| Transit Alert - Metro Transit customers are encouraged to prepare for possible snowy or icy conditions this weekend Posted: 28 Nov 2014 01:04 PM PST Metro Transit customers are encouraged to prepare for possible snowy or icy conditions this weekend
Weather forecasters are predicting colder temperatures and an increasing possibility of snow in parts of King County over the coming weekend. Metro Transit advises bus riders to plan ahead for rapidly changing travel conditions throughout the weekend.. All transit customers are advised to check the timetables for the routes they use to find out what the snow routing is in case it is implemented.
If you live in an outlying or hilly area, Metro encourages you to go to transit centers, park and ride lots or more heavily traveled flat arterials that are likely to be plowed, and where there is more transit service available. While Metro sends Transit Alerts about service disruptions they know of, rapidly changing road, traffic and weather conditions make it impossible to know about every service interruption. It may not be possible to report on service that is affected on a per-trip or per stop basis. Be aware of conditions in the areas in which you will be traveling, be prepared and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination. Buses may not operate on schedule and may be crowded. Before traveling, check Metro Online for the most current status of Metro service. Metro suggests that transit customers leave from a bus stop or park-and-ride that also has service when buses are on snow routes, in case travel conditions deteriorate later. Snow and ice create challenges for all vehicles. Transit operations can change rapidly depending on traffic and travel conditions. Here are some tips for bus travel during snowy or icy conditions: • Know the snow routing for your bus route. Check the timetables at Metro Online for snow route maps for each route. Not every bus route has snow routing, but most do; • When buses are on snow routing, some streets and bus stops may be missed and there are often delays due to travel conditions. • Metro uses an online color-coded map to keep riders informed of the status of its bus service. Bus routes are assigned into one or more of seven geographic areas within King County. When there is snow or ice on the roads, the service status of each area will be color coded and displayed on the online map. Green indicates buses are operating on normal routes; yellow that some – but not all – routes in the area are on snow routes, and red tells you that all bus routes in the entire geographic area are on snow routing; • Be prepared…and be patient. Buses are not always on schedule in snowy or icy conditions. Increased ridership during bad weather can result in crowded buses and a longer-than-usual wait on the phone for the Customer Information Office during its open hours; • Dress warmly for the walk to the bus stop, expect delays, and wear appropriate footwear for the weather, and; • Head for bus stops on main arterials or at major transfer points such as park-and-ride lots, transit centers, or shopping centers.
Updates will be provided as conditions warrant.
Thank you for riding and for using Metro’s services. |

FIGHT BACK U.S.-backed rebels in southern Syria have, at long last, made some gains, capturing multiple towns from government forces just south of Damascus. The rebels reportedly include those who graduated from a relatively new CIA training program based in Jordan. The group, called Friends of Syria, is backed by Jordan, France, the U.S., and Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, in northern Syria, U.S.-backed rebels have wilted in the face of attacks by Islamic militants. However, it should be noted that the U.S.-backed rebels in the south have achieved success while working with fighters from al Qaeda's Syria branch. NEW AND IMPROVED A blood and saliva test that promises to deliver results about Ebola in 15 minutes is coming to Guinea for trials. The project uses a "mobile suitcase laboratory" that is solar-powered and can be used at room temperature (usually, dedicated laboratories process tests because certain components need to be kept at very low temperatures). Patients in Conakry, Guinea, will be given the new, faster test alongside the proven method so that results may be compared. The project is funded by the Wellcome Trust medical charity and Britain's Department for International Development. Just check your inbox every Tuesday and Friday, and we'll be here. 9 Fascinating True-Crime Books For 'Serial' Fans It may be the season of Thanksgiving, but a dark Thursday dawned upon fans of the wildly popular podcast "Serial" this week: There was no new installment of Sarah Koenig's engrossing true-crime investigation. A long weekend home with your annoying kid brother and that well-meaning aunt who keeps asking you when you're going to meet someone nice probably sounds even more dull without an hour puzzling over the case of Adnan Syed and the tragic murder of Hae Min Lee. It happened that one day he was hungry and tired, and wanted to make a simple dish that wouldn't require much cleaning. A trained ceramicist, he thought to use an art piece he had made, as a combination pan-plate. The irony is that the object was a pan, heat resistant even, but in the tradition of the Duchampian readymade, created for a life of beautiful idleness. (Read more here) Taqwacore: Punk Piety For Young Muslim Rebels First there was a rock-singer imam, then electro-dabkeh (Levantine folk dance) and Mipsters (Muslim hipsters). Now, it's time to take a look at Islamic (or Muslim) punk. Invented in 2002 by an American author, the term "Taqwacore" has since been taken up by the media and the music scene as well as Muslim youth. A fusion of the words "hardcore" and "taqwa" (which loosely translates to "piety" in Arabic), the term was used to describe a kind of rejection of traditionalist interpretations of Islam on the part of young people (religious or not) who wanted to live their choices freely. (Read more here) Why Marina Abramovic Is Not Your 'F*cking Guru' Marina Abramovic's latest work is not a piece of performance art centered around her physical body, as has been her signature style since the early 1970s. This time, Abramovic has given us an installation of complete nothingness. When visitors arrive at "Generator," after locking up their belongings (all electronics included), they are then blindfolded by one of Abramovic's assistants, given noise canceling headphones, guided into the installation space -- a white room with nothing but padded pillars -- and simply let free. The rest is for them to decide, or as Abramovic said, "This is your own experience. It's up to you." (Read more here) Books Hunter S. Thompson Thinks You Should Read Over at Electric Literature, Arvind Dilawar brings us the eight books Hunter S. Thompson wanted us to read: "No fear or loathing here. These are the books that the good doctor personally suggested to his friends and family." (Read more here) Meanwhile In America, Brown Girls Are Still Dreaming Buzzfeed's Ashley C. Ford writes of National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson: "This past summer, a copy of a book called Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson showed up on my desk. It was a memoir written in poems, about a young black girl raised in South Carolina and New York City. I read it immediately. Each page was as enthralling as the last. It was the book I'd waited a lifetime for, the book I never worked up the nerve to write."
