Awesome hack brings iPhone 6's best new feature to Android
Smartphones have gotten gigantic in the past few years. Samsung wasn’t the first phone maker to start churning out huge handsets, but it certainly played the biggest role in popularized the “phablet” category, and in increasing the size of the displays on non-phablet smartphones as well. Samsung caused such a major shift in the industry, in fact, that even Apple had no choice but to play follow the leader. And by following Samsung and making bigger iPhones, Apple ended up recording the most profitable quarter in history. Apple was late to the game when it comes to launching bigger phones, but the company did introduce a simple but brilliant new feature alongside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. And now, Android users finally have access to that great new feature.

Leaked benchmarks show Samsung's Galaxy S6 will be the most powerful phone ever made
The Galaxy S6 Edge, the curved-screen version of the regular Galaxy S6 model, has supposedly been spotted in AnTuTu's benchmark database, revealing the phone will offer significant performance improvements over last year’s model. In fact, the Galaxy S6 Edge broke all existing benchmark records, though it's worth remembering that certain smartphone makers, including Samsung, have been found in the past to optimize their devices for such benchmark apps. As a result, benchmark scores might not always be the most important thing to take into account when comparing devices.

A top secret new Apple project may have just been uncovered

2014's sleekest Android phone finally starts getting Lollipop
It might not have been the best-selling Android phone of 2014, but there’s little room to argue that the HTC One M8 isn’t the best-looking Android phone of 2014. And now, on the dawn of the HTC One M9’s debut, last year’s flagship smartphone is finally starting to receive its Android 5.0 Lollipop update in the United States.

Sony's new Android smartphone isn't the Galaxy S6 rival you've been waiting for

Samsung's stumbles mean there's no one to stop Apple from crushing everything in its path
Samsung’s smartphone profits have been taking big hits over the past year and that means Apple has become just about the only smartphone vendor in the world whose phones make significant profits. For a long time, Apple and Samsung ruled supreme as the world’s only two consistently profitable smartphone vendors but new data from Canaccord Genuity suggests Apple is now the only one left in the driver’s seat.

Obama Was 'Bullshitting' on Gay Marriage
One of President Obama's closest advisers said he lied to the country for his own political benefit when he publicly stated his opposition to same-sex marriage in 2008. David Axelrod writes that he knew Obama supported gay marriage in 2008 in his new book, Believer: My Forty Years in Politics. He quotes Obama as saying "I'm just not very good at bullshitting," after a campaign event where he stated his opposition. Obama later announced his support for gay marriage during his second presidential campaign, claiming he had "evolved."

Clintons Got $81M Via Shady HSBC Clients
Now that the identities of some of the wealthiest users of HSBC's tax-avoidance scheme in Switzerland have been made public, it seems the Clinton Foundation was one of the major beneficiaries. The Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation received as much as $81 million from donors who utilized HSBC's preferential practices for allegedly avoiding taxes and hiding assets. The major donors include Jeffrey Epstein, a man who in addition to profiting from HSBC's accommodations for wealthy clients is also a convicted sex offender. The new information could be unhelpful for Hillary Clinton, who is planning to play up income inequality as part her presumed presidential campaign.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn firmly denied charges of aggravated pimping at a trial in northern France. "I committed no crime," the former IMF chief said when he took the stand Tuesday, though he did admit to participating in the orgies organized by businessman David Roque in Lille. He is facing charges along with 13 others, including a former police commissioner and a brothel owner nicknamed "Dodo the Pimp." The former French presidential hopeful was attacked by topless Femen protesters who jumped on his car when he arrived at the trial. Strauss-Kahn has faced multiple allegations of sexual assault during his career, including a 2011 case involving a New York City hotel maid that earned international attention.

4,000 Lynching Victims Named
From 1877 to 1950, nearly 4,000 blacks were lynched across the South. On Tuesday, their names were finally revealed. The Equal Justice Project released an inventory that includes 700 people whose deaths were previously unaccounted for in lynching records. "If you're trying to make a point that the amount of racial violence is underestimated, well then, there's no doubt about it," said Professor E.M. Beck of the University of Georgia, who has worked on researching and revising other lynching records. "What people don't realize here is just how many there were, and how close. Places they drive by every day." The organization plans to erect markers and memorials across the 16 states where blacks were hung, shot, beaten, stabbed, castrated, and set on fire.

Assad: I Do Get Info on ISIS Strikes
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claimed his administration receives information about the U.S.-led attacks on ISIS and is kept informed of the campaign via third parties, including Iraq. He made the remarks during a BBC interview, though stressed he did not coordinate with the U.S. "They don't talk to us, we don't talk to them," he said during an interview in Damascus. "Sometimes they [the third parties] convey message, general message, but there's nothing tactical." While Assad also denounced the U.S. plan to train moderate rebels as a "pipe-dream," his public admission regarding knowledge of the campaign suggests the hardline U.S. stance against Syria may be softening.

Jesse Matthew Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of University of Virginia second-year student Hannah Graham, according to reports from local media in Charlottesville. The charges are expected to be announced at a press conference Tuesday. Graham was last seen publicly at a bar with Matthew on Sept. 13, 2014. Her remains were found on an abandoned property in Albemarle County, Virginia, on Oct. 18. Matthew has already been charged in Graham's disappearance—with abduction with intent to defile. Officials say Matthew has been forensically linked to the body of Morgan Harrington, a Virginia Tech student who was found dead in January 2010. He has been jailed for attempted murder, rape, and sexual-assault charges in regard to the rape and sexual assault of a Fairfax woman in 2005.

Malaysian Leader Kept in Jail for Sodomy
A sodomy conviction against the leader of Malaysia's opposition party was upheld by the country's top court Tuesday. Anwar Ibrahim's final appeal of last year's lower court ruling was rejected. Ibrahim accused the judges of being "partners in crime" with Malaysia's governing party, which has a history of using authoritarian tactics to remain in control. "You chose to be on the dark side," he told them. Ibrahim, 67, has already served six years in prison for a separate sodomy charge, but he successfully appealed it in 2004. While sodomy is punishable for heterosexual and homosexual couples in Malaysia by as much as 20 years in prison, it is rarely enforced in modern times.

Boston Gets Record Snowfall
All rail and subway lines in Boston were suspended from Monday evening until Wednesday as the city braced for a massive storm, which has already dumped 20 inches in the last 24 hours. Boston City Hall and public schools were also closed for the second day in a row. The city has recorded a new 30-day high of 72.6 inches, with 64.4 inches falling in the past 14 days alone. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency as six or seven feet fell in parts of the state. Some places already feeling the brunt of three storms in the past two weeks will get 70 to 80 inches of snow. Three buildings collapsed Monday morning. While the region is expected to get a brief reprieve Wednesday, it is expected to be hit with another storm that could bring "significant" snowfall on Thursday or Friday.

'Better Call Saul' Breaks Cable Record
The premiere of Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul was the highest-rated series debut in cable-TV history. Some 6.9 million people watched Sunday night on AMC, right after the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead. What's more, Saul scored big with the 4.4 million viewers in the 18-49 age range. The two back-to-back shows may have drawn viewers away from the Grammys, which had its lowest ratings in six years. Ratings are not yet in for the second episode, which premiered Monday night.

HUFFPOLLSTER: Large Majority Trusts Childhood Vaccines

Posted: 10 Feb 2015 05:16 AM PST

Large Majority Trusts Childhood Vaccines

A huge majority considers the MMR vaccine safe for children. The emerging Democratic domestic policy agenda focuses on parents. And Hillary Clinton's advantage is hiding in plain sight. This is HuffPollster for Tuesday, February 10, 2015.

NO PARTISAN DIFFERENCES IN VACCINE VIEWS - Pew Research: "An 83% majority of the public says vaccines for diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) are safe for healthy children, while about one-in-ten (9%) think such vaccines are not safe. An additional 7% volunteer that they don’t know. Majorities across virtually every demographic and partisan group view the vaccines as safe. However, there are some differences in attitudes, with less educated people and younger adults more likely to say they are not safe.
The new national survey by the Pew Research Center, conducted Feb. 5-8 among 1,003 adults, finds Republicans (89%) and Democrats (87%) generally agree that such vaccines are safe for children who are healthy...Three-quarters or more in every age group say vaccines for MMR are safe. However, among adults 50 and older, 90% express this view, compared with 77% of adults 18-29 and 81% of those 30-49." [Pew]

2015-02-10-PewVaccinePieChart.png

'No reason it should be otherwise' - Tara Haelle: "'Vaccines aren’t a partisan issue. The consensus in favor of vaccination in this country is very strong and extends across every religious, racial and political group,' says Brendan Nyhan, an assistant professor of government at Dartmouth College, who has studied the way individuals assess information about vaccination. 'There’s no reason it should be otherwise—communicable diseases don’t care what party you support.' Indeed, a skim of other political contenders for 2016 reveals that the vast majority support vaccinating children against diseases." [Politico]

More on vaccination geography:

-The vaccination rate for every kindergarten in California, mapped. [NYT]

-States with looser immunization laws have lower rates of vaccination. [HuffPost]

EMERGING DEMOCRATIC FOCUS ON PARENTS - Nate Cohn: "The emerging Democratic agenda is meant to appeal to parents. The policies under discussion — paid family leave; universal preschool; an expanded earned-income tax credit and child tax credit; free community college and perhaps free four-year college in time — are intended both to alleviate the burdens on middle-class families and to expand educational opportunity for children. The result is a thematic platform addressing some of the biggest sources of anxiety about the future of the middle class....The parental agenda has the potential to resonate among the large group of voters with children under 18 at home, 36 percent of the electorate in 2012. It might also resonate among the already Democratic-leaning young voters of the Obama era, 18 to 29 years old in 2008, who are now entering prime childbearing years. The birthrate among millennials has dropped to near-record or record lows, depending on the age cohort, probably in part because of economic insecurity. Weekly earnings for full-time workers aged 25 to 34 are down 3.8 percent since 2000." [NYT]

CLINTON'S STRENGTH AMONG WHITE COLLAR WOMEN - Ron Brownstein: "Much of the debate about Hillary Rodham Clinton's potential appeal to female voters may be focusing on the wrong group of women. Probably the most frequently asked question about Clinton's possible coalition as a Democratic nominee in 2016 is whether she can win back the working-class white women who have moved away from her party since 1996. On that issue, the evidence is ambivalent in months of early polling that pits Clinton against potential Republican nominees. But polls over the past year almost invariably have found Clinton improving—often substantially—over President Obama's lackluster 2012 performance among white-collar white women....All polls of the 2016 race at this point are recording only distant impressions long before most voters have seriously focused on their choices. The actual campaign, and events yet to occur, will inevitably scramble the equation. Yet, especially with a candidate as familiar as Clinton, these early soundings can be viewed as a kind of rebuttable presumption: They sketch the coalition that may naturally gravitate to her unless opponents present them with a case not to." [National Journal]

TUESDAY'S 'OUTLIERS' - Links to the best of news at the intersection of polling, politics and political data:

-Governors John Kasich (R-Ohio) and Tom Wolf (D-Pa.) get positive marks in their states while Rick Scott's (R-Fla.) job rating remains under water. [Quinnipiac]

-40 percent of Americans want Brian Williams to resign, 35 percent do not, 25 percent are unsure. [Rasmussen]

-Williams has lasted longer than the average NBC anchor. [538]

-A large majority of Alabama voters likely oppose same-sex marriage. [NYT]

-Max Ehrenfreund wishes politicians would stop using the term "middle class." [WashPost]

-People with darker skin perceive slower police response times throughout the Americas. [WashPost]

-The Jewish population of Europe continues to decline. [Pew]

-1 in 4 Israeli voters are undecided about the March election. [Times of Israel]

-Britons oppose sending weapons to Ukraine. [YouGov]

-Millions who use Facebook don't realize they're using "the internet." [Quartz]
