Science of work-hard-party-hard, Weight Watchers woes & more

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST

Science of work-hard-party-hard, Weight Watchers woes & more
Good morning, reader.

Here’s a song for your Saturday: Purity Ring’s “begin again

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Banks are under assault.” -- JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, announcing the bank’s $4.9 billion fourth-quarter profit.

CHATTER FODDER

Here’s how to justify shut-eye during a meeting. Closing your eyes helps you remember more details, according to a new study. By eliminating visual distractions, the brain is able to focus on and catalog more important details.

If you’re just making the happy hour, you probably deserve it. A new study shows that people who work long days drink -- a lot. The researchers defined long hours as more than 48 hours per week. What constitutes heavy drinking? According to the International Centre for Alcohol Policies, it’s more than 14 drinks for women and 21 drinks for men over the course of a week.

The top honcho in your office might be a messy eater. A new video from U.C. Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center combines recent research to illustrate that people who perceive themselves as having more power tend to act more impulsively and more selfishly. Summarizing an experiment, one researcher said: “Lo and behold, our high-power person is more likely to eat with their mouth open, lips smacking, crumbs literally like falling onto their sweater. It’s ridiculous.” And gross.

Stereotypes may be causing the “genius” gender gap. New research found that as the importance academics in a field of study placed on personal brilliance increased, the percentage of women with PhDs in that field decreased. Why is that? “Cultural associations link men, but not women, to raw intellectual brilliance,” said Sarah-Jane Leslie, the Princeton professor who led the study. Solution? We need more female versions of Sherlock Holmes and Will Hunting.

Why is Weight Watchers struggling? January is usually a huge month for the weight-loss program, as overweight customers act on their New Year’s resolutions to slim down. But beefed-up competition is driving down profits in a big way.

Blame these countries for global warming. While it’s a worldwide problem, these seven industrialized nations are responsible for the majority of the carbon pollution warming up the planet: the U.S., Russia, China, Germany, Brazil, India and the United Kingdom. A new study found that those countries accounted for 60 percent of all man-made temperature increases measured between 1750 and 2005.

Gadgets: A New Galaxy, Awesome Audio, and One Ring That Doesn't Rule
Welcome to Gadget Dreams and Nightmares, the column that takes freshly
announced gadgets out for a hypothetical test run, rendering judgement
long before they hit the shelves. In the offing this week: Samsung's
latest mid-range smartphone, a gesture-based ring, shiny headphones and
much more. Samsung has another mid-range smartphone in the Galaxy A7.

Texas May Be Ground Zero for Musk's Hyperloop Dreams
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to build a test
track, most likely in Texas, for his envisioned Hyperloop high-speed
transportation system. The goal is to allow experimentation with
Hyperloop pods, the equivalent of train carriages. The project will be
"entirely funded by Musk's companies and other interested private
companies," said Frost & Sullivan's said Vishwas Shankar.

Xiaomi Launches Galaxy Note Killers in China
Xiaomi on Wednesday announced two new flagship smartphones in Beijing,
the Mi Note and the Mi Note Pro. The Mi Note has a metal frame and is
protected on the front and back with 3D curved Gorilla Glass 3, which
apparently makes it highly resistant to scratches and shattering. Xiaomi
compared the Mi Note to the iPhone 6 Plus, but it appears that Samsung's
Galaxy Note is its real target.

3 Reasons Apple Won't Pull the Rug Out From Under GoPro
Despite having the most popular camera on the planet in the form of the
iPhone, the odds of Apple pulling the rug out from under GoPro by
building its own action sports camera system -- even with using its
forthcoming Apple Watch as a controller -- are so low they stand in
stark contrast to the hysterical selloff of GoPro stock this week. What
happened?
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81594.html

Virtual Traffic Lights Could Revolutionize City Driving
The average American worker spends almost half an hour commuting each
day, but virtual traffic lights could cut that almost in half. If
traditional traffic lights were replaced with virtual ones, the results
could include not only a reduction of up to 40 percent in urban workers'
commute times, but also lower carbon emissions, less congestion and
fewer accidents.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/81591.html

Cameron Takes Hard Line on Encrypted Communications
UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who is standing for re-election, has
vowed to ban personal encrypted communications apps such as Snapchat and
WhatsApp if he is voted in. He also will allow UK government security
agencies to monitor communications, with warrants signed by the Home
Secretary. "The first duty of any government is to keep our country and
our people safe," Cameron declared.

Google Pulls Down Shades on Glass' Future
Google on Thursday announced that it will shut down its Glass Explorer
Program in order to refocus -- but that new versions of Glass will be
forthcoming at some unspecified time. The Google Glass team will be

Etsy reportedly is working on an initial public offering that could
debut this quarter. The crafts and antiques etailer hopes to raise $300

to originate in the Big Apple occurred during the dot-com bubble.
