Marriage is disappointment and sometimes tears.
Marriage is work.
Marriage is family.
Marriage is a journey.
My husband and I have been on this journey for nearly 10 years. Some days, I shake my head and wonder how and why it all started. I wonder if I'm the only one driven partly mad by the experience. Then I remember. I look into his eyes and I know. This IS marriage. A real marriage. Our marriage.
In sickness and in health, broken foot and all. We belong to each other.
