Jan 6, 2015 12:00 AM ET
Lunch was a bit awkward. It was around 1 p.m. on a warm October day in New York. A group of Wall Street investors were tucking into chicken in a red-wine demi-glace and Brussels sprouts at the Plaza Hotel. They’d convened for Jim Grant’s fall conference, hosted by the influential editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer.

On The Blog: On the Cusp of a Historic Change

Greece is on the cusp of a historic change. SYRIZA is no longer just a hope for Greece and the Greek people. It is also an expectation of a change of course for the whole of Europe. Because Europe will not come out of the crisis without a policy change, and the victory of SYRIZA in the 25th of January elections will strengthen the forces of change. Because the dead end in Greece is the dead end of today's Europe.

The 3 biggest game changers announced at CES 2015 so far
Let’s be honest: There’s a lot of useless garbage that gets announced at CES every year that we’ll never hear about again. Because of this, it’s good to sift through the endless streams of announcements to pick out the potential game-changing technologies that really could have an impact on our lives in the coming years. With this in mind, we’ve written up what we think are the three biggest game changers announced at CES 2015 so far.

Sony unleashes the Walkman ZX2, a digital music player for people who crave killer sound
You may think that dedicated digital music players are on their way out and that the Sony Walkman died a long time ago. Sony thinks you’re wrong on both counts because it’s just unveiled a new digital music player at CES 2015 called the Walkman ZX2 that’s tailored to people who value high-resolution audio.

One more crucial Galaxy S6 detail seems to have leaked
Samsung is reportedly demoing various Galaxy S6 versions at CES 2015, though the South Korean company is only showing the device to partners behind closed doors. Even so, some Galaxy S6 rumors still get through, and SamMobile is reporting that it has found out one other crucial detail about the upcoming Android flagship handset.

You can buy an unlocked SIM-free iPhone 6 from Apple right now
Free at last, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are free at last of carrier restrictions. Just as 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman reported on Monday, Apple is now selling fully unlocked, SIM-free iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models on its website and in retail stores. Although before you could buy an unlocked iPhone 6 from T-Mobile, those devices did come with T-Mobile SIM cards. With the option to get a SIM-free iPhone 6 from Apple’s website, you can just insert your own SIM card and hook it up to the carrier of your choice.

Now we know where failed smartphone platforms go to die
One of the weirder trends that I’ve noticed at CES 2015 so far is the resurrection of three thought-to-be-dead smartphone platforms that have been brought back to life as smart TV platforms. Panasonic announced that its own smart TVs will run Mozilla’s Firefox OS, LG said that its new TVs would run on Palm’s beloved-but-defunct webOS, and Samsung showed off its first TVs running on its own Tizen platform.

One company may have figured out wireless charging technology once and for all
The problem with current wireless charging devices is that in most cases a charging pad tied to the wall is needed for actually charging devices wirelessly. That's exactly what startup Energous wants to change in the future, as the company has come up with a solution that would offer true wireless charging powers, Engadget reports. Demoed at CES 2015, the WattUp is a wireless router that can beam energy wirelessly to devices as far as 20 feet away.

Meet the Boss, the world's first Tor-certified Android smartphone
Even though it has a large 7-inch display that's usually seen on tablets, the Boss is actually a dual-SIM Android smartphone that comes with Tor privacy-enhancing features. Announced at CES 2015, the Boss phone is currently seeking funding on Indiegogo, aiming to reach its $150,000 goal by March 2nd.

Mercedes unveils future of driving with autonomous self-driving hydrogen car
Google isn't the only company out there interested in putting self-driving cars on the road, and the search giant may have some serious competition in the future, with companies such as Mercedes-Benz also looking to offer passengers smart cars that drive themselves around. Unlike Google's cutesy self-driving car concept, the new autonomous car unveiled on Monday by Mercedes-Benz looks more like the luxurious smart car you'd want to own in the future.

D-Link's scary looking new routers are ready to deliver insanely fast Wi-Fi speeds
D-Link has a bunch of new routers on display at CES 2015, all ready to deliver serious wireless performance… although at first glance they look more like scary toys ready to turn into some of Galvatron’s minions rather than a piece of technology meant to help you surf the web at incredibly fast speeds.

Netflix is going to help you find the smart TV of your dreams
Buying a new television can be debilitating, but Netflix wants to make the decision easier for its subscribers. That’s why the company behind the streaming service is introducing the Netflix Recommended TV program, an evaluation program which will grade smart TVs based on how well they interact with various Internet TV services, including Netflix.

HUFFPOLLSTER: The New Congress Is Still Overwhelmingly Christian

By Mark Blumenthal & Ariel Edwards-Levy

The new Congress has the same religious composition as the old one. Few blame President Obama or Mayor de Blasio for the New York City police murders. And Americans just want to be loved. Is that so wrong? This is HuffPollster for Tuesday, January 6, 2015.

NEW CONGRESS REMAINS OVERWHELMINGLY CHRISTIAN - Pew Research: "When the new, 114th Congress is sworn in on Jan. 6, 2015, Republicans will control both chambers of the legislative body for the first time since the 109th Congress (2005-2006). Yet, despite the sea change in party control, there is relatively little change in the overall religious makeup of Congress, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center. More than nine-in-ten members of the House and Senate (92%) are Christian, and about 57% are Protestant, roughly the same as in the 113th Congress (90% and 56%, respectively)....As was the case in the 113th Congress, the biggest difference between Congress and the general public is in the share of those who say they are religiously unaffiliated. This group makes up 20% of the general public but just 0.2% of Congress. The only member of Congress who describes herself as religiously unaffiliated is Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz." [Pew]

MURDER OF NYC POLICE: WHO'S TO BLAME? - Peter Moore: "YouGov's latest research shows that 44% Americans think that the people who have been protesting the recent police killings in Ferguson and Staten Island do shoulder at least some responsibility, though 34% do not think the protestors have any responsibility for the killings. Most Americans (52%) say that Barack Obama does not have any responsibility for the killings, and people also tend to say that Eric Holder (40%) and Bill de Blasio (39%) do not have any responsibility." [YouGov]

AMERICANS WOULD RATHER THE COUNTRY BE LOVED THAN FEARED - 60 Minutes and Vanity Fair: "Two out of three Americans think that being loved around the world would make the United States more secure and three out of 10 think that being feared would make us more secure. The majority agrees with the Beatles that 'all you need is love' and the minority agrees with the famous Italian political theorist Niccolo Machiavelli who said 'it is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot have both.'...The foreign powers that Americans currently fear the most are ISIS 38 percent, China 29 percent, Russia 19 percent and to a much lesser degree Liberia two percent and WikiLeaks two percent." Cheat Sheet - The Shadowy Vet Who Tried to Overthrow a Country

Posted: 06 Jan 2015 05:31 AM PST

Read This, Skip That ....

January 06, 2015
RAMBO

A U.S. military veteran was charged on Monday with the bizarre crime of plotting to overthrow the government of Gambia. Papa Faal told FBI agents that other U.S. veterans were involved in his attempt to storm the president's home, reports Jacob Siegel. Now, Faal and his co-conspirator are in U.S. custody, while the whereabouts of his minions who survived the attempted overthrow are unknown.

INTOLERANT

Thousands of protesters descended on several German cities Monday night to rally against what they refer to as the Islamization of Europe. The Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West (Pegida) organized a demonstration of some 18,000 people in Dresden, with other marches in Berlin, Cologne, and Stuttgart. German Chancellor Angela Merkel along with other senior politicians and business leaders spoke out against the group and have urged Germans to reject anti-immigration rallies. Thousands of people organized counterprotests in Berlin, Cologne, and Dresden while lights were shut off at Cologne Cathedral, and Berlin's Brandenburg Gate and TV Tower to show solidarity with German Muslims.

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE

The Pentagon just unveiled its program to train Iraqi troops to fight ISIS—and it's only six weeks long. Even military officials concede the program is insufficient, reports Nancy A. Youssef. After almost a year, the U.S. is no closer to creating the ground forces needed to beat the world's foremost terrorist group.

SIREN

Police are searching for two men suspected of shooting two NYPD officers responding to a robbery call in the Bronx on Monday night. One officer was shot in the back and the other in the arm (neither injury is life-threatening). The two plainclothes officers approached suspects who had entered a restaurant when one fired on the officers. The officers returned fire before the suspects fled on foot, carjacked a couple, and then abandoned the vehicle and continued on foot. The two cops were not targeted, unlike the Dec. 20 slaying of officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in Brooklyn, according to police. The shooting occurred just hours after Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton touted record-low crime figures in the Big Apple.

ALL ABOARD

Over the past 12 months, some 170,000 migrants from Syria have fled their war-torn country by way of boat. While many have perished in the high-stakes smuggling racket of human cargo, others are trying to build new lives in European cities. Barbie Latza Nadeau has followed Syrian refugees as they learn to navigate life in Italy and beyond.

SCALISE'S FUTURE UNCERTAIN "The scandal over Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise's 2002 speech to a white supremacist group has so badly damaged his image inside the House Republican Conference that he faces serious questions over his political future, according to interviews with multiple aides and lawmakers -- including some Scalise allies.
Scalise's job as House majority whip remains safe -- and Speaker John Boehner has publicly backed him -- but he may be too toxic for some Republican circles." [Politico]

PETCO PULLS ALL CHINESE-MADE DOG AND CAT TREATS "Petco said Monday it has removed all remaining Chinese-made dog and cat treats from its website and stores nationwide because of concerns they have sickened thousands of pets and killed 1,000 dogs in the U.S. since 2007. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says initial tests have not connected the Chinese jerky and rawhide treats to the illnesses, but the San Diego-based company and its rival PetSmart vowed in May to ban the snacks."
