Posted: 30 Nov 2014 04:07 PM PST Sunday November 30th, 2014 Horrific Account Of Fraternity Gang Rape At UVa It started with this Rolling Stone article about what happened after a student says she was gang-raped by 7 frat brothers. The school was already under federal investigation, but this article exposed a much more gruesome reality than many people were aware of.  Then UVA Ordered An Investigation Of Alleged 7-Member Fraternity Gang Rape The University of Virginia wants local law enforcement to investigate an alleged gang rape at a campus fraternity said to have happened two years ago, now that a national magazine has written about the incident. A Rolling Stone article by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, published Wednesday, describes a woman, known only as Jackie, who says she attended a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity party in the fall of 2012, when she was a freshman. Jackie was there as a date of one of the brothers, according to the article. The article alleges that Jackie was led to a bedroom at the party where she was sexually assaulted by seven men. According to the article, the assailants yelled at one man who penetrated Jackie with a beer bottle, "Don't you want to be a brother?" Jackie did not disclose the alleged assault until the following spring, at the end of her freshman year, when she spoke to a university dean in charge of student misconduct, according to Rolling Stone. She declined at the time to press charges, but the dean offered to be available should she change her mind. UVA did not place the fraternity under investigation until September 2014. UVA President Teresa Sullivan said in a campuswide email Wednesday that Erdely's article contained "many details that were previously not disclosed to University officials."  Phi Kappa Psi Frat Vandalized, Students Protest After Rolling Stone Article The University of Virginia's Phi Kappa Psi fraternity was targeted for vandalism overnight Thursday following a Rolling Stone article's revelation an alleged gang rape took place at the house two years earlier. The Rolling Stone article, published Wednesday, detailed alleged failures in the university's culture and policy on sexual violence, specifically around Greek life. Late on Wednesday, the university announced it was asking local law enforcement to investigate the alleged gang rape involving seven men, a full year and a half after it was first reported to the institution. The vandals wrote "Suspend Us!" and "UVA Center For Rape Studies" on Phi Kappa Psi's property  Then, Video Emerged Showing A UVA Official Declaring Students Who've Admitted To Sexual Assault Haven't Been Expelled  Around This Point, The University Of Virginia Suspends All Fraternity Activities More Video Emerges: UVA Dean Defended Not Expelling Students In 2013 Speech: Schools 'Shouldn't Be Punitive' University of Virginia Dean of Students Allen Groves explained during a TEDx talk in 2013 why his school has avoided suspending or expelling students, even when they commit serious infractions. "The university's role, in my opinion, shouldn't be punitive," Groves said. "It ought to be risk reduction and rehabilitation and education." The talk took place on April 20, 2013, but was not uploaded until October of that year. The 10-minute address provides a more in-depth look at how a University of Virginia administrator approaches student misconduct.  In Emergency Meeting, UVA Announces More Steps To Address Campus Rape The University of Virginia's governing body, the Board of Visitors, announced during a special meeting held Tuesday that the school will begin to take several steps to address sexual assault on campus. Board Rector George Keith Martin announced that Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring hired the law firm O'Melveny & Myers to review UVA's sexual assault policies, the same group hired by Occidental College for similar guidance. Martin is asking they advise the university on various issues, including how to handle "a serious and credible allegation of sexual misconduct" where the survivor is not willing to go forward with a complaint. The special meeting came after a Rolling Stone article alleged multiple women were gang-raped at the UVA Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, though no one was ever punished for the assaults, and none of the cases were sent to police. UVA was already undergoing a sweeping investigation of its sexual assault policies by the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights. Martin said the school will now examine sexual violence prevention training for fraternity members, and possibly overhaul the Greek system. The board will have a town hall meeting, he promised, once concrete proposals are on the table. All Greek life activities are suspended at UVA until Jan. 9, 2015, when the second semester begins. However, when pressed by board members, UVA President Teresa Sullivan said she's willing to extend that suspension if policy changes cannot be implemented.  It Turns Out UVA Advises A Lot Of Other Schools Nationwide For Rape Policies In April 2010, a first-year female student at the University of Virginia sat in Dean Mark Hadley's office and told him how she had been sexually assaulted a month earlier. It was the student's first time disclosing her assault to a university official. Hadley, an association dean, sat quietly and listened. The student, who asked to remain anonymous, recalled to The Huffington Post that Hadley's first question to her was, "How are you doing in your classes?" The student says Hadley then went on to warn that because she'd missed many classes since her assault, she might land on academic probation. The student says she was not offered any information about reporting, counseling or support options available to her as a victim. (Hadley did not respond to a request for comment for this article.) That night, the student says, she attempted suicide. The student recovered, physically and emotionally, and later got involved in advocacy work supporting survivors in the community. In 2012, she had a chance to relay her concerns about how she was not presented with options as a rape victim to Allen Groves, UVA's dean of students. "The most he offered me was a box of tissues," said the student, now a graduate working full-time at a research organization, of Groves' response. "What's appalling to me and other survivors is the administration clearly knew what was happening."  So Can Change At UVA Make Campuses A Safer Place?
