Eli Lake: "With the victory this week over Islamic State forces at Kobani, Syria, one might think that the U.S. and Iraqi governments would be looking to increase shipments of armaments to the Iraqi Kurdish forces fighting on the ground. But according to the Kurd overseeing much of the ground campaign in northern Iraq, his Peshmerga units are facing a shortage of ammunition and guns just at the moment they have turned the tide against the jihadists." Sound Transit Photo of the Week for January 30 - February 5, 2015

Manitou Trestle mural
After talking with South Tacoma neighbors and researching local history, artists Claudia Riedener, Kenji Stoll and Chris Jordan created the Manitou Trestle mural. The mural combines native plant forms, community quotes and local historical architecture into the story of South Tacoma's past, present and future. The dedication of Manitou Trestle is Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. at the STAR Center, 3873 South 66th St. in Tacoma. Everyone is welcome. The event is within easy walking distance to the artwork, which is at a railroad trestle used by Sounder commuter trains at South 66th Street.

Project update: Northgate Link Extension

Sound Transit website

Light rail PROJECT UPDATE: Northgate Link Extension

Angle Lake rendering

Construction crews work to restore pavement in the intersection of 12th Avenue NE and NE 63rd Street. Crews will complete this work the first week of February and plan to move up to NE 65th Street.

Section of NE 43rd Street reopened at U District Station site

For the first time since spring 2014 drivers heading northbound on Brooklyn Avenue NE can turn right onto NE 43rd Street to get to the Ave. Construction crews opened the road on Friday, Jan. 23.

The eastbound only lane helps the neighborhood during U District station construction by providing access to local businesses and residences. The street will reopen to two way traffic at the end of station construction.

Pavement restoration at Roosevelt Station site now beginning in February

A project to replace much of the pavement at the intersection of NE 65th Street and 12th Avenue NE is now scheduled to start on Monday, February 2. To do the work as safely and quickly as possible, crews will periodically shift traffic lanes, create temporary bike and pedestrian detours and close some parking.

Crews will place the final layer of asphalt in the intersection in spring, marking the end of utility relocation at the intersection for the Roosevelt Station construction site.

Pavement restoration is needed after utility relocations required repeated trenching at the intersection prior to the excavation of Roosevelt Station.

Transmission line relocation update for Northgate Station

Sound Transit's effort to find a suitable alignment for an electrical transmission line relocation may be close to a solution.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has agreed to allow Sound Transit to put the line along the west side of I-5 if Sound Transit can meet several WSDOT requirements. Sound Transit is now assessing whether the proposed alignment is feasible. Initial indications have been favorable so far.

If the I-5 alignment is not feasible, Sound Transit will stay with its original plan to place the alignment along Meridian Avenue N and N 115th Street.

The transmission line must be relocated to provide a safe place to build an elevated guideway at the future Northgate Station.

Stay tuned for further updates as this work progresses.

Apple isn't even Samsung's biggest nightmare
Samsung’s holiday quarter wasn’t as devastating as the previous quarter, which saw the company’s profit plummet 60% on-year, but the company’s fourth-quarter report still showed steep declines in profit and revenue as Samsung continues its struggle to steady the ship. The South Korean giant has enjoyed explosive growth over the past couple of years, but pressure from Apple at the high end and from dirt-cheap Android phone makers at the low end has created a puzzle that Samsung can’t quite seem to piece together yet. There is no question that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus comprise a terrifying nightmare for Samsung, which has seen its high-end phone sales dwindle since the phones were released this past September. But as it turns out, Samsung’s biggest headache may lie elsewhere.

Study: iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the most valuable handsets of 2014
A British study conducted by trade-in monitoring company CompareMyMoble, and shared by Phone Arena, reveals that Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the most valuable devices of 2014, followed distantly by Samsung phones such as the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3.

The 2-minute 'Game of Thrones' season 5 trailer you've been waiting for just leaked
HBO has always been a cut above the competition, but the network really outdid itself with Game of Thrones. The big-budget fantasy series based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series quickly became one of HBO’s most popular shows ever, and its fifth season is easily its most highly anticipated season yet. HBO has posted short clips along with a teaser here and there, but now the big 2-minute Game of Thrones season 5 you’ve been waiting for has just leaked.

Video: Watch Marshawn Lynch and Gronk play Mortal Kombat on Conan
Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch and Rob Gronkowski are two of the NFL’s most entertaining personalities, although for very different reasons. While Gronk is a gregarious, hard-partying lug, Lynch is often hilariously unfriendly during media interviews and will often respond with a single sentence to every question he gets asked. Conan O’Brien decided to get the two of them together during Super Bowl week down in Arizona to play the yet-to-be-released game Mortal Kombat X and the results were about as amusing as you’d expect.

Google Fiber is going out of its way to make rival ISPs miserable

Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S Edge expected to include Gear VR support
Against all odds, the Gear VR turned out to be an incredibly cool accessory. Unfortunately, unless you own a Galaxy Note 4, you aren’t able to use one, but according to SamMobile, that’s going to change. SamMobile’s sources say that both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S Edge will support the virtual reality display when they launch later this year.

Google Gives WebView the Cold Shoulder
Google has decided not to fix vulnerabilities in WebView for Android 4.3
and older, sparking heated discussions among developers. Those versions
of WebView run on the WebKit browser. Fixing them "required changes to
significant portions of the code and was no longer practical to do so
safely," explained Adrian Ludwig, lead engineer for Android security.

SpaceX Video Stirs Excitement for Falcon Heavy
SpaceX on Thursday released a computer-generated animation demonstrating
how the three Falcon 9 cores of its Falcon Heavy rocket, scheduled for
launch later this year, would return to Earth. The boosters would land
vertically at a selected site. The Falcon Heavy will be the most
powerful rocket in the world, being able to lift more than 53 metric
tons, or 117,000 pounds, into low earth orbit.

Canada Levitates Data from File-Sharing Sites
Canada's spy agency, the Communications Security Establishment, has been
eavesdropping on 102 free file upload sites, including Sendspace,
Rapidshare and Megaupload, which has been shut down. A CSE program
called "Levitation" lets analysts access information on 10-15 million
uploads and downloads of files from such sites daily, according to
documents released by whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

Kofi Annan Blogs: The Global Order Can Only Be Saved If New Powers Are Let In

The Security Council must be enlarged, and developing countries should be given greater voting rights in the Bretton Woods institutions: the IMF and the World Bank. In exchange, the world's newest powers must begin to take on a greater share of responsibility for the global order upon which their success depends. They can no longer stand on the sidelines, denouncing the injustices of the past. Instead, they must join their peers in building the future. Read more.

HIT AND RUN

Rap mogul Suge Knight has been arrested for allegedly killing a man in a hit-and-run in Compton. Knight is accused of running over two men with his truck Thursday afternoon after an argument on the film set of Straight Outta Compton, a biopic about NWA. The confrontation began around 3 p.m., when Knight and two unidentified men began arguing, said the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. About 20 minutes after the alleged argument on set, the victims visited a burger shack where Knight is believed to have followed them before running them over in the parking lot, officials said. Witnesses said the truck hit the men, then backed over them before leaving the scene. One man was killed, the other severely injured.

MITT 3.0

Mitt Romney will announce his decision whether or not to run for president for a third time at 11 a.m. ET Friday. On Thursday evening, Romney sent out an email to supporters asking them to join him on a conference call Friday for "an update." The same night, Romney sent a memo to his inner circle highlighting three reasons he should run: He thinks he's the only qualified Republican in the field, polling is favorable to a win, and he thinks he can do better as a campaigner in 2016. There are also reportedly two reasons he would not run, including the toll it would take on the Romneys as well as how bruising the GOP nomination fight would be.

HUFFPOLLSTER: Scientists' Opinions Are Very Different From Most Americans'

Scientists' Opinions Are Very Different From Most Americans'

Pew Research finds the public at odds with science on a list of key issues. Desire for a decrease in immigration is lower than it was during the Bush years. And Afghans aren't comfortable with the shrinking number of U.S. troops in their country. This is HuffPollster for Friday, January 30, 2015.

PEW RESEARCH EXPLORES THE PUBLIC'S VIEWS ON SCIENCE - Cary Funk and Lee Raine: "Science holds an esteemed place among citizens and professionals. Americans recognize the accomplishments of scientists in key fields and, despite considerable dispute about the role of government in other realms, there is broad public support for government investment in scientific research...[For example] 79% of adults say that science has made life easier for most people and a majority is positive about science’s impact on the quality of health care, food and the environment...[and] About seven-in-ten adults say that government investments in engineering and technology (72%) and in basic scientific research (71%) usually pay off in the long run. Some 61% say that government investment is essential for scientific progress, while 34% say private investment is enough to ensure scientific progress is made." [Pew]

Finds huge gap between the views of the public and scientists on science issues - Seth Borenstein: "The American public and U.S. scientists are light-years apart on science issues. And 98 percent of surveyed scientists say it's a problem that we don't know what they're talking about. Scientists are far less worried about genetically modified food, pesticide use and nuclear power than is the general public, according to matching polls of both the general public and the country's largest general science organization. Scientists were more certain that global warming is caused by man, evolution is real, overpopulation is a danger and mandatory vaccination against childhood diseases is needed. In eight of 13 science-oriented issues, there was a 20-percentage-point or higher gap separating the opinions of the public and members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, according to survey work by the Pew Research Center. The gaps didn't correlate to any liberal-conservative split; the scientists at times take more traditionally conservative views and at times more liberal." [AP/HuffPost]

2015-01-30-PewSciencevsPublic.png

Why Pew Research is going deeper on science - Lee Raine: [T]oday’s publication marks a more formal commitment to studying the intersection of science with all aspects of society – from public opinion, to politics and policymaking, to religious and ethical considerations, to education and the economy...We hope to explore that and to understand more fully how news and information about scientific activities makes its way to citizens, how they understand it, and how, in some circumstances, they contribute to it. In the coming months, [Pew Research] will release more findings from our surveys of the public and scientists. A forthcoming report will provide a detailed analysis of the partisan and ideological differences that underlie some of the disputed policy areas. Another will pay particular attention to how people’s spiritual views and practices are tied to these issues. And yet another will look more directly at issues related to Americans’ general knowledge about science phenomena, updating previous research we have done about citizens’ science literacy." [Pew]

POSITIONS ON IMMIGRATION LEVELS MOSTLY STEADY - Andrew Dugan: "As congressional Republicans weigh whether to file a lawsuit against President Barack Obama for his executive actions on immigration, 60% of Americans say they are dissatisfied with the level of immigration into the country today...In a follow-up question that queried Americans who are dissatisfied with the current levels of immigration, the majority -- 39% of U.S. adults in total -- said they would like to see the level of immigration decrease. This ranks among the lowest level of Americans who are dissatisfied and express a desire for less immigration since Gallup began asking the question in 2001, even if it is nominally higher than last year's 35%. The share of Americans who are dissatisfied and want more immigration (7%) was unchanged from 2014. Fourteen percent of Americans said they were dissatisfied with the current level of immigration in the country, but did not express a specific preference for either increasing or decreasing it." [Gallup]

2015-01-30-GallupImmigration.png

AFGHANS WANT GREATER U.S. INVOLVEMENT NEXT YEAR - Sudarsan Raghavan: "Many Afghans would like to see a greater American role after this year than is planned, while a majority believe that last year’s runoff election that led to a U.S.-brokered power-sharing government was 'mostly fraudulent'... 46 percent said they want to see a greater commitment by U.S. forces than is in place. The United States and its NATO allies withdrew most of their forces last year and have roughly 13,000 troops in Afghanistan. The U.S. contingent is expected to shrink to about 5,000 by the end of the year...In recent weeks, senior Afghan officials have also indicated that they would like to see a greater U.S. presence after this year. Only 29 percent of Afghans said they prefer that fewer or no U.S. troops remain…Two-thirds of Afghans favor a significant role for U.S. and international forces in training Afghan forces in the future." [WashPost, Langer Research]

A HISTORY OF DISCOMFORT WITH FEDERAL DEFICITS - Kathleen Weldon: "In 1940, "People's Research asked Americans if it was important for the federal government to balance the budget in the next two years. Fifty-seven percent agreed, while 30 percent said no…Since [1973], in poll after poll, strong majorities of Americans have agreed that balancing the budget is important. However... [w]ith the introduction of a wider set of possible problems, the federal budget deficit dropped out of the top slots for several years. Since the recession, however, it has consistently been the second most-chosen top economic problem, behind unemployment... Americans' concern about the budget has always been shot through with a strong dose of skepticism for the likelihood of actually achieving a balanced budget and reducing the deficit...Though the public has often been willing to postpone or forego tax decreases to achieve a balanced budget, generally they prefer spending cuts, or spending cuts coupled with tax increases, to tax increases alone as an approach to balancing the budget... The most recent such question from CBS News/NYT in February 2014 shows attitudes have changed somewhat: 4% preferred only tax increases, 29% only spending cuts, and 65% both." [HuffPost]
