Lady Gaga was our biggest pop star. What happened?

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST

Middlebrow
By Lauren Duca
Middlebrow is a recap of the week in entertainment, celebrity and television news that provides a comprehensive look at the state of pop culture. From the rock bottom to highfalutin, Middlebrow is your accessible guidebook to the world of entertainment. Sign up to receive it in your inbox here.

Lady Gaga was the biggest pop star in the world. And not just circa 2010. In the post-tabloid, instant-access landscape of the manufactured celebrity figure, there has never been a more rapid rocketing to mega fame than Gaga’s rise about five years ago. She had six No. 1 hits over the course of a single year. She sold 1.1 million copies of “Born This Way” in its first week alone. Beyonce played her backup on “Telephone.” Now, her off-brand engagement to Taylor Kinney (he proposed with a heart-shaped ring on Valentine's day!) is barely news. She’s duetting with Tony Bennett and it’s unclear who is benefitting more from the collaboration. What happened?

0218gaga2

“Is it because she’s not good anymore?” HuffPost Entertainment managing editor Christopher Rosen asked in an email. If we’re talking about “good” meaning “fun to dance to while drinking flavored vodka,” then, no, she's not. “Artpop” and that “Cheek To Cheek” cover are not as “good” as her past stuff. Although, really that distinction has always been more about Gaga's persona than her hit singles. She reached a new level of complexity with “Bad Romance” and “The Fame Monster,” but her music was mostly fluff sprinkled with hooks. At its core, her discography has been catchy pop that didn’t even attempt to match the level of complexity purported by her sartorial choices, post-modern approach to the music video and aggressive name dropping of Andy Warhol. Gaga’s appeal was always in the packaging. She emerged as a true performer equipped with her own mythology and symbolism -- the sort of figure that we hadn’t seen since Madonna. That's where the fascination began, and also where it ended.

“Gaga’s presence introduces the formerly unthinkable idea that Madonna, another voracious Italian girl, may really, truly, finally be on her way out,” Vanessa Grigoriadis wrote for New York magazine in 2010. At the time, that made sense. The similarities were clear -- both had the dark penciled brows, platinum hair and an uncanny ability to dance the fine line between art and consumerism. The creatively controversial stylings of both found a careful balance of capitalism and subversion by sheer virtue of being churned out in the form of radio hits. Madonna has stayed relevant by navigating the tenuous space between the two realms, while Gaga quickly pushed herself over the edge by force-feeding us her artistry in light of her pop stardom. And that's why she's already on her way out, while Madonna is still providing "controversy" to the masses.

332kanye2

Look at "Artpop." The message of the album is the idea of Gaga as art. (Like, very literally: “Pop culture was in art, now art's in pop culture in me.”) With "Applause," Gaga's avant gardism has become as hollow as one of Jeff Koons’ balloon animal sculptures. Being avant-garde, truly experimenting in any medium, has always been about breaking from the accepted milieu and refusing to compete. Yet, Gaga purported the avant-garde, while her purest motivation was competition for fame.

For a more recent comparison, we can look to Katy Perry. Back in 2010, that same Grigordias New York magazine piece likened Perry to one of the "rising talents unable to push through to superstardom." In 2014, "Roar" beat out "Applause" as part of Perry's ever-swelling collection of hits. Perry's timeline and approach to stardom make her the ultimate foil for Gaga. Where Gaga steeped herself in meaning and pretension, Perry stands for nothing. Her songs are not anymore about her than they are about the 13-year-old girl in Tulsa who really does feel like a plastic bag. As Rich Juzwiak wrote after her Super Bowl performance, "[It's unclear] Katy Perry has anything to say, any unique perspective, any capacity to challenge or surprise, any persona beyond vaguely goofy and occasionally sentimental."

It’s in the comparison of all three that we see where Madonna and Perry have maintained their fame while Gaga has waned. Perry is a sort of a vessel for the pop-culture machine, where Madonna imbues artistry into the artifice of her persona, but both embrace the manufactured nature of their stardom. We know that these figures are created for us, almost as if in a "Josie And The Pussycats" lab. Gaga didn't fail because she is inauthentic -- all pop stars are -- but because she refused to embrace the reality of her act. As an icon of the millennial pop, Gaga may never truly be "over," but until she can channel the authentic inauthenticity we see in Perry and Madonna, let's hope she has enough room for that meat dress in her freezer.

HUFFPOST HILL - More Like RUDE Giuliani

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 02:55 PM PST

HuffPost Hill
Like the communist that he is, President Obama appropriated some land for the state, designating three new national monuments. Democrats have started a 2020 redistricting super PAC called "Advantage 2020," while the GOP is readying its counterpart, "John Boehner, The 91-Year-Old Speaker." And Rudy Giuliani thinks Obama doesn’t love America like he does, though he might just be jealous of the time he went to America’s apartment and, standing on the sidewalk drenched in rain, saw the president through the window. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, February 19th, 2015:

RUDY GIULIANI NOUN/VERB/OBAMA'D SO HARD - You mean to tell us that Rudy GIuliani still isn't embracing his fate and appearing in home security system commercials? ("I'm former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, if ISIS knows one thing, it's that it hates America. If it knows another thing, it's that it never messes with the Slomin Shield.") Igor Bobic: "Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) sparked a firestorm on Wednesday, when he proclaimed that President Barack Obama 'doesn't love' America. The backlash keeps rolling in. 'I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America,' Giuliani reportedly said at a private New York fundraiser for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. 'He doesn't love you. And he doesn't love me. He wasn't brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country.' Asked about the matter during a flight aboard Air Force One to Chicago, a White House...'It was a horrible thing to say,' deputy press secretary Eric Schultz said, according to a pool report. Schultz further jabbed at the onetime presidential hopeful by noting that Giuliani had tested the line during his 'fleeting 2007 run for the presidency.' Democrats have also denounced Giuliani's comments as offensive and called on Walker and the rest of the potential 2016 GOP presidential field to do the same… Walker, who was in the room while Giuliani was speaking, responded Thursday morning. "The mayor can speak for himself. I'm not going to comment on what the president thinks or not," Walker said. "I'm in New York. I'm used to people saying things that are aggressive." [HuffPost]

Not that anyone asked, but Bobby Jindal released a statement refusing to condemn Giuliani's remarks. Thanks, Bobby!

GROUNDHOG SEES SHADOW - Every year we do this story. It's a tradition. Sam Stein: "The wave of progress on LGBT rights has yet to reach the halls of the unsuitably named Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. For yet another year, the Conservative Political Action Conference will exclude from its list of sponsors the Log Cabin Republicans, a conservative group that advocates for gay rights." [HuffPost]

HuffPost Hill XTRA: The American Conservative Union claimed to Sam that the Log Cabin Republicans hadn't actually asked to sponsor CPAC. The Log Cabin Republicans then forwarded a December email saying they'd be "honored" to sponsor the event. Oopsie.

HuffPost Haircuts: Kate Sheppard.

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Woop woop, da sound of da food police. Oregon state senator Chris Edwards (D-Eugene) wants to stop people from buying "junk food" with food stamps. "Edwards says he personally doesn’t think it’s good policy to let people use SNAP to buy things like Cheetos. He says since many people on the program are also enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan, it would be beneficial to direct consumers towards whole foods with higher nutritional content. 'EugeneWeekly.com]

DOUBLE DOWNER - Why do people always want to control other people's food stamp purchases? Bryce Covert has the answer.

BUSINESSMAN IS SHREWD - We're pretty sure "Ocean's 13" was the last time we watched this many famous men vie for the affection of an old Jewish dude in Las Vegas (Elliott Gould is a national treasure, BTW). Bloomberg: "Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson won't get involved in the presidential primary contest until 'well into 2016,' his top political adviser said in an interview Thursday. 'Any support of a presidential candidate is at least a year away,' the adviser, Andy Abboud, said. What Adelson does matters. The 81-year-old billionaire casino owner spent more money on the 2012 presidential race than anyone else in the country, and his every move is being closely watched for signs that he has a favorite this time around. In 2012, Adelson and his family invested more than $15 million in former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's presidential aspirations through a super-PAC, keeping him competitive far longer than he would have been otherwise. The Adelsons backed Mitt Romney after he won the nominating contest. All told, the family put about $93 million into super-PACs and campaigns during the cycle. Abboud's remarks came in response to questions about Sheldon and his wife Miriam Adelson's participation in a March 3 fundraiser in Washington for South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham's presidential exploratory group, Security Through Strength." [Bloomberg]

DEMOCRATS WOULD LIKE TO CONTROL THE HOUSE BEFORE 2030 - Is it just us or does "Advantage 2020" sound less like a super PAC and more like a vision supplemental program for your health insurance? Samantha Lachman: "Democrats launched a super PAC Thursday with the purpose of flipping state legislatures before the next round of redistricting, which will follow the 2020 elections. The PAC, called Advantage 2020, will be led by Mark Schauer, a former Democratic congressman and Michigan state Senate leader who lost the state's gubernatorial race to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder last year. Advantage 2020 plans to spend about $70 million over the next three elections in an attempt to chip away at GOP majorities in key battleground states where Republicans established legislative districts after the 2010 elections. 'The coming round of congressional redistricting will shape the political landscape for the next decade, and Mark’s leadership of Advantage 2020 is crucial to empowering us to win the state legislative seats critical to that process,' said Michael Sargeant, the executive director of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which is funding the PAC, in a statement." [HuffPost]

Here is an incredibly uncomfortable video of Joe Biden touching women.

Our proposal -- "spot where balloon boy landed" -- remains unconsecrated: "President Barack Obama will designate three new national monuments on Thursday and announce a new initiative to increase the number of children who visit national parks. Obama will formally name the three monuments this afternoon in remarks near Chicago's Pullman neighborhood, an industrial community known for its historic role in labor and civil rights organizing. The Pullman neighborhood will be the first National Park Service-protected area in Chicago. Obama is also designating Honouliuli National Monument in Hawaii, which was the site of a Japanese internment camp during World War II, and Browns Canyon in Colorado. Under the Antiquities Act of 1906, presidents have the power to grant federal protection to certain areas due to their historic or natural significance. National monuments can be managed by several agencies, including the National Park Service." [HuffPost's Kate Sheppard]

BECAUSE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR - Here's a cat who isn't intimidated by snow.

REALLY INTENSE CONGRESSMAN DIES - If ever there were a Tom Wolfe character roaming the halls of Congress, it was Cass Ballenger. Roll Call: "Ballenger [R-NC] announced his retirement from Congress in 2004, facing a defamation lawsuit from the nation’s largest Islamic civil liberties group. He was quoted calling the Council on American-Islamic Relations 'the fundraising arm for Hezbollah' and saying living near its Washington headquarters had contributed to the breakup of his marriage. The lawsuit was thrown out by a federal appeals court in 2006... [Ballenger and his wife, Donna] went on missions to Central and South America. After hitting it off with Chavez on a trip to Venezuela, Ballenger invited the leftist president to visit his home in Hickory, N.C., as an effort to press him closer to the political center. Ballenger liked to tell a story that Chavez, who spoke little English, once walked up to Donna Ballenger and said, 'I love you very much.' ... Ballenger’s tongue got him into trouble in 2002...Ballenger told a local paper he had 'segregationist feelings' himself after run-ins with black Georgia Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney. He quickly apologized and rescinded the comments, but some groups called for him to resign. Back home, Ballenger tried to counter further fallout by having his yard’s 3 1/2-foot tall black lawn jockey statue painted white. The cast iron statue had been a thorn in Ballenger’s side during re-election campaigns." [Roll Call]

#TBT: Dear Less-Than-Perfect Mom

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 02:24 PM PST

This week's throwback post is a reassuring letter by Becoming Supermommy's Lea Grover.

Dear Less-Than-Perfect Mom

lea grover not for reuse

Dear Mom,

I've seen you around. I've seen you screaming at your kids in public, I've seen you ignoring them at the playground, I've seen you unshowered and wearing last night's pajama pants at preschool drop-off. I've seen you begging your children, bribing them, threatening them. I've seen you shouting back and forth with your husband, with your mom, with the police officer at the crosswalk.

I've seen you running around with your kids, getting dirty and occasionally swearing audibly when you bang a knee. I've seen you sharing a milkshake with a manic 4-year-old. I've seen you wiping your kids' boogers with your bare palm, and then smearing them on the back of your jeans. I've seen you carry your toddler flopped over the crook of your arm while chasing a runaway ball.

I've also seen you gritting your teeth while your kid screamed at you for making him practice piano, or soccer, or basket weaving or whatever it was. I've seen you close your eyes and breathe slowly after finding a gallon of milk dumped into your trunk. I've seen you crying into the sink while you desperately scrub crayon off your best designer purse. I've seen you pacing in front of the house.

I've seen you at the hospital waiting room. I've seen you at the pharmacy counter. I've seen you looking tired and frightened.

I've seen a lot of you, actually.

I see you every single day.

I don't know if you planned to be a parent or not. If you always knew from your earliest years that you wanted to bring children into the world, to tend to them, or if motherhood was thrust upon you unexpectedly. I don't know if it meets your expectations, or if you spent your first days as a mom terrified that you would never feel what you imagined "motherly love" would feel like for your child. I don't know if you struggled with infertility, or with pregnancy loss, or with a traumatic birth. I don't know if you created your child with your body, or created your family by welcoming your child into it.

But I know a lot about you.

I know that you didn't get everything that you wanted. I know that you got a wealth of things you never knew you wanted until they were there in front of you. I know that you don't believe that you're doing your best, that you think you can do better. I know you are doing better than you think.

I know that when you look at your child, your children, you see yourself. And I know that you don't, that you see a stranger who can't understand why the small details of childhood that were so important to you are a bother to this small person who resembles you.

I know that you want to throw a lamp at your teenager's head sometimes. I know you want to toss your 3-year-old out the window once in a while.

I know that some nights, once it's finally quiet, you curl up in bed and cry. I know that sometimes, you don't, even though you wanted to.

I know that some days are so hard that all you want is for them to end, and then at bedtime your children hug you and kiss you and tell you how much they love you and want to be like you, and you wish the day could last forever.

But it never does. The day always ends, and the next day brings new challenges. Fevers, heartbreak, art projects, new friends, new pets, new fights. And every day you do what you need to do.

You take care of things, because that's your job. You go to work, or you fill up the crock pot, or you climb into the garden, or strap the baby to your back and pull out the vacuum cleaner.

You drop everything you're doing to moderate an argument over whose turn it is to use a specifically colored marker, or to kiss a boo-boo, or to have a conversation about what kind of lipstick Pinocchio's Mommy wears.

I know that you have tickle fights in blanket forts, and that you have the words to at least eight different picture books memorized. I've heard that you dance like a wild woman when it's just you and them. That you have no shame about farting or belching in their presence, that you make up goofy songs about peas and potatoes and cheese.

I know that an hour past bedtime, you drop what you're doing and trim the fingernail that your 3-year-old insists is keeping her up. I know that you stop cleaning dishes because your kids insist you need to join their tea party. I know you fed your kids PB&J for four days straight when you had the flu. I know that you eat leftover crusts over the sink while your kids watch "Super Why."

I know you didn't expect most of this. I know you didn't anticipate loving somebody so intensely, or loathing your post-baby body so much, or being so tired or being the mom you've turned out to be.

You thought you had it figured out. Or you were blind and terrified. You hired the perfect nanny. Or you quit your job and learned to assemble flat-packed baby furniture. You get confused by the conflict of feeling like nothing has changed since you were free and unfettered by children, and looking back on the choices you made as though an impostor was wearing your skin.

You're not a perfect mom. No matter how you try, no matter what you do. You will never be a perfect mom.

And maybe that haunts you. Or maybe you've made peace with it. Or maybe it was never a problem to begin with.

No matter how much you do, there is always more. No matter how little you do, when the day is over, your children are still loved. They still smile at you, believing you have magical powers to fix almost anything. No matter what happened at work, or at school, or in playgroup, you have still done everything in your power to ensure that the next morning will dawn and your children will be as happy, healthy, and wise as could possibly be hoped.

There's an old Yiddish saying: "There is one perfect child in the world, and every mother has it."

Unfortunately, there are no perfect parents. Your kids will grow up determined to be different than you. They will grow up certain that they won't make their kids take piano lessons, or they'll be more lenient, or more strict, or have more kids, or have fewer, or have none at all.

No matter how far from perfect you are, you are better than you think.

Someday your kids will be running around like crazy people at synagogue and concuss themselves on a hand rail, and somebody will still walk up to you and tell you what a beautiful family you have. You'll be at the park and your kids will be covered in mud and jam up to the elbows, smearing your car with sugary cement, and a pregnant lady will stop and smile at you wistfully.

No matter how many doubts you might have, you never need doubt this one thing: You are not perfect.

And that's good. Because really, neither is your child. And that means nobody can care for them the way you can, with the wealth of your understanding and your experience. Nobody knows what your child's squall means, or what their jokes mean, or why they are crying better than you do.

And since no mother is perfect, chances are you are caught in a two billion way tie for Best Mom in the World.

Congratulations, Best Mom in the World. You're not perfect.

You are as good as anybody can get.

With love,

Lea

Spies Hacked Virtually Every Cell Phone
With the help of the NSA, British intelligence broke into the world's leading manufacturer of SIM cards and stole millions of keys that encrypt cell phone communications, including what you say. The Intercept dropped this bombshell on Thursday using files from Edward Snowden. U.S. and British spies hacked into Gemalto, which makes SIM cards for AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, and hundreds of other wireless networks. With Gemalto's encryption keys in hand, the intelligence agencies gained "the potential to secretly monitor a large portion of the world's cellular communications, including both voice and data" without having to get a single warrant or tell a telephone company.

10% of NBA Traded in One Day
At least 36 NBA players have been traded on the league's annual trade deadline day. Kevin Garnett will be heading back to the Minnesota Timberwolves after the Brooklyn Nets traded him for Thaddeus Young. The future Hall of Famer led the Timberwolves to the finals during the 2003-2004 season, winning MVP. Before the Nets, Garnett won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics. The trade deadline sent dozens of players rocketing around the NBA. Steve Novak will reportedly be traded to the Detroit Pistons. The Phoenix Suns are set to trade Goran Dragic to the Miami Heat, according to ESPN. The final tally is still yet to be announced.

Gay Couple Defies Texas, Gets Married
Two women who've been together for 31 years were finally married Thursday morning in Texas after a judge ordered the Travis County clerk to issue a marriage license. Sarah Goodfriend and Suzanne Bryant were denied the chance to legally marry eight years ago, but a lawyer petitioned on their behalf and District Judge David Wahlberg ordered the county clerk to grant the women the license. In the petition, the women claimed that not obtaining a license was causing them irreparable harm, because Goodfriend has ovarian cancer. Gay marriage has been illegal in Texas since 1997, but two rulings that found the ban unconstitutional are being appealed.

Garner's Family Gets $0 From Do-Gooders
Online crowdfunding projects have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the family of NYPD chokehold victim Eric Garner, but the slain man's family says they have not received any of it. Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, and his daughter Erica Garner say that only a few online fundraisers have actually handed over any money, though there are at least 19 collecting in Garner's name. "I feel like people are trying to use my father's name for their own gain," Erica Garner told DNAinfo. "It's unfortunately a sad situation." The family is reportedly looking into legal action against the unaffiliated campaigns.

Turkey, U.S. to Train Syrians vs. ISIS
Turkey and the U.S. have signed a deal to work together to train and equip moderate Syrian opposition troops to fight ISIS, according to a Turkish foreign ministry official. "The agreement was signed by the foreign ministry undersecretary and the U.S. ambassador," the official told Reuters. More than 400 U.S. troops, including special-operations units, will be deployed to train Syrian moderates. Previously, U.S. officials said they planned to train around 5,000 Syrian fighters as part of a three-year plan to combat ISIS. The agreement will likely add further tensions to America's strained relationship with Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Boston Snow Starts Parking Turf War
Boston's neverending winter has brought out the worst of its residents. The city has already been hit with a record amount of snow and more is expected to come next week, which has left Bostonians rushing to save parking spots with lobster traps, stuffed bears, and anything else not bolted down. In turn, fellow residents have been "stealing" each other's parking spots, which has led to violent retaliation, including slashing each other's tires. "This is a criminal act of vandalism. This is not a quaint Boston custom gone awry," Stephen Fox, the co-chairman of Boston's the South End Forum, told The Boston Globe.

Oliver Sacks Has Terminal Cancer
Best-selling author and neurologist Oliver Sacks has been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Sacks, 81, penned an eloquent op-ed in The New York Times on Thursday, expressing how he plans to spend the last months of his life: deepening friendships, saying goodbye, writing, and traveling. "I cannot pretend I am without fear. But my predominant feeling is one of gratitude," he wrote. "I have loved and been loved; I have been given much and I have given something in return; I have read and traveled and thought and written. I have had an intercourse with the world, the special intercourse of writers and readers." He concluded: "Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure."

SR 99 Tunnel Project update: Bertha reaches daylight

Late Tuesday night, Seattle Tunnel Partners began mining into the southern wall of the SR 99 tunnel access pit. At midday today, the top portion of the SR 99 tunneling machine’s cutterhead broke through the access pit wall. Crews will stop mining soon to build another concrete tunnel ring.

This is just the beginning of the repair effort being led by Seattle Tunnel Partners and manufacturer Hitachi Zosen. The machine will continue to move forward in 6 ½ foot increments, stopping to build rings on its way into the pit. When the front end of the machine is fully exposed, crews will begin the disassembly process. STP has said taking the machine apart and lifting it to the surface will take significant time and effort.

We recognize that the public has great interest in STP’s repair effort. We will continue to provide photos, video and regular updates about their progress as they work to resume tunneling.

Today's Story Highlights

Retail Shoppers Get More Satisfaction Online
Customer satisfaction with retail has dropped for the first time in four
years, according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index -- except
in the subcategory of e-commerce. All of the brick-and-mortar retail
categories registered weak or flat customer satisfaction for the fourth
quarter of 2014, while online retail posted a year-over-year gain.

Xiaomi's One Shot at Success in the US
Xiaomi may soon take its first steps into the U.S. How will it do? I
have some suggestions to offer. If it follows them, its chances of
success will increase. If it doesn't, it may face the same problems that
have dogged Microsoft, BlackBerry, Motorola, HTC and many others.
Wireless in the U.S. is a booming business, but it's not easy to break

Pivotal Punts Big Data Platform to Open Source
Pivotal on Wednesday announced its decision to open source all of the
core components of its big data platform, becoming the first big data
industry player to do so. The company also announced its participation
in the Open Data Platform, which seeks to encourage more enterprise
collaboration, along with the adoption of modern, scalable data
architectures.

Yandex Asks Russian Authorities to Drop the Hammer on Google
Yandex has asked Russia's antitrust authorities to look into whether
Google is breaking the country's laws by not allowing preinstallation of
third-party services on Android devices. Three smartphone vendors told
Yandex last year that they couldn't install its search engine as the
default, the company claimed. Yandex is seeking to have the Android OS
unbundled from Google Search.
