| LAND OF THE FREE Posted: 07 Nov 2014 12:10 PM PST "I don't want buns of steel... just buns of cinnamon." Welcome to The Carry-On, a handy grab bag of HuffPost Travel’s most riveting industry snippets, travel hacks and destination discoveries from the past week. In this roundup, we hope to pack seven days of our site’s breaking news into a tote of travel-size tidbits, small enough to fit any overhead bin. America is one confusing place. Allow us to explain: We kicked this week off with the 10 best cities in America. (No offense, Norman, Oklahoma, but we really didn't see you coming.) But THEN we met the 10 most all-American cities in America. So apparently "all-American" cities are not the "best" cities? And since when is the sleazy Santa Cruz boardwalk "all-American"?! Unless we're talking about America according to Snooki, this ranking makes zero sense. But THEN we met the 13 greatest food towns in America. Not the "best," not the most "American," just the "greatest." Oh, America. Land of the free, home of the endless superlatives. We think we'll just ditch our country and head to Nördlingen, the little German town in a crater. That place is a hole lot less complicated. Happy weekend, travelers! There are also scenes of clunky, cliched dialogue. Oh, and the brilliant Matthew McConaughey. Marlow Stern reviews Interstellar and finds a movie aiming for Stanley Kubrick-size grandeur. NOT SAFE The Supreme Court agreed Friday to review a challenge to the Affordable Care Act involving subsidies. The highest court in the land is taking a Republican-backed appeal that targeted the tax credits included under the national health-care overhaul. The tax credits help about 4 million Americans purchase coverage. A ruling blocking those credits could potentially dismantle Obamacare by rendering other provisions ineffective and destabilizing insurance markets. STEADY AS SHE GOES The October jobs report shows unemployment fell to 5.8 percent during the month, the lowest level in six years. However, U.S. payrolls added only 214,000 new jobs, down from the 256,000 added during September. Overall, the economy is continuing to show signs of improvement. Job growth has exceeded 200,000 in each of the previous nine months and fits with the Federal Reserve's optimistic decision last month to end its bond-buying program. Still, wage growth remained sluggish, with average hourly earnings only rising 3 percent in October. BUNDLE UP From the Dakotas to Texas, some 200 million people will feel the wrath of a polar vortex as early as next week. The infamous cold front will hit the north-central part of the U.S. and then expand southward and eastward. Not only will it be brutally cold, the weather may linger well past the middle of the month. The hardest-hit areas will be Minneapolis, Chicago, Fargo, and St. Louis. Temperatures could plunge by as much as 40 degrees. Temperatures may not get out of the 30s as far as east as New York. Lloyd Grove goes inside the former vice-presidential candidate's channel, with its surfeit of paeans to Ronald Reagan, a countdown of "days left in the Obama administration," and more. | |
